@ When you go down to the bottom end of the game I'm sure there are people who fight just to put food on the table. But your right. I'm amazed that after so many fights he seemed to be in reasonably good condition mentally..
There were some tough middleweights in our era Sugar Ray Leonard, Hagler, and a few more that would have given Ray Robinson a run for his money I would sell these guys short at least in the middle weight and welter weight divisions. Boom Boom Mancini the real tall welter weight that fought Hagler and Leonard I forgot his name etc. The lighter divisions had the best variety of great fighters I think.
@GYPSY KING FURY you speak as if white men solely created the internet, they did not people of all colors did. So.. I will still be using my black internet. Thank you
Such an excellent, honest documentary. This man had flaws, like all humans did/do. In my mind he is to be adored. Consider where he came from. Thanks for this important story. 💘
I love TH-cam ! I would have never seen this doc. I work way to much . Lunch time is the best time . I almost started crying at the end from seeing the start and finish of this man’s life . Life is so short so many great accomplishments yet to only die in the end and never to experience the glory again
This was a great inside look into sugar ray robinson's life and career and without any doubt he was a magnificent fighter with alot of skill and charisma to go along with all of that talent. And for alot of the great fighters it seems like they always end up with financial problems involving the IRS and several other important businesses and Joe Louis was in that same situation smh. But pound for pound in the ring sugar ray robinson is the best and will always be remembered as the best to go pound for pound with any fighter of any era🥊🥊💯 R.I.P. CHAMP🙏🏾💐🕊💯
My dad always told me Sugar Ray was the greatest there ever was. I guess I was about 13 and didn't know much about boxing. After seeing this documentary I agree. But It's so sad to see the toll boxing takes on an athlete, and their families. They were taken advantage of by promoters who were in it just for the money. It touched me when his son leaned over his casket and put two dollars in his pocket and said "here's some money for your pocket dad",the way he use to say to him when he was young.
Now I see why Floyd Mayweather focused on maximizing is money and not taking punishment. Nothing is cool about taking punches. All these great boxer’s stories end the same. Broke financially and broken down bodies.
MrTruboy why wouldn’t he last? Are you telling me Athletes were bigger, faster , stronger in the 1950’s then 2000’s? Have you looked at measurables of athletes at that time period compared to now? Unfortunately boxing doesn’t have measurable athletes test to compare. However You can look at track and field times, NFL combine times, basketball player and athletes height and weights Of the two time periods to give you a sample size of what a world class athlete in pro Sports now compared to then.
MrTruboy True! I totally agree with that. This facts is consistent with my original post. “Heart” and “guts” left a lot of fighters in a bad meant to and physical condition, and often times broke from a financial perspective as well. Heart and guts does not take of your family after a fighter retires. My point is Mayweather clearly was smart enough to not go down the cautionary path of his Predecessors
Depends on who's era they were fighting in. Mayweather wouldn't have gotten some of those decisions if he was fighting in the 50s & 60s. The notion of boxing was aggression and sticking and moving was criticizied as much as Mayweather is criticized for his style of boxing. Of course, if SRR was fighting in today's era, he would have amassed a lot more money & fame. Two factors that also weigh on a boxer's longevity and success. Having boxed for many years, I admire what Mayweather has done for the sport because you shouldn't have to be physically and mentally handicapped from a profession, no matter which profession you choose. These guys aren't soldiers where life and death hang in the balance -- they're boxers and the sweet science evolved out of the ideology of being able to avoid punishment as well as being able to administer it
iwant2usethis Depends on what weight and how old he is. Mayweather was actually a KO artist early in his career (in his 20’s) Mayweather is a true 135/ 140lbs. His non fighting weight was around 151lbs. He would lose like a few pounds for 147 fights and He was literally gaining weight for most of his his fights at 154.
Back then athletes were the most underpaid and overworked! And as soon as they retired they basically were broke. Most died penniless. Which is a tragedy.
Great post, the beating that these men endure is a lot to take in. The spectator only realizes the outcome of who wins in the end. I didn’t know that there was a death involved, the abuse and the financial loss. Amazing story. 🙏🏾
One in a billion talent, countless wins, legendary status and fame, yet it all ended so sadly, no one wins in the game of adultery & cheating, wrecked families and the ensuing heartbreak & sadness

