I can't listen to this whole song without crying. You know someone's talented when they can make you cry over one of the founding fathers...and I'm not even american.
King George III didn't rap either (nor did Samuel Seabury), but that's because in the show, the revolution was portrayed through fast-paced rapping, and they were the old-fashioned slower melodies
@@Mycatmillie24 yes, lin and philippa visited that place before the play moved to Broadway and near there lin sat there for hours and came up with some melodies for some songs.
i think the reason "the orphanage" hits us so hard is because throughout the entire musical they continuously remind us that alexander is an orphan. so at the very end when we have eliza opening up an orphanage and caring for orphans it just feels so right and beautiful and bittersweet.
Angelica, one of Elizas children actually went insane after Phillip died. she was stuck in a sort of eternal childhood and believed that Phillip was still alive, even talking to him
Angelica actually tried to kill her brother, the second Philip. she believed that if he died, the original Philip could come back. that’s when she went to a mental institution.
Eliza lived into her late 90’s which in that time was extremely rare. She was one of the few people who lived to met both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln
The first lines of "Let me tell you what I wish I'd known when I was young and dreamed of glory. You have no control who lives who dies who tells your story" are from the song History Has Its Eyes On You, also sung by Washington. The concept of Eliza "putting herself in the narrative" first appeared in That Would Be Enough when she asked to be part of the narrative, and once again in Burn when she erased herself from the narrative. Eliza and Hamilton actually had 8 kids together, and the orphanage she created is still functioning today in New York.
Lin titled the show just “Hamilton” bc he felt it is equally about Alexander and Eliza. In fact, during the curtain call, usually the main character bows at center stage, But Alexander actually gives the center of the floor to Eliza for the bows.
Can we talk about how Angelica was _still_ there for Eliza and even helped her out with telling Hamilton’s story? She really was a great sister to the very end
Lin’s genius writing has SO many layers! Yes, it’s Hamilton’s legacy that it ends on but really, it was every character grappling with their own legacy that so empowers the soundtrack!

I usually had pretty good control of myself. I didn't cry the first time I listened to the soundtrack or watched a bootleg. But when I watched it with my mom, I just broke like a baby.
When Eliza says she lives another 50 years it completely tears my heart out. I’m 57 now, and can’t imagine going on for another 40 or 50 years without the man I love. But I am so glad Lin wrote this. About all I knew about Hamilton was he died in a duel with Burr, but that was because of the milk commercial back in the 90s
At the end of the play, Eliza looks into the distance, the light goes out over the stage and she gasps. LMM has said that it was the moment Eliza finally passed and she saw Alexander again.
Fun fact: Hamilton’s 3rd son, Alexander, ended up being the lawyer representing Aaron Burr’s second wife during their 2 years of divorce proceedings. An agreement was finalised on the day Burr would die in 1836! Burr was haunted by Hamilton till the day he died.
Every time I hear that song I bawl like a baby! Her strength is so inspiring. What until you see this one in the musical. The ending is...so heart wrenching!
You should react to Lin and Chris Jackson performing “One Last Time” (from the show) at the White House in front of Obama. Was really emotional because it was his last term (like Jackson’s character Washington)
I've heard that afterward Obama congratulated them and Chris broke down and was crying for about an hour and apparently Anthony was like "Man up, dude...", but I totally would have cried with him.
@@yunamchill9169 I mean I get it you put so much work into your craft especially this Musical blood sweat tears and for someone like President Obama to congratulate you and compliment your hard work is overwhelming because you never think you get to perform the for the leader of the free world if that makes sense idk that’s just my thoughts lol
After the war Hamilton refused his officers pension - partly because congress did not have enough to pay the soldiers (if I remember correctly) but I think maybe he didn't want to taint his legacy as a "war hero" by looking like he did it for money. Downside was he wasn't counting on dying young (47) and leaving Eliza and their kids without income. Eliza had to fight to get the right to his pension back but in the end they granted it to her (luckily). Eliza's wish was for her husband's story to be told and she asked three different people to write his biography, but no-one managed to complete it in her lifetime, unfortunately. One of their sons completed a biography a few years after she passed. She was very devoted to him right to the end and would often be seen standing by a bust of him they had in the home in her older years and saying "I want to see my Hamilton again". He did make mistakes and he was far from perfect, but it is still a love story.
Someone who knows more, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I also think they thought that Eliza's father would leave them a large inheritance when he died. However, no one really knew that he had donated a good portion of his wealth to the war, the Continental Army, and the young Nation - so there was far less there to divide among his children than they expected...
I had the same reaction at the end of the show. It really hit me when Eliza sang about Angelica, "She's buried in Trinity Church near you...": All of these characters were now gone, and the vibrant world I'd been in for the last 2 hours+ was now fading back into history. I was sad that it was over.
