George Foreman is really one of the toughest fighters I've ever seen. His size and strength. His ability to absorb punishment is astonishing! At 41 when he fought Evander Holyfield George went a full 12 rounds and took some brutal hits but barely acknowledged being hit save but only a few times. Truly one of the toughest and greatest fighters of all time.

That Foreman uppercut right after the 3:22 mark almost took Joe's head off. Frazier had heart and guts off the charts here, but he took a horrific beating.
That knock down, in particular, was scary to watch. It looked like Joe’s head disconnected for its body for a second. I dunno how he got up from that one. That’s the kind of determination Mr Frazier had.
Yes, 3:16 & 3:23. Foreman had to go for uppercuts, although his low right swing could fell a tree!, because of Frazier's constant bobbing up & down style, making him very difficult to hit. Foreman missed so many times, but when he finally connected................BOOM! Game over.
Frazier never fully recovered from the 1st knock out. As the commentator says @ 4:18, "that almost looked like a glancing blow", it didn't take Foreman much to knock Frazier down again. (Not that a "glancing blow" from Foreman would do anyone any good!).

Norton was suspect with big punchers, eg Big George, Cooney and Shavers all stopping him quickly. Ali made him look better than he was in their trilogy, because he kept backing off him and allowing him to build up momentum...

@@wmden1 Tentative definately..Norton was a perfectly ripped boxer, strong with great stamina he could go the distance, he was Frazier's sparring partner; but I reckon he felt Foreman's immense physical strength early on in clinches and knew he was in there with a force of nature, he seems to crumble mentally unlike Frazier who kept trying...Norton is at his peak too, but I think he simply said to himself I got no chance with this animal...I'm not saying he quit ,he was hit bloody hard, but he looks like a dead man walking, he knew what was coming and couldn't do anything about it ..only three HW's instill dread in top fighters like that..Foreman,Liston&Tyson.
It's amazing seeing George destroy these 2 legends and ragdoll them as if they were nothing, then to see George completely humbled before Ali. It was something of legends. Something George never saw coming, and you can see why. But, you can also see how George was the yester-years Tyson, even if he didn't train and fight like Tyson. George was an absolute beast in the ring.
@@tramp2827 Tyson holds a professional boxing record of 50 wins, 6 losses, and 2 no contests. He has been a world champion multiple times, with 44 Knockouts and a 75.86% KO ratio under his name. You can't tell me, Tyson also didn't have raw power of strength like George did.

You need to get a look on one of those old training vids of George destroying his punching bags with his fist. George is probably the heaviest hitter of all time. I saw this man hit Joe, in Jamaica, no windup or leverage, and Joe was bouncing around the ring out on his feet.
Ali was clinical in the ring, he never stopped thinking. The same hands that mercilessly dropped Frazier 5 times, could not find the butterfly, they couldn't crush the bee. The Bee brought down the monster and hard hitting Foreman crushing to the ground like an oak tree. Muhammad came out of that ring stronger and a legend of all time. He was the only one who believed in himself and saw the victory in his favour, while everyone, even his own team was scared for his life. Ali, the Greatest Boxer ever!
It was cheesy how Ali never showed the slightest interest in giving Foreman a rematch from 1975-1977. Very cheesy. Spinks, Frazier and Norton all gave Ali rematches after beating them, Spinks and Norton immediately. But Ali just couldn't find the time or inclination to fight Foreman a second time, after outsmarting him the first.
Not only that the way big George use his size and strength to move Frazer around to keep him off balance..In those there was no short fighter that could come forward and beat him..And that includes Mike Tyson and Rocky

But he was not the best boxer. Larry Holmes would have out boxed George Foreman. Jimmy Young did out box George, and almost KO'd him.

