Hello good sir! I am from Hong Kong, just a mere 14 year old boy seeking advice on passing the grade 8 examination for the piano. The exam is no longer than a month and a half away, and with the scales and listening part, I don't feel confident in my abilities to even pass the examination. Granted, I passed all the other exams in one try, but I am nervous for my final one. Do you have any advice on what I should do to exactly immerse myself? Hi Music on line, thankyou for the graded pieces with teaching notes - I wonder could you put a video of the grade 5 kabalevsky (C6) with teaching note please
Hi Tez, thank you for your comment. Unfortunately there is not much demand for the pieces not included in the Selected pieces published by the ABRSM and I'msure you can appreciate that a lot of time goes into making each video along with the practice. That said, those who are Patrons of this channel www.patreon.com/musiconlineuk could request a specific video - do you have the sheet music you could scan ?
That's ok I understand thank you anyway, it's my third piece and I'm halfway through learning it. My other two being the Allegro and Sostenuto, I have noted your teaching notes on those two, many thanks for those.
Good choices. The Allegro seems to be the most popular A list choice and Sostenuto is very beautiful. Please DO let us know how you get on in the exam. (Have you checked out the Aural videos for Grade 5 BTW?)
I have and they are very useful, thank you. I'm playing the scales list as you suggest but still have the hesitation of working them out esp the minor scales &arpeggios before playing them, any hints/methods to develop a quicker recall ? Thanks
My exam is in 2 days. And my teacher says shes sure i wouldnt pass.. but she says that all the time. But im still rlly nervous because my teacher went on a holiday for one month and i lost one month or lessons...

MusicOnline UK thank you for the advice but my family thinks my teacher is good because all of her students have passed. They assume shes a good teacher and want me to keep learning from her. Though her comments make me stress for days, ive passed so far..
Totally agree - which is why I say in the video, to achieve success, you should choose the pieces that inspire you the most, so that you will play them with more musical conviction.
Hey, so I’m doing my grade 8 on Thursday, and I’m playing a Gigue by Bach, a Rondo by Beethoven, and Dr Gradus ad Parnassum by Debussy. I have a few questions. For the tempo, is it expected to be at the suggested speed they give you? If so, do you recommend playing at a comfortable speed even if it is not fast enough or try to push yourself to get the faster speed, even if it might not be as good? Secondly, for the Debussy, I’ve tried everything (alternating rhythms, metronome, slowing it down) and I can’t get it at the right speed, and regular. When I play it at the right speed, I stop articulating and my hands drift over the notes, so you can’t hear the melody as well (only for the theme). Thirdly, I cant play my pieces through without a few mistakes, but I can pick up quite easily when I do make a mistake- how many marks would I lose for this? Finally (I think), I’ve recently developed some sort of stage fright since messing up in front of lots of people I know, and I panic and rush when I play in front of people. What would you recommend I do to overcome this? Thank you so much xx
The suggested speed in the ABRSM book is only for guidance. As long as you play Within the style that the composer intended you will be credited with a good mark. It's always better to play a little under tempo with more control then to rush out of control. Regarding nerves try to concentrate on the music rather than the notes. If you want to you could share your performance before the exam with a WhatsApp group for musiconline UK with fellow students give each other feedback.in addition the experience might be helpful for you in that it gives you the kind of pressure you would experience in an exam trying to get a piece the best you can for a video performance.
