I've actually been crying for the past like 15 minutes watching this video. Not many things in this world I have actually shed a tear for but the story of Genie Wiley is just so fucking sad, tragic, heartbreaking and devastating. My brain literally cannot comprehend this level of child abuse. I can't fathom it. What a poor poor beautiful soul. What a poor sweetheart. I have a niece that's 13 years old right now, and Genie when she was discovered and rescued at the same age was a FAR CRY from normally developed 13 year olds, mentally and physically. 4 feet tall and 59 pounds, could barely even walk or outstretch her limbs. Severely malnourished. It just makes my heart cry. I only pray and hope that today in 2023 she knows some semblance and some SENSE of happiness and joy.
I think she could have done so much more if they treated her like a human being and not an experiment. Never understood why the mother was allowed to regain legal custody after what happened. True, the mother was also being abused by the father, but still. I think one of her therapists applied to become her foster mother but was rejected because she "hogged" her from the other researchers. Well maybe that was a good thing. She was a child, not an experiment.
To me it appears that Susan Kurtiss, the linguist, cared a lot about her. Genie’s mothers conduct was very disappointing when it came to Genie’s life following the withdrawal of the research grant. I just hope she’s being nurtured wherever she is now.
@@Asklepios27 She seems like one of the good ones. They should have let her adopt her. I think that other therapist, Jeane Butler who wanted to adopted her only wanted to do so for clout. @@JustSomeGuyLV that's sadly still not as uncommon as it should be. Our society doesn't give mental health any proper consideration- it goes against the bottom dollar 💰 I wouldn't blame any one individual in her care team or case management without knowing more specifically. We need to do better.
She was such a cute kid. What a shame. Such wasted potential. Her dad deserved to face justice. He took the coward’s way out. Not like the justice system would have served real justice anyway. Real justice would have been solitary confinement with ZERO stimulation of any kind except the occasional, impossible to predict, random beating with a 2x4 just like he did to that poor girl. And to live like that until he died alone.
@artvandelay48 Wasted potential and a shame because she’s “cute”? So what if she wasn’t “cute”? What then? Would you care less, insist on less potential or simply ignore her case?
Man I just wanna give her a hug. What happened to her was messed up on so many levels. I hope she’s happy/happier where she is today and is being taken care of by truly loving and caring people
The really sad thing is she probably could have developed completely "normally" and had a full life, but her extensive abuse and neglect have caused obvious cognitive delays (as well as, I would imagine, extensive PTSD). She never got the opportunity to reach her full potential because of her absolutely despicable father.
Sadly, she was in and out of foster care once the researchers were done with her. She experienced further abuse and neglect in the system and her language skills declined. She possibly ended up as a ward of the state. No one knows where she is now or if she’s living.
The stories of her communicating with people without words amazes me. From the nurse knowing she wanted a bucket to the butcher knowing she wanted to feel the texture of the meat. How she communicated with these people without saying a word if baffling.
She could‘ve turned out to live such a happy and successful life, and as a very beautiful girl too (which she is anyway). The only people who deserve to be treated like this are the people who treat others this way. I truly hope she was/is able to live a good life now despite what she‘s been through during and after her abuse.
I always come back to this vid when I'm reminded of genie's case, cause after everything she went through before and after her time at the hospital i just NEED to see her happy and this definitely seems like it was some of the happier times in her life that we know of. You can see that she was so curious about everything and her smile is just so pure. How anyone could hurt that poor girl I'll never understand
It’s also ridiculous that some scientists came to the conclusion she was naturally “mentally retarded” as they say on the wiki. the amount of growth she showed in such a short period of time says otherwise, I understand things weren’t as advance back then but I feel like a lot of these scientists were idiotic with some of their conclusions.
What a sweet girl. Despite the heartbreaking truth of her origin and where she ended up, it's good to see her happy for the time she spent in a better world. I wish that, in situations where people have disabilities or, in this case, developmental problems due to being deprived of essential social connection and exposed to horrific abuse, they were treated differently than how many are. I absolutely don't blame the scientists and caregivers, I know they meant no harm, but it breaks my heart a little when grown people are talked to like toddlers. Obviously, you have to have to meet them at their levels and capabilities, but I think it's important and healthy for them to be treated with the same respect and recognition as anyone else.
It breaks me to think that out there right now there's probably other children who are going through something similar to what she went through or worse and we can't do anything about it because we don't know where they are
I have no words for how Genie's story has impacted me. This is the most tragic and heartbreaking, disgusting thing I've ever heard of. How could you do this to a child?! knowing her full story it so sad that everyone failed her. Her parents. The government. The foster system. This small period of time was probably were her happiest. She was forgotten and thrown away when the research wasn't helpful to them anymore and they stopped funding her education.
Just shows how gentle this little beautiful female was. And given a chance how she bloomed. She thirsted for life. May we remember that and her in our own lives in times of ingratitude.