People talk about his jab, which was one of the best ever, but his inside uppercuts were vicious! If Norton had continued any longer than he did, he might’ve been killed. He was done!
George had about a 6” reach advantage, he’s as strong as an ox, and he was punching down. If Joe tried to come inside, George would just push him back out to the end of his reach where he could strike without really being hit. If you’ve ever seen what George can do to a heavy bag, then you have some appreciation for what it takes to get hit that hard and keep fighting.
It was the great Archie Moore who told Foreman to push Frazier back.Archie was a co-trainer of the young Foreman.But other boxers like Buster Mathis who weighed as much as 300 pounds and weighed a lot more than Foreman could not push Frazier away because Frazier was taught by his trainer how to stop that and keep his head low.This was a rusty Frazier who got kayoed by George ,Frazier was rusty out of shape and forgot all the skills that made him a champion.Frazier was standing up too high and not getting head and chin low like he used to do.Because his head was not low like it was when Frazier kayoed Jimmy Ellis and his head and chin was high and exposed Foreman hit him like target practice.

If you don’t believe me, just look at the Daniels and Stander fights. Daniels was smaller and lighter than Joe and still he was able to land some very hard shots to joes face. The Stander fight really showed how poorly conditioned Frazier was in that fight. If Stander was a better boxer and more conditioned he might have beaten Frazier. The Frazier that beat Foster, Ellis and Ali was a gym rat, a guy who put his heart and soul into boxing. The Frazier you saw against Foreman spent more time with his band (The Knockouts) than he did at the gym. Leading up to that fight his own camp was leaking out information that Joe only trained 3 weeks for this fight. But I agree the best Joe Frazier ever would not have beaten George Foreman, maybe a 7 or 8 round fight at best.

Foreman keeps his head and chin high that is why it was easy for Ali and Ron Lyle and Dwight to hit Foreman all night long.Dwight was too small but he showed that if you keep your chin and head low you can do damage to Big George.Frazier was not doing that but he could do that because he did it against Buster Mathis who was bigger in weight than Big George.Frazier not only had a great left hook but he was a terrific bodypuncher but he threw no bodypunches against Foreman .Because he did not have ring skills anymore because his mind was on partying not to stay sharp and practice in the gym.Boxing is like Basketball if you do not practice on a regular basis your skills and jumpshot is going to get rusty and disappear.
Watching young George and old George.. especially against Frazier, he was fast..his speed on his left hook was so underrated..his footwork was better than stated. He showed that snap against Rodriguez, and slightly less against Holyfield...but he was 43, not 23 and still did well. That left darn near put Rodriguez thru the ropes..and he was a top 5 and South American champ. George was something else.
He had no defensive skills though, check out his fight against Ron Lyle. He figured he didn't need one when he was younger, he knew that if he was able to connect the opponent would fall

I remember hearing the story from Frazier’s trainer that after the 2nd or 3rd knockdown he started yelling at Frazier’s corner to throw in the towel because he would kill him. That was the most scary of a fighter that ever existed that night in Jamaica.

Yep. This is why I don't get the Tyson comparisons. His peek a boo technique was far more effective than ducking straight down practically in a bowing position
I agree 100% . Foreman was the first fighter to pick up on this. Fraizer was predictable. He ducks every he felt a punch was coming. All other fighters would swing over that duck. But George realized that, that was a perfect target for an upper cut.

Ali's wit and humor was incredible. But he also was ahead of his time and predicted what would happen. As for George, he was a complete monster and his power was out of this world scary.

Ali lost to Leon Spinks - and Ali got his rematch. But no rematch for Foreman from Ali. Ali knew there was too much of a chance that he'd get hurt. No more element of surprise in tactics. And if you think Ali didn't take punishment in that fight you're wrong. Foreman hit so hard that even his punches which didn't land flush were damaging. Even Angelo Dundee said he was worried that Ali was taking too much punishment before he finally dropped the rope-a-dope and turned on the offense.
@IvanLendl87 foreman didn't fight for a year after his loss to Ali. He was mentally and emotionally fractured by that fight. the rematch was already scheduled with Ali when foreman lost a decision to Jimmy Young and retired from boxing for 10 years. It is probably good that that rematch didn't happen, though. 35 year old Ali was not nearly the physical specimen that 32 year old Ali was.
Norton had a lot of power as well (didn’t he break Ali’s jaw in one of their fights?) - but he had a penchant for over-training. Still, he looks like a BB gun going up against a bazooka!
Just raw power. Thats why it annoys me when people say Tyson hit harder when he relied more on explosiveness, still hit very hard of course but not Foreman could generate such great power with very little momentum which is what separates them
Ali's defeat of Foreman transformed the sport. He moved heavyweight boxing from a slugfest to an art form. Ali's brain mattered more than his brawn, and it left Foreman, for a while, a broken man,. But as we see so often in sports, a defeated champion can come back the better for being beaten. Certainly as a man, Foreman was changed, and all for the better. My feeling for Smokin Joe is, wrong place, wrong time. That's another thing you see all the time in sports.

