The TRUTH About Hardtail Mountain Bikes

I just dont understand why people “not all of course” have this affinity for full suspension mountain bikes when the hardtail is sitting waiting at less than half the cost to buy and to maintain? tell me, what am I missing. everyone talks about the full suspension mtb and the poor hardtail is left in the dust!!! join me,...

    You may or may not remember but I almost bought your ESD this summer but it didn’t work out. I ended up building up a custom Torrent S1, same frame your son has. I built mine with some fancy components and it’s funny because I’ve been asked why I put such nice parts on a such a basic frame when I could’ve just gotten a full suspension bike for the same price. What they don’t know is that I have a full suspension but to me I just love riding my Torrent because it’s way more fun than my Hightower on my local trails.

Yeah you just can’t beat a really good hardtail and because it’s a steel frame it makes it even better! I’m happy you found something. Sorry it didn’t work out on my end. No offense brother but this sounds like a rant. It sounds like if you had the opportunity you would of gotten the Full Sus, but the opportunity didn’t pan out. So to make yourself feel better you made a video to justify having a hardtail. I say all this because I use to be you. I started with Hardtail’s then gotten full suspensions, and at one point had both at the same time..twice! (Two different pairs) it can be a problem. Try your best to enjoy what you got OR JUST SCRATCH THAT ITCH AND GET THE FULL SUSPENSION. Once I did. If it’s between a fully or hardtail, it’s fully every time. Now I have a full suspension Stumpy elite EVO and a budget gravel bike For road miles. That is all I need…..For now 😈

    • @dirtyforksmtb
      @dirtyforksmtb 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No offence taken! To be honest, this video idea came from a comment I received on another video stating how refreshing it is to find some good hardtail content. It may have come across as a rant but honestly, it was intended to convey the fact that hardtails are usually looked at as a lesser bike over a fully. It was more intended for a rant about the fact that every mtb podcast I listen to or a lot of video content creators always talk about full suspensions and the hardtail gets left behind. I wanted to talk about the fact that they are wicked bikes, you get more value and they are just plain fun to ride! The story I told about the full sus was only so that people could relate and to help people realize that you don’t really need to go down the full suspension rabbit hole despite the overwhelming majority. And how in my particular case, it just wouldn’t have made sense to downgrade to that specific full suspension bike as the parts were just really not good or not on par with mine. I don’t regret for a second my bike! Yes bikes can be a problem! Lol! But at the end of the day they are fun to ride and I can talk bikes all day! Thank you for watching and leaving your comment. We appreciate it! Have fun on those bikes!

Alloy SJ's are a dime-a-dozen bike, and that ESD is probably one of the best, and more unique, HT's you can get IMO. There are so many used SJ's on marketplace in my area it's insane. I love my Salsa Blackthorn full sus, but I'm def going to be getting an ESD and a cheap used gravel bike as well at some point. Different tools for different jobs! You sir, deliver a very excellent perspective. The drive and the so called “need” for more is very powerful in todays society. Everything that surrounds us wants to imprint on to us that more is always better. But, less is always better, simplicity is always better. The “less is more” attitude is dying. You spoke a bit about TH-cam advertising slaves, it would seem like that is a good analogy. People on TH-cam want to grow their channels and eventually start to work with brands. Brands then ask for video reviews and can in some cases have full control over end product of what the video should and should not mention. Advertising though, is not new, just new ways to do it. This is the reason we haven’t sold out. I like to talk about products that I buy with my own money and my son and I just enjoy each others company when out riding. This also makes it very difficult to grow our channel. Companies have reached out to us but I’ve turned them down. It is up to each of us to make smart decisions in life. The log cabin life appeals to me greatly but in the mean time, let’s keep on keeping on, live against the grain and not get sucked in by the giant vacuum that wants to assimilate us! Thank you for watching and commenting!

    HTs like the HONZO are more than capable bikes. People ride them in Enduros and a lot ride Whistler, the Northshore, and Quebec on good aggressive HTs like the Honzo. Some even freeride. It's just marketing to have people spend the big money on FS bikes. HTs are marginal money makers. The only thing a manufacturer can guarantee cost on is their frames and in-house components. Drivetrains, brakes, and suspension always fluctuate. The average HT frame is 650 to 1000 USD. Metal to Carbon. The average FS frame is 1500 to 3500 USD depending on linkage and metal vs carbon. More margin on the FS for sure. I have been riding mtb since I was 12. I am 44, so 32 years. 24 years of that was on a HT platform. Last 8 years on FS solely because my knees and lower back can't handle the perlonged punishment on long ride days anymore. However, I have been taking a long hard look at the Honzo ESD vs the Process 153 for my next bike. I know aggressive HTs are downhill plows now. But still worried about the knee and back pain issue. Also I am intrigued with a mullet setup something less known on HTs.

