You just can't have mistakes in this caliber of knife, especially nowadays, with 30 dollar knives being virtually flawless.
Try an TwoSun knife in m390 for under $100 and you’ll be floored.
@@andrewchips802 outpost76 has tested Twosuns, and specifically m390 I think. Their heat treating is not good, and therefore whatever steel they're selling doesn't achieve the actual potential of the steel. Even though they're cheap there not worth the money you're paying.
@@bbaker3510 had my ts162 and ts270 tested: 61.8 and 61.3. I like those numbers
@andrewchips802 yeah that's good 👍 they may be hit and miss but for that price, sheiit
@@andrewchips802 That's great sounds like you got two good ones
Seems to be the general consensus. Very sad. I wonder what happened in the factory that caused all the issues. The lack of transparency from Liong Mah is a big part of the issue.
Quality control problems (find and fix defects) at the pilot and production phases. Reate will build concrete life jackets if that is in the specs. The project sponsor (in this case Liong) is responsible for the schedule and product/service quality (and risks, scope, procurement, etc.). It is super, duper difficult to get all the pieces correct, at the right time, for all the right stakeholders.
Poor napkin drawing from liong. The ink bled through and caused issues.
Doom yer the fffing man bro . Active a f lately making good vids and all kinds of good things 👍👍.
@@Hungrybird474 thanks bro 👊
Its called China. CHINA. You wonder what happened? China happened.
You hit the nail on the head. Liong Mah is a knife designer, not a knife maker. You see a lot of knife designers sending designs to China and letting the factories decide how the knife is going to turn out because they don't know any better, like how Mah's food prep knife is on bearings and not washers. There are a lot of people who can design a good looking knife, but completely overlook the fundamentals of what makes a knife a good design outside of looks alone. Liong Mah knives fall in that category for me.
Yep - I think you pretty much nailed it. I personally feel it lies in the relationship between Liong and his OEM. I wonder how hands-on Liong is with the brand & manufacturing or whether he hands off the designs and the OEM takes care of manufacturing & distribution? Regardless, I still like his designs. Have a great day.
@@realbroggo A lot of the designers doing production with Chinese OEM's don't do anything more than supply a 2D drawing of the knife. The OEM's do all the engineering design to make the knife function, on top of the manufacturing. There are stories of some knives being made with nothing more than a hand drawing supplied by the designer.
In a situation like this, I could easily see where features many of us consider crucial could be easily overlooked, as the OEM's are merely trying to supply a product that delivers the looks of the design.
💯 percent
Many get a prototype and just say its good or they ask for changes and instead of making another prototype, just put those changes in to production. Nothing is tested or verified until all the knives are shopped to customers in some cases.
Liong didn't want to go back to Reate and say I can't sell these this way. We need to fix this. He said I need to sell these.
@@tacticalcenter8658 Thats even worse tbh
It took sixteen months because factory workers kept losing fingers to that detent. Condolences to y'all who waited that long for a project knife.
Hahahahha
Liong Mahs knives are the first high dollar production knives Ive sprung for. And I’ve been lucky so far. But,it saddens to see a lemon from him. Ya don’t get many of those in this Biz. Another great example of Mr. Neeve shooting straight even on a maker he admires. Good show.
Usually they are extremely well done
Got a kuf2 iirc and bitched to him about lock bar access, said it would be fixed on the next one. Never was. Dudes a liar and a sales man. Doesn't really care about anyone but money imho.
My little nephew designs some pretty cool looking cars. Similarly, for any of them to come to fruition someone else would have to build them.. He also throws a fit if anyone points out any problems or issues..
Imagine buying a knife and instantly feeling the need to mod it so it doesn’t feel like absolute garbage… cough cough Bugout
🤣. Have a great day.
At least a bugout is made in USA and less than half the price.
The Bugout is awful and I’m ashamed to call it USA made. There’s no excuse for defending it.
@@corymoore2292 lol okay dude. Enjoy your knives!
@@corymoore2292
Exactly. A good product is a good product, period, regardless where it's made.
No maker/designer gets any slack just for being made in a favored nation/brand.
The honesty hits again. Best knife show on the internet.