My eyes filled with tears watching this. I've read about Genie's case in the past and it has to be the most awful thing I have ever seen, and this footage is so beautiful yet so sad at the same time. She is such a lovely girl and seems so happy and eager to learn here, yet she was never truly loved or wanted by anyone. Genie, wherever you are today, I love you and hope you are doing well, and I am sending you all my positive thoughts.
This is the first time I’ve actually heard Genie’s voice. It’s fascinating to me that she sounds like a young ape, in terms of the pitch and breathiness of her voice. There’s also a notable looseness to her words, they’re so badly slurred because she doesn’t know how to move her mouth, tongue, lips, etc in the correct way and the muscles remain too lax. It really does seem like being feral essentially turned her into a more primal version of a human being, as if she somehow reverted back to being one of our distant ancestors.
We as human beings failed her. The people who "cared" for her only did so to exploit her and further their careers. They intentions were seflish first. She needed a loving home with stability and real honest parenting and nurturing. Instead they rail roaded her. This story and the specific people who were involved are permanently ingrained in my head with hatred
It's not a fault on the researcher's side; they took very good care of her. They had to keep turning out papers to hold onto their research grant - the money that was being used to directly help her
This poor girl would be a normal functioning woman if she wasn't horrificly abused by her parents. They destroyed her. If they didn't want her, why not give her up for adoption, so she can be loved and raised happily. Why just choose to tie her down to a potty 24/7, for her whole life with them. I think she was 13 when she was rescued and she was made to stay on that potty nearly ALL that time. She was never allowed out of her room, not spoken to, rarely fed and beaten if she did the smallest thing her parents considered wrong. I hope they rot in hell. I send my deepest love to Genie and pray she is, at least, happy now. ❤
And the mother. The mother could hear her screams, smell the shit of her potty chair, feel her dirty hair. The mother did nothing. Just as.bad as the father.
I always found it interesting that Genie asked to see her father in spite of her father being dead and especially in spite of how he treated her. She didn’t seem to have any resentment at all towards him.

it could be possible she doesnt even remember. when someone goes through severe or extensive trauma, especially at a young age, the natural body response is to try to forget. her body probably made it that she can barely remember anything so she may have no idea what happened to her. or maybe she dissociated. possibly even did

Even as imperfect as Genie’s grammar was she still able to recall what happened to her. Just because she is somewhat delayed doesn’t automatically mean that that she has no memory of what happened