Your videos and advise is extremely helpful. Thank you for taking the time to help others! That's such a wonderful thing to do. How many hours weekly/daily practice would you recommend to take the Grade 4 exam in June? I know this is subjective and depends on the the ability of the player, but a general ball park figure from your experience of an 'above average (but not exceptional' :) student, would be of immense help
I would suggest from 45 minutes to an hour, but quality rather than quantity is more important. maybe this other video might be of interest to you th-cam.com/video/36o0NqE0qFc/w-d-xo.html
By the way, will body movements(such as turning a small circle to the left/right) affect the marking of a piece in the exam? If yes, how do they do so? I am asking this because most of the time when playing a piece, I tend to focus on the music and not move my body around, as I am not used to expressing myself to others. I thus look rather emotionless in conveying the music. However, when I do move, it come and flow rather unnaturally, even affecting me playing my pieces in a bad way(wrong notes, too fast etc.). In such case, should I include body movement or not when performing for the examiner? Thank you for your time reading my comment, it means a lot. :)
You should feel natural when you play, let any movements come naturally from the emotions you create within the music. Don't force anything unnatural. At the end of the day, the examiner is listening to the sound you make. That said certain "body movements can be a distraction. What I tend to suggest to my students is to be careful how they end a piece - check out this post to understand what I mean www.music-online.org.uk/2017/11/the-sound-of-silence.html
Thanks! I've just read your post and watched the video. Indeed, I can feel that the 1st ending was ended too suddenly, kind of like 'getting my hope up, and just throwing it down'. However the 2nd ending gave me some time to linger on your playing and absorb and feel your playing. Thank you once again for your beneficial advice, I can feel as if I am definitely going to pass the exam!
I took my grade 7 earlier today and rly unsure about how it went, how many marks are lost in scales and pieces if you make small mistakes your recover from, two of my pieces Chopins 20th nocturne and revelles Walse are ones I have listened to and played musically but my Haydn wasn't great and there were a few mistakes. My aural was not good, as a teenage boy I cannot place my voice when singing. How long do you think the result will take?
+DaBossGames In my experience many people Focus only on the bad things of the examiner will also be looking for your general musicianship, as far as how long do results take here in the UK it's about 2 weeks.
AHHHHH i just finished!!! im so scared to get my results!!! my first song i messed up on the left hand for like 5 seconds :(. i bet a lot of points were taken off
I’ll be having prelude in b minor by Chopin for my grade 6 exam. Here are two questions hoping to be answered🙇 1. There’s no pedal mark on the piece, so if I’m playing it with pedal will I get a good mark? 2. th-cam.com/video/-GxqBWxewaI/w-d-xo.html , this is the piece played by Alessanara Aanmara and I think she’s playing it the way I want to. Can I play it in this way during my exam? Cause it’s a bit slow and has changed some dynamic as well as rhythm. Sorry for the long question but really thank you if they are answered🙇
I am happy to answer your question. However, I'm not sure if you've seen my "Tutorial Video" th-cam.com/video/EG-TKWm5yQg/w-d-xo.html on this piece, which I believe answers you questions about pedal and tempo, in the sense that in this tutorial I do use pedal (It's taken as a given for Chopin) and also my tempo is very similar to that of the video link you sent. More important than following an "exact metronome speed" in the ABRSM book is to capture the style and mood that the composer intended. If you still have questions about this piece after watching this video ( th-cam.com/video/EG-TKWm5yQg/w-d-xo.html ) - feel free to get back to me, preferably on that video comment section so that any discussion about a specific piece can be useful to other viewers. Hope that helps :)
Really appreciate for your reply and I did watch the tutorial just right after I comment on this awesome video. Yeah it helps a lot both your reply and the videos you made. Now my questions are answered and still don’t have any yet.❤️

Well the pieces are worth a total of 90 marks out of the total 150. If your scales and Aural are ok, it's possible to still get a distinction with poor sight reading but obviously harder. Sight Reading is a skill which will develop if practiced. The problem is people generally leave it to the last minute and then are surprised when they can't do it.
Just believe in all the preparation you have done. By the way, have you seen this? It might help. Good luck and let me know how you get on. www.music-online.org.uk/2019/01/how-to-get-distinction-in-abrsm-exams.html
MusicOnline UK Went okay I guess. I am expecting at least a pass, and merit at most. Had a few tiny mistakes in pieces, the sight-singing and the clapping back of phrase I would not say positive, sight-reading is decent, scales went well.
