I'm so glad you made this video! Dead Like Me was definitely one of the most impactful shows I watched as a teenager. It's such a shame that tv networks seem to always push back against Bryan Fuller. The shows where he has more creative control like Pushing Daisies and Hannibal and the first season of American Gods are all absolute magic.
Also Ellen Muth deserves to have a way bigger career.

Bryan Fuller is such an opinionated and specific creator. His visions are always unique and stylistic detailed and sadly studios never understand it. That's why ultimately he pulled out and his shows collapsed. Still I would rather enjoy a short lived story from his mind than a drawn out cop-out from the studio strong arms. Thank you Bryan for Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me, and Pushing Daisies

One of my favorite lesser known stories to convey to people how much a singular creative vision seems to make a difference is Fuller's exit from "Heroes." I'll try my best to truncate it:
Fuller, starting as a normal staff writer became executive producer after he wrote the show's best received episode. He would exit after only one season to work on his own show. During Heroes' awful third season they triumphantly announced his return, making very little secret of the fact that they expected his involvement to save the show, and in interviews and press releases he appeared genuinely very excited to come back. His episode aired to great critical success. Basically hailed as a masterpiece (compared to the rest of the season anyway) and a return to form for the show. I say "his episode" because he would immediately exit the show once again, with no clear involvement in any subsequent episode, saying he didn't realize how much the show had changed since he'd left and didn't recognize the characters he loved. With few exceptions the rest of the season (and indeed the show) continued to be as negatively received as ever.
It also demonstrates how important it is to really remain true to your characters, and not use them as bumper cars the plot drives on a whim.

My mom just got me the box set of Dead Like Me. I unwrapped it and beheld the art on the cover with a huge and loging sense of nostalgia. I used to watch it all the time. Any time it was on tv, any time i went to a family friends house and they had it - i would request to watch it.
Georges story helped me relate to the world as an angsty teen/young adult. Helping me navigate my absent parents, overbearing stepmother, enstranged siblings, my "biggest" feelings.
For a show centered around death, it's enlightening.

I love Dead Like Me to this day, It is a shame, it was such a clever and original premise that had so much untapped potential. I think even a reboot with Bryan Fuller at the helm could be good, but it seems like it is mostly dead now. What a shame. Anyone who has seen Dead Like Me and liked it should also check out Bryan Fuller's other show Wonderfalls, which is the closest to the show in spirit.

INTELLIGENT AND SOCIAL SATIRICAL are the watchwords starting with theTraoöer amd following up to the end of each episode. 'All the elements in the shows are a variation to the episodes title in relation to the haed line DEATH.
Ellen Muth herself had played George-ia the youngster , stuck between childhood and adult state, to the perfection. Very brave of the makers of the show because this is a topic often totall

It was cancelled for one reason only- Showtime HATED that HBO was getting ALL the attention for the sopranos. They were determined to keep coming up with ideas and throwing them at the wall until one stuck as well as the sopranos. They didn't care if they came up with shows that were good and had decent ratings. To them that was a TOTAL failure. It had to get as much attention as the sopranos or it wasn't worth their time.

I absolutely loved this show. When Boom Boom Ba by Métisse started playing at 15:20, a flood of memories came back. My daughter, then in her mid-teens, and I would sit side by side and watch DLM. It was a treasured time spent together for both of us.
Then we noticed a change in not only the writing but so many plot holes and unanswered questions - especially in the second season. It was like someone gave the new writers a very, VERY basic outline of DLM and were told, "Now start writing!" without a true sense of what the show was about. Dead Like Me was still watchable but not near as good (but you had to be willing to ignore or overlook the inconsistencies). Then that horrible, HORRIBLE followup movie . . . ugh!
I knew there were problems with the writers but couldn't really find out what was going on. Now your explanation cleared things up. As usual, execs don't know enough to leave things alone, especially when things were working. I remember hearing about how Robert Greenblatt, then President of Entertainment for Showtime, got involved and was determined to replace DLM with Fat Actress. I posted on Showtime's site that "I hope Georgia gets a Post It note with Greenblatt's name on it". Then we cancelled Showtime.
Thanks for taking the time to do this. Now it's time to dig out my DLM DVDs and do some binge watching.

This show will always hold a special place in my heart as it helped me process my little sister's death. She was the around the same age as George even. And it's just a really good show. It's been nearly two decades later and it still holds up.
I would love to see a see a limited run series with the Dead Like Me premise helmed once again by Fuller and people Fuller trusts taking place all around the world. I mean, death is a part of every culture, but their handling of it is unique across the board. Imagine a collaboration like that. If I could choose five countries to be involved, I'd go with Mexico, Egypt, Japan, Ireland and Canada. And I'd set the American portions in either Wisconsin or Texas. There could even be cameos by the original cast maybe.

I discovered the show as a disaffected, chronically depressed 19yo and I identified so hard with George. She was my favourite tv character for years cause her character spoke so much to the negativity I was feeling at the time, but she was also a multidimensional character you could root for. I used to imagine myself as part of the reaper team, getting to leave my bland, depressing life behind and be immortal. It'll always be one of my favourite shows for helping me feel validated at a rough time and giving me hope that I could make a life out of even the shittiest of circumstances.

