  • The trek 2024 Roscoe 6! Finally a roscoe 6 update from Trek!
    This is a long time coming. I wasn’t sure if they were even going to continue the Roscoe 6. I thought they’d phase it out to be honest. I think they were right to keep it and update it!
    This looks like a fantastic starter mountain bike and for the money, the components are decent, the geo is on point and now the Roscoe 6 is a contender in the value/budget mountain bike segment! FINALLY!!!

    Figured I’d leave another comment on this video too. I have had sleepless nights trying to pick out my first true MTB. I picked up a used specialized Hardrock and decided quickly I needed something I can trust given my heavy frame 280lbs athletic build for trail riding. With your help, I settled on the Roscoe 6 2024. It is only available in power surge for size XL so that will be interesting. I looked at a Marin San Quentin, the Konas, specialized rockhopper comp and the Salsa Rangefinders amongst a host of others. I think for what you get, it was worth spending more than I wanted. I’ll keep you updated when I get it and start riding. Cheers and thanks for the help! Now I have a fleet 😁😁

      Looking back I feel I probably should’ve spent the extra 200 bucks for the Rockshox Recon, the 12 speed Deore drivetrain and shimano brakes. I’m probably overthinking it because as a newcomer I don’t think those components will make a ton of difference now but maybe later? I think the new CUES should be interesting to try out tho so I’m sticking to my guns

    • @dirtyforksmtb
      @dirtyforksmtb  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      yeah for sure stick to your guns. At the end of the day 200 bucks isn’t a lot for those upgrades. Here in Canada it’s 500 more. But here’s the thing, because you’re a beginner you just don’t need it. At this point you don’t need it. Just upgrade parts as you go. The Shimano brakes on the 7 are the same as the tektro btw. Just enjoy your new ride and don’t get hung up with the other stuff. That bike has a fantastic frame which is highly upgradable. The recon is a great fork but there are better if you know what I mean!

      Hey man, thanks for watching and leaving your comment! I appreciate your kind words and happy that you found this informative. I can tell you that based on number alone, this new 6 will rip and will be way more capable than the previous generation. I have now seen one in person and yes, I can confirm everything I said in this video is correct. Absolutely a fantastic value. Also the frame is exactly the same as the higher end builds so, upgradable platform and future proof! Geo is spot on the for the so called “down country trail systems”! I just know that with everything I was able to ride with my old 6, this new 6 is a game changer!!!it will just do it better in every way! Come back sometime and let me know if you got one! I’m always interested and could talk bikes all day!!!

      @@dirtyforksmtb I definitely will! I ran into some hesitation due option paralysis.. I've been a road biker to this point but have always really wanted to get into mountain biking.. i've been contemplating getting a bike for a couple years now and said enough was enough haha. I was able to find some other bikes on sale, specifically the Santa Cruz Chameleon 2022 model on clearance for about $1.6k and was leaning that way.. but after really thinking about it I feel like i'd be splitting hairs. Plus i'd have to order online, do some assembly, and get pedals. Also, the chameleon's don't come with top of the line components either, just a great frame. Well now that the 6 has the same frame as the rest of the roscoe line, and objectively solid components, I feel much happier knowing that I can order online, pick up from my local shop fully assembled (might still pick up a new set of pedals) and drive straight to the trials with $500 in my pocket! Seems like a no brainer. And i don't see any need to upgrade any components right off the bat (maybe ever), but it's nice knowing that if I ever do I'll still be breaking even.
      I'll report back and let you know once I pull the trigger and have said bike in hand! Can't wait to get out there!!

      @dirtyforksmtb  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yeah I hear you about option paralysis! I just went through this before I bought my new mtb. The chameleon is a solid bike with a solid brand name. Of course you can’t go wrong with either. But because the Roscoe is such a good bike it makes sense to keep the extra money in your pocket! You know, for potential upgrades! Welcome to the mtb world, you’re gonna love it!! Let me know what you get in the end!

