It's interesting Alena finds all this funny. Nothing funny here. This most likely the pinnacle of Black Metal, pinnacle of any metal. I'm not saying this as a fan of the band, but objectively. These are not costumes, they don't wear it for the laughs. It's all thematic. The album is about a very complex subject and the lyrics take quite a while to study and understand. Hence why I think that I'm right for saying - this music isn't for everyone. And no, this cannot compare with Nightwish, no matter how good they are, they are not as complex as Dimmu Bogir. Only two bands have been this complex so far and that's Dimmu Borgir and Wintersun, however Dimmu proved their music can be done on stage. Wintersun has yet to prove if they could perform their masterpieces live with all instruments being played by actual people. For this particular song. Here's a slight reveal. She's dressed in black he's dressed in white. This is on purpose (even though throughout their whole album they experimented with white clothes), He says: be the broken or the breaker She says: be the giver or the undertaker She represents broken, he represents breaker He represents giver, she represents undertaker They are criss-crossing each other. The song is about awakening oneself in a higher state of existence, trying to unlock more to yourself than there really is. The album was inspired by Alister Crowley's Thelema - The Book of Law from 1904.

Alena nailed the meaning of the song to answer the question is the songs are written from a Pagans perspective, based on pagan world view and the battle between the Saxons and the Vikings. Very common theme in Norway a lot of Norway, not sure of the actual faith of the people in the band though they could be pagan or athiest though they have never said either way. But plenty of pagans like them and consider them part of pagan culture s they at least don;t offend pagans but Christians often hate DImmu Borgir.

I love listening to the first 15-20 seconds of Meshuggah songs, tops. I'm with Alena.. they're too repetitive and almost monotone. They come up with a heavy riff and you're waiting for it to really take off but it just goes on & on.........

the difference between Tarja and floor is that Floor is telling a story and lives the song so much more and i am not against Tarja but floor brings a very the sad feeling that the song needs

This is one of my top faves of Riverside. One other thing, this song is from an album that tells a whole story. It has a point to it, but to understand the story in all, you have to listen to the album. In fact, it's actually a trilogy of albums... Out of Myself, Second Life Syndrome, and Rapid Eye Movement. I've always felt that it's a relationship with himself. There are some about meeting someone, following them, building a relationship, fighting, breaking up... But about this amazing person he wants to be and doesn't like the old that he was. He is a gamer, so you may be right about that too. A lot of references made to games and the characters and avatars you create and how other players see you, not knowing the real you. I love Riverside.

this song is about a stalker killing the girl he is infatuated with because he can't have her, but in his mind she belongs to him and she just won't see that. it's the ultimate solution to him to make her his. it's pretty obvious with that context especially if you've listened to pt 1

sitting the vocal back in the mix serves many purposes: it makes the music the dominant force (and sound even heavier); it pulls you deeper into the sound in search of meaning; it makes you want to hear it again, and again; it is intriguing. the meaning is as always open to interpretation, but the version i have on a vhs in my loft ends with a title screen that says something like 'suffering should be creative.' the video and lyric suggest that over-stimulation of any kind (note the couch potato baby switching off once the electricity is pulled) is harmful, and that human contact is the way forward for our healing and evolution. the beings together at the end of the clip have more definition, they are literally becoming more human through simple interaction. that's my take. good reaction to a seminal song from one of the greatest bands the world has ever seen. peace.

Makes me incredibly emotional when they sing the "fallen from grace / leaving you behind" knowing it's about the death of his sister and the inability for him to ever convey his feelings to her. The mention of losing his nails is when he actually attempted to dig to her, while having a psychological trip, thinking she was still alive.