Wow seeing that picture of young Ali with an old and sick Robinson brings chills down my spine. I bet Ali never would of thought he’d end up like that.. I love boxing but seeing this shit eats at me on the inside every time.
Kaniel Outis they fake their illnesses after retiring from boxing so they can go on to act in movies & things like that. Ali did it, sugar ray did it, they all do it. They create fake endings to their great careers so the movies greater latter on. Use your common sense & ask yourself what would you do when retiring from boxing, would you fake illness or death so you could go on to do movies music writing or whatever you so choose to do in hollywood, or would you sit on your arse doing nothing for the rest of your days thinking about how great your career was. The reason for all these greats having sad ending to there careers is because it opens the next chapter in hollywood for them, but first they must finish of the ending to their boxing story so when the movie is finally made in the future it has up & down & yet again a sad ending. Common sense is your gift in life learn to use it & see the bigger picture

Please forgive me for the swearing in the comment but I don't give a F***k what anyone says, Sugar Ray Robinson is the greatest fighter that ever lived.... Period.
I'm really thankful for you having posted this documentary for us all to see it. I know you probably didn't make it, but i probably wouldn't have had the opportunity to see it, or even knew it existed if it weren't for you.
So incredibly fascinating! What a boxer/fighter! Hopefully men will continue to grow and learn to be great outside of the ring while learning what to do inside the ring! Learning to hone your craft and save it all for the ring, while being patient, peaceful and calm during the most challenging times outside of the ring, will earn you the title of Champion.
Its a shame that their is no film of Sugar Ray Robinson in his prime at the peak of his power dispatching his opponents, but the film that we do have is still amazing and that was on the other side of his peak. 175 wins 110 knockouts, simply amazing, Fighters will not even have 110 wins or career fights.
198 professional fights and this was in the same era as Rocky Macciano who only racked up 50 pro fights, SRR is a once in a lifetime fighter and I can say this with the utmost confidence WE WILL NEVER SEE THE LIKES OF HIM AGAIN...never!
Sugar Ray Robinson, was not perfect and his abuse cannot be excused. However, it should be stated that he tried his best. He obviously had problems but also did some good.
A very insightful expose into the life of the greatest fighter who has ever, and, possibly, will ever live. With the tighter regulations on the fighter's health and well being these days (and rightly so), even if it were physically possible, the kind of boxing record Robinson amassed simply wouldn't be feasible in the modern era, cramming so many fights into a calendar year. Duran and Julio Caesar Chevez amassed a very impressive and lengthy pro-record, but even they come nowhere near Robinson in terms of longevity and professional fight wins (and knockouts). The sweetest ever; the perfect fighting machine in terms of technique, balance and power: Sugar Ray Robinson IS Boxing. Forget the boxing manuals; just study Ray Robinson at his best if you want to learn how to box.
I wish Sugar Rays' first wife and son could have gotten alot more respect and attention from their Sugar Ray Robinson I felt for them alot even though he was my favorite fighter of all time

His Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre fight was purely the best match I ever seen. Sugar Ray is probably the second man I look up to behind Bruce Lee. Rest In Peace “Greatest Pound for Pound”.
I'm almost 52 and it completely amazes me how changed things are in America now. There's a lot of good and better opportunity's for ppl that need them, plus medical tech and computer tech obviously has come a long way, BUT, look at how tough, mature, classy and well dressed most ppl used to be. I remember the 90s when it was the end of the era of Bob Hope, George Burns, Fred Astair, etc, (Hollywood's Golden Age), and now we are about at that spot for the era of Clint Eastwood, Warren Beatty, Gene Hackman, Jack Nicholson, Jon Voight etc. Kind of sad that life goes by so quickly!
Ray Robinson was the greatest offensive fighter to ever live and Floyd Mayweather Jr. the best defensive fighter although many may say Pernell Whitiker was the best defensive fighter to ever live. Robinson had a left hook that could knock out anybody, welterweight, heavyweight it didn't matter and if he caught you with it, its all over!
Barry Abbott Greatest offensive fighter, lol you also need to include greatest defensive, greatest combination an could knock you out walking backwards!!!He is the greatest fighter to ever lace them up.Floyd is great on defense but couldn't knock a butterfly out.He would kill Floyd, facts!!
aaron pryor if you trying to compare Floyd to Roberson than you are the casual here lmao, ray would beat Floyd ass, you fanboys think nobody in the history of boxing can't beat Floyd smh, the hell out of here
aaron pryor yet people stunned and cracked him lmao, rocky was 49-0, does that mean he's the best? Roy jones went 49-0 if we take away that dq because Roy clearly beat montell griffin, ray was on a 90 something win streak, etc. you don't even base this on Floyds skill, y'all bring up his recited only, that's how I know most Floyd fans are casuals. I like how you skip past the fact that ray fought three to four times a week but ok lol
Not This Guy Again No he wasn’t, he had a friend that was called ray Robinson and used his name to fight cause he wasn’t old enough and he kept it, then a lady called him sugar which made sugar ray robinson
What a man! So many parallels with Ali, they almost morphed and became one. I chuckled - He had a Doberman? So did Ali! He could dance but not sing, Ali could sing, not dance ( to music, true, Ali had no rhythm outside the ring, he could only dance to the beat of his own drum)! The way he would come back, get his second wind..so Ali-like!
Yes, I'm sure in many cultures it is acceptable to beat a woman, and even though I have tremendous respect and admiration for his skills, his records, I will always think of him as a weak man for what he did to his wife...and the way he treated his children.
He predicted he was gonna kill Jimmy Doyle , and tried to stop the fight? Then he killed him! Dam. Robinson was the truth. That the Greatest of all time GOAT
He won his first 40 fights with 29 KO's and beat HOF's Sammy Anggott, Marty Servo, Fritzie Zivic and Jake LaMotta going 7-0 against them. And he only did that as a 2 years as a professional. Imagine that! Sammy Anggott, who give Pep his first lost, never dared to depend his world lightweight title against a young, inexperience Sugar Ray Robinson yet he depended it against the likes of all time Lightweight greats like Beau Jack, Bob Montgomery and even Ike Williams. And after the LaMotta lost, Robinson gone 89-0-2 with 55 KO's in his next 92 assignments and winning the world welterweight and world middleweight titles and adding more Hall of Famers and legends in his resume. Imagine that! 128-1-2 with 84 KO's! That's astonishing!
Make u wonder who training these cats today. Where is their heart the great ones will fight anyone any time. These cats to day is all talk the fight is in the ring lets get that back.

@ When you go down to the bottom end of the game I'm sure there are people who fight just to put food on the table. But your right. I'm amazed that after so many fights he seemed to be in reasonably good condition mentally..
@@chrismalcomson7640 I was noticing that too, and thought he sure must have protected his head with, from head blows.
I find people's life stories to be truly fascinating. What a character. Great documentary!
Kind of ironic that the greatest boxer in history never liked boxing.
he felt that way after jimmy doyle died when he had a premonition that doyle would

