I cannot watch/listen to this song without tearing up. Renee (Angelica) has lost a child (as have i) and the empathy in her voice is gut-wrenching “There are moments that the words don't reach. There is suffering too terrible to name. You hold your child as tight as you can And push away the unimaginable. The moments when you're in so deep It feels easier to just swim down.” Lin is a master with words & emotions & full circles. Elizas ability to forgive him twice borders on the unimaginable. And Lin has made us care about these people who lived 200 years ago as if they were our friends down the street.
Act 1, Eliza, the song; That Would be Enough (to Alexander): " *I don't pretend to know the challenges you're facing* , the worlds you keep erasing and creating in your mind. *But I'm not afraid, I know who I married* . So long as you come home at the end of the day, *that would be enough* ." Act 2, Alexander, the song; It's Quiet Uptown (To Eliza): " *I don't pretend to know the challenges we're facing* . I know there's no replacing what we've lost, and you need time. *But I'm not afraid, I know who I married* . Just let me stay here by your side, *that would be enough* ."
It’s even sadder when you think about the fact that in the first song is when he first learns about her being pregnant with Philip and in this one they’ve lost him
It’s like it took these tragedies to understand each other’s point of view. But they were on the same side the whole time...the challenge in the growth of a marriage and a country.
The Hamilton effect: you’re not even all the way through the soundtrack but have already identified the “classic Eliza” melody. The genius of Lin. It’s going to come back, have your tissues ready.
The "you knock me out I fall apart" from Dear Theodosia and the "if I could trade his life for mine, he'd be standing here right now, and you would smile" get me every time T^T
The knock me out I fall apart kills me every time. Both kids died by being “blown away”. Phillip by a gunshot and Theodosia in a shipwreck. It’s a chilling parallel.
@Jacob Restituto Apparently Alexander was so grief-striken he had to be held up by other people at Philip's funeral because he couldn't stand on his own. To make matters even worse, his daughter Angelica had a mental breakdown due to Philip's death, a breakdown she never recovered from. "Alexander was inconsolable, not only grieving over the untimely death of his son, but also blaming himself. At Philip’s funeral, he was so distraught that friends needed to support him physically at the grave. Acquaintances who saw Alexander in the weeks and months that followed were shocked by how changed he had become." "...one friend wrote that he had never seen "a man so completely overwhelmed with grief."" "Philip was mortally wounded, and, after he was brought back to New York, suffered for hours while his frantic parents looked on, helpless, until he died. Hamilton fainted on his way to his son's grave, and, according to his friends, the grief and horror of the event was permanently etched into his face thereafter. That Hamilton blamed himself for his son's death there can be no doubt, because it is equally doubtless that Philip fell defending his father's honor on the dueling ground. Hamilton was inconsolable following Philip's death; and to add to his guilt and anguish, the Hamiltons' oldest daughter, 17 year old Angelica, with whom Philip had been inseparable, descended irretrievably into madness after hearing of her brother's death."
@@JacobRestituto In the next song, right at the start, after Jefferson says “Can we get back to politics?” Madison says “please”. In the show, Madison is wiping tears as he says this. Comedic relief.

@FullmetalandtheFlame Yes. Her scream just before this. It sends me every single time. I'm almost grateful its not in the soundtrack because I can't be crying in public like that
Wait till you see this song in the play... the turnaround in this song is played very well by the actors. Next couple songs have some amazing beats though!
@@JacobRestituto I don't know if the next song's first line shows up in the cast recording, but when you do watch the musical, watch Madison (the actor Oak, he's the one who was Hercules Mulligan in act 1) cross the stage right after, as Jefferson says, 'Can we get back to politics??' The transition from super sad to business is well done.
Jeez, can we get back to politics PLEASE!?!? FYI when you are done with Hamilton then you get to enjoy the Hamilton Mixtapes! Kelly Clarkson does a killer version of this song but the mixtape is not just covers of the original Hamilton song (although some are). The song "Immigrants (We Get The Job Done)" is pretty awesome.
The song Immigrants we get the job done mentions the struggle of Nicaragua, where my mom immigrated (and fled) from, and it touches my heart. Its almost never mentioned in popular culture and it meant so much to me.
I surprisingly didn't cry when I watched Hamilton the first time but when I started listening to the soundtrack on Spotify now I can NOT get through this song without tears streaming down my dang face😭😭😭
Hamilton was (according to Ron Chernow) a very devoted and loving father. He mentions in the biography that none of the children seem to have had a bad word to say about him - not even in private letters where they might have said things in confidence which they never thought would be public. If my memory serves me, every evening after he would come home from work he would spend time with the children.
See. Everyone sees him as this monster that didn't care about Eliza or led Philip to the duel on purpose, they can only see his flaws and errors. But it turns out, he's certainly not. He was devoted to everyone he loved and I firmly believe that all of the deaths in his life (he was literally a death magnet, poor man) have been affecting his mental health and he probably wouldn't have made some decisions if he hadn't been so woozy with losses all the time. Sure, some mistakes were glaring and he didn't listen to people who were concerned for him, but all in all, when we see him in his entirety, he was a kind devoted man who simply had the misfortune of experiencing more misery in his life than anyone "normal" should have to.
@@yunamchill9169 As someone who has experienced 30+ losses in my family in the span of 20 years I can most certainly agree with what you said. Too bad they didnt have therapy back then. Unless they did sort of
@@susannahdoxtater1038 I'm so sorry about your losses. I have only recently experienced the loss of one of my grandpas and I'm still not healed. I agree 100% with the therapy. That would most certainly have also helped Laurens. He was also chronically depressed, tried to kill himself several times or didn't care about life. There's also the thing that he possibly had internalized homophobia. A modern therapist could have tried to help him, with meds and sessions and all. Phillip gets "blown away" in his prime and a few years later so does Burr's daughter. Quite literally. She and her son are blown away on a boat and never seen again.
Lin is an emotional musical genius! I felt everything he wanted me to feel and then some! This might beat out Phantom of the Opera as my favorite and that's saying something lol
I highly recommend doing this with In the Heights, Lin's first musical. It has rap and Latin musical elements in it. The actor who played Laurens/Philip is playing Usnavi in the film version when it comes out now NEXT summer.
I love this song on so many levels. The music itself sets the tone for the heart wrenching lyrics. I worked as a grief therapist. I have worked with parents who have lost a child. I have heard this lament. It breaks my heart every time I hear it. I love the message of healing it. They come together as a couple. This type of loss can, and does, take a couple a part. I think it says a lot about the message this song brought us through the eyes of history.

Also, this song in the Disney Plus version is SUCH a heartbreaker. It's like Lin and Renee's voices have the emotion turned up to 11 and makes it look like they're having to struggle to sing through their tears. GOD it hurts.

What's the meme?
Act 1: Fun, rapping, upbeat, theres a French guy
Act 2: Pain, heartbreak, french guy is gone
