The Humane Society of the United States worked with the Wayne County Sheriff's Department to rescue 49 horses, mules and donkeys from a West Virginia property. The animals were seized by the Cannon County, West Virginia Sheriff's Department due to signs of neglect and poor health. This is one of the largest equine rescues in the state.

My God...not even water!? I am disgusted at the neglect. It makes me cry so much to see these horses and the human neighbors who suffered along with them.
And it took them 3 years!!!!

To see that one poor horse in the barn that was "stir crazy" just broke my heart - a horse is meant to be able to run free, that's what a horse IS, ffs!

there are lots of girls loving horses, who would give their horses all the love of the world, but don't have a horse, and the people who have a horse ( not all but some) hurt them or even neglecte them. they deserve a life with someone who loves them and take care of them. I'ts just not fair devided. So good that you gust rescue them

ItsmeKyra I've been offered pure Thoroughbred foals and colts many times, but I think I would prefer a rescue to help them get out of that horrible life they had been living. You're right, we would do anything to help these horses.

camiletsplay username-camilammathe1 that's okay though! There are plenty of horses who are slaughtered because they can't be ridden. You could give them a nice, comfy, and safe home. :) Always an option!
ItsmeKyra all of these horses deep inside have some potential to be show jumpers, mounted games ponys ect and there just being wasted really makes me mad
Me and my nana rescued our neighbours donkey not long ago, she was being neglected, and the irregular feeding schedule meant the had fat falling off of her neck, her butt and her chin. Her foal died because of the neglect and she would spend the whole day reaching over the fence for some attention. Her hooves were so overgrown they were bending upward and over. She's getting healthier, she's beautiful, her coat is really rough and oily but for now we're focused on her hooves and making sure she's fed, then we'll start bathing her more regularly. Her name is Bethlehem, I love to cuddle her 😊

+hurt animal abusers paws Really well, thanks! She's still a bit shy around people, but she's just gone through her final extreme hoof trimming session, now she'll just have regular ones. I try to brush her as much as possible when I go down there (my nana lives 5 hours away, but I try to go there as often as possible) but it's a bit difficult to groom her, as she was never halter trained and will pace her paddock as you brush her. Not to mention, when I go down I spend most of the time with the old shetland x riding pony, Tambo. If you want to see where they live it's a farmpark! (like a farm hotel) and it's called Aspens Farmpark (victoria) There are a couple pictures of me on there when I was 4 years old, pretty cute! Look it up on google images. Wow this was a long comment.

I have horses myself, and I must say they are the most kind hearted and loving animals. They are so beautiful and lovely.

There is already a law called animal protecting law. But to bring those horses out there are a lot of troubles. Because horses belong to the vile owner

The USDA has a LOT of abuse cases to attend to with abused animals so its really not easy for something like this to happen. This is why we need more programs like these out there. But seriously I agree, I think that people should have to have a permit to own any kind of animal.

It has to be an awful feeling to watch something so horrific like this and not being able to do anything about it. Sure, you can donate money to the ASPCA which is great and you can report people that abuse animals, but like they said, it's been years and only finally were they able to bring up charges and remove the animals. How sad though, just think about all the animals we eat, can you imagine what their living conditions are like knowing they're just meant to live to be killed? Only support and eat locally raised and grown food and animals who were cared for humanely during their lives!
HSUS works to strengthen laws nationally and HSI works outside the US. That is one of the problems. They don't have the laws in place to do much.
These poor animals deserve to be loved. I am truly discussed with these people for treating them that way. I'm one of those people who get emotional over bad animal cases so I'm glad they have no need to suffer anymore
The one that was pacing around in the wooden stall looked completely and utterly traumatized. They all did. I wanted to hug all of those poor babies, I was tearing up so much. I’m so happy that they’re all ok now and in good hands of good people.

Horses are an extremely difficult animal to trailer, and the fact that they so eagerly went into those trailers broke my heart because it just shows how eager and desperate they were to leave...
I lived in Cabell County, a stones throw from Wayne county, when this happened. I remember it vividly.
This breaks my heart but I thank God that you came is and saved them...God bless you all for helping those precious horses
This is horrible. I have a horse that is overweight, and my other one was taken from a farm that didn’t feed him. He hadn’t had his teeth floated in 4 years, his hooves were disgusting, and he hadn’t been ridden for a LONG time. I’m so happy they got rescued.

I've watched many of these videos without shedding a tear but for some reason when the vet said that horse was only 400 something pounds..... it struck me. No animal deserves this treatment, but especially not horses. they are so gentle and forgiving. they really just want to be loved.

