2 Simple Ways To Make A Realistic Ghost Illusion For Halloween

  • I explain how with just a handful of items you can make a scary realistic ghost illusion with a phone, tablet, TV or monitor! Go big or go small!
    The first method is a classic called the Peppers Ghost which you will recognize in use at Disneyland's Haunted Mansion.
    The second illusion is the Haunted Frame which is portable and can be hung on a wall or left on your desk!
    Materials For Peppers Ghost:
    1) A video device like a tablet, phone, monitor, or television
    2) A pane of glass
    Materials For Haunted Frame: (Skip to 4:00)
    1) A video device like a tablet, phone, monitor, or television
    2) A frame with a pane of glass. Preferably a shadow box
    3) One Way Privacy Film /Tint
    4) Baby Shampoo, Spray Bottle, Squeegee, Razorblade and Tape.
    The video loop is from atmosfearfx but you can also search TH-cam for ‘Halloween ghost loop’
    Any questions? Leave a comment below it will help everyone!
    In a later tutorial I will go over a full build with a Raspberry pi. I will be making it with a sensor so it will only trigger when someone walks near.

    One thing you need to do before applying the window tinting is, clean both sides of the glass. You don’t want a blurry or dirty mirror.
    And, thank you for sharing this.

    Minor point: that angle isn't 90 degrees. 90 degrees is the angle between a horizontal and vertical line. The angle you were describing looks more like 45 degrees.

      @@antimattergarage8147 maybe the terms are used interchangeably. However if you look up any one way glass at a store you will find it is windows that have this same tint. It makes sense it’s one way since you can only see it one way, not sure the reasoning behind calling it two way mirror when it’s only seen on one side. I did see it called Both when looking it up though.

      @@Coinmancer Since childhood I've known this as a two way mirror. Perhaps it's a matter of perspective. Each person sees the same thing with a two way mirror so the object is seen in two ways. Or, light travels in two ways, reflected on one side and transmitted on the other. Normally there would be a backing on the mirror which would prevent transmission, right. A one way mirror to me is just a mirror. Anyway, I think we may have both spent more time on this than it warrants. LOL. I still like the video and gave it a thumbs up. Keep up the good work.

    I like your idea for the haunted mirror. One thing you should try, is create a fake tombstone that produces ghostly apparitions in the yard. it's a different take on the Pepper's ghost effect. Add and apply white vellum poster board to the back of a tombstone. Take a projector and project an image onto the white vellum paper that's on the back of the tombstone. Get a piece of Plexiglas and aim it toward the image that's on the back of the tombstone. The image that's transferred from the projector to the tombstone is now reflected back onto the Plexiglas. What I did was, I bought a big piece of Plexiglas and put it in between two bushes. during the night time, you cant see the edges of the Plexiglas, so you don't know it's there. Kids would freak out because all of a sudden, the would see a ghost appear and didn't know how it was done. Now you know. It's a new spin on the Pepper's ghost effect.

    • @klacustoms
      @klacustoms 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kupolaf2031 I don't have a tutorial video for that, but, maybe in the near future. I'll make a video of it when I have time, since you asked. Till then, here's a video I did quite a while ago. This effect comprises of using a TV/ Monitor that has three images that are separate from one another 1,2,3. Foreground, Mid and background. When angling down three separate plexi-glass sections in a box down onto the monitor, it creates the Pepper's Ghost effect when bouncing the image off of the monitor to the plexi-glass image for a 3D Pepper's Ghost effect. You could use mid ground for the ghost video while having a flying candle video move from the background to the foreground. Keep in mind, the more sections you splice with the plexi-glass sections, the less height or looking space you'll be able to achieve. You can see this effect being used on Mickey's Runaway Railway. Here's how I did it. My video demonstration just has a stagnate 1, 2 , and 3 image for simple demonstration only.

    You can also put the tablet to the left of the glass or the right. You don't have to lay it flat on the ground to get the same illusion. If you have a flat screen TV and a big sheet of glass you can put the TV to the side and reflected off the glass. Either side of the glass you want to use 4 plexiglass will also work if you buy a large piece of plexiglass

    • @Coinmancer
      @Coinmancer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can also place the screen vertical below a window facing inward and use glass to reflect it outwards almost vertical.
      I believe this is how it’s done at haunted mansion, the objects being below the spectators but glass in front of the spectator reflected the stuff back at them.
      Any location works as long as the angle of the glass is right to reflect the screen and be seen by the spectator

    • @stephenbeecher7545
      @stephenbeecher7545 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Coinmancer The Disneyland Haunted Mansion placed the objects to be reflected both above and below the viewers. The ones above appear to be ghosts hanging from chandeliers, or the skulls flying out of the pipe organ. The objects below look like the ghosts dancing. Fun fact: The dancers appear to be backwards; the ladies are leading. This was an oversight during design; they should have been constructed in reverse in order to appear normal when reflected. I believe this was discovered and corrected for the Haunted Mansion at Walt Disney World. Something to keep in mind when making your own ghost content.

    • @Coinmancer
      @Coinmancer  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@MyUnjust the reflection on a round object will be distorted. If you want to make a crystal ball you may want to just put a flat piece of plastic in the middle for the illusion to reflect on a flat surface. It will still be inside the ball and can’t be seen so will looked like the face is inside the crystal ball.
      Probably the more common way is using a projector. There is a fabric called hollusion which is essentially transparent but can will still show an image projected on it.
      Projecting an image onto the fabric inside the crystal ball or bowl. I see there are some tutorials on TH-cam. Search for ‘peppers ghost crystal ball illusion’ and you will get some ideas.
      Also I highly recommend Joshua Ellingson’s channel as he works with every type of peppers ghost you can think up in his art displays.

    • @Coinmancer
      @Coinmancer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I simply used ffmpeg to play a video on the pi, I created a for loop so it just played every video I put in a directory back to back. Then I set this script to run ‘while true’ so it just loops forever.
      I put this script in the startup of the pi so it runs as soon as I power it up. The result is an appliance of sorts. Just plug it in and it starts playing the videos of ghosts.
      The next step would be to create a trigger or sensor and connect to the pi so it only plays a video when it detects someone moving.

    Only thing is how long is the actual life span considering tabs and phone battery life would die after like twenty minutes without it plugged in need to have it rigged so it can be plugged in for considerable duration

      My old iPhone will last at least several hours playing videos but I would recommend to keep it plugged in for sure.

    • @Coinmancer
      @Coinmancer  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The heads can be made like a peppers ghost as the video instructs, just put a white foam head behind the glass… or you can get a few styrofoam heads and just use a projector to project the video into the heads.

    Can the 'ghost' be seen from outside? Like someone walking by your house?

    • @Coinmancer
      @Coinmancer  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can see the ghost only from one side. So you would have to have the glass reflecting towards outside and they could see it but you wouldn’t be able to see it while inside from the back.

      Nothing beyond what I did before. I just loop a video but I have not added a sensor yet to trigger it only when it detects movement.
      Maybe next year!

    Glass is expensive and dangerous, plastic is cheaper and safer. I used a large plexiglass from my local hardware store, the cheaper and thinner the better it reflects more.
