I use the same thing On my roof. Binder clips are a life saver for any decorations. I use them for my Halloween decorations too. Looks awesome. It’s a Griswold effect

Very nice and very creative and simple I live and travel in my 45' 5th wheel toy hauler full time And every time Christmas comes around I decorate with lots of Christmas lights but I cannot use the clips of course for Shingles But yet I have came up with another creative idea for my RV and that is adhesive command hooks that are weather proof and it works perfect They are clear and plastic so they don't show And they even stay on in the hot summer heat or in the extreme Winter cold👍🏻👍🏻

If you want an easier way I use net lights , the one you can buy for bushes. Just zip tie together and lay on top of roof very easy and quick.

Thank you for this! We do an all blue light theme in our yard and house for Christman, so we thought about puting up blue led twinkle net lights on the roof. This sounds like a great way to accomplish this. ❤

I have a manufactured home which is clad with vinyl siding. There is very little wood to attach anything in place. I considered a lot of options but a bunch of binder clips and a can of white spray paint worked perfectly. Never overlook the simple things.

I don't have the nerve to actually get on my roof, I wish I did because I could do so much more. From a tree in my yard, I run some heavy string to three windows. I then use the large binder clips like you do, to hang nine sets of icicle lights from the windows to the trees. However, I just bought a 100 pack of small carabiners, for maybe 15 bucks. That'll be easier for me hanging out the window, and sliding things down.

Im an electrician very concerning you never mentioned fire hazards like ur load on 1 extension cord and also you can only connect so many lights. the string lights can only hold so much before it’s over loaded and fire potential hazard but besides that I freaking love how it turned out and I really love the binder clip idea very much so appreciate this video
I can appreciate that you are also about safety, just like me. All I do is follow the instructions on the box of the Christmas lights and practice safety first. At some point, people have to do their own due diligence. I’m glad you like the video

Why not use the plastic light holder that can attach to the shingles and girder? They are easy and when put on, they hold on for good ;-)
I do this every year too and what you wanna make sure off, is that the strand is tight - and doesn’t have slack on the strand. This can actually cause them to disconnect if the wind catches on :-) and going up again and reconnecting- that’s a bummer.
Just small advices I pass on after doing my house like this for 10th time this year.

It will but you need to have a vent on top for the binder clip to grab onto

I used 2,400
You've probably got a storage plan but I thought I'd share what I do just in case it may help you. I store all my long lengths of lights in 5 gal buckets. I can easily put 100+ feet in one with room to spare, and those are the bulky incandescent ones that don't like to cooperate. They wind OK around the outside, mostly. But even if they just lie where they fall they don't tangle. I thought since you're so good on the roof you could tether the bucket and perhaps keep sections (or parts of sections) together. Since I'm not terribly organized and it's cold when I'm taking them down I just store the binder clips and hangers in the same buckets. They stack nicely and it keeps everything dry and secure.
You likely have a much better idea but you've given me such good information and ideas I thought I'd see if I could help you.

I’m glad you like it. In theory, yes, it would be very expensive but I always purchase my lights when they go on sale for 80% and sometimes 90%. These lights I purchased almost a year ago so to do a project like this, one should buy the lights a year in advance
Would it be easier with curtain lights fee lights and less of a load on an electrical cord or could you do a surge. Protector on the back of the roof ? I am no electrician here just asking

Modern Christmas lights are LED and most of them can do 20 or 30 strands per outlet. Incandescent lights are a different story and you can only plug a few of them together or you will overload the line. I only buy LED lights.
loved it. always wanted my roof done like this. it would have been so much easier/faster for him if he'd had a helper so they could throw the light strings to each other rather than having to climb back and forth on the roof.

What I want to know is how you filmed this-- was there someone else on the roof with you or did you set up the camera yourself? Amazing effect. But this is only one possible design. You could do all sorts of things. Like a scallop design, diamonds or a plaid-- you could really go crazy with it. Next year. ;)
Thank you so much, I always film my videos by myself using my tripod. Thankfully, the tripod‘s legs are independently adjustable so it was easy to get it set up on my roof

This is sweet! My question is are you connecting all of these lights together at once? Seems like a fuse or circuit breaker waiting to pop? Or are you running multiple extension cords up to every few strands? Thanks!
They’re LED lights so it allows you to connect 20 or 30 strands together, depending on the brand. I used 3 extension cords total for the roofs

No I do not. All my lights are connected to extension cords that are connected to my regular outlets. I use only LED lights which are energy efficient and can be strung between 30-40 strands per extension cord
Long shot that you answer, how many strings of lights did you connect to each other? I see a lot saying they can only connect to like 4. Did you run multiple extensions cords up?
I only ran four extension cords up to the roof; two on the second floor, one on the porch overhang, and one on the garage. I only use LED lights and these Christmas lights allow you to connect 25 through 35 strands. When you go buy your Christmas lights, make sure you get LED only and pick the ones that allow you to connect the most strands together

Looks amazing. But I can't help to wonder why not use net lights? Seems like a couple of 20" X 6.5" net lights would be a lot easier. Also, how are you powering all the lights? You gotta be using multiple cords and outlets, right?
You can connect many, many strands of LED lights without issue.
The nets would’ve been a nightmare. I have used nets on a smaller scale before and utterly dislike them. Also, I’m using LED Christmas lights meaning I can connect up to 30 strands of this particular light together. I only ended up using three extension cords; one for the second story, one for the porch overhang and one for the garage.