      @@dirtyforksmtb Happy to report I did end up going with the roscoe. Was able to take it out for the first time this weekend and had an absolute blast! As I mentioned this is my first foray in mountain biking, but I do know bikes pretty well in general at this point and the roscoe felt extremely solid. The only sounds I could hear even bouncing down rocky descents were the tires and breaks doing their thing. Feels like you could chuck it off a cliff and it'd be fine. The only thing that worried me going is was climbing with the smaller 46 tooth chainring in the back, but with the 28 tooth up front and the 29" wheels I had no issues whatsoever. Any climbs I failed were due to either loosing traction or balance (operator error), never felt like a needed a lower gear. And i'm just very encouraged that the new 6's are so upgradable that when/if I ever feel that a component is lacking as I improve or outgrow anything, I can pretty easily swap it out. But as it stands, everything felt great. Especially the brakes, I felt unstoppable going down hill. Especially coming from road bikes with considerably smaller discs, feels like those things could stop a train.
      Plus, I love the look of it. Not that it's a particularly important factor, but if you're spending a grand on a bike you want to like the way it looks haha. I went with the matte dark green, looks super sharp and understated, especially covered in dust!
      Thanks again for the advice, can't wait to get back out there!

      YAAAAAAHOOOOOOOO!!! NEW BIKE DAYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
      Congrats man, that’s awesome! It really is a solid bike isn’t it?! It’s good to hear to rider feedback about it. Everything on paper suggests this bike is just a solid value for money and a solid ripper. The frames on these bikes are just so good. Like you said, I am also convinced you could throw these bikes around and it’s ok in the end. Yes it’s good to know when you spend 1000++ on a bike that is looks good and is future proof! In my humble opinion the geo is spec’d for long into the future. While mtb’s are getting slacker and slacker, there is really no point to ride anything much slacker than 64 other than in a a DH run otherwise 64-66 degree head angles are really good and solid future proof angles. When you look at mtb’s in the past, some of them had 70+ degree head angles and racers were riding some pretty gnarly stuff on that type of geo spec. Now, trails are built with modern geo spec in mind. Also, I thought that the 9 speed with the 46T rear cog coupled with the 28t in the front wouldn’t give any low range issues with climbing. Coming from my Roscoe 6 had a 10spd with a 46 in the back and 28 in the front and I never wanted for more gearing. With the nine speed you lose a cog which would make the gearing a bit different but it likely wouldn’t be noticeable. Mid range gear is only affected anyway. I always found myself riding mostly in 6,7 and 8th. Yes those mt200 brakes are great. They are literally bomb proof and good stoppers when bed in well. Also your new bike has a 203 rotor on the front and that makes a massive difference in stopping power. Yet another thing you never see on an entry level mtb. So I’m very happy that you got a great new bike and are already having a blast on it. It only gets better and more addictive from here! Check in every once and a while and let me know how it’s going! Congrats again a NEW BIKE DAYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!

    Funny much are not fans of center lock but our exterior BB bearings use same tool are so I don’t see the point/irritation in dealing with six torx screws. Cool bike this is the best specked at the price.

    • @dirtyforksmtb
      @dirtyforksmtb  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey there, thank you for watching and commenting on the video! For me personally, my son’s bike and my bike both still run the cartridge square taper BB. This bb cartridge uses the inboard spline bb tool. But my sons bike has centerlock hubs. When we go away to ride, it means I am taking the bb tool as well as the torx 25 for my six bolt hubs. The other thing I find is that I can torque check my bolt- on rotors without taking my wheel off. I also find it difficult to find centerlock rotors. Also the cost to replace a lock ring is more than a couple bolts. It’s more annoying than anything though because it’s yet another non-standard in the bicycle industry! Lol. Enough about lockrings! I agree, this bike is very well spec’d! The centerlock would not steer me away from this bike at all.

