I just realized that the hair ornament is butterfly based and the magic that Fern showed Heiter when they talked about choosing magic was butterflies. Such a nice detail

A lot of small details in the series. In the first episode Frieren is holding a certain ring after himmel dies. If you have kept up with the series you know what that ring is
Did u notice that eisen told he likes sour grapes? An in the previous episode we learnt that frieren learned a spell to create grapes sour. She learnt that basically for eisen. Nice little wholesome detail right there
I made friends with a 91 year old woman I was 16. I knew her daughter. that I viewed has a granny but her mother was my friend. I knew her for 8 years. The last 2 years she couldn’t remember me but I never regretted loving her. It was dumb but I never thought about how she die within ten years. I’m giving her the biggest hug when I see her again.
The fact that qual was an exceptional mage shows when he figures out the weakness of defence magic do easily. It's like solving a math problem right after you wake up from a 80 year comma
Guy was so op they had to seal him. Makes you think what kind of weakling the demon king was.
@@Andytlp Everyone has an achilles heel, I wonder if we will see such. I can picture it being a political position, blood related maybe? I mean there have been kings of old who have been very weak physically but have control over entire armies.
@@Andytlp Hmmm, considering what we know from Flamme and Frieren about demon society and how their hierarchy works, I seriously doubt the Demon King was a weakling. They value strength and mana above all else, a very "might makes right" mentality. So why would they follow someone easily beat? We also don't know how soon into their journey they initially fought Qual, but we can get a rough estimate. Considering where he was sealed and how far they still had to travel to reach the Demon King, I think it's safe to say they would've been much weaker when they fought Qual vs when they faced the Demon King.
Which is why sealing Qual was their only option at the time. He was a threat that needed dealing with, but they couldn't put him down yet. Only after they were strong enough to beat the Demon King _and_ human magic developed enough to _specifically_ to combat Zoltraak would they be able to defeat Qual.
Who knows though, maybe that's the twist to the Hero's Party's story: "The Demon King was actually a push over lol"
@@blakeverdon4492 I'm guessing he was fodder but had op demon guards. Royalty usually is pathetically weak. But if what youre saying is correct then he mightve been a tough one and the entire party could slap him with some effort, mostly frieren nuking and black holing him or using telekinesis/manaless imagination magic.
@@Andytlp The Demon King probably respawns out of Aureole, thus why his castle is built on top of it. Presumably, he needed to "die" for some galaxy brain scheme of his.
Very nice observation there, Magy, about Himmel's death being used as a reference point for the passing of time, just like in real life.
It's so heartwarming to see Frieren get so stressed about finding the perfect gift for Fern's birthday and the lovely surprise she prepared for her.
The little flashbacks with Himmel, how certain he was that Frieren will return to take care of Qual and make sure the village will be safe - it speaks volumes of just how well Himmel knew her.
It's such an interesting concept that rarely gets explored in anime - because Frieren sealed him for so many years, that allowed mages to research an effective counter to Zoltraak and now Qual was released only to find himself completely outclassed. The passing of time being used effectively against an exceptionally powerful enemy.
Cleaning the beach as a way to finally experience what Himmel and the party wanted her to all those years ago is such a beautiful premise for episode 4. In the end, she realized the experience was worthwhile because of the company, not because there was something inherently special with that sunrise/festival.
What a crazy twist - Flamme turned out to be Frieren's teacher from a millenia ago and not just that, but now Frieren has a clear goal - a chance to converse with Himmel once more.

You also can tell qual is a very capable mage, just with the information he got from frieren about his magic he was able to change it and develop even further
That hair ornament is more than just beautiful. If you recall, they showed about a half second scene in episode 2 where a very young Fern was delighting to having created a swarm of spectral butterflies. Frieren remembered that.
"...a mere ten year..." Did you note how she changed the way she said that? In Episode 1 she was aloof about it, but at the end of Episode 4? Her tone of voice, inflections and even rate of speech changed, along with subtle shifts in body language - she may understand it to be a tiny fraction of her lifespan, but in that time she has come to accept how important ten years is.
All that being said, the first four episodes are considered the prologue for the story, so you now know the core premise and are ready to see how things go from here!
It's not a show about constant action like others, like, fighting the demon, monster, curse or whatever of the day. It's about the journey, the people we meet on our way and the relationships we form with them.
But when it comes to action, you'll see, it's spectacular 🙂
Btw, do you remember in episode 2 when Fern's complaining of collecting odd spells like making sweet grapes sour? Then in episode 3, Eisen says that his favorite food is sour grapes. And now in episode 4, you can see her making them for him. This is such another level of wholesomeness 🥰
Its still about the action tho. Technically it is an action/adventure anime
@@Degenerick of course there's action in it, great action I'd say, but it's certainly not "about" the action, like an ordinary shonen or whatever.
It's, as I said, primarily about character building and human relationships and feelings. And that's why I like it so much.
This anime has few action scenes. But when they will show it, they go all out.

So glad you're followed my recommendation in your stream a few weeks ago, and are reacting to this modern masterpiece !
Visually, storytelling wise, and musically, this series is something that's really out of this world. Certainly the best anime of last year (and this one) so far.
You're in for a wild journey.
The fact you're discovering it right after LOTR is the cherry on top of the cake. It gives you awhat if scenario of what could have happened after the final chapter in Mordor.
Another fantastic fantasy anime I could recommend you is Delicious in Dungeon, also on Netflix. Very different vibe (it's basically a cooking show disguised as a fantasy dungeon crawler anime, and it's hilarious !), but also instantly one of the greatest fantasy anime out there, and it's coming out weekly now on Netflix, so you could enjoy (and record your reactions) of an episode of Delicious in Dungeon and Frieren on the same day, if you want to have your daily dose of fantasy anime. One for hte hilariousness and fun adventures, and the other one for the heavy emotional damage on your feelings ^^. I promise you you won't regret it. I've been doing it for a few weeks, now, and it's been a wild ride !

Frieren is the best kind of wholesome anime, the lessons and actions aren't over the top like most of those other same animes, makes it way more believable and realistic.

The manga is actually just "Sousou no Frieren," which is translated usually in English as "Frieren the Slayer," which you see in Episode 8. THIS IS WRONG, a bad translation. In Japanese, "Sousou no" is the act of "seeing one off" as in a funeral, so the manga's name actually means "Frieren the Undertaker." This has multiple meanings, the two most important being Frieren being an elf and nearly immortal, sees off all her friends, but the second meaning that she will kill demons; "to see off" a person is a euphemism for assassination. Other meanings include Frieren "seeing off" the Magical Age of Elves and Demons and ushering in the Age of Humans with Fern, which is more extensively explored in the First Class Mage Arc.
On My Anime List (MAL), Sousou no Frieren has topped FullMetal Alchemist. Both are Shonen manga written and illustrated by female mangaka.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned it before, but all the names in Frieren are German words and have significance in the story. For instance, Himmel's name means Heaven or Sky. Pay attention to when they show a lot of sky, it's typically a reference to Himmel is some way. For future reference, here is a list of the names:

The ending credits show Frieren sleeping on Flamme's grave, while singing, "Are you alright?" No, no I am not. Why must you tear my heart out like this?
If its 1v1 qual possibly have a chance for a fair fight or he could escape. see how fast he could analyze new spells. frieren had to end him fast.
Among demons, even though Qual is a lower rank demon compared to the seven sages of destruction, he is a genius in analysis. This is a trait he shares with Frieren.