One of my favorite lines is when Eliza goes “I raise funds in DC for the Washington Monument.” To which Washington goes “She tells my story!” And Eliza counters with “I speak out against SLAVERY-” In the musical you’ll see Washington standing behind her making this face 😟 because Washington still owned slaves.
Hamilton is such a great musical. Something I found out, Philip was alive for 19 songs in the musical and he lived to be 19. Hamilton lived to be 47, and if you include the Lauren’s interlude, that adds up to 47 songs in the entire musical. If you wanted to continue to do musicals, I would suggest Newsies (the Broadway musical) just because the music is amazing and most of the time they’re dancing while singing (there is a recording of the Broadway musical on Disney plus as well). Also just anything Jeremy Jordan cause his vocals are insane.
I love the harmonies in this song. I have never noticed military snare to the drums before in all the four years of listening to Hamilton. Thanks for pointing out a new dimension to this song that I had never heard before. Hamilton was all about proving himself through his military service. It like a way to musically telling part if his story. I love how Hamilton leans into the founding women of our country like Eliza.

ok so now; we need breakdown of other musicals because there are so much different styles and it's so fun to see someone getting sucked in musicals when they never thought they would
Another great reaction! SO much to say but I’ll go with this thought till you see it. The thread that gives me chills is that Eliza wrote herself into the narrative when marrying Hamilton, wrote herself out of the narrative after his affair, but in the end she WROTE the narrative of his life! Wow! Fun Fact: Jefferson wouldn’t have been able to make the Louisiana Purchase without the financial system Hamilton set up! Lin has almost singlehandedly (with this genius writing) introduced Broadway to a whole new generation (youngers) and rap to a whole new generation (olders)!!! Thank you for engaging us history geeks and musical theater geeks! I’ve enjoyed every minute!! Glad to hear there’s lots more to come! If you run out of content, we always have suggestions!!
I really enjoyed your reactions to this amazing musical!! ❤️❤️ I'm so happy that it's on Disney+ right now so other people get to fangirl over Hamilton too😂
I have to wonder if he wrote this song based on that one line from George Washington in History Has It's Eyes on You. Which song did he write first, or did he write them around the same time? I get chills whenever I hear it, because I know it's the only moment in the show that musically foretells the final song. And when Chris Jackson sings "She tells my story" in the middle of this song, that adds a whole other layer of emotion, especially with his delivery of the line. Miranda is a genius
Another great reaction! I think the Hamiltons actually had many children. There is a reference to this in “It’s quiet uptown” about taking the children to church on Sunday. Lin focused mainly on Phillip in this play (musical - haha now I’m doing it too). Also, when Phillip is doing his childhood rap he says he has a little sister but he wants a little brother.
Fun fact: That cool lyric by Madison was actually a paraphrasing of something Ron Chernow said to Lin. Chernow pointed to it as an example of how open and receptive Lin was to his input, which I think is just so cool. Edit: I also found myself not wanting it to end. I think for me, I got choked up because this song brought the realization that all these characters we'd grown to love in 2 hours and 40 mins were leaving us, and that the real people had already long since passed. "The orphanage" doesn't get me, but when she says Angelica is "buried in Trinity Church near you"--😭
I've recently fallen in love with the Hamilton musical. (A little late considering I'm a theatre kid) and I found out I'm related to one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. (William Floyd) so cool to know about the history of his time.
Alexander and Eliza had 8 children. Phillip died and they named another kid Phillip after him. I read somewhere that they also kinda adopted a little girl called Fanny.
In fact Eliza lost, two children (if I'm not wrong), Hamilton, Angelica, her father, her mother and her sister Peggy and maybe more people because her family is bigger than shown in the music, but she still doing everything to tell their stories.
Trinity Church, where the Hamiltons are buried, is in the shadow of the World Trade Center. On 9/11, lots of people sheltered in the church from the falling debris. The album leaves off the last bit of the show. Alexander takes Eliza to the front of the stage to show her the audience, and she gasps. Lin has never explained what that gasp means, but people have interpreted it as Eliza seeing Alexander's story being told to a modern day audience.
You should react to the original cast performing Helpless over zoom on Jimmy Fallon from a few months ago. Just the vocal talent alone is amazing. Thanks for doing this series!!
I just found your videos recently and binged all of your Hamilton reactions haha and I was wondering, what was your favourite songs (top 3?) from the musical?
When you watch this, watch carefully. When she speaks about slavery, Washington bows his head in shame. At the end Lin is basically telling Eliza he is telling her story with one look. I suppose that is why it is called Hamilton. He is telling both their stories.
How did I not notice that the last time Eliza says "time" the instrumentals stop (just the chorus continues). Could it also mean the end of her "time"?