    • @LaurentiusTriarius
      @LaurentiusTriarius 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For having used centerlock hubs with third party rotors for awhile on my gravel bike I have noted an important issue that's not spoken of; disc is starting to eat at the mounting surfaces, wonder if that will ever get as bad as cassettes on freewheel bodies.
      Given that centerlock has no advantage other than removing some bolts I'll definitely steer clear of them for future wheelset builds.

    Im thinking if I should get this or a specialized fuse 27.5.....

    • @dirtyforksmtb
      @dirtyforksmtb  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there and thanks for watching! Looking at the specialized fuse 27.5, it looks like the Roscoe is a better buy. A couple reasons: the Roscoe has a longer dropper post, longer suspension travel, and better fork because it’s an air fork with 34mm stanchions. You’d have to make a decision between the two wheel sizes which one you like better.
      Also the fuse is very slightly steeper head angle. The fuse also has narrower tires but that’s a preference as well. Both bikes have 9spd drivetrains, advent in the fuse and Shimano on the trek. See if you can ride them both first but I’d say the Roscoe is the better of the two. But, both are upgradable platforms.

    Question hope you can help I’m looking at the 2024 Roscoe 6 and the Roscoe 7 2023 which is $450 more you think it’s worth the difference I can’t make my mind up

    • @dirtyforksmtb
      @dirtyforksmtb  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hey there, thanks for watching and leaving you question!
      I think I can help. So the main reasons you would choose the 7 instead of the 6 are as follows:
      1. 12 spd Deore drivetrain with a clutch derailleur.
      2. A Rockshox recon 140 fork
      3. A thru spindle bottom bracket.
      So I would ask yourself, where and what would you be riding. Trails, roads, trails/roads mixed. Easy trails to medium difficult trails, jumps, drops, chunky or smooth single track, etc…
      If you plan to use the bike for medium difficulty trails and plan to progress on jumps drops etc then the Roscoe 7 is the one.
      If you plan to ride easy to medium difficulty trails with smaller drops or jumps then the 6 is your bike.
      BUT…. For a 450.00 difference I would suggest going with the Roscoe 7. You won’t be disappointed. Really good bombproof components on that bike and will see you well into intermediate progression.
      Both are very capable entry level bikes of which the value can’t be beat. Both bikes have exactly the same frame and geo. It always comes down to the components that hang off of it. Personal opinion is that the drivetrain, bottom bracket, cranks and fork are well worth the extra 450. Hope that helps! Let me know what you decide. I can talk bikes all day!

      Hey thanks for watching and leaving your comment. I love questions like yours! It makes me look at comparable bikes!
      So that polygon has it goin on for sure! As far as spec level is concerned there are some differences. The polygon has a 67 degree HTA and it is a short travel full suspension. It has a decent suntour spec fork. The drivetrain is Deore which is good. I will say that it comes down to where you ride, how you ride and what type of terrain you ride. The biggest difference between them is obviously the trek is a hardtail and the polygon is a full sus. What do you prefer? Which one can you see yourself getting more use out of? Everyone will tell you to always go with a full sus but I’m a hardtail guy. Definitely try them both out if you can. Both have excellent ratings. Hardtails get a bad rap but if you set them up properly they are too much fun! And both frames are future proof! Let me know what you decide as I’m always interested and can talk bikes all day!!

      @@dirtyforksmtb Essentially two things. I find myself in between sizes M and L on most bikes, and Trek seems to target people like me with the M/L size. It feels perfect for me so far but time on the trails will tell. I also thought that if I went full sus, I would want to go a bit further and really get something with more travel, like the Canyon Spectral 4 for $400 more. As I wanted to stay at $1200, the Trek was the choice.

      @dirtyforksmtb  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey there, thanks for watching and leaving your comment!
      All three are great bikes! Canyon has a bit better drivetrain while also having great geo numbers. The cannondale habit has good geo as well. It’s the slackest head tube out of the three but has the shortest travel fork out of the three. Geo-wise, it has a shorter reach. Habit has a great drivetrain but the points that hold me back from the habit are those darn formula hubs, 130mm travel in the fork compared to the 140mm travel in the other two. If it were me, I would choose between the Canyon and the trek. Either bike will be good. Also take into consideration that the Canyon is a direct to consumer brand. The prices are usually better. Treks are pricy out of the three. Trek has great warranty. But again, they are so similar in spec and both are very upgradable in the future.