I think someone who reviews knives they use is better
Remember The fuller fanatic? He ended up taking down his vids about Liong Mah. The fuller fanatic was right about a few things for sure despite people siding against him because Liong is a well know designer in the industry with a lot of clout.
I get that he’s upset but it’s honestly sad how he came out at you. Mistakes were made with the design and he can own up to it and improve. You were harsh but honest. Only counter point is the 16 month wait. It may have just been Reate. Many that deal with them complain about them missing deadlines and being late.
I have been waiting for this video. I just sent mine back to him yesterday. He says he will replace it with one with a strong detent. We will see. Fingers crossed 🤞
Goodluck, I wonder how many others are getting returned, I have a feeling it's most of them
@Neeves Knives I would think a lot. I am not very optimistic that my "replacement" will be much better. I am thinking they are all tuned the same way unfortunately. 🤔 😠 😡 😤
And you may have to wait another year to get it back the same way! 😉
@Brian Colagiovanni I hope not, but you may be right. I just saw him post on IG that he will be sending them back to Reate. I'm sure it will be a long wait, but it better not be the same way, or I'll be pissed 😤
@Neeves Knives I saw a post on IG from him, and people are saying he deleted a prior one, apparently not happy with this video. I never saw it, but I'm very curious what he had to say.
I'd like to see an update after the improvements! I'm curious how to tune a detent
Your in the clear Neeves. I started watching your most recent video and came here after seeing the IG post you had in your video. That is whack. Who ever is running the social media just completely sperged out. Keep up the great work man.
Bummer! I really like the looks of that. But too many missed marks for the price point. Great callouts!
Jerad have you ever considered designing a knife yourself? You know exactly what most of us want. I think it could be really cool
Very right except! It needs a if he makes one at least have a tanto, spear and dep point blade, like Cold Steel offering 3+ different blade styles for the same knife!
I would love to see a neeves knife!
I think the grind was his idea.
Thanks for the honest review and I totally understand your disappointment. I don't have this knife but I have a few in my collection that I saved, chased and paid a lot of money for and when I finally got them was totally disappointed. Such a kick in the nuts when that happens.
Ah, the video that started it all. Best of luck with everything and I love your honesty!
Shoot, Jerad! I was hoping yours would be better than the one I received.
Yeah I can see the detent is not dropping in
My memory is vague but I recall the coin being an old superstition about protecting you from cutting yourself with the knife - but I thought it was meant to be when you gave someone a knife they'd have to give you a coin in return to make this "work"?
With a detent like this you'll need at least 2 coins to protect you. Have a great day.
I got the same version as you Neeves and same issues. Unsafe detent, to the point that I'm scared to put it in my pocket. This was the only preorder I have ever done and it will be the last. Let us know if you find out a way to fix the detent. Very disappointed
Plenty of other pre order knives with really good detents aka sharp by design knives! Don't let one bad transaction ruin it.
@@lovescamaros1 good point, just salty at the moment and need some time for the anger to reside
Totally agree with everything you said, and the lockbar access and clip I knew were both going to be issues. When my lefty gets here I might have you create some lockbar access.
Heard all the buzz surrounding this so I thought I’d watch. You are definitely not in the wrong my man. That’s a long list of blemishes that should have been addressed before you got it for sure. Such a. Bummer 😢.. ✌️✌️
Could you make a video going over how to make a detent stronger?
I have a Kubey that slowly gained a light detent. But I like it because it effortlessly opens the same way it effortlessly shuts close. The lock is still rock solid so I like to think it’s broken in😂
Also the clip on older model is one of my favorite clip.
I have one of the original Field Dutys , with the shred carbon fiber, and it is fantastic in every way. It is up there with my Fif20. Sorry to hear this new version isn't as great. The lock bar access on my Field Duty isnt as bad as the KUF 2 though..and thanks to your mod on it, that KUF 2 lockbar access is how it should have been from the get go. Same thing with the Medford Slim MIDI..Thanks for the review.
YEAH I JUST GOT DONE FIXING THIS ONE WELL FOR THE MOST PART
Yeah my kuf2 access terrible. Complained to liong about it. He lied and said it be fixed on future models. He still to this day doesn't take that into consideration. He's lied quite a few times. I just choose not to get anything from him anymore especially all the drama the last few years with him.