After the first round, Ali said that Norton was fighting much better against Foreman than Frazier had, because Norton was a great fighter. "Any man who goes 24 rounds with me has gotta be great. Ain't no George Foreman who is still a good amateur gonna destroy Kenny Norton, because I couldn't do it." Then Foreman comes out and destroys Kenny Norton in the second round. A normal person seeing Foreman annihilate Norton might reconsider his opinion of Foreman's ability. He might even be intimidated about fighting him in Zaire. Instead, Ali was eager to fight Foreman, and said he woud retire him. "I'll whoop him." That's the attitude of a champion. Hope that helps.
Joe Frazier would have kept on fighting if they let him. He was the type of fighter that could be on the floor with a compound fracture, saying, "Come on back if you want some more!" These guys were incredible!

If he prepared as he did for the fight in 1971 he would have put up a better performance.

As good a fighter as Frazier was, he was not a problem for George, it was a true mismatch and Frazier couldn't get inside because of the natural size, hand speed and style differences between the two men. Forman simply pounded his opponent into submission with accuracy, power and leverage, with each punch causing some damage, especially those body blows, making Frazier open to virtually coma-producing shots to his chin and neck... Forman could literally assassinate a man with his bare hands at that age if he caught the guy flush in the early rounds... I still hold Frazier in high esteem for not ducking the Foreman fight, it really showed what a true pro he was, as improbable it was to win against such a formidable titan as Forman was in that era...🥊💥🥴💫🤔💯

Frazier never really recovered fully from the pounding he endured in the fight with Forman. He never should have taken that fight so early in his career. It left him with lasting residual health issues...

