Fiero Drive With Me | 1985 Fiero 2M4 Revival - Part 3

  • In this episode, the complete braking system is rebuilt so we can get this baby on the road. And then once the baby is on the road, CPS comes and takes it away because of "child endangerment". So now that the baby is out of the picture, we have time to rebuild the Fiero's brakes and get this car on the road.
I wanted to title this Twin Seats, but I don't think that would've been enough since it wouldn't really describe what the episode was about. But at least I could still say it here.

At least you caught the moment on camera. That's what mattered. Cool to experience it, even from here. I had an 85 2m4 back in 94. Drove it for about 2 years and really enjoyed it. I have had many neat cars, but I think about it more than most. It was surprisingly interesting and enjoyable, while being very normal at the same time. Something you mentioned in pt. 1.

First vehicle I had too ever work on was my old 98 Ford f150 4.6 Triton extended cab long bed larait.. needless too say at 150k I've done everything imagineable. Early on it wasn't a daily in fact I wouldn't have trusted it a bit.. as time went on and I kept learning fixing stuff with my dad it became a daily and I drive it too this day in college. I went ahead and bought a new project (94 Nissan 300zx twin turbo) just a few months ago cause I feel like I'm up for it even at 28.. I'd rather not buy a new vehicle heck these run great and if taken care of, it will treat you right. The zx is def a pain in some areas though.. got two cylinders not firing and I've narrowed it down too iniectors (never done those before but ready too do those this spring)

My first “good” car, in 1988, was an ‘84 Fiero, same red with tan interior as this one. Mine was bought from the local Pontiac dealer’s used car lot, complete with a dealer rebuilt iron duke. It was not due to an engine fire, but because the Jiffy-Lube tech failed to retighten the oil drain plug for the previous owner. I was told it went about 20 miles before the engine locked up. Jiffy got to foot the bill for the rebuild. The owner’s daughter never really trusted it after that and, if memory serves, they traded it for a new Grand Am. I was, at 17 years old, thrilled to have something so fashionable and sporty. My father was thrilled for me to have something so slow (mine was an automatic) and that could carry only one of my bad influences (friends) at a time! Back then, yeah ... girls loved it (sadly more than it’s owner). The car was rock solid dependable, braked well, handled well (except it would fishtail like crazy in the rain), and was slower than all get-out! We would turn off the a/c to pass other cars (we referred to it as turning on the turbo). The lack of power steering gives you a great feel for the road and connection to the car (even if it is a pill to park, you get use to it). Seeing this car brings back alot of memories; but I got to say, seeing it in that condition does make me feel old! Hard to believe that was 30 years ago!
I couldn’t tell if your car has the “moon roof”? If so, you can removed it and there is a storage spot for the glass under the hood, behind the spare tire ... in case you were unaware. We removed it every chance we could. Looking back on it, I am shocked we never dropped the glass and shattered it ... but we didn’t!
Keep up the amazing work ... and, when your finished, please do what I wish I had done ... hold onto it! Good job and I am glad to know that someone your age loves a car that was so popular when I was young! They were always special cars to those who really knew them!

+Dale Viers The Fiat X1/9 is such a fun car. More than the Fiero's cousin, it was the Father, the true pioneer. So much so in fact that both Toyota and GM bought one and disassembled it in order to make the MR2 and Fiero respectively. X1/9 is a great car and super easy to maintain now with all new technology like modern wiring harnesses and electric systems. Nothing sounds like an Italian car.

The car needed some love to get it roadworthy again, and I learned a lot about them in the process, having never even touched one before that. It still remains one of the greatest, most fun cars I've ever owned. Enjoy!

Way to go taking on this project... Trivia - the Fiero was never intended to be a "sports car". It was intended to be a commuter car. Magazines bashed it as an under performer, even though it was never intended to "perform" anything except provide transportation. Eventually Pontiac had to live up to the expectations so they built the performance versions. Sadly it was too late though. Now had they done that earlier...

    • @TWX1138
      @TWX1138 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That's because when you make it look like a sports car, and when you make it seat only two people, and you as a parent company sell it through your division that's marketed as a performance brand, it's automatically going to be assumed to be a sports car.

I always liked these cars and as you mentioned the 88 year model with the V6. It’s a shame that GM stopped the car just as they refined the design but that’s how it goes sometimes. Now, I would like to have a car from the 80’s but for me it’s going to be a 1987 RX-7 GL. No turbo, just a standard car surviving with no modifications which I can work on with my son. I remember sitting in one of these RX-7s brand new at the Mazda dealer and thought it would be fun to have one.

When you popped the car into reverse, the smile on your girlfriends face was great! Total surprise! The subsequent series of near missed high fives was adorable! Also, careful with that shovel. It's short handle is gonna lead you to bending down WAY too much for those important burying sessions. You're gonna get back issues! Investing into a longer handled shovel will allow those random forest "getaways" to last long into the future!

Haha, nothing short of excellent entertainment! Having worked at Parkway Pontiac during the early Fiero years, I know exactly what your going through, and I know what's to come. :-)
If you have a little money to burn, this is an enjoyable way to learn.
One tip I'll give you, when you have to replace the head gasket, you can sit at back of the car, with your legs in the trunk area, much easier than trying to over reach over the trunk while standing.
When the engine block cracks, well, that's another story all together .....
Hope you are having fun, can't wait for the next installment, brings back a lot of memories.
Oh, one other thing, early Fiero's like this, handle much better with a little extra weight in the front, we used to use a couple of small bags of play sand up front when auto crossing.
    Enjoy the ride.
Edit: some of the fires were caused by cracked blocks, or lifter covers leaking oil onto the catalytic convertor, make sure your leak free, Ride safe!

For anyone dealing with seized calipers, the easiest trick is to use a grease gun with a nozzle adapter to attach to the brake line port. You just pump it up and use hydraulics to break the piston free. This prevents the majority of catastrophic damage from occurring. Just make sure you tie a towel around the caliper before you start pumping as the piston can be launched quite far.

I had to jump on my phone and post this because I laughed out loud as I recognized the look of pure joy as you sprinted back to grab the camera before you took that test drive. Nice work!

@Mod nifecent I also laughed with a very loud HA! HA! HA! My daughter (a 17 yr old) asked what's going on? I explained to her about bleeding brakes and then showed her the clip.... she then stared at me with the look of distain. I still think it's funny. Maybe you have to be a motorhead to get the joke.

Had a black '87 - Stick shift, 40ish mpg, 92hp, and I LOVED it. Took me across the country and back. Eventually the rear caliper stuck and melted the brake line which then ignited the fluid with it on fire on the side of the interstate. Got it fixed and it lasted a few more years until I got my Saturn... Thanks for making these vids.

I've watched a ton of restoration projects, from pro to "yo".
Your vids shine above them, Ron.
Your narrative is informative, honest, and clear. No glamour, no ego, just a couple of brothers doing the research, using experience, still making mistakes but pushing on.
(Oh - and being a Brit, I love LOVE your deadpan humour!)
Subbed and looking forward to the next episode.
    Keep Calm and Carry On!
    PS - I really liked the instant clean-up at 15:30 ;)

I just bought an '84 Indy Fiero to restore and your video is helping me with the fan issues. Some idiot cut the E-brake lines when they put on non Fiero rear calipers. Found new ones on Ebay cheap and they will be rebuilt before the new cables go on. I wish we had youtube and the internet when I was a kid. Thanks again.