Poor girl. Any one of these people should have adopted her. Why was she put back with her monstrous family in that hellish house?! Did her brother ever try to help her when he became an adult?
Uhhhh I hate to break it to you but this was a LONG time ago. Her story essentially ends when the state takes her away from the people who helped her make progress. We do not know if she’s even alive anymore because it’s all private. Even the people in these videos are not allowed the information. If she is alive she’d be 66. The last known report on her she seemed disinterested and all progress had been completely lost. It is quite tragic how even after being rescued she was taken away from the people who truly cared about her…
@@Skewer-ratyou’re incorrect. Genie was not a feral child she had been extremely abused by her Father. He put Genie in a straight jacket age 2 and chained her to a potty seat in a dark room until her teens. She had no contact with anyone, only her Father who threw food in the room and he barked at her. Genie’s brain never developed because she had no interaction with other sane human beings. The scientists used her as a human guinea pig. They tried to educate her and they failed because her brain was not able to cope because it was underdeveloped and she went into regression. She ended up going crazy, with bizarre body language and head banging, it was cruel. They were filming her and using her for scientific research. Genie needed peace and quiet and her Mother eventually won access and Genie was moved to a residential home for adults with learning difficulties. She was happy living in the home away from all the crap she’d endured.

Well, this footage was shot two years after her discovery, not immediately afterward, so she had made a lot of improvements by then. However, after coming of age and living in various group homes/institutions, some of which subjected her to extreme physical abuse, she reverted back to her old ways.
Once in a lifetime gal. I wish I could’ve changed things for her, just exceedingly sad. Her mother was selfish to not have let her go with her researcher. Glad to have come across this footage This was the first of her I ever saw. Always so curious and bright: th-cam.com/video/x3kfxz6oLjQ/w-d-xo.html
Such a lively and beautiful child, I can't believe someone could do that to her. I wish i could go back in time and hug her and tell her she is loved and that im sorry about what happened to her. I know you are still around Genie. If you ever come across this. I hope you found some normalcy in life and that you experienced happiness and real love.
As I am aware that tragic case of human isolation was continued by the USA authorities to conseal their crime in the first place - the fact that there was that tragic case of human isolation for years with no proper actions from the state officials to save this little girl from her horrific family. So, after years of relative freedom, a chance for development and the future, this little girl was closed in some specific institution with no hope for any further development, love and life actually by the state court decision and the state officials decision. Thus, the real criminal from the very beginning have always been the numerous state officials of the USA who resposible for the first - neglectance the child safety at the very beginning of her life, and then who ended her life by returning her into a prison like institution for the same kind of highly restricted existence as she experienced in the home of her parents.
Genie wasn't condemned to a North Korean type labor camp. The last report of her was by a private investigater who stated she was happy and well-looked after in a group home for for mentally challenged adults
So, she was kept in isolation for 13 years. Questions: how was she able to walk or move from being restrained all day / night? Wouldn’t her muscles have atrophy? Was she ever washed / cleaned up? Wouldn’t she have body sores? Not being allowed to eat solid food. Wouldn’t her teeth have been loose or rotted? Kept in a dark room. Wouldn’t the lack of light for 13 years cause blindness? As she reached her teens, she would’ve menstruated. Was she just left like that?
Her period of isolation began at around 20 months old. The fact that she survived to see age 13 is a miracle in and of itself, but the fact that she did learn to walk and even run is even more impressive. Her muscles did suffer atrophy from lack of stimulation, so did her brain. When she was rescued, she had the bone age of an 11-year-old even though she was nearly 14. I don't believe she was washed or cleaned up during her isolation, but I could be wrong. Who knows. She did have body sores, for example when she was rescued there was a calloused ring of pendant flesh hanging around her buttocks where the hole of the potty seat had been. It was bruised black and took several weeks to heal. Her teeth were indeed fucked. When she was rescued she had two full sets of teeth as a result of her baby teeth never falling out. She was not blind, her eyesight was fine, but she could not focus her eyes on anything beyond 10 feet from her, because that was the size of the room she was kept in. And the menstruation likely did not occur until after she was rescued. Her mental and physical health and growth was stunted to the extent that it delayed her puberty.
I usually view Genie as a person with normal intelligence who is stuck in a country where people speak a foreign language that she only very vaguely understands. If you look at tourists who are in a foreign country and can only communicate through body language and very limited verbal speech, then they will act basically like Genie.
Her story just breaks my heart. Look how much she wanted to learn. Her laughter is the best thing. She has such a beautiful soul. I want so bad to get a time machine and rescue her.