Foreman is like a tank, no matter who he boxed with, he always attacked the opponent, always went forward, no matter what. That's how he won the sympathy of hundreds of millions. He was the biggest giant in boxing. And as a person he is very likable. Bravo, Maestro. Your old fan from Uzbekistan. Big George did not only hit hard but new how to use his size and strength to move a fighter around the ring to keep him off balance.The way he did Frazer..There is no short fighter that stood a chance.And that includes Mike Tyson or Rocky..
He was a lump of a man with amazing strength.. Ali knew he had to do something different to beat him. Lyle gave him problem because he was a lump too and just as strong and fearless.. Lyle could clinch him and wrestle with Foreman.. Foreman wasn't use to that.
Can we acknowledge that George frequently had his hands down? His defense was to push his opponent out of reach, deflect punches with his hands, and be able to absorb some leaping hooks. Frazier and Norton both snuck in some stiff lefts early on but George ate them and kept coming. Very impressive, but Ali saw the pattern and devised the most appropriate counter-pattern. Tremendous competitors all around.
Glad to hear someone proclaim this… I was competitive for 10 years and you can believe me when I say there’s never likely been a man on the planet that hit as hard as George Foreman… Ring strength as well. He would’ve decimated Ali if they hadn’t rigged the ropes, and was not given a rematch of Course
I still don't think Ali beat Foreman. Foreman beat himself. Why? First, it's a fact that Ali's people had arena people in Zaire loosen the ropes so he could do the rope-a-dope (something he never did earlier in his career or after). Second, when a fighter stays against the ropes as Ali did the ref is supposed to break the action. Instructing the fighter to go to the center of the ring & resume boxing. No fighter is allowed to stay, leaning back on the ropes doing nothing, not answering punches for that long period. Maybe the ref was paid off. It was Zaire. Third, George should've had better boxing sense. Not punching away as he did to punch himself out. But no one instructed him. Because Foreman was the Champion, the challenger (Ali) was supposed to take the fight to the champion. The champion does not have to take the fight to the challenger. All George needed to do was step back away from Ali & signal with both gloves to come to the center of the ring. And wait for him. Then Ali would have been in a predicament -- since that meant fighting George toe to toe. Fourth, Ali never gave George Foreman a rematch. Because he knew George wouldn't fall for the same trickery twice. And in the U.S. I doubt they would loosen the ropes for any reason. That's just my assessment. It's something to consider. Several boxers agreed with me through the decades. Many can't account for the questions from this fight. But since George seems to be alright with it -- so are we. He rose above it all anyway later in his career.
One of my favorite fighters of all time: George Foreman. No fighter could beat him by coming straight at him and trading punches. Frazier, Norton, Ron Lyle. No one could out punch him. He also became a very good man later on. Becoming a pastor, and all around good person. Muhammad Ali beat him because he out smarted him, without trading punches. Even George stated he underestimated Ali. Ali fought with his head as much as his fists. Even though George inflicted a lot of punishment on him. Muhammad Ali could take punishment better than anyone.
George Foreman as strong as he ever was. Here in his prime....like a very fit agricultural worker scything hay. Legs spread to widen his power base, loving the physicality of the encounter. Totally immense...and yet...his greatest asset was also his greatest weakness. His reliance on his physical strength was his ultimate downfall. A foe that uses your own strengths against you is a very clever foe indeed. And so enters Mohammed Ali....
One of the things Angelo Dundee said about Ali, was that he was much stronger physically than people realized. He wasn't that much smaller, and didn't get pushed around on the inside. He also punished Foreman with Left jabs and right hands and came at him early in the fight.
@@Tanmag11 Well, he was right. You know Ali NEVER did weight training? Just jogging, calisthenics, working the bag, and sparring. His core muscles were what let him move guys around the ring like he did; Harry Cooper after their second fight said the biggest difference was that he couldn't mess with Ali in the clinch. Not to sound like Mr. Yoga, what with "core muscles", but you know what I mean. Ali was stronger than people who think "strength = arms" thought.
When Ali saw Norton tossed aside by Foreman, I know his heart was racing. Ali, for whatever reason, was rooting for Norton in this fight, even predicted Norton would win, and was yelling instructions to him from ring side, as announcer stated.

Boy when George had him in the corner hammering away and Joe runs away and when he glanced back to see where George is at, George nails him with a right punch to the head and Joe immediately goes down, that shit had me in tears I was laughing so hard.
I remember watching a documentary about this heavyweight era. Foreman said he was scared to death going into this fight and he made sure to hild the stare down with Frazier because he was afraid that if Frazier looked down, he'd see Foreman's legs shaking.

None of the jokers; Fury or other British heavyweights or for that matter American heavyweights today could have stood up to the greats (Foreman, Frazier, Norton and of course, Ali) of the 70's. Frazier had more guts than sense...he paid for his great heart for the fight game. All four of these great 70's era heavyweights could fight and were always in great shape...not a bunch of big slobs like what passes for a heavyweight now and don't have the boxing skills of the heavyweights of the 70's.

That was a monstrous battering that Frazier took. Another 2 minutes he would have been knocked out of the ring altogether. This is where one realizes the skill & greatness of Ali. He took an equal battering from Foreman but never once fell down. And he outclassed & brought down George with his class. Greats are endowed differently. I wonder what would have happened to Frazier if he had fought Shavers, Lyle and Norton? By avoiding them he avoided body decimation. Norton was one o Frazier's sparring partners and wanted no part of a real fight, as for Shavers and Lyle they would both have to win early especially Shavers and with his style and physical dimensions nothing was easy in the ring he was often shorter, lighter and had less reach than his opponent.
Basically my key point is that Frazier could not take big hitters and survive like Ali did. He was lucky he didn't get to fight real monster boxers other than Foreman.