Philip died and the daughter that is mentioned in the play Angelica, went crazy after losing her brother Philip, she never recovered. Eliza was actually pregnant when Philip died and they named that baby Philip in honor of their first born. They had 8 kids total. I really hope you can react to live performance next and then dive into the full play 🙏🏻
@@paulmarsden7714 eliza and Alexander's oldest daughter was called Angelica. And in the play they only mentioned that they also had a daughter after Philip.
Yeah, she lost two children, even though only one died. Philip's younger sister, Angelica Hamilton, had a mental breakdown after Philip's death and had to be given into the care of a doctor for the rest of her life. She might not have died, but sadly she was lost to her family.
And yeah, Eliza held on to a really formidable age in those times. She died at the age of 97. The lady lived so long that she was a contemporary of Washington, but also saw the rise of a young senator from Illinois named Abraham Lincoln.
I think you missed out on an opportunity to talk about how this musical has been at times complex and intricate and details, but it finishes in unison and a capella, which feels so simple for this blockbuster show, but really makes it all the more powerful. If you're looking for suggestions for other musicals to react to, I'd recommend Come From Away. It is also based on a true story (the grounded planes during the 9/11 attacks), and has a lot of songs that don't necessarily fall into the category of classic musical theatre. It's a Canadian show and takes lots of influence from Newfoundland culture and folk songs. Even if you don't want to react to it, maybe just look into it on your own it's a beautiful, powerful show which tells a story you may not know about.
Another fun fact is that in the show. Everyone is wearing white. Only Burr, Eliza, Angelica and Alexander are wearing colors because they are the answers to the questions. Who lives? Aaron Burr survived the duel. Who dies ? Alexander dies in the duel. Who tells our story? Eliza and Angelica continues tell Alexander’s Hamilton story, and Eliza tells the story of George Washington and the rest of soldiers. Overall the scene in the show is very emotional and I cry every-time I watch it.
Eliza truly was a ride or die for her man. Even after bro did her about as dirty as you can be done with the cheating and reynolds pamphlet fiasco, she dedicated tons of time making sure Alexander's writings were kept for the histories and made sure all of Alexanders political rivals didnt wash his name and accomplishments for certain things. The biggest example being his rivals tried to claim Madison was the sole writer of Washingtons farewell address to the public after he passed, and she took the issue all the way to Congress and found some rough drafts of alexanders and brought it to them to settle the debate, Madison wrote it after washingtons first term but Hamilton and Jefferson talked him into a 2nd term, and then when he went to resign after his 2nd he had Hamilton heavily revise and rewrite significant parts of the speech.
You should do SIX the musical. Very different to Hamilton but is another historical musical (Based of Henry VIII six wives). I would love to hear a breakdown of that music, it's super fun.

Yeah 😢 most of them in the past would gather what they wanted told when they were gone and destroy what they didn’t. Trying to shape their stories told when they are gone.
By the end of Jefferson’s 2nd term, it was clear that the US was heading towards the War of 1812 with England. James Madison was a less domineering man in stature, hadn’t served in the Revolution. Had he been alive, there’s a decent chance Hamilton, the war hero, would have been elected President especially since Washington was deceased at this point. If you’re thinking about the two term limit, that was the precedent Washington set but there was no law about it until after FDR. Had he been alive and had they asked, he might have served again, for the sake of directing US troops during the war.

Also, when Phillip is doing his childhood rap he says he has a little sister but he wants a little brother.
oh true! and thank you!
"The orphanage" doesn't get me, but when she says Angelica is "buried in Trinity Church near you"--😭
OMG I NEED THAT SHIRT! 😂
cant wait for the full musical reaction!!
haha thanks!

Fun fact the musical is named Hamilton because Eliza was just as important as Alexander was in history and she is also a Hamilton :)
Can't wait to see what else you put out, Hamilton and otherwise. Love your content!
than you Danielle!
I've recently fallen in love with the Hamilton musical. (A little late considering I'm a theatre kid) and I found out I'm related to one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. (William Floyd) so cool to know about the history of his time.
Woah!
IM GONNA CRY AGAIN BYE
Alexander and Eliza had 8 children. Phillip died and they named another kid Phillip after him. I read somewhere that they also kinda adopted a little girl called Fanny.
oh cool!
In fact Eliza lost, two children (if I'm not wrong), Hamilton, Angelica, her father, her mother and her sister Peggy and maybe more people because her family is bigger than shown in the music, but she still doing everything to tell their stories.
Amazing
Trinity Church, where the Hamiltons are buried, is in the shadow of the World Trade Center. On 9/11, lots of people sheltered in the church from the falling debris.
The album leaves off the last bit of the show. Alexander takes Eliza to the front of the stage to show her the audience, and she gasps. Lin has never explained what that gasp means, but people have interpreted it as Eliza seeing Alexander's story being told to a modern day audience.
wow!
You should react to the original cast performing Helpless over zoom on Jimmy Fallon from a few months ago. Just the vocal talent alone is amazing. Thanks for doing this series!!
cool thanks!! my pleasure!
