- In this video I change out my spark plugs on my Porsche 911 991.1. This covers all non -turbo 911’s from 2012 to 2016. You might be able to apply this to newer and older model 911’s. This wasn’t bad doing it myself with the correct tools. It will save you thousands on the 40,000-mile service.

Great video but a tip from many years as a pro. DO NOT USE AIR TOOLS TO START THREADS. Always hand start any screw, bolt or spark plug. If you cross thread using an air tool, it can be pricey to sort out.

Very true, must always start spark plugs by hand first, even with those long extensions, you would feel whether the plug is threading correctly or not.

I’d NEVER START the spark plug with a air tool or ratchet. If you cross thread that it’s huge money. Start it by using your fingers and once you’re confident its started and threaded correctly THEN use your tools
EXACTLY! And also note at 0:51, that torque wrench was "stored" at nearly full torque as the handle was turned up almost all the way.
Perfect angles! Much appreciated, other videos I have seen do not get the correct angles as you have shown. Also, agree with the comment re: start threading with hand.

It changed my mind on possibly buying a 991.
I have a 997.2 4S. I was turned off by how Porsche made it almost impossible to work on 911s starting w/the 991 since they reduced dramatically the amount of access to the engine w/a super tiny engine cover.

Compare to doing Toyota spark plug replacement, this looks like a nightmare! Such a waste of time and money.

looks scary when you putting in the plugs using the air tool... maybe hand tight for few turns then air tool will be safer
Yes, the airtool I'm using is only 20 lbs torque. This isnt strong enough to ruin the threads.

EXACTLY NEVER START A spark plug on a 911 with a tool! Ever. It’s tens of thousands to repair that

Excellent video. Without a lift, those long extensions are a necessity. Can’t believe the dealership wants a thousand bucks for a spark plug change. Insane.
The Air Tool feels like it doesn't have much torque because you aren't using IMPACT SOCKETS.
Use Impact Sockets, and you will see a big difference as Impact Sockets are designed to transfer the full impact of the Air Wrench.

You are making things harder on yourself by using those long extensions. Use only as long as you need to keep the extension flex to a minimum. NEVER EVER start spark plugs with power tools….you will hate yourself if you cross thread them….

I have a question not related to this video and you might have some answers.
I have Carter’s s convertible and I noticed that I have leak in the convertible hydraulic reservoir I just can’t locate the leak. It’s not around the reservoir at all but I’ve seen oil trace behind the rear passenger tire. Any idea how to locate this? Appreciate your time
I would not use the airtool to start the spark plug. If it crossthreads, you have no idea, and bye bye to your aluminum heads.
Never never never use a neumatic tool in the spark plug never that’s is so stupid do by hands

@@how2togo that doesn't seem to agree with the thought by some folks. I know it was highly recommended on motorcycle engines at one time.
Been a mechanic for 35 years have not experienced the need for anti seize on a spark plug thread. Maybe on a motorcycle where there’s more exposure to water, but not on a car.
yes, I saw something official that said do not use anti seize.

Why are you changing the plugs @ 40,000 miles? They are good for 100,000 miles at least.

Nice Video BUT..........ALWAYS begin threading spark plugs with your fingers, holding the extension and socket. The video should be edited or titles warning the uninformed of the proper procedure. A stripped spark plug hole will require an engine out head removal and repair costing thousands. NEVER USE AIR TOOLS TO START SPARK PLUGS.
Yes I agree but my air tool has very little torque and I did start it by hand. Maybe that didn't show in the video.
Any plans on making a tutorial to replace the nav screen unit with something more modern (i.e. wireless carplay models)?

When I take the wheel off, I always throw it under the car. Cheap protection in case it falls from the jackstands.
Any thoughts on using anti-seize on sparkplug threads?
The internet has different opinions about it. I'm just not sure.
I'm a retired A&P mechanic and we always use graphite anti-seize on spark plug threads. And hand tighten it first 2-3 turns to avoid possible cross threading.
Similar but unrelated. My BMW manual says to add light coat of copper antisense to spark plugs and tighten to 18ft lbs. i.e., read or obtain a copy of the factory manual.

You need to watch the entire video. I use a device to reset.