      What a great insight and perspective! Thank you for watching and commenting! Yeah the ESD is honestly the best bike I’ve ever owned. It literally handles everything I want it to do. The other big thing for me is the fact that it can handle any future progression! When we went to the bike park, I thought we would be the only people on HT’s but I was wrong. I’d say we were two of about 7 other people on the hill that day with hardtails and one of them being another ESD! We had so many great comments on the fact that we were riding HT’s at the park and other comments were like “how the heck do you ride that thing here?”. I’d say you’re more than correct with your statement of marketing strategies. The bike market I personally feel is quite overwhelmingly pushing big, high end full suspension bikes and these hardtail gems are being left to die. I can completely understand the body aches and pains and that is one reason I would entertain riding a full sus right now but at the same time, for me personally (and of course everyone is different) I just love that trail feel of the HT. It’s so addicting. I did have a very quick opportunity to ride a proper DH bike with very expensive suspension and man, that bike just literally floated over the usual chunky stuff I ride. It was insane and felt polar opposite of my hardtail. But that was a DH bike. And I was on it for about 5 minutes and it was a smaller frame than I’d fit but I was curious and the owner was gracious enough to let me have a go. Anyway, if you’re considering the esd I’d say definitely and confidently it is an absolute ripper. But then again the 153, is a beauty as well! If I were to buy a full suspension today, honestly the 153 would be the one. Thanks again for watching, I also very much appreciate your perspective from a rider who has been on bikes for years!

    The stumpy would absolutely be a downgrade from the honzo esd. You will be so underwhelmed by that bike even if it had top of the line build. You need to be on a much better full suspension bike to be better than a honzo esd. I am talking trek slash, nukeproof mega, santa Cruz hightower tier of bikes, and even then, its still personal preference.

    I live in Sydney, Australia. To find a bike shop that I genuinely feel welcomed into to solve any problem I may have. Is in Melbourne. Is in another state. The fact that I can’t find a bike shop like that in Sydney is absolutely ridiculous. We have tonnes of bike shops and if ever you ask for anything about anything it’s an automatic ‘Nope, no can do’. May I please get a derailleur hanger? ‘Nope, it’s not in our catalogue and therefore it doesn’t exist’ I need a 1”1/8’ suspension fork ‘Nope, it’s not in our catalogue and therefore it doesn’t exist’ I need these brake sets ‘Nope, it’s not in our catalogue and therefore it doesn’t exist. I own 2 beautiful trikes. One I call The Aussie Trute, a completely home built adult cargo e-trike with dual suspension, all steel frame and a massive cargo box and a Ute tray complete with a tonneau cover, it has Shimano deor hydraulic brakes that I was promised would never work properly on that trike, it’s got butterfly trekking bars that I was told would never work on that trike, it’s got a bafang mid drive that I was promised would never fit on that trike. I made all of these work and they all work perfectly. My other trike is a HP Velotechnik Scorpion FS26 Recumbent. And I’m about to outfit it with front and rear Magura MT5 Estop brakes. ‘Nope there’s no way to connect 2 hydraulic callipers to one lever, there’s no solution on our website so a solution can’t exist’. Surprise surprise, I go onto google, I type into the search bar “Hydraulic brake hose splitter” what do I see? Magura T-hydraulic Hose Splitter, suitable for mt5, mt7 and so on. Australian Bike shops are exactly like American hospitals. They’re not in it for the passion and love of bikes. They’re just there to make a dollar and nothing exists outside their 25 page catalogue of overpriced K-mart bikes.

      Hey thank you for watching all the way from Australia! Your bikes sound awesome! I think the goal for most places is to get you to bring in your bike. Whenever I go in looking for parts, usually I get the same types of responses as you do. But because I know how to do my own wrenching and exactly what parts will go on my bike I know exactly what to ask for. I usually always do my own work. I do have a couple shops local that I trust but for the most part I do my own. Anyway, thank you for watching! We appreciate it!

