Not just the repair IFV; any unit, except for JumpJet units like Kirov and Night Hawk. Ctrl+Alt+LMB is guard order (or area-guard, not sure), and JumpJets can only guard cells or stationary units for some reason.
You can also order a Repair IFV to guard a stationary vehicle by pressing LMB while CTRL+ALT are held, this is "an impractical but lazy solution" to essentially set up mobile repair facilities since if you give a regular guard order or pick a cell to guard with CTRL+ALT, the Repair IFVs have a tendency to "stray" from the position where the order was initially placed, but if you instead order them to "guard a vehicle" you have parked in your base, then the IFV will return to the vehicle it's supposed to guard after every time it's done reparing everything, and it still tracks for vehicles in the vicinity other than the one being "guarded" so it basically waits for your units to return to heal them up, then returns to his guard-position. You can also set up a Master Repair IFV that is guarded by two additional Repair IFVs in tow, if you move the Master Repair IFV itself, the two Repair IFVs will follow with their guard-oder in-tact and constantly track for nearby injured vehicles to repair, you could also make the Master IFV a Chrono Legionnaire IFV for example, that way you have an IFV battalion that can both intercept enemy fire by freezing the enemy in place so they can't do harm, or possibly even freeze your own unit to make them temporarily impervious to damage. IFVs are probably the most fun vehicle in this game.

In the Alien Invasion Mod, the Gap Generator deployment actually did something, it basically Tripled the AoE of the Shroud created by the Gap Generator. Also, in addition to that, the mod made it so that the Gap Generator will not allow superweapons to be fired within its radius. (Actually made it useful against AI lol)
By the way, TG's notice about crate power-ups seriously helped me at the original RA2 mission "Destroy Yuri and Kremlin". Simple, it was supposed to have a super mode that would require twice the power the gap generator needed and expand the gap radius significantly, this was removed obviously due to balancing reasons and the deploying command was just left with over 9000 power drain so players would avoid deploying it.
G is hotkey for "guard" function. It makes the unit attack any valid targets within certain range. Engi IFVs "attack" allied units by repairing them, miners "attack" ore to harvest it. Another hotkey that's not much used is x which causes a group of units to disperse. Its main function is to reduce effect of splash damage, and if timed correctly it can help avoid a missile from a jet. Also, the spacing helps IFVs stagger their attacks so that not all of them target the same V3/rocketeer/jet/etc.
