Another excellent adventure. You have inspired me to do one of my own. Currently on a train to Sheringham in Norfolk. Going to ride back to London tomorrow.
Fantastic! Hope you have a great ride. I’m away right now but looking at the forecast, you might have a good day for it. I was not far from Sheringham, in Cromer, a few weeks ago. Have a great adventure!!
About time you had some decent weather, what a belter! It's a great experience riding in the proximity of a noble bird of prey on the wing, mine was on a murky wooded lane in Cornwall. Proper goosebumps!
Oh wow, yes that storm in Cornwall was terrible. I got lucky with this one up north, though. I must say, the roads and scenery in Northumberland are first class, I can't recommend it highly enough.
Hello Gary! First up, happy new year to you. Secondly, thanks so much for the encouraging comment. Thirdly, have no fear, London Centuries will be back! It was never my plan to go away for so long (stuff just happens, nothing particularly bad) but I'm making plans right now for later this year and fingers crossed I might have some quite nice rides to turn into videos. Your support is appreciated!!
Great video, as ever. Your enjoyment really came across. You seem to like night riding - me too. It's calm and quiet with the sunrise to witness. It looked flat (?). How many kms?
Yep, a night like that is hard to beat. Silent and empty and like you say, very calm. I’m away right now but it was about 200km, maybe 220 or so. And I expected it to ‘feel’ hilly but it didn’t - yes, a few ups and downs and never boring but not difficult at all. Fabulous riding country up there. Thanks for watching.
That’s so lucky! Home for me is central London, when I first moved there were clouds of cockney sparrows but these days we don’t even see them: it’s pigeons, gulls and parakeets only. Years since I’d seen an owl. Thanks for watching, Paul!
Glad that you enjoyed watching it, this was a particularly nice one to ride. Ok so I was lucky with the weather but that’s such a great part of the world to ride in. Happy riding!
no idea if you check in here from time to time but...... since you haven't posted for a while, just wanted to say "hope all is well with you and yours".....
did you drive a long way or need many trains to set this one up? Anyway, brilliant as usual. you are one in a million, never stop being a civil servant in your clark kent day job. man you are one superhero. actually i guess this was one of your "sprints" to catch that sun, rather than the marathons across europe. true about the recent weather - feel sure is this is what global warming is doing to as in uk, flaky colder days with a occasional half-warmth, but by the gods spells of monsoon cold rain with bits of hail sometimes, wretched without goretex and/or a house......
Logistics: this one needed trains at both ends but I had an excuse to be in Carlisle, so it was really just the return leg (from near Alnwick, just north of Newcastle) that I had to stump up for. Weather: I share much of what you say below, climate obviously worries me, I’d thought at one stage of trying to calculate all my carbon emissions for these trips, particularly the intercity trips, to compare with cars, train etc. Might still do that, actually. But main point is that sitting in a car is SO BORING and doing it yourself… isn’t!! 😃
That looked to be great fun! I did the solstice RIde to the Sun (Carlisle-Edinburgh) one year which was good but road surfaces was very poor in places. Nothing like riding towards the sunrise though, something special about that. Logistics wise, I interested in how you got you+bike to the start and away from Bamburgh?
Yes, that was a lovely route and i fancy doing in daylight some time. But Carlisle - Edinburgh appeals too - I’m looking at a possible Newcastle-Glasgow-Newcastle to further explore the borders area. Logistics: I had an excuse to be in Carlisle anyway so just rode from there. And got a train back from the other end, near Alnwick. Happy riding!
@@londoncenturies Thanks for the reply - I'm always interested in the logistical side of long, linear rides; living in the north I find the Dunwich Dynamo a planning nightmare each year. Off topic, but vaguely related to your writer themed rides, are you aware of the Hockney Trail in East Yorks? Looks to be right up your street and ripe for good B-roll content!
How do you plan your route? For an international route like Venice to London, do you do it exactly the same way? And are you happy with your method? Thank you for this unique TH-cam channel.
Hey thanks for the comment. Short answer = I’m not 100% satisfied with my method, it’s still a work in progress, slowly getting better. I’ve tried most of the software out there, currently preferring RideWithGPS because its data about road surfaces seems more reliable (note: NOT perfect but not bad) better than most. It’s always a toss-up between flexibility and cost. For Venice-London, my top concern was keeping costs down so I planned a route ages in advance, with cheap Airbnb wherever possible but it meant I absolutely had to stick to schedule, no room for injuries or mechanicals. Big cities (Strasbourg, Luxembourg) are v expensive but in-between places can be very cheap (I seem to remember the airfield in northern France was less than £20/night with use of kitchen) so it evened out a bit. Then from there I just had to get back to London as quickly as possible. I suppose the alternative is to go by credit card all the way - maximum flexibility but also maximum price!
@@londoncenturies Thank you very much for the detailed information on route planning. I will try RideWithGPS next time I have a chance. I look forward to your next adventures :) All the best.
Hi Paul, thanks for the comment (and the ones before, too). Yes, shortest day ride is possible and I'm aware I haven't posted anything for ages now. All's basically well at London Centuries Central but life suddenly got in the way of riding over the summer and I'm struggling to get the miles in to build the fitness back up. Hope to get things working again for early next year but it's going to take a bit of time to get there, is the truth of the matter. Thanks for following the channel, I appreciate your support!
I can’t remember my average speed but this was not a quick ride, just a nice nighttime pootle down those completely empty roads. The yellow thing is an old Garmin with a protective case around it. I’m not the biggest fan of their stuff but it works ok. Thanks for watching!
I enjoy this channel and hope there is more to follow in the new year. He is very informative and interesting.
Hi hope all is well, been rewatching your videos even better second and third time around. Looking forward to more
Brilliant idea for a ride! Glad the weather was on your side. Thanks for sharing!
Hi love your videos hope your going to continue to post