Very often we only remember what went wrong and focus on that. You might find my blog post on this topic interesting music-online-uk.blogspot.com/2017/12/getting-your-exam-results-vs-your.html
Haha, the commenter is most "probably overthinking it". I did two self assessments and two mock tests(my teacher tested) of my piano exam before the actual exam. In both self assessments I got 128/150, in the first mock test I got 126/150, the last 131/150(which is a distinction, I never actually got that high in piano exam whether mock test or not before). However! After the real piano exam today, I guess I am too lenient on myself; I tallied up how much I think I will get and guess the score? 138/150! That is a bit too far in my opinion, and only in my dream(sweet dream) will I ever get this high. Well, I shall wait patiently for 3-4 weeks for the actual result...
Interesting comment, it might be more useful if students came here not just before the exam but with enough time to prepare as opposed to a last minute panic
I think you'll find the channel is called Alan Chan, not Chen. I don't think it's his sister. BTW the aforementioned channel is in my opinion only popular because it has been around a long time - but as for the quality of the playing on the videos - Mmmmm?? What is your opinion?
MusicOnline UK Hey there!! I PASSED MY GRADE 5 VIOLIN WITH A MERIT! I got 123/150 :) 26 for my A piece, 26 for my B piece and 28 for my C piece! I got 15 on scales, 18 for sight reading but 9 for my aural! My mouth went so I dry I could barely swallow let alone sing and tried to stay confident but think the examiner could notice I was a little hesitant with my singing! Overall, really happy with my results 😊
Which is exactly why I say to forget about the notes and try and enjoy the music. Get lost in the character that the composer is trying to convey. Good luck and let me know how you get on.
yeah screw exams. Wish the examiners would be like heyy how are you play some pieces you like, the passion in music is important not some stupid scales and arpeggios, yeah all musicians know what staccato or fortissimo are we just wanna play
True- most pupils I teach have no idea on a good practice approach and they need mentoring in time management etc I never had the issue so can’t relate entirely but i also had amazing teachers and support.

2. th-cam.com/video/-GxqBWxewaI/w-d-xo.html , this is the piece played by Alessanara Aanmara and I think she’s playing it the way I want to.
@@koojiayong7820 You're most welcome. By the way, have you heard of our community WhatsApp group for MusicOnline UK, chat.whatsapp.com/4j1oLXNquVb9hTHxeiJCXR might find it interesting/helpful.
My exam is in 2 days
Aassinhhhhhhhhh
Good luck and let me know how it goes.
MusicOnline UK Thank you! It went quite well, but I messed up my scales and made a few mistakes in my pieces. Now I just have to wait for the results
@@meowmeowmeow9985 Thanks for reporting back. I know the waiting seems forever. In the meantime, you might find this blog post interesting on exam results Vs our expectations www.music-online.org.uk/2017/12/getting-your-exam-results-vs-your.html?m=1
Mine is in 1 and a half hours
@@hijinx6252 how did it go? mine is in two days...
can you still get high marks if you occasionally play wrong notes?
Absolutely. Far more important than just notes is musical interpretation.
Wait, if your extremely good at playing and stuff but not at sight reading, could you get a good mark
Yo thanks, I actually ended up doing well on the sight reading and I got 15/18. Altogether I passed with a distinction of 136/150
@@venomwarrior-brawlstars7972 Congratulations!!
Thank you so muchhhh
+Aiyi Mian you are most welcome are you taking an exam soon?

+Aiyi Mian Good luck!!! Please let me know how you get on. Which grade by the way? Piano?

MusicOnline UK hi, I’ll get my results before Christmas (hopefully) :)
I've got my piano exam next Thursday im rlly nervous 😯
Just believe in all the preparation you have done. By the way, have you seen this? It might help. Good luck and let me know how you get on. www.music-online.org.uk/2019/01/how-to-get-distinction-in-abrsm-exams.html
Ah, my piano exam is in about 12 hours
Any advice when taking it?
Never mind, I took it minutes ago.
I will inform you of the result after it is out.
