I’ve liked Boghall & Bathgate for many years but since their live Forte concert a few years back they have captivated my attention. I’m so happy that they won the recognition they deserve. Great job, band!

Tune listing? Is the last tune a heavily modified PM George Allen? If so I love that tune back when FFM played it like 10 years ago in their medley

I can't see if the snare drummers are any good (no waving allowed on the right hand, good basket grip on the left, proper addressing of the drum, etc. Most highland snare drummers display poor / unsafe technique) but they certainly sound great--they play as if they're one drum. Now, that takes a lot of practice--so I'm going to assume that their technique is as good as their sound. I love the fact that the tenor and bass drum's stick twirling is absolutely synchronized. Again, I know that takes a lot of practice. I also like the fact that your uniforms are understated--that you don't have to go out and spend a ton of money on a fancy kit in order to do well. This is a model pipe band. Well done. (BTW, I am a recognized master of the rope tensioned field drum. Like most of the masters I know, I'm not known to be one to dole out unearned praise--and this pipe band deserves all the accolades it has won.)

Fifing and drumming here in the States has hit a new low. I taught in Western NY and Canada. Unfortunately, I developed severe health problems and had to move to Boston for health care. My students became influential in the Drum Corps International scene (which is a lot bigger than pipe bands and fife and drum corps). The current DCI style is Moeller / Bavarian, courtesy of my students. The Bavarian tradition is definitely safety oriented and avoids repetitive stress injuries. (I have seen way too many pipe band snare drummers 'wave' their right hands--which is the carpul tunnel syndrome move instead of holding their wrists in a neutral position and turning your wrists as if you are turning a door knob. I have seen way too many pipe band drummers tuck their pinkie and 4th finger way too close to their palms, which means that you loose a really useful control surface and the left stick can go too wild). Now, pipe band drummers generally do have really good posture / address the drum properly, which is something I can't say for the fife and drum corps drummers I've seen (except for Colonial Williamsburg--they're still good. Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps is farb city--they disrespect their uniform every time they go out and play.)

@@up2theline Yes, it is. However, staying safe while drumming trumps all. I have had students who were pipe band drummers, even though I'm not. In fact, most of my students were from traditions other than mine, but they found value in coming to me, asking me for what I thought and instruction. They considered me to be a 'walking encyclopedia'--that my observations were definitely helpful. I'm familiar with the differences in technique--something my master, who held your traditions in high regard, made sure we understood.
When I work with someone from a tradition not my own, I first look at the basics, for problems known to cause injuries (mainly repetitive stress injuries). I want to see good stick control with proper grips. Pipe band snare drummers are notorious for having bad basic technique--tea fingering on the right hand, waving, poor basket grip on the left hand which affects stick control. I see this all the time, not just in pipe band snare drummers but in many field drummers as well. I want to see smooth, fluid, efficient and exacting movement--which this pipe band certainly show--because that is important for staying safe. After that, I look at musicality. I have perfect rhythm and know how to rub time as part of interpreting music. This pipe band certainly has that. I look at professionalism. Again, this band takes pride in its appearance, in its drill, that its drill is appropriate for its tradition. This is exactly what I want to see.
I love what I heard and saw from this pipe band. With bands this good, your tradition is alive and well, passionately pursued. I can not say the same thing about my tradition. I had to teach people outside of my tradition in order to preserve it as best as I could. I can say that there are fine fife and drum corps out of Bavaria; their drummers and I are in the same family (Moeller) and they rely on North American manuals of instructions because the oral tradition in Germany had died out.
I really would like to see the lead piper, lead drummers and drum major be filmed giving master classes. I'd bet they're walking encyclopedias.
I'd bet that members of this band could tell you about minor flaws in their performances. I'd bet they see room for improvement. Please keep this a secret.
      Bravo!