Yes, it's fantastic, isn't it. What did you see on your lane in Cornwall then?
Great idea for a ride, great video. Thank you.

Thanks for watching and for leaving the comment, too! Glad you liked it.
You were due some good weather after Cornwall 😮. Looked a great route. Despite riding through the night you managed to get some great content. 👍
Oh wow, yes that storm in Cornwall was terrible. I got lucky with this one up north, though. I must say, the roads and scenery in Northumberland are first class, I can't recommend it highly enough.
I hope all is well with you, and yours. I've truly missed you cycling adventures. Take care.

thank you for sharing this..... inspirational, educational, and entertaining... as always....
lovely thanks
Glad you liked it and thanks for watching.
We see barn owls every evening from our kitchen window… my late father-in-law made me an owl box for Xmas a few years ago!
That’s so lucky! Home for me is central London, when I first moved there were clouds of cockney sparrows but these days we don’t even see them: it’s pigeons, gulls and parakeets only. Years since I’d seen an owl. Thanks for watching, Paul!
Loving those Tawny owls. Great video, as per usual.
Love it. Was on me olidees so didn't get back to YT till now. Perfect night for it.
Hope you had a good break Mark, I've been away myself so am just getting back to it, too. Happy riding!
Cheers, what a fantastic night of riding, weather, wildlife, and then the sunrise. So special.
Another brilliant video. A great idea and well documented. Such a nice one to watch. Thanks for posting

Hi, have your thought of riding east to west for the winter solstice? Sunrise to sun set
Hi Paul, thanks for the comment (and the ones before, too). Yes, shortest day ride is possible and I'm aware I haven't posted anything for ages now. Any idea what your average speed is? The yellow electronic device. Is it a Garmin? A GoPro? Nice video.

I’d love to hear your stats ? Strava?
LC is on Strava
He’s right! 😀
‘Might take a while to post my next ride’ do you have a complaints department? 😀
😃