I agree. The coins are pointless. Judging by the long wait, I would imagine that cost a pretty penny. Very disappointing indeed.
Ok, upon further research, they're only like $400 tops. Could still get a quality sword for that kind of cash.
So since Liong Mah is accepting them to be sent back to the factory to be retuned, does this mean that all future versions of this model with have the stronger detent?
That's why I don't like pre orders because you never know what your going to get until you get it. Unless I really know who I'm ordering from. Good video brother 👍
I'd just take it apart and crank that lock bar a little. Should take care of the light detent. I've had that issue on a few knives and that typically works for me.
That was the first thing I did!.. the detent was practically non existent.. I cranked the lockbar over... it made it a weak detent.. instead of no detent... definitely unacceptably weak...
I have an older Field Duty framelock and it's one of my favorite knives. It's perfect. This sucks to hear.
That detent is dangerous. Bummer bro. Cool looking blade.
I'm still waiting on mine, never recieved it after it being sent to wrong address when I sent him my new address twice the last time a week before he was supposed to ship. But i was able to try my buddies and I can't believe how bad the detent is. And being able to see the detent track when the blade is open is just unacceptable and yes the lockbar access is crap.
The detent on mine is not snappy but definitely not as weak as yours. I wish the detent was a little stronger but it’s good enough. As a lefty the lock bar access isn’t as much of a issue. It was definitely the longest wait on a preorder yet
How do you strengthen the detent? I have a couple of knives I’d like to do that to.
Damn. Haven't received mines yet. Such a bummer
Jared, please do a follow up video showing the knife after you modify it and maybe throw in some footage of you actually working on it as well. That would be a cool video. That’s a sweet looking knife. It’s too bad about the detention. I hope you can get it tuned in.
It's already posted I posted it a few days ago
@@NeevesKnives I’ll definitely have to check it out. I watched the video where you reacted to the company’s reaction to you and realized I missed this one. Now I am realizing I missed another one. That was a quick mod.
Yeah, I own a Liong Mah knife. I always liked the designs, and one day pushed the button. The knife is great, BUT I feel that it was way over priced for what it is. So it's unlikely that I will buy another. Just far too many better options out there for the money these days I think.
Would never buy his knife based on the personal attack he gave you over this.
I think this is just not a good design. To have the detent perfect for both deployment methods is gonna be really tough on a mass production scale
Heard similar things from several people now about this blade…really weird to send it out of the factory like that
These are things I would ignore on a 50 dollar knife or worry about fixing on like 150 dollar knives but at 400 I'm sending it back
If I bought a $35 knife that had a garbage week detent like that, do you know what I would do? I would send it back. On a $380 knife this is absolutely ridiculous.
His pompous and childish attack on you is going to backfire on him. It shows his lack of professionalism and reeks of someone who is accustomed to having his ego stroked.... karma will prevail.
In this price point, something as basic and common as a detent should be perfect. Smh.
He snapped on IG at you lol
I was in the market for one of these but not anymore 😉
Man that sucks! It's pretty bad when my $40 Petrified Fish is superior. I'd be super pissed especially after 16 months.
Yeah that’s a huge problem for a brand new knife especially at that price
It’s not the size of the detent ball that determines pressure but how deep the ball seats into the hole. Use a small diamond cone bit on a dremal to make the hole bigger. Do a tiny amount then reassemble and check the pressure. Don’t worry about lock stick, hole size won’t effect it
It's a combination of detent ball diameter, the depth that it's seated into the hole and (this one's huge...) lockbar tension.
The CRKs with the ceramic ball interface are great examples of how all 3 work together to determine the action.
@@CNYKnifeNut After making a heap of knives and fixing hundreds for others it’s 90% ball to hole size interaction, size of the ball does make a difference but it’s negligible.
Adding lock bar tension will help a small amount but it’s also likely to introduce lock stick, lock wear and decreased quality in the action on a lot of knives, that’s the reason knife makers never use lock bar tension to regulate detent pressure when the knife is being made, the lock bars job is to give a safe and repeatable lock up without stick or slip while making the detent work effectively.
