    As an Egyptian what can I say about Greece.
    In recent history, without their heroic support in 1956 we would have lost everything.
    In years past, they were the most honorable and fiercest of adversaries, the best neighbors and in laws, and the most loyal allies.
    We are lucky to have you.
    Our blood is shared in battle and in ancestry. You are of us and we are of you forever.

    The Battle of Chaeronea. Athens vs Macedon
    They carried the same copies of Homer's Illiad and Odyssey
    They believed in the same gods
    One fought for the glory of the Republic
    The other fought for the glory of a united Imperial Greece
    But for the duration of the battle, the gods refused to take sides.

    The ancient Macedonians were more traditional Greeks and they sought to unify all the Greek city states into one country that could identify itself as being wholly Greek and thus embracing the Greek ideal. So from being just a loose confederation of city states and Kingdoms, Alexander essentially created a unified Greek society - a Unified Imperial Greece that would go on to conquer the Persian Empire

    "Alexander the Great left behind him settlers, cities that he founded, and of course, the Macedonians being Greeks, expressed their culture. The Greek legacy is so strong because their art is so divinely beautiful. The legacy of Greek art reached Afghanistan with Alexander the Great, and it was here that the culture of Greece met with the local culture of Bactria."

    AEGAE: THE CRADLE OF THE ANCIENT GREEK KINGDOM OF MACEDONIA part 1
    The archaeological site of Aegae, next to the contemporary town of Vergina, was the first capital of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia. The site is located 65 km (40 miles) west of Thessaloniki in Northern Greece’s province of Macedonia.
    Aegae is protected by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage monument and a site of outstanding natural beauty. It is also a site of immense historical significance.
    It was in Aegae’s theater in 336 BC that Philip of Macedon was assassinated and his son, Alexander the Great, was declared king of Macedonia.

    I was in Greece a few weeks ago ( I am Portuguese), and I loved their way of living. I just mean, their priorities are so right. They enjoy the sun, the sea, just going out with friends and family and chill out in some nice coffee place for hours. I mean, we get some of that in Portugal aswell, but they take this to another level. They don't seem to have that "work addiction" that we usually see around these days, at least not so commonly. Also, I loved the way they drink coffee. Damn everybody holds a coffee cup anytime, anywhere. Was cool to see, since we Portuguese also love coffee, but we drink it fast, in a small portion and hot. They drink it iced, a full cup and slowly, lol.
    A few other things i found interesting:
    -The way they drive: It seemed at first that they were just bad drivers, but later i came to a conclusion that they are just practical. They don´t care about road rules and cops. They are just trying to get somewhere and that is the most important thing;
    -Their vehicles: They don´t seem to care if they drive a new BMW or a 20-year-old car. They might just drive a total piece of crap, they just don't give a damn. It is curious because they don't see it as a "life goal" as "I am going to save some money and buy a really cool car;
    -In contrast, they put their effort into their homes. The furniture, the design, I found it really good looking and this really seem to be one of their "life goals". Have a nice home, with a bunch of slick furniture;
    -Again, their way of living. It is so cool to see. So chilled and "don't give a f*". Totally different from the French for instance.
    Note that this was the general feel that i got being in Athens for like 2 weeks. I really enjoyed it. Now I wait until some Greeks comment on this and correct me on some topic ;)

      Very accurate. I'm amazed at how accurate the coffee part was. It's primarly about socializing and hanging around with friends, then enjoying good coffee. I just wanted to point out that Greeks actually work the most hours among OECD members. We don't skip work to go out and drink coffee. Just to break down some stereotypes that were cultivated the previous years by some politicians and media. I 've been told that we share quite a few things with Portugal and that it's a very beautiful place. I want to visit it someday.

    • @dmau5e
      @dmau5e 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I didn't know about that. I said it not because of some stereotyping , it was really the impression that i got. I didn't mean that in a bad way like calling you lazy, I just saw a good ammount of businesses that closed at like 3 pm in the day (maybe I missed the fact that you also go to work earlier than usual), and many coffee places full at many different times in the day. I am sure you would enjoy Portugal, cheers!

