Knowing how to read music is an important skill, but it's way more fun not to use any sheet music. Learning songs by ear is the most effective way to pick up tunes and actually remember them
Problem with playing by ear, is that you won't go too far in over a 30 year period. You can learn to sight read well in just 1 year. You only have to practice everyday.
Absolutely love your technique because I'm an improviser and extremely creative with my music. The main reason I want to do music in the first place is to do my own music primarily. The saxophone is an improvisation instrument anyway and this makes it all more natural and also probably encourages a lot of sax students who might have given up if they just had to rely on the old school method of reading notes.
Thanks Jay! This will help me to learn "Perfect." On "Ain't No Sunshine" I like to play the melody an octave lower -- it gives more of that Bobby 'Blue' Bland feel. I am working on an up-tempo salsa version of "Fly Me to the Moon."
In the Real Book and other Hal Leonard Books, "Fly Me To The Moon" is in C Major for Alto. That's how I learned it. Is the one from Tom Play based on Frank Sinatra's cover?
App cost $120 annually after 14 day subscription. Nothing worse than forgetting to cancel and ending up paying a boatload for something you never wanted. Would much rather buy your courses Jay!
Thanks! I always set a reminder for stuff like that so I don't end up paying if I didn't get value from the subscription. Most companies will still refund you if you forget though.
@Revolution Tutors On the suggestion of a fellow sax player, I bought one year of Tom Play, thinking that I would use it with my students. Tom Play is clumsy to navigate. If you even find the song you are looking for, which is unlikely, it might not be available for the instrument you play. Although Tom Play has thousands of songs, only a tiny few of them are something that I would share with my students.
Tomplay has fairly regular discount offers, so I just wait for Black Friday or whatever and save 40% on an annual subscription. Don’t forget to turn auto-renewal off though! I’ve used the app for about 18 months, I love how they have various levels of difficulty for each song. Makes it easy to either quickly learn a pop song, or choose something challenging to work on with my teacher.
Hello, thanks for the work... I'm asking if theres any app recommendation for the keys of the songs on the alto saxophone.... Chordify stops on guitars and etc but not saxophone
Jay, I use and like TomPlay sheet music and backing tracks, but haven't figured out to use the improve section with the chords shown. Perhaps you could walk us through how to interpret and use the chords to improvise with the music.
Well, I would like to use the application... the problem is they will not accept my visa.... that is damn frustrating.... plenty of money in there... there program actually from a programmers perspective kinda sucks.
Hello Better Sax, I am respoding to why chinese instruments have white gloves. It is to make sure u don't make fingerprints. And I don't know why some are cheap. Tho for my I use good leather gloves on my flute, clarinet when using my instrument because when selling ur instrument each tarinsh and fingerprint like on ur saxphone if u were to be not able to do it anymore when u get older. And if u want to get it at best value u'd have to have it hand polished. But leather gloves are great and for me! Because it might affect little price but it's worth to get the best value out of it when u retire. Signed, Gifted musican Specialized in: Piano, Flute, and Piano.
Nothing usually shocks for me but I’m shocked at the choices that better sex chose these are songs that I wouldn’t think he would have chose for beginners
Those leading-edge downward grace notes just reek of "smooth jazz"..... I understand that a player needs a commerical, modern style for certain situations. But being a old timer, I just can't wrap my head around this kind of playing.

The same. Agree totally!

Agree, but in the long term, but knowing how to read sheet music makes everything so much easier
Thanks to show how to use Tomplay along with your course I am amazed

"Play the Lyrics"! When Dexter Gordon was asked how he developed his gorgeous phrasing, he answered that he thinks about the lyrics.

How do you get Tomplay to show the green melody cursor?

Hey Jay, where do you get those red finger prompts if I can't read sheet music?
Holy smokes watching you play perfect by kinda improvising, and how beautiful it shounded just made me feel like I reaaaaaallly suck.
I have a quick question should I play alto sax first and then go th bari sax or go straight to bari sax this is my first time playing sax?
Alto sax
Where is the full version sir? 😊

You just learn the arpeggio notes of each chord, and fill in with other notes from the scale.
What's the name of the first song?
I have a quick question, what song did you just play ?
I'm going tomorrow to buy a saxophone
I also sing by ear but I can also read music. 🎷🎶

Thats great but does tomplayy have the lyrics with the score.?

You mean sax don't you?😅
👍🏾🎵🎶🎷
That’s the same advice I told students. Play the song not the music.
I’m making a new song right now so it’s called let it shine if that’s what It’s called OK I’ll stop now

My dad is forcing me to play saxophone😭😤😡😰
Imagine having a father that encourage music practicing...😢
Subscriptions sucks
