The piper nearest with his back to the camera is me. I'm next to Ross walker who is adjusting his reed. Neil Cranston is the snare nearest the camera to the right of - I was pretty close with Neil and was his piper when he played solo. Magic stuff

Thanks for posting, Love old Boggies. Early 80's they had the sound. Still true in 2012. Classic man...classic.

Tom Brown's drum scores were amazing and I think he had the best Drum Corps ever !!

It's up there in the mix so many different and very good drum corps. DIFFERENT ERAS. WIDE VARIETY.

Totally classic. It was listening to stuff like this that make me want to be a pipe band drummer in the first place. I live the concentration and the power coming from the corps. First class group for sure.

@tbwff I respect all the comments about progress and 'time moving on', but this is simply the best that corps drumming gets. Drums that required skill to tune and no silly harnesses to hold them - just a simple leather sling.
I was taught for a year or two by Tom Brown (about a million years ago!) and fondly remember his overiding requirement for the drumming to complement the piping and be musical. Today's 'technical difficulty at any cost' corps should take heed.

One last thing: I'd bet a month's salary, that if the Boghall corps of the 80's competed this year - and it was judged PROPERLY (ie: ensemble and 'musicality' before raw speed - they'd clean up. No question.

To be fair, this style of drumming and this corp in particular were the best, however drumming has evolved as has piping and piping sound. I think Toms scores are still great however the style of playing is very mechanical and very much of the 80's. Wee Bobby Rae from Ravara played like this alot and as amazing as he was and his corp's were, this style of playing got left behind and now you have players like Stephen McWhirter and Barry Wilson demonstrating an open, controlled style of playing.

still sounds far better than todays boring scores all the G1 corps sound the same the pipe band game needs individual sounds not generic boredom. I speak as an ex G1 snare drummer.

I disagree with you on the scores and think that Tom Browns scores and arrangements are still up there to this day. The sound of drums has come along way and are pitched very high due to the tension and woven heads. Saying that I have heard some drums today that dont actually sound like drums anymore and sound rather like playing on the kitchen table. Many thanks for your comment and opinion. Best wishes.

showboating??? ok I agree with you on standing upright but you obviously have never really got into your playing, in the zone, the dancing is a result of fine music being played. Some of the best drummers in the world just have to dance with the music, it reaches the soul of the playing

look you dont have too dance while you drum , really ppl hoo dance wile thy drum r big headed and cocky , i know and can say this because i am a leading tip and drum major of 2 pipebands , please dont diss my idol tom brown , for the record boghall & bathgate r alot better and play with andante drums know wich make them sound even better ! just listen to the old school playing man and anjoy it !