    The regions of ancient Greece were areas identified by the ancient Greeks as geographical sub-divisions of the Hellenic world. These regions are described in the works of ancient historians and geographers, and in the legends and myths of the ancient Greeks.Conceptually, there is no clear theme to the structure of these regions. Some, particularly in the Peloponnese, can be seen primarily as distinct geo-physical units, defined by physical boundaries such as mountain ranges and rivers. These regions
    retained their identity, even when the identity of the people living there changed during the Greek Dark Ages (or at least, was conceived by the Greeks to have changed). Conversely, the division of central Greece between Boeotia, Phocis, Doris and the three parts of Locris,cannot be understood as a logical division by physical boundaries, and instead seems to follow ancient tribal divisions. Nevertheless, these regions also survived the upheaval of the Greek Dark Ages, showing that they had acquired less political connotations. Outside the Peloponnese and central Greece, geographical divisions and identities did change
    over time suggesting a closer connection with tribal identity. Over time however, all the regions also acquired geo-political meanings, and political bodies uniting the cities of a region (such as the Arcadian League) became common in the Classical period.These traditional sub-divisions of Greece form the basis for the modern system of regional units of Greece.However, there are important differences, with many of the smaller ancient regions not represented in the current system. To fully understand the ancient history of Greece therefore requires more detailed description of the ancient regions.

      Patavium 1866 - Yes indeed! - so glad you mentioned of the Griko community - as part of Magna Grecia (Megali Ellada), Southern Italy and the island of Sicily was heavily colonized by the ancient Greeks - including another influx of Greek culture during the Byzantine era which much of the Italian peninsula was once a part of. (Eastern Orthodoxy and the Byzantine rite still thrives in places of Sicily such as in Piana degli Albanesi just south of Palermo...the liturgy spoken in Italian, Arbershe or Greek)
      As such, Southern Italy has always had a strong cultural and historical link with mainland Greece for many centuries - shared values, customs and life views - hence the famous expression, "Una faccia, Una razza" (One face, One race...I'm so happy Barby mentioned it!!) and that mutual connection and cultural traffic has never entirely ceased - the still-thriving Greek minority in the Mezzogiorno is testament to that! ;-)
      Not only that, two of the largest communities, Grecia Salentina in Southern Puglia and Bovesia in Reggio di Calabria still speak the Griko "katoitaliotika" dialect as well as modern Greek by the younger generation, both mutally intelligible to a partial extent...a strong Greek presence and influence exists even in Eastern Sicily (anatoliki Sikelia) - a small pocket in Messina across Reggio di Calabria does have a number of Greek speakers...and places such as Giardini-Naxos retains its name inscribed in Greek alphabet at its welcoming entrance gate. (quick mention: The Greek theater in neighboring Taormina). You have places like Agrigento (Akragas) with its famous UNESCO-protected Greek temples, and Siracusa (Syrakouzas - Syrakouzai) which rivaled even the glory of Athens during its height...Archimedes (Archimedes of Syracuse) was a native Sicilian-Greek!
      Proud to be both Sicilian/Greek heritage on my paternal side...Zito i Ellada!

    Most are unaware that there were Ancient Greek kingdoms in China and that Hellenism spread all the way to Japan and Korea via India. However, the fact is that the Greeks were indeed in China, and, in addition to this, Hellenism spread to the entirety of the East Asian Buddhist world. In fact, the first anthropomorphic statue of Buddha was created by the Greeks.
    The famous Silk Road that connected Europe to China actually opened because of a war between Greeks of Alexandria Eschate. Alexandria Eschate, meaning “Alexandria the Farthest,” is located in the Fergana Valley in what is modern day Tajikistan and was founded by Alexander the Great as his northernmost base in Central Asia. During the Chinese Han dynasty, it was known as “The Battle for Heavenly Horses” between Greeks and Chinese.

    I love Greece. As a Mexican I have been always fascinated about the similarities we share culturally. Strong family values, relaxed way of living, amazing food, beautiful nature, loud relatives, sexy women, blue sky and so on. I have been living in Europe for over 5 years and Greece is the closest thing that reminds me my homeland.

    Wikipedia - The ancient Macedonians (Greek: Μακεδόνες, ) were an ancient tribe that lived on the alluvial plain around the rivers Haliacmon and lower Axios in the northeastern part of mainland Greece. "Essentially an ancient Greek people" , they gradually expanded from their homeland along the Haliacmon valley on the northern edge of the Greek world, absorbing or driving out neighbouring non-Greek tribes, primarily Thracian and Illyrian. They spoke Ancient Macedonian, a language closely related to Ancient Greek or a Doric Greek dialect, although the prestige language of the region was at first Attic and then Koine Greek. Their religious beliefs mirrored those of other Greeks, following the main deities of the Greek pantheon

    everyone should visit ancient Macedonia in northern Greece and visit the new Pella museum built at the site of the ancient macedonian capital of Pella, birth place of Alexander the great..The Pella museum and its exhibits aims introduce to the public the archaeological wealth of the ancient Greek Kingdom of Macedonia to international visitors and to show the public the art of northern Greece that was not truly revealed until 1977 with the discovery at Aegai of the tomb of Philip ll, father of Alexander the Great.