The belief using the lock bar tension to fix detent pressure, lock stick and improve the action gets a heap of people in trouble, I don’t mind much because they pay me to fix them 😅, that’s the reason you see a heap of striders with “lock rock”, they never actually had lock rock they had lock stick and people tried to fix it by pumping the lock bars out, rather than carbidizing the lock face
I’m still waiting on a Smock SK-23 I ordered like 7 years ago.
Oh man, nothing worst than waiting for a knife your really looking forward to only to get it and feel let down by it. Sorry brother 👊
100%. On a bad $30 knife you might shed a tear but on a $350+ blade it's more like a waterfall. Have a great day.
Man that sucks 😕 This seems like the detent on my Roxi 3, pretty much nonexistent. As soon as my finger touches the hole (giggity) the blade just flops around. If I just lift up that knife with the blade pointing downward, the blade will fall out. Don't even need to shake it out, it just flops out like a wet noodle. It seems like more and more knife companies slipping up on the QC these last 6months. And especially when you waiting over a year on a pre order for a premium knife, they should take the time to check ALL of them.
Wow dude that’s just straight up horrible. Did you contact me for the Roxy 3 ?
That sucks but it sounds like they just didn't bend the lockbar in enough so it should be easy enough to fix yourself
@@Hungrybird474 No WE told me to send them a video of the issues with the Roxi, but they had no way of receiving the video file. And I wasn't about to send them a 15 second IG video. So I just uploaded it to YT as unlisted/private and sent them the link. But I just gave up on it. I might try to fix it one day, but for now, it just pisses me off every time I see it.
@@Cid_1 sorry Cid1 . I was just looking at mine sideways at how far the ball sticks out and looks like about half way or more . I seen a channel called Yi Huang who addresses this issue but it looks like a pain the ass . I would lose the ball for sure . Wet noodle action always sucks 🤣.
$380 for that? Yikes!
Drama alert! LOL
For real though, I like Liong Mah.
I have a Model 18, and I love it.
But I think this review was fine. Keep it up man.
In my opinion you should never be able to shake open a knife.
@@Notorious2024 bruh I saw that. I was refreshing and poof
@@Notorious2024 Yeah that detent is criminal
i was really sad initially i didnt get in on the preorder on these. looks like i dodged a bullet
Wow yea those are definitely legitimate problems, the detent is definitely a issue & cutting the heal of the blade off!? But I have to say the way he responded was completely uncalled for & very childish. Ive been really close to grabbing one but idk now. Thanks for doing what you do!
Unfortunately this design and execution screams lazy to me. That is the worst way to execute the heel of a knife with a sharpening choil, and detents that soft should be instantly caught in QC. Also the knife might as well not have the top flipper and just be tuned perfectly for the large opening hole. Wonder if that's a symptom of the multideployment craze, where detents can't be tuned optimally for every opening mechanism on a knife
But many multiple deployment knives hit that mark perfectly... it's a balance... but no balance on this one..
Great review, Jerad. Sucks to see this unfortunate series is flaws on such a nice looking and expensive knife. Definitely unacceptable imo
You know what's not disappointing? The Sharp By Design Apex. Thanks again.
The kinds of problems you don't even see on a 60 buck civivi 😅
Civivi may be boring. But you know you are getting a solid knife when you order one.
Oh no; my Field Duty is in transit. I hesitated buying this big knife, but like my L1 and bought the Field Duty on the basis of Liong's reputation. I am paying Aussie dollars, taxes and shipping for a knife that may be crappy. This might be the last Liong Mah product I buy if mine under-performs like yours. I live in Australia and the exchange rate and shipping costs exacerbate the problem and risks. Rats. Double Rats. All the best to Liong who is doing his best to sort this out. 👍
Goodluck, I fixed mine I'm posting the video on how I did it tomorrow
It's sad to see big knife makers cut corners like this, especially with the kind of competition that you see nowadays.
It's also disappointing because the knife design is very beautiful.
Is it confirmed to be a Reate made folder? I probably haven’t handled nearly as many Chinese OEM’ed folders as most people, but all the pictures looked like it was made by QSP to me.
Shoot, it looks nice but, I'm glad you review these things. 👍👍
My full size field duty is a liner lock. If they made a frame lock version of the large field duty I've never seen it.