      @dirtyforksmtb  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      no problem!! Formula hubs are usually found on the lower end model bikes. But can also be found on much more expensive models. It’s a way to cut cost on the 😊build of a bike. In the case of the Habit, they decided to spec a Rockshox fork and an advent drivetrain but went with formula hubs. To me and in my experience formula hubs do not last long. They always develop play in the freehub body and usually bearing races are not machined very well. I also notice that the stoic doesn’t come with a dropper. I don’t know about you, but I need a dropper! So it’s not a deal breaker it’s just something you’d have to factor in if you got the Stoic. The Stoic has excellent reviews but if it was me, I would still pick the trek. Only because I don’t have to pay shipping and duty and it literally comes with everything I need to get on the trails. Plus I’ve had experience with their warranty process and they are easy to work with. Also, because they are not direct to consumer, you will find a good shop that will take care of you if you need warranty work etc…
      One more thing to note about the Stoic. It does have a bit better drivetrain.

    • @dirtyforksmtb
      @dirtyforksmtb  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I went through this exact process not too long ago with my new bike. It gets to the point where you realize it’s easier to pull your own teeth out than it is to pick a bike. I spent too many hours comparing bikes!! Lol. It was a process…

I'm already spending more than I wanted to initially. I'm actually a pretty tall guy (6'4"), so some people said the frame of the Stoic would fit me a little better. If you have a head tube angle that's in the 60s and a relatively vertical seating area, than I would imagine that it doesn't give you much space on the bike. Either way, I really like both bikes and am really inclined to get the Roscoe now. Not sure if they ever have sales, but I knew I wanted hydraulic brakes and and air fork with substantial travel. I am about to order a Salsa Timberjack SLX 27.5 plus from REI, $630.00 off regular price. Dealer selling at list.

      Thank you for watching the video and for leaving your comment! I looked at the bike you mention and for that sale price, it is a great buy. I love that it has 4 piston brakes, a decent dropper, SLX drivetrain which is bombproof. The tire spec is very good with a DHR front and rekon rear! You don’t see this very often on stock builds. Fast rolling on the rear and grippy front. It’s a good balanced out tire spec. Hubs are Shimano which is good. Also front and rear boost spacing is relevant to todays spec. The geo is not quite as aggressive as the roscoes but it’s not far off. The fork is likely a coil spring but I would check that out because RS does make an air 35. The coil fork will be heavy and has less adjustability than an air fork but it is still a decent fork. Travel is 10mm less that the Roscoe spec if that makes any difference to you. 27.5+ is kind of on its way out but they are still fun:) keep in mind that the rims on the salsa are i40’s which means putting anything less than 2.8 tire width would be a crap shoot. You can get away with 2.6 on an i40 rim but it depends on the tire brand. At the end of the day when it comes down to a direct comparison, the salsa SLX is more compared to the Roscoe 7. You get better brakes and a better drivetrain with the salsa. You get better aggressive trail geo and 29er, i30 rims with the Roscoe 7. Also a somewhat better fork on the Roscoe 7 but that is debatable. The Roscoe frame is slightly more modern with its geo numbers but the salsa would be a great bike.
      It all comes down to where and what kind of trails you ride. Either bike will be good on pretty much and trail. The price on the salsa can’t be beat for its spec.
      To speak quickly about selling your bike to a dealer. Sell your bike privately. Also depends on how old your bike is and what brand and model it is. Anyway, would love to hear a follow up about what you decided on! Take care and thanks again!

