  • I ran into a lot of issues at this event and barely drove. I had to learn the hard way that my set up is a complete mess. It seems that I have a few things to look into.
    Also, if you noticed that I'm holding the steering wheel and not countering, it's because my front wheel kept getting stuck. Sketchy, I know.

    I know that pain. Had to hammer the wheel well seams in. It was cutting the tires because of size. Looks like the wheel hub was loose or the bearings are going. Hard to tell unless you lift and check, but makes sense. Luck would be the sockets don't fit. Had that problem too but for my bros car who was with me at the time. Couldn't fix his issue no sockets for the lug size though. Well hopefully you can get a group together just to cover more tools or help. Glad you made it out safe. Could have been worse.

      I'm bringing ALL my tools next time. I'm lucky I was able to do as much as I did with the limitations I had.

      @@Driftmaru86 I remember bringing another car just to carry all the tools I wanted on hand. Well Definitely bring the tools you know work on the car. The Torque gun was unlucky new. Maybe put a video together about what tools are needed for the track. Make it a 86 set. I know the 14mm and possibly 17mm are required sockets. Hammer. I recall having a torque wrench but they have single cork sticks now? Couple screw drivers. Jack, jack stands. List goes on, but you should make a kit video on what you need.

    Yesss hell yeah stoked you're getting out on track! Can I give you some pointers? Like car setup ect? I feel like there's some easy info that might be useful 🙂

      @Driftmaru86 oki I'll try my best to explain what I usually do for my cars and my friends to help them have a more enjoyable track day.
      Alright for starters, the oem tension rods need to get pulled forward to get away from the wheel well. Simple measurements will get you a long ways so a tape measure will be your friend for this and to adjust and play with toe measurements.
      I went and measured the outside of the tension rod from LCA to the back of the adjustable nut, that was 14 inches and a little under 1/4 so 14 1/4". That adjustment nut is a 22mm and an open wrench (i got an open wrench kit from Harbor Freight and it was easy to make the needed adjustments) works great for the one facing the bumper, the inside nut youll be fine with a regular wrench or crescent wrench. Also hammer that piece inside flush and paint the wheels area. That'll give you a good idea of what might be rubbing.
      The camber plates at a quick glance looks like it has a bit more adjustment so if you can, loosen the Allen bolts and move those two closest to the engine bay towards the center of the camber plate allowing you to have full camber.... oh that's if you don't have NRCA. If you have NRCA leave it as is but if you don't have them then go full negative on the camber plates.
      I bought toe plates and do my own adjustments, they're nice to have, you mess around with your tie rod and you get comfortable. Good confidence builder to knock things out when you have the right tools to do so. But do 1/8 toe out. Most everyone does it. And here's the important part that'll really help, get a digital tire pressure gauge, it's usually the most consistent and that's what you're looking for almost always. But tire pressures will help the most and with a stock 4ag 16v running 14s, I'd do 25psi in the front cold (before any drifting happens) and 70psi rear. Yes that sounds sketchy but if you ask Taka he'll probably tell you 100psi is ok. I'm guessing you practiced throttle modulation and that's what having high rear psi will help you remember.
      So toe -1/8" out (negative toe)
      Camber -4 or -4.5 (negative camber)
      Caster I'd try +3.5 (positive caster)
      Tire pressure when cold 25psi front, 70psi rear.
      This is for everyone to use. Setup is important to have an enjoyable track day. Feel free if you want to video chat, I'll gladly show you so you have a better understanding if you'd like. Good luck and can't wait to see more progress! 😁🤘🏽

    I've got the same problems with my 86. the front fenders rub like hell on the front wheels. Some fiberglass wider front fenders is what i was thinking as the solution.
    I beams swapped mine and thought it was the weight of the engine causing me to rub.

    • @Driftmaru86
      @Driftmaru86  ปีที่แล้ว

      I was told (that day) that 86's have barely any caster which was what caused the front wheels to rub. I definitely need to get mine adjusted.

    Many an hour spent on many a car park in me old Capri.. then it happens I popped my engine swap cherry, 3.5 Rover V8 up front.. we went from drifting around car parks to drifting around round abouts, down bus lanes and epic power slide down the M25 towards east end, god the memories

    Looks like the front wheel bearing loosened up, tighen it and dont over tighten it (too tight will kill the bearing sooner than later) and its worth it to re pack it with grease just fot safe measure. If it continues to loosen up over time the front hub could be un-true and youll have to replace it (hopefully thats not the case). Also stock 4ag is the most fun shit to drift with, rev limiter all day lol

    Ahhh the feelings. My first knuckle up training event was like this and barely got 2 runs in. It's ok to ask for help and if you're in the Austin area, Thaison, Laine, and Juan are AE86 homies! They're awesome dudes in the Texas AE86 community so they'd be down to help set up the car or if you need parts.

    I run rotas as well, never seen the purpose of buying 'real' wheels. Don't be afraid to use that clutch a lot more too. What tire pressure were you running? First events never go as planned so don't beat yourself up! but hey your out there doing the thing!

    • @redrevoc
      @redrevoc ปีที่แล้ว

      The purpose is what you make it, could be anything from appreciation in value, quality control, weight, ethics of buying fake wheels etc.
      I bought and relipped legit wheels because they're lightweight, the design isn't available anyway as a fake wheel, I could spec it to my liking (3-piece) and there's something inherently cool about a 45 year old wheel being restored and used.

    • @AE86Matt
      @AE86Matt ปีที่แล้ว

      @@redrevoc well yeah I understand other peoples purpose for it. I should have said I’ve never understood. Just a personal opinion that’s all.

    • @Driftmaru86
      @Driftmaru86  ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally think roots are good enough for drifting. Having to buy multiple "real" wheels as drift spares can get expensive. I don't remember what tire pressure I was running. I was so unprepared and scattered. But now I know for next time!

      @@Driftmaru86 yeah plus if you damage a wheel or something it’s only 100 bucks or so to replace it. Pump the rears up to whatever the max is on the tire. Once you start getting use to it you can drop them to get more rear grip but with the low hp it helps.
      Fronts I personally run around 28ish. I also run a stickier tire up. You’ll kill it next event!

    Good to see you put up a new vid. I was about to unsubscribe, thinking your channel was dead. Looks like a lot of changes you had in your life. Keep up the good work on the car. Welcome to the 86 life where anything that could go wrong will go wrong. Looks like the castle nut back out on the hub assembly, you might have to get new bearings and races depending on the damage. You might get lucky and just have to tighten the nut up again and reinstall a new cotter pin. Wish you the best.
