    • @ph0t0experience
      @ph0t0experience 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      i would really get like an XT60 connector for "fast charging" the battery using a buck converter you can set it to 4.1V, look for the charging rate on the original battery, for the C rating, or charging it at ~8 amps, will take you 10 ish hours (usb will take you ~60 hours (80ah*3.7v/5w))
      I have made a festival battery (it's at a festival at the moment) it's a 3S 90Ah battery, so still some way to go for biggest powerbank!, i charge this with a balance lead and hobby charger. (balance charging for those who wonders)

    I've rebuilt around 10 lipos and i still am not comfortable doing so. I have some suggestions though, firstly for safety, wear safety glasses. I never used to while soldering but if you short the contracts the solder can be launched and I burnt my eyelid that way. Second, always tape over all metal if it's not completely protected. Third, if it's a battery with regular wires, create strain relief. Lastly, if using cells from different batteries, discharge them to all the same voltage before joining them.
    You did well protecting it at the end however cells in parallel can't be balanced so you might run into trouble. To finish my batteries i use liquid tape, packing tape with nylon fibers, and foam or cardboard or 3d printed spacers.
    Btw my experience comes from drone racing and airsoft.
    Cool video, keep building neat stuff Wren!

    • @SirWrender
      @SirWrender 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Actually, batteries in parallel self-balance! So there's nothing to worry there. In hindsight, yes I absolutely should have been wearing safety glasses though.

    • @markbradford6862
      @markbradford6862 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      cells in parallel literally balance themselves. If when you connect two cells together they are at different voltages then the lower of the two will draw current from the higher cell. If the voltages are too different (like 0.5volts or more) then the higher voltage cell will overamp the lower cell and can cause it to puff or worse.

    When I saw that intro I knew what was coming based on experience and working at a battery store for 4 years. Come on Wren your are literally shorting every cell at once when you cut it like that plus leaving all the leads that long can cause them to short to one another. Cut them individually are different lengths and much shorter. Also I wouldn't use those cells after that. They are damaged now but still its awesome. Also I have shorted multiple SLA batteries with my work soldering iron. I am always worried I will somehow fry the iron. I might be critical here but I *LOVE* these videos where you build stuff. Also I don't think I have said this before but Wren is my favorite on the channel which is weird since this was the Sam and Niko channel. but screw them.

    Hey Wren, FYI, those cells need to have space to expand, they seemed a little tight in that box, make sure they're not too tight, else when you charge them or if you charge stuff for extended periods or if exposed to high temperatures, the probability of those cells failing/ blowing up is significantly higher! Hope you see this and adjust accordingly for safety!

    Wren throw that out. Sorry buddy but they need to be charged at a specific rate. There are special circuits designed to regulate the voltage properly.
    This may work for a while, but it has a good chance of blowing up randomly.
    You may not be around to deap with iy when it happens, and it could burn down the building.
    I build circuits on the daily, and I dont work with batteries very often, but I do know that it is extremely dangerous to diy this sort of thing, without understanding the math behind it all.

      Well to help out, I have done a few circuits and it's amazing that with some time anyone can get out their doing it. Knowing what I've learned, throwing them in parallel like that won't help when it comes to long term use because they aren't being balanced. The best thing you could do for this project wren is to get a balance charger, but that steps up the voltage. To bring it back down step the voltage down with enough current to run all your units is probably best. A switching regulator is best for efficiency but an ldo or something else works. That being said you could also just hook each lipo to each board you bought there. Those are like $2 a piece or something and come with a charge controller ic on each. That way you don't have another cell dying from over discharge, overcharge, etc. If you're really interested in this stuff wren you should check out easyeda.com. You can design and order your own pcbs. I've done a few including an amp circuit. I'm working on one now for a bluetooth speaker and it uses a lipo cell. There shouldn't be discouragement and always some sort of positive alternative at the least in my eyes 😊

    @wrenthereaper The whole battery pack, new, can hold 16000 mAh. Remove one sixth of the cells, that should leave you with 13.3k mAh tops. A regular phone nowadays has a 3000 mAh battery. I say nowadays, but that's been around since 2014. That's *maybe* 4 and some full charges. With aging batteries and an inevitably lossy voltage conversion and charging I'd expect even less capacity and charges. Where did you get that 28 full charges from? How does that math work?

      The original pack looked like it was 6 cells in series, which means each cell has a capacity of 16000 mAh. wren soldered them in parallel which means his pack now has a capacity of 80000 mAh. This can charge a phone of 3000 mAh 26 and bit times

    • @danrhyoo
      @danrhyoo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was a 6s 16aH (355Wh) pack so it's 6 cells (16Ah each) wired in series. He wired it parallel so that's 80Ah (16*5) at 1S. Another way to look at it is the pack is now 296Wh and a phone is around 10Wh so that's about 28 full charges with charge losses.

    • @SirWrender
      @SirWrender 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      You didn't account for the capacity going up when the cells are in parallel. It's a 16000 mAh battery, but with 6 cells meaning it's about 23 volts. When wired all up in parallel, that brings the voltage back down to 3.6V, but the capacity (minus the dead cell) goes up to 80,000 mAh. That's 5 times 16,000
      So this is not 16Ah, it's 80Ah. That's a big battery!

    • @SirWrender
      @SirWrender 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      But the current is maxed out by the "load", aka the USB ports attached to them. Since each USB circuit board is attached separately to the battery, they're only limited by how much current the battery can provide, which is FAR more than 4 USB boards can draw. So I'm not wrong.