I remember that. Ali backed up all the jive talk. Me nor anyone back then thought he could do it. What he did to Joe Frazier who had given Ali tough fights one win. Then Ken Norton who broke Alis Jaw. But he did it. I remember waking up to the news.
George Foreman is really one of the toughest fighters I've ever seen. His size and strength. His ability to absorb punishment is astonishing! At 41 when he fought Evander Holyfield George went a full 12 rounds and took some brutal hits but barely acknowledged being hit save but only a few times. Truly one of the toughest and greatest fighters of all time.

It's amazing seeing George destroy these 2 legends and ragdoll them as if they were nothing, then to see George completely humbled before Ali. It was something of legends. Something George never saw coming, and you can see why. But, you can also see how George was the yester-years Tyson, even if he didn't train and fight like Tyson. George was an absolute beast in the ring.
Tyson's weapon to put you down, was speed, leverage and timing. Foreman just stood there and clobber you. You felt it a year after. Awesome power.

It was cheesy how Ali never showed the slightest interest in giving Foreman a rematch from 1975-1977. Very cheesy. Spinks, Frazier and Norton all gave Ali rematches after beating them, Spinks and Norton immediately. But Ali just couldn't find the time or inclination to fight Foreman a second time, after outsmarting him the first.

George had about a 6” reach advantage, he’s as strong as an ox, and he was punching down. If Joe tried to come inside, George would just push him back out to the end of his reach where he could strike without really being hit. If you’ve ever seen what George can do to a heavy bag, then you have some appreciation for what it takes to get hit that hard and keep fighting.
It was the great Archie Moore who told Foreman to push Frazier back.Archie was a co-trainer of the young Foreman.But other boxers like Buster Mathis who weighed as much as 300 pounds and weighed a lot more than Foreman could not push Frazier away because Frazier was taught by his trainer how to stop that and keep his head low.This was a rusty Frazier who got kayoed by George ,Frazier was rusty out of shape and forgot all the skills that made him a champion.Frazier was standing up too high and not getting head and chin low like he used to do.Because his head was not low like it was when Frazier kayoed Jimmy Ellis and his head and chin was high and exposed Foreman hit him like target practice.

The Stander fight really showed how poorly conditioned Frazier was in that fight. If Stander was a better boxer and more conditioned he might have beaten Frazier. The Frazier that beat Foster, Ellis and Ali was a gym rat, a guy who put his heart and soul into boxing. The Frazier you saw against Foreman spent more time with his band (The Knockouts) than he did at the gym. Leading up to that fight his own camp was leaking out information that Joe only trained 3 weeks for this fight. Watching young George and old George.. especially against Frazier, he was fast..his speed on his left hook was so underrated..his footwork was better than stated. He showed that snap against Rodriguez, and slightly less against Holyfield...but he was 43, not 23 and still did well. That left darn near put Rodriguez thru the ropes..and he was a top 5 and South American champ. George was something else.
He had no defensive skills though, check out his fight against Ron Lyle. He figured he didn't need one when he was younger, he knew that if he was able to connect the opponent would fall
And Holyfield was juiced to the gills. George was a once-young fighter, not on anabolics, doing a hell of a job in his 40s. One of the best ever.

I remember hearing the story from Frazier’s trainer that after the 2nd or 3rd knockdown he started yelling at Frazier’s corner to throw in the towel because he would kill him. That was the most scary of a fighter that ever existed that night in Jamaica.

I agree 100% . Foreman was the first fighter to pick up on this. Fraizer was predictable. He ducks every he felt a punch was coming. All other fighters would swing over that duck. But George realized that, that was a perfect target for an upper cut.

@IvanLendl87 foreman didn't fight for a year after his loss to Ali. He was mentally and emotionally fractured by that fight. the rematch was already scheduled with Ali when foreman lost a decision to Jimmy Young and retired from boxing for 10 years.
It is probably good that that rematch didn't happen, though. 35 year old Ali was not nearly the physical specimen that 32 year old Ali was.

Ali's defeat of Foreman transformed the sport. He moved heavyweight boxing from a slugfest to an art form. Ali's brain mattered more than his brawn, and it left Foreman, for a while, a broken man,. But as we see so often in sports, a defeated champion can come back the better for being beaten. Certainly as a man, Foreman was changed, and all for the better. My feeling for Smokin Joe is, wrong place, wrong time. That's another thing you see all the time in sports.

