    Watching this, it suddenly struck me: If you had not been an artist, you would have been a heck of an engineer. You have a talent for tools as well as design!

      Hi llanitedave. Hahaha, I wish, but Im afraid I could never do the math it would take to be an engineer. With clay you dont have to be as exacting so I think clay was my calling, but I appreciate your thoughts. My Dad was an engineer and my son is an engineer so maybe I have some inkling of an engineer in me somewhere.

    I just started rewatching (because I love your work) and was reminded of a question for you:
    Butterfly basket, start bowl: Sometimes you use forms to pre-bend a slab piece that's being used in a project, giving the clay time to adjust. Sometimes you don't. What criteria do you use to choose?
    Star bowl: I'm curious about why you chose to make the star bowl from one slab instead of individual pieces. What factor(s) did you consider? Or perhaps it was a dare! 😊 Regardless, what a delightful piece. I could see a lid in its future!
    I hope you make a video about: Hand built, 3D pumpkins (with a lid)
    Happy Labor Day!

    • @annruel1982
      @annruel1982 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Shannon. thanks so much for watching. Jim and I really appreciate that. As far as when I prebend a slab---clay has a memory. When it is rolled flat and then bent, the clay will want to reflatten when the clay is fired. It usually happens at the seam most noticeably so when I am making something really round like a mug or cylinder, I like to prebend the clay to try and give it a new memory of being round in hopes it will keep the round shape once fired. Im not as worried about this shape as the joints are connected to a flat piece. the clay may try to flatten back out but that is alright in this case........As far as the star bowl goes, I could choose to make a star bowl with a lot of pieces, but the. more joints you have on a piece, the more vulnerable it is to cracking and coming unconnected and the harder it is to keep each piece straight. I still had to reinforce all my clay corners, but I wasnt as worried about the piece splitting anywhere......thanks for the idea about the pumpkins. I will definitely give that a think. There are a lot of videos out there with people making them (also lids are not my favorites, haha). Take care Shannon and happy potting.

    Ann, another good video, I don't do much handbuilding but if I had to do one, it would be the star, it's a lovely shape and the extra work needed to reinforce the points in and out makes it a beautiful shape. The 'C' word, which I can't say before November, even that is too early, would make a lovely treat box using sweets or a small gift inside. Your decoration, which is very simple for you, stands out perfectly, I like that you mark a line top and bottom keeps it contained. Thankyou for another good video.🎉😊

    Love all those!! and will try the butterfly shaped bowl first. It's a shame we can't get your type of tar paper in the UK. Several friends as well as myself have tried diferent roofing felt and none are the same as inthe US. I'l just have to try different materials to create the template for the star dish.

    • @annruel1982
      @annruel1982 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Cariad. Thanks so much for watching. Im sorry you cant get the roofing felt. I am trying to think of another material to use....maybe some sort of flexible thin but just rigid enough plastic. That might be something you could fold and it would keep the rigidity but would not rip when folded. I would take a look in the craft stores or hardware stores for something like that.... plastic that you might make your own templates with or plastic table placemats or maybe even plastic signs (private property, open house etc), that you would get at the hardware store or something along those lines?? Would plastic corregated sheets work?

      Hi Mudmagic. Thanks so much. Actually, what I did to draw those butterflies was--I took a piece of paper and folded it in half, then I just drew half of the butterfly shape where the body is against the fold and the wings flow out from the center(butterflies come in all sorts of shapes so you really cant go wrong). I then cut the butterfly out and traced it on the piece, then just painted it with underglazes. Give that a try.

    Thanks for sharing these ideas and templates! I’ll be adding that stiff foam to my tool inventory, it looks easy to shape. Do you apply UG on greenware? How long do you think an inexperienced person would take to build the butterfly basket?

    • @annruel1982
      @annruel1982 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Dlevy. You are very welcome. Yes, I use the foamular a lot for different things. It is easy to cut. As far as the underglaze goes, I do paint on greenware as I find it to be a lot more forgiving when I mess up. I can just sponge it off cleanly. As far as how long it takes to build a butterfly basket, it just all depends on how you work. The part that took the longest was waiting for the two side pieces to dry a bit and stiffen up. Once I got going it didnt take a lot of time, but I do like to spend some time and really make my sides straight and my seams nice and tidy etc. I am a bit of a perfectionist about that sort of thing. Give it a go and make a couple of them so you can gain the experience. 🙂
