    Incredible effort. Your tenacity for endurance is most inspiring. Loved every second of it, aswell as your previous content. The French away from Paris are a delightful bunch. So patriotic. I go to the Le Mans 24hr and it’s the same there.

    What impresses me most is your good spirit, taking the time and having the energy to film and narrate your journey -
    Not to mention getting to Paris and going back home to London by bike💪👍👏

      Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching in the first place. If I have a snarky agenda (it’s not that sneaky really) it is that I believe that we are capable of far more than we often think we are. Happy riding!

    As brother of a 6-time PBP-er, it was great to follow you on the journey and put into context what he's been telling us for 20 years now. Also enjoyed your LLEL ride (which I've done as a non-Audax randoneur over 6 days).

    • @londoncenturies
      @londoncenturies  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think I know who you’re talking about! If so, I’d been following his progress (and was rooting for him to have a good ride - he’d done a blinder at LEL and it would have been great to see that kind of performance again). Lots to say about that whole situation actually but the organisers of PBP are very clear that it’s not a race. Yes, a lot of people will try and go as quickly as they can but it’s rather different if you’re competing against yourself compared to trying to turn it into a competition against others. Big difference, in my view. Happy riding and thanks for watching!

    Massive achievement my friend 🎩👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 …a little footnote to your vlog, the guy in Brest with the damaged lever i felt for him so much. I had the same problem on LEL with my front lever, damaged at Barnard Castle but managed to limp into Hessle on the front ring to meet a mate with a spare bike. Really hope he managed to sort the problem so as not to spoil and put an end to his amazing adventure 🤞🏻

    • @londoncenturies
      @londoncenturies  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, in fact I was pretty amazed that he managed to find someone who could supply and fit an Ultegra shifter at midnight in Brest but there you go, that's PBP! Randonneuring is supposed to be about self-reliance and from you say, you had to do that when the bad luck struck you on LEL. Kudos to you for carrying on. Happy riding!

  • @Verysimpleyetverydifficult
    @Verysimpleyetverydifficult ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Massive kudos to you, LC. You make it look easy. I don’t know how you can peel off such massive brevets with fairly limited mileage in between? I did a 300km in June, no saddle sores the ne t day, but I could barely stand up or sit down - I think the issue is shocking core strength. I harboured long term dreams of doing PBP, but given my state after 300km, I couldn’t imagine doing that again 3 times, whatever the time limit. You said you had 300km to go like it was nothing!
    Great video and would welcome more content on prep for such an event, how you managed kit and so on (didn’t see any drop bags - you looked pretty light?).
    And finally, congratulations on being the only UK cycling TH-camr that I follow, who didn’t catch a flesh eating virus, get abandoned by their mates, break a collar bone….. etc at PBP (haven’t got to Amy adventures yet!).

    • @mallardzoom2890
      @mallardzoom2890 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I was a little worried for LC's ride after watching all the other youtubers! Amy has posted a few videos now on PBP, and I was amused to see LC make an unsolicited cameo in one of the early ones!

    • @londoncenturies
      @londoncenturies  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks v much for watching! Regarding prep for PBP, it’s pretty much all there up on the channel - in other words, I didn’t really do much else. Before LEL last year I went to the gym at least weekly for a few months for core work plus neck etc but didn’t bother this time. So yes, I think core is important but also it comes naturally with time and then (hopefully) sticks around once you’ve built it up. Oh, I go bouldering with my kids reasonably regularly so that probably helps me but there’s no discipline there. Re having 300 left: it felt like we were nearly home - sprint finish!! 😀

      Yes, I’m aware! I really felt for Adam in particular, that’s terribly bad luck to get ill and be forced to stop, and then everything else that happened to him (which was not bad luck and not his fault!). Glad to see he’s back on the bike now, that’s the spirit.

    You’ve pretty much summed up what PBP is as an event. Fast out then try to get back as best you can. I was back for my 4th PBP and the last 2 I’ve ridden from London like you. This really adds to event and we’re so lucky to be able to do this. Riders from Brazil, India, Australia, USA etc have to spend more time and money and miss this experience so we’re very lucky here in the UK. What also makes Villainess-la-Juhel so special is that the riders park right in front of all the onlookers which makes you feel like some sort of celebrity when really all you are is a sweaty cyclist. I was there mid morning and had slept for a few hours in Fougéres so wasn’t looking haggered and no children offered to carry my tray. I don’t want to burst your bubble but I suspect the children carry trays for tips that a lot of cyclists give them.
    It doesn’t distract from what is an excellent event. Perhaps see you at 1001miglia next year. Totally different again to LEL and PBP.

    • @londoncenturies
      @londoncenturies  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh! That’s very interesting what you say about Villaines! I didn’t realise that. Yes, I’m with you on the difference it makes being able to ride there and back, it makes it very special. Interested that you’ve gone back multiple times too. Obviously I’ll be looking for future events and am looking for ideas so thanks for that and for watching the vid. Happy riding!