The ones I've had in were all framelock aside from the edc, you can search for them. I have a video cutting out the lockbar on one
A solid review of issues with a $380 knife you waited 16 months for. The initial IG post from him(which he apparently took down)...was unacceptable.
Didn’t see it what it say?
@Josh it was basically an angry, name-calling IG post. Very unprofessional on his part IMO.
@@ob1856 oh wow that’s horrible. I traded mine for another chaves. I did give him feedback and he was pretty receptive to it but pushed back on the detent mostly saying it’s a front flipper. I wouldn’t ever buy another one of his products though too many other things out there that are great in that price range.
Skiff made blades along with tons of high end knives have the plunge issue. Shirogorov does as well.
Hey what do you think of the quartermaster roper in tanto cpm 154
Thing is if it was me who doesnt own a decent folding knife and i decided to by one and it took 16months to get it. Thats along time to wait for a tool. If your just buying it for the sake of collecting or already have a bunch of knives that does the job i can see the 16 monts aint that big of a deal. Specially as im also unemployed and what not my investment would be looked on that particular pre order.
To me that aint fine.
I said screw it to companies before and have reviewed their buisness and then gotten hate mail responded a couple of times and they were just getting worse and worse each time. Sounding exact like Leyong mah. So i ended the whole thing pretty much explaining that the review could have been edited and or updated but with your unwillingness to stand by your screwups it stands. Contact me all you want im not responding any more of your hateletters im a working man and dont have time for that shit.
Thanks for your honest and great reviews. We need more honest and truthfull men and women on this planet.
I would suggest sending it back. Then we’d get an opportunity to see how they resolved it and how long it took. But given the designers response, I’d be hesitant to believe you would get whatever the typical customer service would be. If the design calls for a light detent, that’s a big fail for me. Personally I don’t like folders that you can easily shake the blade out of.
Yeah that’s so odd. His knives are known for some crazy strong detents. I’ve owned a few.
Long mah is overrated. He thinks he ship dont stink. Keep up the honest and great reviews brother
If you've ever handled an F5.5, you KNOW Reate can to a crispy (and safe) detent on a liner lock. I'm surprised Reate would actually allow such an obviously poor detent to leave their factory. This reflects as much on them as on Mr. Mah. If there was pressure to ship being applied, Reate should have stood up to him to protect their own reputation.
Liong Mah has an answer to fix the detent...send it back to China for another unspecified amount of time 😆😆😆😆...u can't make this shit up lol! The dude can't even tune his own knives!
ALL FAULT...FACTORY! NO FAULT ON MR. LIONG 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The choil thing is Reate all the way. It’s all the time with Reate.
Ouch. That detent actually looks unsafe. Big disappointment for such a long wait.
Very disappointing for sure 🤣 Almost bought one but after this post I'm glad I didn't. No reason why at that price it should have issues..
Both Mah knives I’ve had have had horrible lock bar access Field Duty & Kuff V2 I no longer buy his knives because of just that alone!
plunge grinds are something that will kill a knife for me. Since switching to the KME system I have decided that that is a feature that can be fatal as far as if I decide to buy it.
Id be pissed waiting that long and paying that much for "potential"
Yup
Yup
Crazy that in this day and age a knife takes that long to make while others have them made at the same company and taking less time to do it. Sounds more like a money solvency issue more so. I can understand a few months late but 16 months is crazy. And for the knife to arrive in that condition and at the price point we're talking about seems a bit ridiculous in today's market. Granted some of the issues were known going into it but still. Think many of the issues like you said are from the perspective of a designer and not a user especially when it comes to sharpening, the clip, and lock bar access. For the average person to get these issues fixed would cost alot of money if they don't have the knowledge like you do to fix it themselves. All comes down to how much irritation your willing to deal with, on a $50 knife you expect some rough edges but not in this price bracket. Having a knife in this price bracket fail at so many things is disappointing to say the least. Very well said and a solid honest review is what we always get from you. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.
I’m seeing mixed reviews. Not everyone has issues. But I agree there shouldn’t be any issues for anyone.
So I reached out in a few groups to people who own this knife. They all said the detent is supposed to be lighter but it doesn’t shake out for them. I’m guessing some peoples failed QC maybe idk. Still sucks but I will still buy one for table. Definitely not the 500$ I seen some people ask tho.
