True. I think he was a badly underrated fighter. Quarry came of age at a very difficult time in boxing history competing with the likes of Ali and Frazer. People forget that Jerry Quarry defeated both Ron Lyle and Ernie Shavers-two opponents who really shook up Muhammad Ali. Quarry was no bum.

Actually, it wasn't an upset at all. Quarry went into the fight as a 2-1 favorite. In his previous fight, Shavers was on the verge of being stopped by a faded Jimmy Ellis in the 1st round but pulled out the win with a desperation uppercut. Except for his power, Shavers wasn't highly regarded as an all around talent.

The Quarry Brothers were interesting. Mike Quarry couldn't punch but he could survive by using his excellent footwork. Jerry was an excellent counter puncher with power, but he didn't have the legs that Mike had. If Jerry had Mike's footwork, he likely would have been heavyweight champion.

And you're one of the few people who know that. Good for you!
Quarry was incredibly good, and strong & on any given night with that hook (Tommy Morrison had that hook talent too) could defeat anyone at that time. Is it any wonder Sonny Liston who was still fighting at this time -- never signed to fight Jerry Quarry? Not because Sonny couldn't defeat him but because Sonny probably thought this was a fighter who could defeat him.
There were others. Joe Bugner comes to mind -- I think Bugner defeated either Shavers or Ron Lyle and that too was a surprise. I wasn't surprised. Strength alone doesn't win fights -- ask Shannon Briggs.

This wasn't a huge upset, in fact Quarry was a slight betting favourite. Quarry was a top-five ranked contender, while Shavers was unbeaten in three years and had won 33 straight fights but his opposition was largely second rate. Note Shavers' freakish reach - 80" for a guy of just 6'. Like Sonny Liston, who was 6'1" with an 84" reach, that extra leverage was undoubtedly a factor in both men's devastating punching power.

This should not have been considered a big upset, Quarry was simply underestimated. Shavers was not a great boxer skill wise but he had superb punching power, although he was not the hardest puncher in history, LoL. Foreman could hit harder than Shavers for sure, and Shaver's could not hit harder than Tyson overall, but his straight right hand punch apparently was a bit stronger. Ali and Holmes said Shavers hit them hardest because they were hit full leverage on the jaw by Shaver's right hand, which in that case was a devastating punch, but neither of them were knocked out by it. Ali was also slower and washed up at that point, as opposed to when he fought Foreman where he skillfully avoided being hit full leverage to the head.

    • @johnshell2480

Foreman and Tyson stated Earnie Shavers hit harder than them. Punching power is just one aspect of the games as Quarry showed here.

Yea sorry brah, Tyson is my guy, but Shavers has been stated by all in his time as the hardest hitter, including by Foreman. And Tyson knew it as well. Tyson could hit hard, but his knocks out came from flurries of combos coming in at angles due to his speed and footwork. Shavers was just straight hitting dudes cold.
