    I'm into heavy rock and punk music but this song takes me back to a different Britain when there was my mum and dad and my brother living in harmony together. Those days are past and sadly can never return. RIP mum and dad.xx

    Steeleye Span was always a paradox. Fiddles & Fenders, drum kits & dulcimers, yet always capturing the authentic spirit. Maddy epitomized it-- plain and comfortable as an old shoe, yet irresistible.
    What a talent to entertain.

    So much junk is argued on these postings it really is incredible. Half of it irrelevent in the first place. Maddy is quite simply the best, a real english lady with a good pair of lungs to boot. Still going strong today she will live forever.

    RIP Ed Stewart. Crackerjack was a favourite five to five Friday treat. I was 7 in 1976. My kids find my fondness for this song and TH-cam clip hilarious but I am happy to have spent my childhood in simpler, gentler times. Ed's sad passing is yet another thing that makes the distance between now and then a little wider.

      Agreed! I was 8 in 76 and loved Crackerjack too. I used to listen to Ed Stewart on Radio 2 when my dad gave me a lift home from grammar school a few years later. Dad died suddenly when I was 13 and Ed Stewart reminded me of those times.

    Oh my god, her facial expressions when she sings "He's a false deluded young man" the first time make me die. Maddy was pure beauty.Those little moments when she raises her eyebrows are totally in keeping with the sentiment of the song, as are the way she moves her body and her hands. The whole thing is utterly delightful.

    this song , for me , will always immortalize my Uncle Laurie who had too much to drink at my Auntie,s family get-together one xmas, ... .....being a heavy drinker AND registered blind was NOT a good combination for him, ...but great entertainment for us kids , who watched in awe as Uncle Laurie staggered to the armchair next to the tropical fish tank, while it was plugged in and buzzing weirdly,. ........he rolled his left sleeve up as this song came on the radio in the lounge, and proceeded to stick his entire arm in the electric fish tank whilst stirring it like crazy in mad frantic circles, and singing this song at the top of his voice ,... we watched in horrified amazement as dead fish after blue shiny , dead fish floated to the surface,...while my big battle-axe Auntie screamed like a banshee at him for killing her fish!... most of them died from shock, ...( and a few from the fumes!).... ,,it took 3 strong men and my Auntie hitting him over the head with her shoe to get him out of it,..the house was in uproar as every available man dragged him away from it while he protested loudly that he wasn,t doing anything at all , that he hadn,t touched the fish and his arm was perfectly dry!! ....about 11 of us kids stood in the doorway laughing in hysterics , as, when they pulled him away and he went back for his 3rd attempt , 5 guys now wrestled him to the ground in one fell swoop ,as the fish tank tipped over with all the tussling going on, and soaked the carpet , the padded armchair and everyone else with it! ...my Auntie never forgave him for ruining her xmas, and i never forgot how funny it was to be 12 years old!!!

    • @neilcole9698
      @neilcole9698 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +DucksDeLucks I think it's pretty obvious what she means - if this was played to kids today they'd probably shout 'rubbish' and throw things because it's hardly Justin Bieber or One Direction, is it? But then, kids in the 70s wouldn't have been happy if Bing Crosby had appeared - every generation has always had its own tastes.

    • @FMHammyJ
      @FMHammyJ 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Neil Cole Im a kid of the seventies, and yes, I wouldn't have been happy if Bing appeared.....it was only later that I would realize why he was appreciated by my mom and dads generation....hopefully with age comes wisdom, and an appreciation for any style of music that is good.....

    • @neilcole9698
      @neilcole9698 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except that age and wisdom are not correlated and taste and what's good are subjective, not objective. I doubt very much that many children today will eventually become fans of Steeleye Span, Bing Crosby or Gilbert and Sullivan for that matter, but that does not reflect on their wisdom or musical judgement.

    The song "All Around my Hat" is of nineteenth century English origin. In an early version, dating from the 1820s, a Cockney costermonger vowed to be true to his fiancee, who had been sentenced to seven years transportation to Australia for theft and to mourn his loss by wearing green willow sprigs in his hatband for "a twelve-month and a day," in a traditional symbol of mourning.

    I remember my older sister going mad upon me, because I did like this song in 1976!! Of course, she liked more all the other songs of Steeleye Span (less commercial and more deeply Scottish Folk Music!!!) But 32 years later, I still very like this one...Thx hollowmoor!

      Lol. Rock n Roll has always been full of characters who've relied on "shock" value, Elvis, with his hip grinding was probably one of the 1st 😉
      4 years ago, I might've agreed with you, but I've seen/heard live performances by Ms Cyrus, including a very creditable version of Jolene.
      However, I *do* remember Steeleye Span, who, along with a number of groups/artists were producing this stuff alongside some of the earliest Punk anthems.
      For me, like a few of the others they were a "guilty pleasure" and it's great to hear this again, so much so, that I dug it out of my iTunes library and stuck in in a Playlist..so, thanks to the O.P! 😉👍