    TOMB OF ALEXANDER THE GREATS MOTHER POSSIBLY FOUND IN NORTHERN GREEK REGION OF MACEDONIA.
    Greek Archaeologists have discovered the largest Macedonian tomb that has been discovered to date. It is 22 meters (72 feet) long, which undoubtedly denotes that an extremely important person was buried within it - either a king (or queen) or war hero.
    Archaeologists told interviewers that they believe that the tomb belongs to a woman - and an extraordinary one at that. “Opposite is the tomb of General Neoptolemus, who was a relative of Olympias. Also, three tomb inscriptions were found which refer to Aiakides, the family that lived here. One inscription mentions the tomb of Olympiada,” the professor states.

The first thing I did after dropping my bags in a guesthouse in Messonghi was go look for a cafe or restaurant. It was past 9pm. I was sitting in a cafe by the road, cars were speeding and beeping, cycadas were making theit noise, it was a 35 degree heat, cafe owner was shouting at his waiters, I was eating a gyros and drinking beer. It wss blissful. I want something like that again in my life.

    “Greeks” (even though the term “greeks” is not appropriate for the ancient people), were a small group of Egypto-Nort African leftovers of the Egyptian soldiers who, escaping from Egypt, crossed the Mediterranean and settled the southernmost areas, coasts and islands of nowadays known as south Greece. Here, (in their northern neighbourhood), they introduced the indigenous peoples and cultures as Thracians, Illyrians, Macedonians, who were in fact parts of the ancient race of the Phrygians (Brygians).
    Greeks (in modern terminology), today are mix of many people who lived around, but in their DNA prevails the Albanian, Turkish and Arabic genes (among the rest).

Only people from northern Cyprus deny that, and I assume you are from the north. And lets be real here, Cyprus is practically Greece; good relations and same history (except the British).

      Dank first of all we are called Cypriots. Second of all I am a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus a country recognised by all UN member states except Turkey. I was born and raised on this island and I wish to be burried here. Nobody will call themselves greek. They will call themselves Cypriots or Greek-Cypriots owing to the fact the two largest communities on the island speak different languages and we happen to speak greek. Our relations with the United Kingdom are excellent. In fact the largest cypriot community outside of Cyprus is in London. Further more tourists and expats alike visit our island and stay. Militarily the UK has two soveirgn bases on the island and is allowed to use our airspace as long as they inform our goverment. Yes relations with greece are excellent but we are not greeks (as in people from greece, some may argue we are ethinically greek but thousands of years of being conquered have mixed our genetic pool beyond simply greek, turkish or cypriot.)

      Dank as for history Cyprus suffered the same fate other cultures faced not just greeks and cypriots and common struggles and history dont automatically mean we are the same.

      Comrade Doge Bro, I'm not arguing, but I'm just saying. There is no doubt that Cyprus is a country. I'm not saying it is Greece, as part of the Republic of Greece, I'm saying it is a part of Greece as of culture and history.

    ARE MODERN GREEKS DESCENDANTS OF ANCIENT GREEKS??
    Comparison between ancient DNA and modern DNA reveals that the Greeks are descendants of the Mycenaeans - the people of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey and that only a small proportion of the DNA in living Greeks come from later migrations to Greece.
    The continuity between the Mycenaeans and the living Greeks of today is “particularly striking given that the Aegean has been a crossroads of civilizations for thousands of years,” says the University of Washington in Seattle, USA.
    Scholars have long debated whether the ancient Greek descended from the actual Mycenaeans or if it was just a part of Greek mythology and self-image. The Mycenaean civilisation was the last phase of the Bronze Age in ancient Greece, spanning from approximately 1600 BCE to 1100 BCE. As far as we know, it was the first advanced civilisation in mainland Greece.
    There is a lot of genetic overlap between the DNA from the ancient Mycenaeans and the DNA from the now living Greeks in the study. Modern Greeks share same proportions of DNA from the same ancestral sources as the Mycenaeans, with one notable exception: modern Greeks have a bit less DNA from ancient neolithic farmers.

      Macedonia is in Greece, so why would fellow Greeks troll other Greeks. If you google even for a slight minute, you will find 2 Macedonia's. 1 that is your country that is 40 years old. And then the actual Macedonia that is 3000 years old, with it's origins being from the Argead Dynasty of which Alexander the Great, Phillip II (his father), Amyntas III( his grandfather) are part of, all originating from Argos in the Peloponnese. It's character, language, economy, even it's beliefs are all showing it's 100% Greek character. Even the coins are Greek, even the symbols like Vergina Sun symbol which has been in use over all of Ancient Greece as it represents the 12 Olympian gods and the 4 elements, hence the 16 star Vergina sun symbol.
      All archaeological sites of the real Macedonia lies in Greece and everyone can visit it.
