Pannal and Burn Bridge - “Pan shaped Nook and Burnt Bridge”
This week in Harrogate we come to the newest parish in the district - and we already know a little but about it. Back in the Beckwithshaw episode a while ago, we discussed the rather confusing situation that the village of Pannal found itself in a few years back, when it found itself outside the boundaries of Pannal parish. That of course became Beckwithshaw after being renamed, whilst Pannal was absorbed into Harrogate.
However in 2016, Pannal would join with its neighbour Burn Bridge to form a brand new parish. Here we are today in that area, simply known as Pannal and Burn Bridge, which is so new it still doesn’t appear on many maps! Made up of two settlements as its name suggests, Pannal and Burn Bridge are separated by the River Crimple, or Crimple Beck, which forms a natural boundary between the two for at least part of the way. The river lies in the foot of a steep sided valley, meaning both villages are located on hillsides.
Running through the area is the Leeds to York railway line, which crosses the Crimple Valley Viaduct after leaving Pannal station. That’s easily the most awe inspiring sight in this one. Elsewhere there’s a church, an old malthouse, a historic hall, a care home and a golf club to name but a few other bits.

Loving the Selby, Leeds, Harrogate walkabouts. Only recently discovered you. Disappointed people didn’t turn out at the end, I would love to have met up when you visited Selby.