Cool video. Just subbed and looking forward to watching other of your vids. At 5:32, I see flood lights on the roof pointing towards the house. How’d you “clip” those on? Or did you use a different method?
Those are landscape lighting to up-light the house. They’re low voltage. I used a single screw to hold them in place and sealed with caulking
Have always liked that look, but here in Montana my roof is almost always snow covered, so would kind of defeat it I think.
Unfortunately, you are correct, These type of lights would only look good in anything under 3 inches of snow 😕
For those who don't like the look of led, or prefer the warmth and glow of incandescent, check out Tru Tone. They're a fairly young company and I just found them this year. They are the only led I've seen capable of replicating the look and color of incandescent.
They only make c7, c9 and s14 bulbs, so if you're more into the classic roof line and eaves decorating, they could work for you. They've said that they hope to bring more products to market, so mini lights as in this application could eventually be available.
They aren't cheap though; $1.40/bulb for c7 ($1.60 for c9) before shipping. But for me, having grown up with c7 on the tree, it was becoming harder each year to find replacement bulbs. I wasn't going to give up easily, so I'm hoping the tru tones will last me a long time.
$140 per 100 light bulbs is INSANE. That’s for the 1% to buy.

I only grabbed 25 bulbs this year to try. I'm hoping to add a set or two per year if I like them, until I've swapped over.
For a tree the c7s really aren't that bad. I can deal with a $200 investment because it should pay for itself with longevity and electricity savings.
And compared to other "top" led bulbs, the price is competitive, but there's just no comparison in quality and color.
I suspect that if they come out with mini lights the price/bulb will be lower.

I’m using 10,200 bulbs on the roof. It’s not feasible or economical to consider “investing“ into something like that. Considering that I bought these boxes a year ago when they were 80% and 90% off, I only ended up paying about $280 for 10,200 lights. You can’t beat that, yeah I’ll probably get two, maybe 3 seasons of use with these lights but I’ll do it a hundred times over before I spend $408,000 on 10,200 of these lights that you preach of.
And I never understood this mindset of “buying a little at a time every single year”… 20 years are going to go by before I can get something decent looking. So no, that is an unnecessary and lavish expense that I would never recommend anybody get. But you do you.

I never suggested to use these in your application. Given the limited bulb types, I explicitly mentioned it for those who prefer a classic roof line/eaves decorating, rather than covering the entire roof as you did.
My initial comments weren't directed at you really, but for those who prefer the look of traditional incandescent bulbs.
25 bulbs. Yes. I'm not thinking about your bush. I'm thinking of my 7' tree, for which I use 5 strings of 25, c7 bulbs.
So I'm replacing 1/5 of my current lighting for the tree in my living room with tru tone.
So, yes, it's a $200 investment over a couple years, that should more than pay for itself.
Would I prefer to simply switch all at once? Sure. But first, I want to make sure that I like them as much in person as I've seen in reviews. And second, well yes, it's easier for me to spread out the cost.
I'm glad you got a good deal on those led. I would never put them on my house because I hate the color of that type of led strings, and my style is more traditional (roof lines and eaves). To each their own.
I just mentioned the Tru Tone bulbs for those whose might like such an option. Clearly that's not you.

That can’t all be on continuous strand right?
It depends on what the specific lights you but. For example the ones I used I believe I can strand 30 to 35 together. So I only need 4 extension cords

Great question! The reason is price and light output. The roll of 1000 count light isn’t as bright (led bulbs are smaller) and second reason is price. I bought my lights when they were 80-90% off a year ago. Can’t beat that

How do you get it to not blow a fuse. I gota run 5 sets to plug near shed the other 5 connects to pool area, I gota split them so they don't blow sets of lights
You’re using incandescent lightbulbs which no longer are the standard and have been phased out by many companies. All the lights on the roof, which were 5000 lights, are connected all to each other because I’m using LED lights. You can connect up to 45 strands together

The only problem is that the binder clips rust and will steak your roof and if you fascia is white it color it will stain it as well.
It barely leaves a tiny mark that nobody will see. I use them all the time with white siding. ZERO issues.
I’m only planning on having the binder clips up there for five weeks, if it was long-term then I would definitely not want to do it but it’s a quick time and rust will be minimal, if any
@@IsaacAlexanderDIY I've used the same binder clips on my fence for Halloween and Christmas for three years now and only a couple have a tiny spot of rust and there was absolutely no transfer to the fence. We get plenty of rain and snow so if there would be a problem I'm sure I'd have seen it by now.
