E Aural Trainer - Grades 1-3 Aural - Singing back phrases.
Singing back phrases seems to be one of the most feared parts of the ABRSM aural tests, not least because, most people taking them are not singers. But it’s all a matter of confidence. You don’t need to be a singer and in this video you will practice BUILDING that confidence.
The first thing to remember is that pitch is most important, not vocal quality. You could sing, hum or even whistle your responses, but I would recommend singing them since it projects more confidence, and the marking scheme for ABRSM Aural awards points for a CONFIDENT RESPONSE.
In Grade 1, the responses will only be on the first three notes of the key. So for example in C major, they will be restricted to C, D, and E.
And that’s about as hard as it gets for Grade 1 ABRSM Aural. If you’re only doing grade 1 and chanced upon this video, don’t stop here. If you can do the tests at Grades 2 & 3 levels, doing Grade 1 will be a walk in the park. In Grade 2, it is pretty much the same, only the range is increased to 5 notes above the key note, so in C major for example the tests could use the notes C,D,E,F or G.
And in Grade 3 the range of notes can be up to an octave from the Key note. If you found this difficult you need to support more from your diaphragm, that is the muscle below your belly button, you can feel contracting when you cough. Place your hand just below your belly button, and feel the muscle tighten as you support the higher notes.