@GYPSY KING FURY you speak as if white men solely created the internet, they did not people of all colors did. So.. I will still be using my black internet. Thank you
I'm sure the death of Jimmy Doyle caused that bittersweet attitude about a sport he was a genius at.
Great documentary. What a legend. The one and only Sugar Ray
RIP "Sugar" Ray Robinson.
His legacy stands forever.
U got that rite!!!!
Amen the greatest
Boxing icon. RIP bro. You will never be forgotten
Bro? more like great grandpa 😂
Lord
Even when they Dis someone, They do it with Class. Reporter goes "Do you reckon it will go 15 rounds Ray?" Ray replies " Well it won't go over that"
That's not a diss, though. 15 was the limit.
Great documentary - learned a few things I never knew before. He is unquestionably the GOAT!
Back then athletes were the most underpaid and overworked! And as soon as they retired they basically were broke. Most died penniless. Which is a tragedy.
3/4 of today's NFL players goes bust within 2 years of retiring
Great post, the beating that these men endure is a lot to take in. The spectator only realizes the outcome of who wins in the end. I didn’t know that there was a death involved, the abuse and the financial loss. Amazing story. 🙏🏾
Robinson had humor too! Will it go 15 rounds with "it won't go over that!" classic come back.
One in a billion talent, countless wins, legendary status and fame, yet it all ended so sadly, no one wins in the game of adultery & cheating, wrecked families and the ensuing heartbreak & sadness
The way he holds jake lamotta up from falling on his face after knocking him out, what a legend
Yeah, if only he showed that much decency to his own family.
Yeah so true but he did not oh well
Jake was never knocked out
@Bruce Wayne still doesnt excuse the domestic abuse tho goofy
@@allumer6346 He didn't say it excuses it. He said that was something that didn't make him perfect. Like you succ dicc and think all women are saintly angels. ...I grew up...after 1964....about 2 blocks from where Ray (and 4 blocks from his mother) in the NW Bronx....just east of Riverdale....West 238th Street...off Corlear Avenue. My older sisters and their friends remember seeing Ray in his Cadillac and some played in local Little League with one of his sons.
Wow seeing that picture of young Ali with an old and sick Robinson brings chills down my spine. I bet Ali never would of thought he’d end up like that.. I love boxing but seeing this shit eats at me on the inside every time.
Julio Rowana true
Robinson and Joe Louis were both mumbling wrecks near the end. Same as Ali ended up, happens to them all...

Safe for his name, I knew nothing about Sugar Ray Robinson until I watched this amazing documentary. Thank you!
Please forgive me for the swearing in the comment but I don't give a F***k what anyone says, Sugar Ray Robinson is the greatest fighter that ever lived.... Period.

@John Goodfellabecause Muhammad Ali want to be like him he did everything he did and is sugar Ray Robinson did it first that it

Best documentary I've seen on sugar Ray Robinson.. well put together good history for that time period... saw talent
The King of boxing 178 fight with a 110 knock out wow the greatest of all time R.I.P King
I'm really thankful for you having posted this documentary for us all to see it. I know you probably didn't make it, but i probably wouldn't have had the opportunity to see it, or even knew it existed if it weren't for you.
He won his first 85 golden Gloves fight! He was the smoothest fastest undefeated in his first 93 pro fights!!
Loved the way the men dressed back then.
I dress like that now
Dude was sharp
I like Ray’s pink Cadillac, too.

You'll never see anything like this man again!
Damn it took Ray 100 or so fights to become an “instant sensation”
Sugar Ray and Ali had those beautiful smiles!! And they were awesome boxers!! But everybody knew that, even if they won't admit it!! Yesssss!!!!
TRUTH
Sinatra, one of the coolest friends to legendary boxers Joe Louis and Robinson than folks will ever comprehend.
TRUTH INDEED AMEN
Sugar Ray Robinson, was not perfect and his abuse cannot be excused. However, it should be stated that he tried his best. He obviously had problems but also did some good.
Damn I didn't know about the abuse, not making excuses but athletes that deal with consistent head trauma have thier inhibitions dropped dramatically
In those days everybody got beat.. it ain't like today
Now there was a boxer.......... nothing more to say. RIP Mr. Robinson
His teeth 🦷 were beautiful !
This is the best channel for story telling about forgotten boxers.
The Mob didn't mess with Ray because Ray had friends who he could go to.
Bumpy Johnson
Negus mbarka fake troll is everywhere