    I'm so glad you made it safely and had a blast. The web is full of unlucky vloggers Adam Watkins, Richard Lake, Page, et al. Last year a rider crashed into me from behind the first day of an organized event. After my recovery, I've become a solo rider. I never quite regained my confidence in other riders. I've suffered from the condition Adam came down with. It's very easy to feel these guys pain.

    • @londoncenturies
      @londoncenturies  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I’m aware of all those you mention (and some others as well). The level of experience at an event like PBP is SO broad, it means there will be loads of people who haven’t much experience of right group riding, and everyone is so psyched up, particularly at the start, it’s a recipe for a large number of crashes. I was thinking about this at the start and trying to stay safe and actually if I had my time again I might have started on the Monday morning when I think the roads would be a lot safer because most of the field would be away already. I think Adam got incredibly unlucky (and was treated v badly with that coach debacle, which looked awful, never mind how gracious he was afterwards). Thanks for watching!

      @@londoncenturies You're absolutely right about the starts. I have ridden PBP before (this one would have been my fifth PBP) but back in the day they used to start the 90 hour group in three huge waves the first leaving at 10pm. Now they start lots of smaller groups much earlier it is a bit safer but I miss the spectacle of enormous trains of red lights snaking through dark country lanes. All going like the clappers!

      @@londoncenturies yes it was nice to meet you to. Re the ride, unfortunately I got sick with a stomach bug. As a result I wasn’t really able to eat or drink anything the day before the ride. My earlier comment seems to have vanished into the ether, but I've watched your video now, congratulations, what an amazing ride and fantastic effort! I'm really glad it went so well for you! Your joy on the bike is infectious and it was wonderful how warmly you were welcomed and supported by the locals. That really must have made it a special experience. In fact in all the videos I've seen of PBP so far, the local support has been the highlight for me as a viewer. Well done on completing PBP with such a good time (and riding there and back!)
    PBP is a unique cycling experience which can, as you say, be experienced in different ways - social group-riding; pushing yourself and maybe riding solo; just taking it steady and soaking up the atmostphere, hospitality and countryside.
    A pity I didn't see you at the start (although I watched and cheered the A-group going off - so you may appear in some footage I took).
    There are many Audax Mondial events to sample around the world should you wish to go along and capture some of those events too.

    Fantastic achievement and great video - keep them coming. Which crossing would you recommend for someone just trying to get across to France from the UK in order to then ride to Barcelona: Newhaven - Dieppe or Portsmouth - Caen?

    • @londoncenturies
      @londoncenturies  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey nice plan! The Dieppe route is a lot cheaper and has more ferries but you don’t get to sleep overnight (at least, I’ve never managed), so if I was setting off on a long one and wanted to be fresh, I might be tempted to pay the extra and go Portsmouth-Caen but it’s going to depend on your priorities. That guy I was riding with in the vid - Philippe from Versailles - he was telling me about his club mates who rode Paris-Gibraltar in, wait for it… 6 days, at 400km a day. I think your route would be better actually - not as hot and still with great mountains. Hope it goes well for you!

      @londoncenturies  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Glad you liked it and thanks for watching, Phil. Yes, the bike was fine, the French roads were smoother, faster and generally better than around here and I was using 32mm tubeless tyres again (same ones as previously) but chosen for long-distance comfort rather than speed. I had to let the pressure down a bit because the daytimes were so hot ( I actually blew a tyre off the rim before PBP started, totally terrifying, must have been the air expanding in the heat).

      Thanks Alex! Well, funny thing you should ask because yes I certainly used to use gels + powder all the time but am moving away from that stuff now. I'd felt v sick on the Land's End ride so decided to do PBP with no gels at all, and just a couple of packets of powdered carbo/protein mix in the bag for those bits of feeling like in a deep dark hole. So I stopped and ate 'real' food at every single control (not just sandwiches, I was looking for potatoes, rice, vegetables etc). And I felt fine - well, very tired obviously, but no stomach issues at all. Interesting, huh? I take it you're thinking about how best to fuel yourself on long rides. What's your strategy?

    • @alexcarter1079
      @alexcarter1079 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, at the moment I don't do the distances you do in your rides🥴, but with more time on my hands I want to start doing regular Grand Fondo distances and above. Usually take a banana, a bottle of squash and stop en route at a coffee van. I do use a mix of energy gels, bars and packets of powdered energy drink in my longer distance running, found a brand I like and don't get any adverse effects from them so will take some of them out on a ride soon - along with my usual piece of fruit😂!

      Yep, there was a certain amount of soreness but honestly not too bad, especially after a few days off at Chartres. I haven’t been to Swiss Normandy, all the bits I’ve seen (limited entirely to routes to/from the ferry ports so far, but I’m planning to explore a bit further afield fairly soon) have been flat and fast (except Rouen). I think it’s a matter of slowly building up the mileage, no more than 10% more than your max each time. Thanks for watching and for commenting too. Bon route!