After the first round, Ali said that Norton was fighting much better against Foreman than Frazier had, because Norton was a great fighter. "Any man who goes 24 rounds with me has gotta be great. Ain't no George Foreman who is still a good amateur gonna destroy Kenny Norton, because I couldn't do it." Then Foreman comes out and destroys Kenny Norton in the second round.
A normal person seeing Foreman annihilate Norton might reconsider his opinion of Foreman's ability. He might even be intimidated about fighting him in Zaire. Instead, Ali was eager to fight Foreman, and said he woud retire him. "I'll whoop him." That's the attitude of a champion.

As good a fighter as Frazier was, he was not a problem for George, it was a true mismatch and Frazier couldn't get inside because of the natural size, hand speed and style differences between the two men.
Forman simply pounded his opponent into submission with accuracy, power and leverage, with each punch causing some damage, especially those body blows, making Frazier open to virtually coma-producing shots to his chin and neck...
Forman could literally assassinate a man with his bare hands at that age if he caught the guy flush in the early rounds...

Can we acknowledge that George frequently had his hands down? His defense was to push his opponent out of reach, deflect punches with his hands, and be able to absorb some leaping hooks. Frazier and Norton both snuck in some stiff lefts early on but George ate them and kept coming. Very impressive, but Ali saw the pattern and devised the most appropriate counter-pattern. Tremendous competitors all around.
That second knock down with the uppercut in the corner looked similar to when Mike Tyson put away Joe Frazier's son Marvis.

I still don't think Ali beat Foreman. Foreman beat himself. Why?
First, it's a fact that Ali's people had arena people in Zaire loosen the ropes so he could do the rope-a-dope (something he never did earlier in his career or after).
Second, when a fighter stays against the ropes as Ali did the ref is supposed to break the action. Instructing the fighter to go to the center of the ring & resume boxing. No fighter is allowed to stay, leaning back on the ropes doing nothing, not answering punches for that long period. Maybe the ref was paid off. It was Zaire.
Third, George should've had better boxing sense. Not punching away as he did to punch himself out. But no one instructed him.
Because Foreman was the Champion, the challenger (Ali) was supposed to take the fight to the champion. The champion does not have to take the fight to the challenger. All George needed to do was step back away from Ali & signal with both gloves to come to the center of the ring. And wait for him. Then Ali would have been in a predicament -- since that meant fighting George toe to toe.
Fourth, Ali never gave George Foreman a rematch. Because he knew George wouldn't fall for the same trickery twice. And in the U.S. I doubt they would loosen the ropes for any reason.
That's just my assessment. It's something to consider. Several boxers agreed with me through the decades. Many can't account for the questions from this fight.
But since George seems to be alright with it -- so are we. He rose above it all anyway later in his career.

He also became a very good man later on. Becoming a pastor, and all around good person. Muhammad Ali beat him because he out smarted him, without trading punches. Even George stated he underestimated Ali. Ali fought with his head as much as his fists. Even though George inflicted a lot of punishment on him. Muhammad Ali could take punishment better than anyone.

A foe that uses your own strengths against you is a very clever foe indeed. And so enters Mohammed Ali....

One of the things Angelo Dundee said about Ali, was that he was much stronger physically than people realized. He wasn't that much smaller, and didn't get pushed around on the inside. He also punished Foreman with Left jabs and right hands and came at him early in the fight.

Norton was one o Frazier's sparring partners and wanted no part of a real fight, as for Shavers and Lyle they would both have to win early especially Shavers and with his style and physical dimensions nothing was easy in the ring he was often shorter, lighter and had less reach than his opponent.
Basically my key point is that Frazier could not take big hitters and survive like Ali did. He was lucky he didn't get to fight real monster boxers other than Foreman.

Ropes were too big in Zaire. Look it up. Ali could lean back and avoid the uppercut and let the heat tire out Foreman. There was a reason Ali never allowed a rematch in an indoor regulation ring.