Sorry, I usually check messages in the morning UK time, how did it go?
MusicOnline UK
Went okay I guess.
My grade 5 is in 1 week I'm so nervous!!!😫😭😕
Good luck
@@MusicOnlineUK thank you! I'm doing hard core sight reading right now to try and make it better!!
My exam is tomorrow... help.. 😭
Good luck let me know how it goes.
My teacher told me that you can’t get high marks if you play the right notes or rhythm but sounds horrible.
Good advice
I have my 3rd grade guitar abrsm exam tomorrow
Good luck and let me know how you get on.
MusicOnline UK thank you so much ❤️
MusicOnline UK I just finished doing it and to be honest it was pretty easy I think I did really good.
Don't forget to let me know when you get the result.
MusicOnline UK I GOT A 125!!! A MERIT!!
admit you’re here cause u are having the piano exam soon
Interesting comment, it might be more useful if students came here not just before the exam but with enough time to prepare as opposed to a last minute panic
Lol my exam is indeed tomorrow!
I have my violin exam tomorrow...and ahhhhhh I’m nervous
Good luck. Hope this video helped.
Grade 5 in a few minutes, hopefully this will help...
How did it go?
I am going to take my exam next april and I am sooo unprepared. I think I might fail😭
I do offer Skype lessons www.music-online.org.uk/p/skype-lessons.html
hey vivi are you Alan chen's sister?
I think you'll find the channel is called Alan Chan, not Chen. I don't think it's his sister. BTW the aforementioned channel is in my opinion only popular because it has been around a long time - but as for the quality of the playing on the videos - Mmmmm?? What is your opinion?
My exam is in an hour 😔😭😐
How did it go?
I made a few mistakes so I don’t know if I did good
How much marks do you need to pass?
Eeekkkk I have my grade 5 violin tomorrow😂💞
Good luck, let me know how you get on.
MusicOnline UK Thank you!! I failed it by 5 marks this time last year but am a lot more confident this time round. It’s my aural that lets me down!
Have you seen my E Aural Trainer Playlist?
MusicOnline UK Hey there!! I PASSED MY GRADE 5 VIOLIN WITH A MERIT! I got 123/150 :) 26 for my A piece, 26 for my B piece and 28 for my C piece! I got 15 on scales, 18 for sight reading but 9 for my aural! My mouth went so I dry I could barely swallow let alone sing and tried to stay confident but think the examiner could notice I was a little hesitant with my singing! Overall, really happy with my results 😊
Congratulations. I hope my "E Aural Trainer" Playlist will help with your aural for the next time round
thanks,i will take my piano exam at June
Good Luck - Let me know how you get on. BTW What grade/instrument are you taking?

MY EXAM IS IN 2 DAYS HELPP AHHH
Maybe a little last minute to be panicking, but at this stage my best advice is to concentrate on the "music" and forget about the notes.
@@MusicOnlineUK I feel prepared, just nervous!!
Which is exactly why I say to forget about the notes and try and enjoy the music. Get lost in the character that the composer is trying to convey. Good luck and let me know how you get on.
@@MusicOnlineUK Thankyou!!!!
im scared
I'd play Alkan concerto, 24 chopin etudes and all chopin sonatas.. lmao just kidding
Joking aside, if people weren't so exam orientated, they'd possibly do better in exams.
yeah screw exams. Wish the examiners would be like heyy how are you play some pieces you like, the passion in music is important not some stupid scales and arpeggios, yeah all musicians know what staccato or fortissimo are we just wanna play
i wanna play alkan so i play alkan, i wanna play chopin i just play chopin
Practice .... 😂 it’s not rocket science.
But there's good and bad quality practice.
True- most pupils I teach have no idea on a good practice approach and they need mentoring in time management etc I never had the issue so can’t relate entirely but i also had amazing teachers and support.
@@hbk6042 I absolutely agree and there are so many bad practice habits that a good teacher will spot and root out before they become too ingrained