I only pray and hope that today in 2023 she knows some semblance and some SENSE of happiness and joy.
....I DO... GENIE
É triste demais 😢 concordo com você , espero q ela tenha encontrado alguma forma de felicidade, ou pelo menos não sentir dor 😢
I know, it's unfathomable, imagine who she would've been if she wasn't treated that way
I can’t imagine that someone could do that to a child. I agree too, she’s been through so much, I hope she’s found some peace.
Keep crying lil n
She was known for saying she was going to go down in history as the next Anne Sullivan for her work with "Genie". "Genie"'s real name was also Susan. I hope she's happy in the care home she's in now and with nurses, staff and other residents who love her.
@@Asklepios27any idea where she went later in life, or how things turned out for her?
@@abraxasjinx5207 She was forced into mental asylum where she intellectually and emotionally regressed. Yep, the ''rescuers'' threw this severely abused child into prison type mental asylum. What a happy ending, right? Thank the responsible children ''protection'' legal personnel who decided to give custody rights back to her mother.
@@JustSomeGuyLV that's sadly still not as uncommon as it should be. Our society doesn't give mental health any proper consideration- it goes against the bottom dollar 💰
I wouldn't blame any one individual in her care team or case management without knowing more specifically.
We need to do better.
she was such a curious, sweet kid. she deserved so much love. my heart aches
The mother should of never got custody of her or allowed to sue
Despite what she went through she still came out a perfect, innocent, sweetheart.
She actually regressed back when she was moved to an adult asylum.
@@CountryChloDoh En verdad retrocedió porque en uno de los hogares de acogida fué abusada y dejó de hablar definitivamente. Es muy triste

Man I just wanna give her a hug. What happened to her was messed up on so many levels. I hope she’s happy/happier where she is today and is being taken care of by truly loving and caring people
00:58 she looks so adorable when she shakes her head after saying “not living”
Bro ur a pedo... your comments are unusual
I wish i could have taken her place. Beautiful souls like hers, and countless others, are owed complete love and kindness.
The really sad thing is she probably could have developed completely "normally" and had a full life, but her extensive abuse and neglect have caused obvious cognitive delays (as well as, I would imagine, extensive PTSD). She never got the opportunity to reach her full potential because of her absolutely despicable father.
It's very precious to see her excitement and energy for life and learning despite her circumstances. I hope she's doing okay now, wherever she is.
What a precious girl. I feel so bad for her. I'm glad she was removed from that situation but so horrible it happened in the first place 😢
She was put right back into another horrible situation unfortunately.

Sadly, she was in and out of foster care once the researchers were done with her. She experienced further abuse and neglect in the system and her language skills declined. She possibly ended up as a ward of the state. No one knows where she is now or if she’s living.
I have waited years to come across footage of her speaking. What an angel. Tragic circumstances. Thank you for making this video.
Angels don't exist... but the Earth is fool of devils.
The stories of her communicating with people without words amazes me. From the nurse knowing she wanted a bucket to the butcher knowing she wanted to feel the texture of the meat. How she communicated with these people without saying a word if baffling.
I was sad for this poor girl, I hope she is well

I also wish her remaining years are happy ones. She deserves it.