I just found your videos recently and binged all of your Hamilton reactions haha and I was wondering, what was your favourite songs (top 3?) from the musical?
Jacob commenting on Its Quite Uptown: This song is stinkin sad!
How Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story: Hold my beer.
When you watch this, watch carefully. When she speaks about slavery, Washington bows his head in shame. At the end Lin is basically telling Eliza he is telling her story with one look. I suppose that is why it is called Hamilton. He is telling both their stories.
She also lost her sister Peggy before Phillip
I love this songggg🥰
it's a good one!
How did I not notice that the last time Eliza says "time" the instrumentals stop (just the chorus continues). Could it also mean the end of her "time"?
Dude you pause at the worst times.🤣🤣 Loved watching
My bad
Philip died and the daughter that is mentioned in the play Angelica, went crazy after losing her brother Philip, she never recovered. Eliza was actually pregnant when Philip died and they named that baby Philip in honor of their first born. They had 8 kids total.
I really hope you can react to live performance next and then dive into the full play 🙏🏻
the angelica in the play is Eliza's sister
@@paulmarsden7714 eliza and Alexander's oldest daughter was called Angelica. And in the play they only mentioned that they also had a daughter after Philip.
The really moving part about her opening an orphanage is Hamilton was orphaned.
Yeah for real!
You should check out In The Heights next. Another Lin musical a lot more hip hop with a spanish latin feel. Also won best musical. Lin for the win!!!!
Cool thanks!
You should react to In the Heights! It's another musical by Lin, but the type of music is totally different
a lot of requests for that! maybe I will!
Woohoo! I've enjoyed all 46 videos lol. Will you let us know when the full Hamilton reaction is up on patron?
yes! and I plan to do it in the next 2 weeks
@@JacobRestituto sweet.....I look forward to it!
You should also react to "In the heights" which is another Lin Manuel Miranda show.
Hell, yeah. With the added benefit that the movie will be released... at some point...
@@marcoscarrasco92 I feel so cheated that we didn't get to see it this year!
you could listen to the scrapped songs etc for hamilton
good idea
Cool thanks!
You should react to "Congratulations" ❤️ it's a song written by Lin to Hamilton but never appeared in musical and it's awesome 🥰
🙏🏼
Thank you for your insights! Enjoy the whole thing.... be carefull not to get addicted 😉
lol!
Hi!! Love your reactions, you're awesome!! can you please react to the full HADESTOWN BROADWAY CAST RECORDING?? Or IN THE HEIGHTS... I think you will also enjoy!! We sure will ☺️... Greetings from Mexico!! 🇲🇽
she also lost her sister peggy
I think the next song you should listen to is ten things one thing - Hamilton I think you will like it
cool thank you
You should check out "A Winters Ball/helpless" V "Satisfied" video....LMM is sheer genius, both videos are filmed in the exact same sequence but in opposite ways to each other, I just cant with Miranda's brain!!!!
Cool!
@@JacobRestituto pretty sure Tommy and Andy (choreography) get credit for the staging
Hes amazing! Love your reactions! If you want another (much shorter story) check out 21 chump st. It accomplishes in about 20 minutes what years of the D.A.R.E campaign couldn't 😆
I know you have the video for Hamilton to watch, but if you are interested in another musical, you might enjoy Hadestown. It has a jazzy, New Orleans style soundtrack which operates as almost a character.
Cool thanks!
You have to feel bad for Eliza though, she lost her mother, son, sister, and husband within the span of a few years
Absolutely!
I love these Hamilton reactions man, so sad to see them go. :(
If you're a fan of Lin-Manuel's work, you should for sure check out In The Heights! It's about life in Washington Heights🗽
oh cool!
Yeah 😢 most of them in the past would gather what they wanted told when they were gone and destroy what they didn’t. Trying to shape their stories told when they are gone.
Oh wow
Do the mixtape
I plan to do some here and the rest on Patreon!
You have to do the delete songs
I will!
Eliza - MVP
truth
By the end of Jefferson’s 2nd term, it was clear that the US was heading towards the War of 1812 with England. James Madison was a less domineering man in stature, hadn’t served in the Revolution. Had he been alive, there’s a decent chance Hamilton, the war hero, would have been elected President especially since Washington was deceased at this point. If you’re thinking about the two term limit, that was the precedent Washington set but there was no law about it until after FDR. Had he been alive and had they asked, he might have served again, for the sake of directing US troops during the war.
Interesting!!
The actual end to the show is not on the soundtrack
Oh interesting
Yep. There are three things not in the cast recording - you have to watch to hear/see them. IMO really smart choices.
i think eliza lost her son, husband, mother, and sister (Peggy) within the span of a few years
woah
Jacob, when will you be reacting to VoicePlay? Please check them out!🥺
I’ll try and look