      @@dirtyforksmtb The Timberjack finally came in and I was able to pick it up today. It has the single air version of the 35 fork instead of a coil. Naturally it started raining, but got a quick neighborhood ride in. The fit and finish is excellent and the paint color is nicer in person. I could tell the difference in the rear hub right away. You can get this bike in a 29er for the same price. I did some research and decided on the 27.5. I am only 5’6” so that played into the decision. I still like my Roscoe, but it made more sense to buy the Salsa on sale than the cost of the upgrades. I am hoping to be in the woods next week. Doug

      How did you get such a massive discount on that bike? I know very little about bikes and am considering the Cannondale Habit HT2 from REI. Not sure if that's a good bike or if I can find better in that price range. REI is really limited with brands.

      @@Jose-sy1je It was on Black Friday sale. It was on nationwide sale through Salsa. Only my local dealer didn’t put on sale.

    The bike is 1199 I just checked it out I’m deciding between this bike and the salsa rangefinder 29 deore 10 for 990

      Thanks for watching and leaving your comment! We appreciate it! I just looked at the specs for the rangefinder 29 Deore 10. For a difference of 209.00 more for the Roscoe, you get a dropper post, better wheels, better tires, slacker more trail ready geo and a better fork as it’s an air fork now, with more travel. You also get thru axles for both front and rear hubs. The HT angle on the salsa is much steeper as it’s in the 68degree range. The rangefinder also has that darn 141 spacing in the rear. In my humble opinion, it’s really dated. It also has a coil spring fork which weighs a little over 6lbs. The rangefinder looks like a XC rig while the Roscoe 6 takes on the more aggressive trail hardtail pedigree. It all depends on where and what trails you ride. You get more bike for the money with the Roscoe but it’s geo lends more to trail. As long as it’s the 2024 Roscoe 6 you looked at. If you looked at at roscoe 6 2023 or previous years then they seem to be the same bike almost.

      Thanks for that break down!!!!! The video you made is legit, im really green to the MTB world I started my journey on a Scwhinn Axum 5mo ago. So this is my very first real deal mtb purchase. I’ve looked at everything from the Scott scale 970 to the Canyon Grand Canyon 5. I landed on the salsa because of the 1x10 and it being on sale but if a Roscoe will be a better fit I’ll look deeper into it.

      It’s no problem! I can talk bikes all day! Lol I love to help people out whenever I can. And welcome to the world of MTB! This being your first “real” mtb purchase is an exciting time! Remember, when you buy your first mtb, you’re green. But that does not last very long. You’ll likely get the riding big. This means you’ll ride at every opportunity and you will progress faster than you think. Within about a year or two, you’ll likely have progressed to the point where you want to upgrade something in your bike. This is when what you buy now will matter. Mostly focus on an upgradable platform (bike frame) which has the most modern geo spec you can find (bike frame). After that, look at the component spec of the bike but knowing that because you bought a bike with a really good frame, you will be able to change out those stock components with ease down the road. My recommendation is to look at bikes with the following:
      64-66 degree head tube angle.
      110x15mm boost fork hub spacing
      148x12mm rear dropout boost spacing
      Tapered head tube
      A fork with an actual tapered steer tube
      A frame that can take up to 29” wheels if they are not already spec’d
      If you have a frame with these features, then you will have a solid platform for a future proof ride!
      Take a look at the following;
      Trek Roscoe 6 2024, Norco torrent HT a2, Marin san Quentin 2, Rocky Mountain growler 40, canyon stoic 4, devinci kobain 12s Deore.
      Of course there are other bikes out there but that might give you some starting points. Enjoy the process, take you time and find what suits you.

      Super Super helpful!!!!!!!!! I’ve seen all of those bikes except for the devinci. I wasn’t sure if I was even in the right lane when I was looking but I see now that I was. Thanks a lot for the tips

      One more note:
      I know this bike is priced kind of high but I know it’s on sale everywhere here. I’m assuming you’re in the states which means you can likely see it for about the 2100.00 range right now. The trek roscoe 8 is a bike that is spec’d perfectly right out of the shop. I’ve had my eye on that bike for quite some time. It’s got everything you’d ever need for a long time so I’d be wrong not to give it a mention as well. Also there is the specialized fuse comp 29.