I have one and the detent is decent on it. I can’t easily shake mine out. My original field duty has a much better detent for sure. I paid 490 for mine on the preorder, so 500 is close to table on these.
I think it is what you said about fear of people not being able to use the front flipper. Seeing that the asian makers love front flippers, I noticed far often, they have pretty weaker detents (not saying its the weakest) as oppose to other makers.
I UNDERSTAND NOT WANTING TO STRONG OF A DETENT WITH FRONT FLIPPERS BECAUSE THAT CAN BE AN ISSUE ALSO THIS ONES DETENT IS JUST TO SMALL, IM POSTING A VIDEO OF ME FIXING IT
Maybe i did overhear it but did Reate make these? Somehow it looks like a Two Sun to me.
I’ve wanted a LM Knife for a long time. I know some models are good so I’ll stick with those for now. Why is that hole so freaking huge? Also did Reate do these? I’d get a refund if possible. No way I’d take that for $400 you can get so many bangers for that.
Jared just lock at the closed knife with light behind. And that makes it visible if the detent ball hole is to small or not. Check out YX Huang Video about Spyderco Domino. I did the Same and now it's great.
Yeah I have, I've worked on a lot of detents so I'm pretty good at fixing it, and yes it appears the detent is not dropping in
I agree with you 100% Jared... Those flaws you are pointing out are major flaws. Also, Mah coming at you the way he did is totally ridiculous. You are a very well known TH-camr and collector. It seems like he just doesn't seem like he cares very much.
I wonder how long it'll take for liong mah to try sueing over decimation
I think it is true. Mah probably used a light detent so that the front flipper would work better. I have heard of other cases of the same thing. How does a knife designer/maker balance the needs of 2 different opening methods? Some are easy, others - not so much!
They definitely fell way short on this one. You can get amazing knives for $400 these days. I can’t believe it took 16 months. That’s ridiculous.
I had a spyderco sliveraxe with a light detent , opened in my pocket and cut my hand
Love S90V, love tall blades. Pre-orders can be a gamble, man. Digg the ol' COD consept. Good extension on the jimping, prefer it sharper, toothier or grippy in general. Wonder if that guy will "wave" from the pocket.
Appreciate all you do and not being a shill #0; much love!
Is Reate s90v even any good? They do m390 good but not so great with other steels.
S90v heat treat protocol shown by the Crucible's data sheet isnt idea. A higher austenitizing temperature and adequate soak time is necessary with ln2 to get that 61rc range and be compared to Spyderco s90v performance.
Knifesteelnerd's protocol gets S90V to 63, and that wasn't with super high austenizing temperatures.
Not sure how Benchmade and spyderco both does S90V at ~61 but theirs work pretty well so I aint complaining much
@@CKshouta correct, with cryo.
Check out Phil Wilson's article on s90v also at seamount knifeworks. A lot of companies were doing s90v at 56-58rc according to the early datasheets. There are still companies that do this. And what Larrin does in a home forge is going to be different in a Vacuum forge that is used in mass production. Also Spyderco do a plate quench and cryo in these steels while they don't in most other brands.
Also forges in Asia often don't go up to or past 2000 austenitizing temps. This varies as some can absolutely do this. Depends on who they are using for heat treat.
@@CKshouta the other thing that's been discussed about s90v in the past is cryo is needed for the low temperature temper. Due to retained austenite. If not using cryo a high temper was preferred. In the current data sheet, they say 800-1000 will cause embroilment. While 1000-1025 is stress relief and dimensional stability.
😵💫You could live with some of that but the detent kills it totally. I cant understand why companies can't notch out for the lock bar or add some height to the bar. When you combine all the issues including the length of time it really does ruin the whole experience. I'm confident you can resolve those issues but you shouldn't have to and I'm guessing it wasn't cheap either.🤬
Damn thats too bad. Thx for the honest review.
Thanks for the honesty Jerad, something that it's often lost. Love the design even though it has those quirks. Great video 😁👍
Why is a chef even designing folding knives? Fixed blades, sure. But EDC folders?
That liner lock is super thin.
Nah I want one still. It’s such a beauty
