    Hello Jake, I have a antique 1958 Winco Generator Briggs model 23A unit. Found at yard sale that was bought new with supposedly fifty or so hours on the unit. Lived in basement for backup power. Paid seventy five dollar for the genset. Runs like new old stock. Hope to find a larger one with a two cylinder Wisconsin engine.

    As annoying as the belt must be, I do like the way it can do a "gear" ratio so the engine doesn't have to run at 3600 (I'm sure my neighbors would appreciate it as well). Do you have frequency (Hz) on that multimeter? You probably already know this but 60Hz would be 3600 RPM normally (62.5 no load on these generators) but you got a belt ratio there.

  • @ericcorse

    I used to sell/service/rent Winco Generators back in the 1980's, these sure were durable and dependable gen sets ( as long as the engine was kept in top running condition.)
    I'm curious , what is the rated RPM of the generator?
    We often did an upgrade to these , we changed out the pulleys to double sheave 'B' section v-belts to ensure steady hertz and voltage.
    1800 RPM sets were the most stable, we found, of course the 1800 RPM generators demanded a much larger HP engine.
    I've often regretted that I did not hold on to one of these Winco Generators for myself, oh well, I do enjoy watching you work on this to bring it back to life.

    • @5Tractorguy
      @5Tractorguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They seemed like a pretty popular brand back in the day. Even searching around for old generators for sale, Wincos turn up quite a bit... new and old... Generator head is rated at 3600. Got an old Onan gen set here too that runs at 1800, nice quiet, even power!

    • @regsparkes6507
      @regsparkes6507 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@5Tractorguy When we sized up a generator set for some of our customers who wanted a belt driven set, we used the old axiom of " for every 1000 watts you must use
      ( at least ) 2 HP at the prime mover ( engine ) , if the Winco you have there is a 2,000 watt output, then that would mean a 4HP engine should suffice,..in theory. But if you want a smooth and 'clean' flow of power then add more HP at the prime mover, but also, make sure you have a powerful and well tuned prime mover. When Winco made these belt driven sets, they went a bit over on the HP of the PM ( engine) to ensure this good stable electrical power. Thumbs up for good ol' Wincos!

    Nice Find Jake! That's a really neat little unit! Nice and Compact! Is this a 1800 RPM unit or is it something weird like 2200? Kinda hard to tell lol. Either way it definitely is a hell of a lot nicer to listen to than a modern 3600 rpm screamer!! I'm actually working on a very similar unit for a friend right now! I think you really need to get a multimeter that measures more stuff or maybe a Kill-a-Watt meter if you are going to be messing with generators because the voltage that it's outputting doesn't really mean squat if the frequency of the electricity is way off lol. From all the messing around I have done with my Wisconsin powered Little Red Devil Light Plant I've found that having the frequency set around 60 Hz is most important, even if the generator is outputting a bit high. Cheaper generators like these will tend to output a bit on the high side voltage wise unloaded and droop a bit underload. I know you have a lot going on, but it sure would be neat to see you go through this engine and do a rebuild on it. Would make for a really cool little video series (or maybe even a time lapse) and a really nice running gen set! Looking forward to seeing that Kohler Light plant too! : )

    • @5Tractorguy
      @5Tractorguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say around the 2200 range. Gen head is rated for 3600 and with the pulley ratio, engine has to be in the mid 2000's range somewhere. Yeah, I gotta get me some more intricate multi meters some day. I actually have a few old school ones here with more settings than you can shake a stick at, but I need to figure out how to use them lol. Rebuild would be cool! But, the projects list says otherwise!