SEVERAL neighbors called, it took years for the rescuers to go there and take the animals, probably burocracy prevented them from be there any sooner.

What took so frickin long for them to be rescued?? Like calling for years wasn't enough? Very sad indeed. Animals need a voice- but they also need a listener!!!
How do people LIVE with themselves? I just don't get it... I've never understood how - WHAT goes through their minds that they think this is ok? Thank you, HS, for all the work you all do. God bless you guys! Crying for these gorgeous animals.. I'd have been sneaking food and water to them if I lived nearby. Simply could not watch this horrible abuse and neglect!
I am very fortunate to have rescued a horse. He was headed to slaughter, if you want a horse and can afford one, please consider a rescue. All kinds of horses from all kinds of life , even a horse that has been a family pet can end up in this horrible situation. I can't ride but he is therapy to me. He has my ❤ forever.
Animal cruelty laws in most counties need to be changed, animals must stop being regarded as property...there is a soul behind every single animal on this planet that we all share together. And we are the only species on this planet who do this to another species. Thank you The Humane Society of the United States, no words are appropriate enough to say thank you for all that you do !

They must pay special taxes for covering the recovery of the animals. And later, receive a severe punishment, that inclune the starving of the former owners

That won’t do, unfortunately, it will just make them hungry. A human can survive for 3 weeks without food.
This is so fantastic, but I wish we could have seen an update, especialy on the one who was so sick. I hope he made it.
I'm also in the struggle to being able to fulfill one of my childhood dreams. I got lucky to have gained some lands, and I really wanted to offer my space, love patience and time to animals in need. The problem is always the same. Not even close to be possible.
I made an appeal so I could gather staff with the knowledge in every area of the health, build facilities, food and all kind of supplies. As I am mentally sick to feel frustrated I even made a PayPal account to ask for donations, but I understand people don't really care to help, or don't believe too.
At the moment I only sheltered one senior horse, who actually is in need which makes me cry a lot especially because is alone. No other horse in many kilometers.
So, I ll keep trying.
Bless people like u that do what I would love to do with my life.

If I saw that I’d have a fit and make such a ruckus they’d not be able to wait to shut me up! I’d be going straight up to the local television stations news and investigators and never sleep till they rescued them... years they said!!! They finally got help but after years... I’d be out of my mind and will be honest that I’d be feeding them horses from the adjoining property and filming it all and sending it to all equine vets, rescues, advocates, 4h groups, usda, spca, humane society and local tv and radio.... I’m sorry it took so long but if this was in front of me I’d have been a bloody thorn in everybody’s side!!! Thank god they’re finally safe and cared for.... 😭🐾💕🤗🐾🙏🏻😇

This just sickens me. My mom's horse Kalli we figured out was the victim of a hoarding case. She was extremely skinny, and she was about to be the only horse they had to put down. But now, she's happier and healthier than ever. We have to say thanks to the person who saw potential in her.

I was crying right along with that lady. People do these things to animals because they have no heart, they think it gives somekind of perverse pleasure to have power over creatures that are defenseless. Personally I think something is terribly wrong with their gray matter. To derive pleasure out of the suffering of something that is defenseless, well it just plain sick. There are too many of these sick puppies running around out there, it scares me. I'am so grateful to God that so many people willing to step forward and say enough is enough. I have been an rights advocate for most of my life. I'am proud of all the rescue organizations that the rights of animals. I'am also proud to say the USA now leads the world in animal cruelty laws. I think we would be remiss if we didn't give credit to neighbors, friends and tips given to authorities. Many people call me odd or strange because I spend so much time caring for a animals, well I tell them they are odd in not caring enough. God made stewards over his creations. Seems to me much of mankind has fallen incredibly short of this task. Thank-you all organizations and volunteers for all you do. It does not go unnoticed. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! This kind of thing just absolutely breaks my heart!! WE domesticated them WE need to care for them!!! This entire time I was crying, could barely write this cause I couldn’t see past my tears!! The owner needs to be jailed but FIRST needs to be treated the way the horses were treated!!! I don’t like anyone being treated awful but when it comes to children & animals I have NO mercy due to there pure innocents!! Be aware, never give up & be safe everyone!! I have 1 BIG question WHY did it take 30 yrs to get these animals away from this POS person?!?! Why did it take @ least a YEAR to a couple of yrs to help these animals?!?! WHY, WHY & again WHY?!?!