Skull and bones. He was illuminati

One hell of a documentary!!!
The life of a prize fighter can be a gloriously hard one.
A Genius in the ring
I wish Sugar Rays' first wife and son could have gotten alot more respect and attention from their Sugar Ray Robinson I felt for them alot even though he was my favorite fighter of all time
Ray had that perm poppin!!!
Sugar rays wife was a babe
Too bad he beat da hell outta her

she dont look black

Rumour was she hooked up with Joe Louis before Ray.
Greatest boxer that ever stepped in the ring period. Pound for pound wouldn't be around if not for Sugar Ray Robinson. The term defined him and validated his career accomplishments in the ring. He had flair , Swagg , good looks and a style all his own. No one else could ever compare. Truly an icon . R. I . P Champ
What I love about Sugar Ray is he is everything I envision. Humble, Charming, Attractive and a perfect mix of Masculinity and Feminine.
The Wynton Marsalis scores on this doc are phenomenal!
This guy needs a fucking movie
4 all u fight fans the real Sugar Ray...Robinson..his mom Leila was my grandpa's sister...?..the very best fighter..no doubt that ever lived!!!
Who cares? What you want for been his family? I cake? Or a big dildo? SRR was a douch bag
Great to be linked to legacy! Thx for sharing
Amazing Ray-Robinson-Was-Flawless Was FLAWLESS.
No she wasn’t
Ray Robinson was the greatest offensive fighter to ever live and Floyd Mayweather Jr. the
best defensive fighter although many may say Pernell Whitiker was the best defensive fighter to ever live. Robinson had a left hook that could knock out anybody, welterweight,
heavyweight it didn't matter and if he caught you with it, its all over!
Barry Abbott
Greatest offensive fighter, lol you also need to include greatest defensive, greatest combination an could knock you out walking backwards!!!He is the greatest fighter to ever lace them up.Floyd is great on defense but couldn't knock a butterfly out.He would kill Floyd, facts!!
aaron pryor if you trying to compare Floyd to Roberson than you are the casual here lmao, ray would beat Floyd ass, you fanboys think nobody in the history of boxing can't beat Floyd smh, the hell out of here
aaron pryor yeah you're a causal lmao
aaron pryor yet people stunned and cracked him lmao, rocky was 49-0, does that mean he's the best? Roy jones went 49-0 if we take away that dq because Roy clearly beat montell griffin, ray was on a 90 something win streak, etc. you don't even base this on Floyds skill, y'all bring up his recited only, that's how I know most Floyd fans are casuals. I like how you skip past the fact that ray fought three to four times a week but ok lol
aaron pryor you can say Floyd was the best in his era but he's not the goat lmao, man you Floyd fans are crazy
He always called me Henry and my name is not Henry LMAO. If Sugar Ray says Henry is your name then that's your name.
Funnily enough that’s how he was named Ray Robinson in the ring because someone said his name was Ray Robinson so now his name was Ray Robinson
Joseph Camacho lmao
Not This Guy Again No he wasn’t, he had a friend that was called ray Robinson and used his name to fight cause he wasn’t old enough and he kept it, then a lady called him sugar which made sugar ray robinson
he did it as an inside joke seeing how his real name is not ray robinson
Lmao
fabulous documentary.
Couldn't bear to watch it after 50.00 when things went down.
I agree similar but ali didn't have the power of sugar ray
But he's a HW so he could still knock u out
Yes, I'm sure in many cultures it is acceptable to beat a woman, and even though I have tremendous respect and admiration for his skills, his records, I will always think of him as a weak man for what he did to his wife...and the way he treated his children.
Hed still knock u out in 40 seconds
steve vermillion boxers have gone through a lot of trauma he also said he tried his best
My sentiments exactly!
He predicted he was gonna kill Jimmy Doyle , and tried to stop the fight? Then he killed him! Dam. Robinson was the truth. That the Greatest of all time GOAT

Awesome didnt know the history until tonite! 2020
175 wins with 114 by way of knockout 😵
It’s 174 wins and 109 KO’s. Come on man
He won his first 40 fights with 29 KO's and beat HOF's Sammy Anggott, Marty Servo, Fritzie Zivic and Jake LaMotta going 7-0 against them.

He fought. Jake twice in 3 weeks. Unlike fighters 2. Day 2times a year
He was absolutely incredible
Love the black and white pics of New York in the 50s . Fitting backdrop for a legend . Maybe he wasn't the perfect human being / husband / father ? If so ,
Let him who is without sin cast the first stone . !
Always link Ray with Nat King Cole in my mind : two guys who were the greatest
at what they did in difficult times . Did they ever meet ?
Fascinating man! Typical story of a great man with all his flaws.