    I have the 6120 brakes on my old WRC 26" hardtail and the SLX 7120 on my Banshee Paradox V3 hardtail. Long story short I went to three stores on my city and two of them laughed about me updating my 26" from a Gila+ Shock to a REBA RL Solo Air, not to mention about the transmission from a 3x8 to a 1x12 SLX. All of them tried to push me into a new bike. I bought the components, complete groupset, BB, wheels, brakes, dropper post, tires, etc. everything was updated from online shops. After 2 years that bike is now my wife's bike, and I ordered a new 29" frame and built my own bike and would never go back to a physical store unless there are really good deals, or I have an emergency. All of them gave me that superiority grim when I said I wanted the Banshee Paradox or the Prime (aluminium frame) and told me that it wasn't a good bike, a good bike to them is mainstream crap they sell to every noob! The fact that they gave that superiority grim makes me want to rub their face on my Banshee! Bike shops are totally biased at least where I live, I only found two shops far away from where I live that where stoked when I went there to find some clothes.

    You're absolutely right - it is a mixed bag out there! As someone who has worked in bike shops for a very long time, it can be interesting to visit other stores as a "secret shopper" and see the perspective of a brand new customer. I've experienced a whole spectrum of interactions and it makes me reflect on what I do well and what I might need to work on. I am frankly shocked to hear about your interaction with the mechanic. It is wrong from every angle. Depending how much you care about the store, I would suggest talking with the owner. That owner's employee is not only alienating customers, but literally sabotaging the store! You're absolutely correct that a bike shop needs to listen, guide, foster excitement, and check the ego at the door. That employee did none of those things. You're also completely right about checking out every store in your area. This goes for someone looking to work at a bike shop as well - it is absolutely vital to gauge the quality of the store, knowing how they interact with a random, new customer. Finally, there are plenty of terrific shops, but a previous bad experience can be hard to forget. Don't be discouraged - the good shops are worth finding! There are people out there that love bikes (some may consider an unhealthy amount) and are excited and passionate to help you with your love of bikes. Riding a bike is fun, working at a bike shop is fun, being a customer should be fun :)

      @jamiepolchies7148 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@timcutler1792 I don’t mind at all. On new bikes the margins range from 20%-35% and that 35% is if you’re lucky. Tires are my main money maker with a 50% margin along with small parts like cables being a way higher margin but that’s just because I can buy in huge quantities. Not including shipping… My service rate per hour is 50 an hour but for things like tune ups, derailleur adjustments and tire changes I do a flat rate. My tune up price is 60 dollars for a basic run through. I have another option that is more money but I only recommend that for the mountain bikers I have in my area. Labour usually gets me a 50%.

    I work at a shop and I 100% feel ya! Ego can be easy to get caught up in at the end of the day based off whatever specific preferences or ideas you may have and taking into consideration that many bikes are different and not all bikes are created equally. At the end of the day what really matters for the rider is that they're on a bike that meets their needs. It's nice if it works like it's supposed to and rides amazingly well, fits them, and is rad to look at - but realistically people bring a lot of different bikes into shops and that's often not going to be the case. The rider will often show up and want to throw some amount of money into whatever bike it is they have to hopefully meet their needs better even if it's not the right bike for them and sometimes it's easier to accept than others and regardless of what work is being done to make sure that the customer leaves feeling respected and like they spent their time productively to make progress towards their goal of a bike that works better than when they brought it in.

      @dirtyforksmtb 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for watching and leaving your comment. SLX are fantastic brakes. The have really good modulation, good power, decent bite, a bit lighter than the 420’s, east access bleed ports, shorter brake handles, more Ispec radial adjustment, banjo connectors on the caliper, and a more refined look. The 420’s on the other hand have a more on-off braking feel, direct connections at the caliper, two finger levers, excellent bite, ships with organic pads etc. For the money, the 420’s can’t be beat. So if you don’t care much about aesthetics and don’t need the modulation, the 420’s are a good pick. But the SLX is a value packed mid-tier performer and are really good brakes and value packed themselves. Phenomenal brakes. If I were you, I would look at the Deore MT6120. These brakes are in the middle of the road between the 420 and the SLX but have a better price point compared to the SLX. The 6120 is an amazing brake and very value packed.
