Gun gas vanes?? No no no. If that was true the F-16 wouldn’t have the gun gas vanes on the nose in front of the windshield. They are definitely antennas for an avionics system. But FOV fix is amazing!!!!!
Hey Bonkers, good feedback, thanks. I thought they were too far back to be the Gun Blast Diffuser system. So is that the smaller holes near the gunport mate? REF: F/A-18C A/B/C/D NATOPS (OLD) Page III-7-2?
@@AIRWARFAREGROUP The chunk of metal at the front of the gun aft of the radome is the gun blast diffuser and gun port. Part of the system also has an actuated ram-air scavenge door that opens during gun firing that allows gases to port out the louvers in front of the nose wheel doors. Would be really cool if that ram-air scavenge door was modelled in DCS. Easy way to find!!
Correct designation is APX-111X combined IFF antennae. These were part of the Avionics Modernization Program for a large number of F/A-18 C/D, but not for all. F/A-18 A/B never had them.
One thing that is different is you no longer have to hit the zoom normal function key to get it to load it loads automatically when you go in after you set and save your field of view settings.
Amazing! I have struggled to get the right seat position and FOV since starting DCS. Thank you so much for the steps and what to look at to get everything aligned proper.
Glad it was helpful! We recommend saving your snapviews.lua file from DCS Saved games folder (config/views/snapviews.lua in case they reset again. ED is working on this.
Thanks, not everyone will need it, but it's the best fix we have that replicates the designed procedure until ED solves why it isn't saving FOV custom settings like before. Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I could always be educated on more stuff...you guys make the community great [TEAMWORK] Cheers ~ Juice
Awesome video...now it would be nice to have some size references for the outside world on caucasus...like "if you are spawning at point A, the hangar on Point B ahead of you is C Meters away and should be roughly size D like in this screenshot"
Noted! I found for me working on the flight line and flying generally aviation airplanes around FBO, and hangers and stuff, gives me the perception scale of how things should look when you look at the distance on the ramp, and I know where the original settings must’ve came from is from the days of no head tracking and OVR it’s just a holdover and a lot of people need that extra field of view to make up for the 2-D screen, but it used to be a function that you could save it and it saved it didn’t get reset all the time. I’m working with the developers now and they have assured me that the information we give them is very helpful and I’m sure they’re gonna find a fix for it or a new solution or even redesigned the system.
Happy to help. It’s been working for three days for me and has restored the functionality of the process to save FOV. Dial your settings and let us know how it goes. What do you use for head tracking?
Awesome, always wondered what would be a good way to set a proper fov. Played with the zoom curves and had to press my zoom trigger to set the fov before each startup, but i didnt adjust the height at all. I have to try this. Feels like an alltime mystery is solved now 😁
Personally, I have my FOV bound to a slider axis on my HOTAS and I adjust it all the time during flight depending on what I need to be looking at. If I need to focus on distant or small details (e.g. trying to identify a runway or read text in the cockpit - especially the Tomcat with all the weathered labels and smudges on the screens) I'll zoom in, and when I'm in a dogfight I'll zoom way out to expand my peripheral vision and keep the bandit inside my FOV.
Awesome! Great tips for other gamers for sure. Thanks for sharing! For me, I study the runway on the chart before flying to a base and I look at my knee board. See what runways are aligned and I look for identifying terrain features around the airfield so I can orient myself in the air but I have not used zoom which I don’t even have anything bound right now because it’s not realistic to me. Once I stopped using the F10 map, the unrealistic zoom in the cockpit, and other things like and markers, my situational awareness went through the roof. I now can use my radar better, communicate with my wingman better, and place the picture from AWACS and a better perspective.
The working solution came out in the video yesterday. Just one video back. Thanks to Steve in the comments. You guys follow on the channel or the rockstars!
No sir, VR users are set by the Headset's native FOV. I'm sure there might be a way to adjust it in the headset, but I don't use VR. Tried it a few times, but it's not where it needs to be at the value point in order for me to jump at it. For me, the immersion of my UFC, MFDs, Panels, HOTAS, Keyboard, iPad and beer glass in my field of view is plenty enjoyment! Cheers ~ Juice
Hey Juice. I get it up to the point when you say to use 'tapback' to get the mirrors in frame. But you dont say what the keboard comand is for "tapback". I can't find it in settings. Could you please let me know? Thank you for the amazing videos...
I'm sure it depends on your monitor resolution and aspect ratio. It's different for some people and some it's not. The big difference is how far everything outside looks when you have the right look inside the cockpit and that convexed or fishy eye effect for the FOV. If yours is good, then disregard this video.
Not that I know of...everyone I know with VR say it's defined by the headset's settings, but if you want to customize that, you'll have to search for a way. I don't use VR.
Cheers Grizz...no, I am using the Teal and Orange preset and the settings covered in this video's description section. th-cam.com/video/JliYjyOu0yY/w-d-xo.html Really glad to have you on TH-cam as a WINGMAN Subscriber! AWG - Always Ad Free!
Thanks, Juice...very helpful. At 6.44 you mention "that you want to do this with your headtracking turned off". Can you just explain? Are you saying that these settings can be influenced by whether one's headtracking is on or not? Thanks for your indept work on FOV. 👍
Good question...so, with Head Tracking on, any slight movement will keep you from getting your direct-centered view you want. Once you have the FOV set, saved, and exit to restart the sim, you can turn Head Tracking back on. Others also recommend you set this with HT off, and I have tried it both ways and my angles don't always come out direct spot-on what I want. It's like parking a car while they keep moving the lines on ya!
Try this, set up your FOV in an instant action mission like ready on the ramp or takeoff and hit Right Alt and Zero on the number pad. If you don’t have those keys available, look for the command to bind it to for save cockpit angles and it’s in each individual aircraft file settings within adjust controls. Once you hit that save function, right click and exit DCS to desktop then go back in to one of the instant action missions and see if it’s saved. ED has informed me that it’s very helpful all this stuff we’re reporting and I’m sure they are close to a solution. I’m hoping they make each individual aircraft customizable in the special tab. 😀
Even with instant action missions? Check the forums if you have a slider to your zoom bound, it may be double bound to zoom normal also and some people have had to unbind that to fix it. Here's the link... forum.dcs.world/topic/302177-game-never-saves-my-fov-or-seat-position/#comment-4983179

Guess I’m not the only one who’s having FOV reset (seemingly at random) lately. Been a huge PITA getting it to stick to the saved settings.

Any time!
This was broken recently. All back to fully working again.
Amen! There’s still a factor in the mission editor that’s causing some issues but we’re gonna sort that out. Thanks for the feedback from everybody.

Tap back isn’t an official word it’s what I call it when you zoom in or out with the camera zoom in short taps instead of holding the key down.

I see. Yeah not all the aircraft have the same instant action missions available.
First thing I do with every new aircraft release.
Cool, have you had any issues with it reverting back to default on its own?
Set up the FOV but it didn't 'save' after exiting and restarting.
Saving then flying before restarting caused it to ‘not’ save.
Just dropping a note. We met at the FlightSimExpo.
