CG animation showing an example of the Pepper's Ghost Illusion using video projection. "Restless Spirit" Video Effect available at spectralillusions.com
It doesn't have to be angled at any particular angle. Whatever angle works best for your space and keeps distortion to a minimum is fine. You could have the screen flat on the floor if you want.
The screen can be black, white or grey. Whatever shows up the least in the reflection depending on the surroundings. Black is often best for Pepper's Ghost. The song is Midnight, The Stars and You by Al Bowlly. It was in The Shining.
i like the music could you tell me what peice that is also thank you you helped me understand the ghost effect very nice work indeed my haunt was suffering from lack of more interactive props
This looks awesome! We're making something like this for a school project and we're wondering if the angles you showed in this video actually work. Thanks!
Great video! I'm trying out this effect with a projector as well. Can we use an angled mirror instead of the screen? Also, why does the foil have to be tilted as well? Can't we just tilt the projection in the projector's settings? Thanks for reading!
If you needed to have more space between the projector and the effect, you could bounce the projection into a mirror, but using a mirror instead of a screen wouldn't really help. To cause a reflection in the glass/clear surface, it has to be around a 45 degree angle to the viewer to work. You can have the screen flat on the floor or vertical just as effectively. However works in your space.
blueyes56 The screen at the bottom can be anything, really. Foamcore/poster board, a blank wall, fabric. Whatever works best in your space. The reflective surface can be glass or plexiglass. We've also had great success with a product called Patio Door insulation on a frame. It shrinks to fit and works nearly as well as glass.
+Jesse Lewis Build a frame of pipe or sturdy wood and attach the foil. We often use Patio Door Insulation. When you use a heat gun on it, it pulls tight and most, if not all of the wrinkles are removed.
sweet! so what method do you use to attach the foil to the frame? I think that part is what I'm most confused on - i recently tried gila uv window tinting with not much luck - heat gun lightly the whole thing after attached to tighten?
+Jesse Lewis The kit comes with tape, and that's good for initially sticking it down. After that, we go with 2" Gaffer's Tape to make sure it really sticks. I assume that window tinting shrinks as well. We haven't used it, to be honest. If it shrinks, it'll get out the wrinkles. Be careful with the heat gun and you should get a pretty good plane. There may be a few wrinkles here and there, but they're not too noticeable, usually. Also, Patio Door insulation is really inexpensive and comes in 2 packs. If you mess up, just try again.
That is the screen that the ghost image is projected onto. This can be a mid grey color. The projected image is then reflected into the glass, and that's the effect that you see.
Cool. Thanks for sharing!
There are companies out there charging thousands of dollars for this well known but beautiful effect. A little research goes a long way :)

You can use white Foam Core, styrofoam, fabric, etc. Whatever works best for your situation.
What can I use for the angled screen? I'm not exactly sure as to what I can project onto so that the glass reflects just the image I want.
what is the reason for using angled screen?
What method do you use to suspend the polyester foil for tension? how to you frame it and get it flat?

What is the white on the bottom for?
