Another insightful and enjoyable conversation, brought on by an absolutely epic piece of music.
Musically, this song is one of the most genius and pure examples of a 5/4 rhythm I've ever heard. It was a breakthrough for me in understanding the power of odd time signatures in musical composition.
Complement time. (Just bear it, haha)
Alena. Insightful and intelligent as always. There is so much to take in with these songs, on first listen it can be too much. You seem to absorb them effortlessly. (As opposed to myself, who simply gawked at the stereo for 30 minutes after my first listen.)
You never know. There is a legitimate chance Maynard read that book at some point in his life. And as art so often plays out, one artist's work is another's inspiration.
Brad. More generally, I'm impressed with your role as a guide through this Tool journey.
    (Insert small philosophical rant)
Borrowing themes from this song, when we care about something deeply, we bind our identity to it - it becomes a cornerstone, if you will.
And, of course, we wish to share those important things with the ones we love, which suddenly raises the stakes.
If they reject the thing, we almost feel as if they are rejecting us. So even the slightest hint of rejection has us on edge.
You are providing a stellar example of how to share something with someone the right way. Its not an easy thing at all to do, so true props for that.
And to you both. Thanks for taking us on the journey with you. Any form of honest expression is a courageous thing to do, and you two are admirably genuine.
    Peace.

      Foti you're too kind! :)
I had wondered where you'd disappeared to, so glad to hear from you again. I was curious if you'd written anything new and was happy to find "No Quarter," - A Musical Love Story. Really enjoyed it, so thank you! I've left you a comment there :)
Stay safe and looking forward to the next time you decide to "procrastiwrite" :P

@@BradAlenaMetalReactions Haha, thanks for that, glad you enjoyed that read.
Yeah, main project I'm working on is a novel, and I've tried to keep the head down to finish that - your videos have become something of a break from writing for me, to take my mind away from the work for a bit.
Hey, question for both of you. Slipknot aside (cos I know them well enough, though I haven't delved into their catalogue to greatly), what other bands would you recommend I jump into from your list of reactions?

Haha well glad to help :) Good luck with the novel! Writing a book is a dream of Alena's actually :)
Ooh okay... our personal favourites so far have been "Ne Obliviscaris" and "Wintersun" (we've only done one song from each of those so far).
Btw, I don't know if you've used Discord before but we've started a server on there where we're pretty active with a small group of new friends we've made doing this channel. It's a great place where we can interact and chat with everyone a little more real time. We chat music and everything else random haha. I know you're keeping your head down to write but if you ever want a break, would be awesome if you came and chatted with us! :) discord.gg/tqDZhsF

Another great reaction, guys! Which should be the next song off Lateralus? Track #2. Then, do track #3, then #4... are you seeing a pattern? Seriously, this album is so amazing and every single track is fantastic, so I'm very much in favor of doing them all in order. I hope the next Tool reaction comes sooner rather than later! Cheers!

I'm not a Tool fan, but I've heard they like their albums to be experienced as one piece. It would be best if you went in order. Also, remember that some tracks work as a build up for the next one, you should not split those up. =P

This was worth the wait! 👍
Since Alena commented on the art: If anyone doesn't know him, check out Alex Grey, the visual artist who TOOL began collaborating with on this album. His work is amazing on its own - as is TOOL's, of course - but the results of their collaboration are truly incredible. One of the most compatible & complimentary pairings of sound and visuals in rock/metal history, I think.
As for what song to do next... if there is any album that begs to be done in full, and in order, it's 'Lateralus.' So doing "Eon Blue/The Patient" next would make a lot of sense. However, reacting to the full album is a lot of time to invest, and a lot of videos to make. If you are only going to do a few songs from the album, I'd say "The Patient," "Parabol/Parabola," and "Lateralus" are the must-do songs.

Electronic drum pads from Danny Carey. The Pneuma drum cam will give you a better picture of some of the different percussion sounds that you hear in Tool.
Edit: Unless you want to do Lateralus in order (never a bad idea, as it is an interesting introspective journey), Parabol/Parabola is a gem.

15:50 it's synthesizer. But basically there are only three instruments: bass, guitar and drums. Early 2000s of Tool live performance of this song worth to watch big time. Maynard holds this scream for over 20 sec. every time.

Brad & Alena Metal Reactions no worries you have many fans and they have different tastes. It’s kind of you to try to acknowledge everyone’s requests. I can tell that TOOL is that “place” (lack of better word) that you can always go to for reflection...no pun intended. Hope Alena finds that place too for your sake as a TOOL fan and boyfriend

The song is about the path that some choose to take when they are abused or wronged by another. The crown of negativity, the scarlet lettermen (a pun of Maynard's, referring to both the book and a letterman jacket). A person, after being abused or wronged enough times, will make a vow to themselves that it never happens again and, as a result, clutch it like a cornerstone lest the progress they've made from their vow, made in negativity, should disintegrate. The planetary reference comes from a book Maynard read before or while the album was made. The book states that Saturn returns to the point it was at when you were born every 29 years. At this time, with the theory of planetary influence over our actions and things alike in mind, you have the opportunity to review all that has happened to you and all of the personal life lessons you've learned up to that point, and choose which lessons are worth or not worth keeping. As a result you will either be lifted up, progressing to a higher state of consciousness and/or existence, or be dragged down by the stones until you choose to let them go. Awesome reaction, you two! Always a pleasure. I vote you keep going down the tracklist and do them all. Your next one should be Eon Blue Apocalypse+The Patient. Can't wait to see it! 😊 I hope you two are happy, well, and have a wonderful day and/or night until next time. 🙏✌😁

This song too my might be song spawned from his reflection about the grudge he had for his mother.
Read someone's comment that Saturn's orbit is 29 years, closest to 27 years or roughly 10000 days.
The Grudge was towards his mother Maynard introduced in Jimmy and his reflection on the subject. This is only a theory, enjoy.