poor girl...her story is so sad
She could‘ve turned out to live such a happy and successful life, and as a very beautiful girl too (which she is anyway). The only people who deserve to be treated like this are the people who treat others this way. I truly hope she was/is able to live a good life now despite what she‘s been through during and after her abuse.
wow what a sweetheart. I hope she's doing well and among people who love and support her.
Her laugh is precious. 🥰
God bless this child she suffered so much abuse it is heartbreaking but also these people that are helping restore my faith in humanity
And yet they abandoned her yet again. They gave up on her too easily, she’s a smart girl.
I just want to surround her with all the love in the world and take away all her pain and fear. So much love for this woman. I love you Genie. I'm so sorry for your pain. ❤❤❤❤❤
I watched a video about her but had never heard her speaking and didn’t expect to find this video
she’s just so cute and lively! even with all she’s gone through you can see she has a big heart and so intelligent, she just needs people to support her 💕
Anyone knows what's happening with Genie now? I hope she's well, she deserves it very much.
knowing her full story it so sad that everyone failed her. Her parents. The government. The foster system. This small period of time was probably were her happiest. She was forgotten and thrown away when the research wasn't helpful to them anymore and they stopped funding her education.
ouch. cruel world out here. i truly hope that she's doing okay wherever she is
Its so sad she was removed from the care of the therapist.
These were more than likely her fondest memories.
A good reminder that we take things for granted. She was encaged and abused and here she was full of life like no one else
Just shows how gentle this little beautiful female was. And given a chance how she bloomed. She thirsted for life. May we remember that and her in our own lives in times of ingratitude.
incredibly powerful footage .... shes so adorable, so strong and resilient .... really inspirational, although i wish she didnt have to go through what she did .....
This case breaks my heart. You can tell she had such a beautiful soul inside of her. It’s devastating what happened to her as a child and even after she was taken out of that hell house
Oh god that is so heartbreaking
My eyes filled with tears watching this. I've read about Genie's case in the past and it has to be the most awful thing I have ever seen, and this footage is so beautiful yet so sad at the same time. She is such a lovely girl and seems so happy and eager to learn here, yet she was never truly loved or wanted by anyone.
Genie, wherever you are today, I love you and hope you are doing well, and I am sending you all my positive thoughts.
What a lovely child.
What a miracle. What a beautiful little blameless sole. God bless her and God must adore her. How wonderful she is. God bless you little one.
She is now 66 years old
Poor kid, no child should ever go through what she went through
horrific abuse still happens today, always be vigilant always be kind
I hope that now, with her being in her late 60', she has safety love and adequate care to spend the rest of her life peacefully.
From what I've looked up, she's in an undisclosed adult facility and is doing good and living her life.
I thought they wanted to adopt her but couldn't and that's why she left their care.

it could be possible she doesnt even remember. when someone goes through severe or extensive trauma, especially at a young age, the natural body response is to try to forget. her body probably made it that she can barely remember anything so she may have no idea what happened to her. or maybe she dissociated. possibly even did
@@SH4RK-SUPR3M4CY No we know that Genie seemed have some memory of what happened during that time because at one point she did manage to say this:Father hit arm. Big wood. Genie cry ... Not spit. Father. Hit face-spit. Father hit big stick. Father is angry. Father hit Genie big stick. Father take piece wood hit. Cry. Father make me cry. Father is dead. Even as imperfect as Genie’s grammar was she still able to recall what happened to her. Just because she is somewhat delayed doesn’t automatically mean that that she has no memory of what happened

clearly all she wanted to do was learn. tragic, tragic story
I’m glad she’s learning more words faster and quicker!

Idk, maybe I’m the only one but I see a lot of personality in her despite her difficulties with language… it seems like that personality had already been her and she’s not as “feral” as we’d been made to believe, like she seems social and lively… idk really refreshing footage to see
Well, this footage was shot two years after her discovery, not immediately afterward, so she had made a lot of improvements by then.
Ever since finding a video on her during a late night internet sojourn in the beginning days of TH-cam, I feel a kinship and protective over her somehow and search her up infrequently. Glad to have come across this footage

@@MrXenon1994 Thank you for the explanations. They make sense. Still can’t believe she survived such cruelty.
I usually view Genie as a person with normal intelligence who is stuck in a country where people speak a foreign language that she only very vaguely understands.
If you look at tourists who are in a foreign country and can only communicate through body language and very limited verbal speech, then they will act basically like Genie.