I want to thank you for bringing to light how amazing this show was. And that you didn’t ruin it for anyone. I lived on a small island in Florida and we had a little library system for things the actual library didn’t have. This show passed so many hands at various ages and touched each person for different reasons. I had as the owner of the DVD’s all the notes from these people but was lost due to hurricane Charlie. The note I can still see in my mind was from a 93 yr old woman that said and I quote “ I wish I could do that. We all forget everything all the time. I hope I can do that so I can help people remember what life is really about.” Sincerely Maria Familo I signed for mgm to renew but yea we got that “movie” all involved want to forget. This show was on a high. It could’ve gone some where. But alas here we are Just like “My so called life” that could’ve been amazing too

Love love LOVE this show (and love Boom Boom Ba & Métisse as a result), rewatch on the regular. In fact, recently introduced my teen granddaughter to it and she loved it too! I never understood the lack of popularity for it… but I have a history of loving media that didn’t hit the popularity mark and were reaped too soon, despite their quality. The episodes “Nighthawks” from season 1 and (of course!) “Haunted” from season 2 both blew my mind and are probably the ones I’ve rewatched most if I’m not doing a full binge. If any older show has the perfect structure for a reboot, it’s DLM.
It’s been refreshing here in my elder years to occasionally fall in love with some excellent media property *and* see it get the kind of support that allows it to continue-most notably for me Our Flag Means Death, a show that in a different time wouldn’t have had a chance.

It was such a great show. It's almost criminal how everything played out. I remember being over-joyed to learn it was renewed for a second season. But watching the second season it felt like something was completely off. So, I hoped they'd clean things up during the third season and.... nothing. Had to resort to the internet to learn that the series had been cancelled before I'd even began watching season 1!!! Turns out, the show didn't appear on Canadian television until AFTER the second season had already been filmed, broadcast to the US and cancelled. I was furious. Not only did I feel slighted because through all of this, Showcase or Showtime kept advertising the show as "New" and "award-winning" so I was under the impression it was doing fine. But then to learn it had been cancelled before I even watched the pilot? Grr. I honestly don't think I've ever watched another episode (even reruns) because of how things played out. And yet, I remember so many laugh-out-loud moments.... the dark humor of the show was the best!
I don't think it could be reboot today. It's one of those shows that was lightning in a bottle - to be able to replicate what they had is simply impossible.

I fell madly in love with the show and followed it for two seasons. Then one day I turn on the TV and see a commercial for a crime show starring Mandy Patinkin and I knew That Dead Like Me was canceled. Such a smart well written show could never stay on television. I bought both seasons on DVD and watch them periodically. Every episode is a great show. The show is well cast and well put together. Ellen Muth is priceless as always. Such a great show.
PS. I named my dog George after Georgia from Dead Like Me.
If not for the show Dead Like Me, I wouldn't have discovered Matisse and Boom Boom Ba..

A coworker introduced "Dead Like Me" by making me promise I would watch the video. I loved it immediately! With Mandy Patinkin as one of actors I couldn't resist watching it. I fell in love with the characters and binge-watched the whole thing. I then bought the videos for myself. I still can't see the word "moist" without snickering. It's how I feel about "Strangers With Candy". I miss it so I'll binge-watch it and then let it rest. George took some getting used to, I must admit. I wanted her to find her way and she seemed so lost for so long. I did sympathize with her. Her family was blah and unforgiving. Thanks for reminding us of this incredible show!

This show came at such a formative time in my life and I honestly connected more with George than any other teenage character in television at the time. It is a shame that Bryan Fuller’s early works got the red-headed step-child treatment. Pushing Daisies was another beloved short lived show!

Ya so just watched the movie and what he said was accurate. And it warms my heart. That he pointed out Hollywood's thinking about women in T.V. *** he knew how to cast great female actors ****! That's 4 sure... ! We're not all pretty in life. So a show about life and death needs to cast normal looking people in order to connect with the public!!. My personal opinion. !

Well said. Dead Like me was a favourite. Like so many that I liked back in the day, cancelled before it could fulfill it's potential. It seamed most shows that had some complexity and interesting ideas got canned. It almost felt like me liking a show was a kiss of death. I really had no time for any mainstream shows.

I remember seeing this on Showtime and loving it. I was very drawn to George and Reggie's relationship, as it really kinda reminded me of my sister and I. George was a lot like me, and it is always comforting to see yourself in stuff on TV.
I've stood in the spot the toilet seat scene takes place in 😊
I love this show, I'm glad that I watched this. Thank you for taking the time to highlight such an underrated gem!!
I also have both seasons on DVD. I didn't get the movie on DVD, & often tell interested friends to skip it. It only really opens up a can of worms, and doesn't put any of my questions to bed.
I also love "Boom Boom Ba", very catchy, and a touching add to the overall excellent music pairing of the show.
We do learn a little of Rube's backstory, but not as much as any of the other characters.
I hope your video inspires more people to dig this one up ❤

Nice. I adore this show. It's on Amazon Prime and I go back every year and watch it all. I especially love season 1. All the Fuller stuff gets under my skin and never leaves me. He really understands conflict and archetype. I love the music, I love the insane situations.. .but yes, I especially love George. I feel those teenage feelings. And I am so shocked by the cold, vindictive uncaring side of Joy... and yet laugh so hard that Bryan named her "Joy."... hahaha. Reggie's pain, really gets to me. The one thing I loved about the 2009 movie was getting some closure and love between sisters. I needed that. But.. I don't rewatch the movie like I do the TV show. With every rewatch I discover something new in season 1.. and I get more and more concerned for the wellbeing and tips for Kiffany. I'm staunchly team Kiffany.
