:Exploring Abandoned Anything can be dangerous or Deadly without experience. I don't encourage anyone to enter any Abandoned structure. Not only is safety a concern, but often times its illegal and when possible, i seek out permission from the owner or local police. The pipe from the dam to the powerhouse is called a penstock. If the structure is an open-top box for the transmission of water, it is called a sluice. Turbines can be designed to operate under different heads of water. The flow needs to be consistent for the head.
In Michigan and other places where low-head power stations were built in the early days, those plants fell out of favor because of maintenance costs of the machinery. The basic machinery costs are not much different depending on power output, so a larger power station to provide the equivalent of 10 small stations would not cost 10 times the cost of one but only about maybe 2 to 3 times the cost of one small one but only one set of operators instead of 10 sets of operators(there are the big savings). It would be similar to a saw-mill making electricity for the mill, but after work hours the electricity would be sent to the homes and businesses around the mill to keep a steady load on the generating equipment.

So you know for later. The tubes to the turbine plant from the control structure are called Penstocks. The Power you talk about through the penstocks downstream is called Head. so a 12ft drop in elevation is 12ft of head. The wood in the control structure slots are called stop logs. Water control and old hydro is fascinating. Thanks for the look at cool history!

You probably shouldn't have went in there Post 10. At any time the dam could have broke free and washed you away in a second, either at the entrance with the wood or the hole you went down in. Even if you thought you had a quick exit that was no guarantee. I know you have training and somebody might have been with you but I personally think it wasn't safe to go in this time. We want you to stay safe so we can keep watching Post 10 videos but don't take risks for the sake of making a video. I still enjoyed it but stay safe. 👍

In the first video, when he went and explored this place for the first time, you can see similar graffiti at nearly every level of the dam. Up at the top behind the gate, down in the lower water area where the other entrance is, and at least 1 or 2 in the main dam tunnel itself. I kinda figured someone came through and had put their tag up at every milestone (like climbing down a ladder or finding a way in, etc) but I didn't know who it was or that they were (im guessing) a youtuber.

4:38 The way that water sounds is the way the wind sounded the night that I found my dog abandoned on top of a mountain in frigid temperatures in February.
NOAA weather said that at that time it was 40 mi sustained winds and gusts up to 60 some miles an hour the temperatures were 20° f not sure what the windshield would be. But when the wind would rip around the mountains and the woods it would scream and howl along with that rumbling sound.

I am not sure if I can visualize just how this particular one was set up, but this looks like a common turn of the century small hydroelectric dam. My mom worked at an old hospital in Maine that had one nearly identical that only powered the hospital. I seen one in the in Midwest still intact in Niles Michigan. I don’t know what it powered. But at the time, they often built many small ones that just posted a few lamps in a handful of buildings.

if the pipe gets narrower as it goes down the hill will generate a lot of pressure, more then enough to turn one turbine.

As guitarcheolgy says, this set up isn't meant to power a large town, maybe a single factory or small village.

Yeah, kinda looks like they have the same year date at the end, whatever this is memorializing only lived like a week or two, maybe a year tops if that say 2020 and 2021
