- Wait, what? Get RED Spheres? This does not compute! I thought we had to get blue spheres? That's right, in this Sonic ROM hack, created by Cinossu, if you choose to be Knuckles, you have to obtain the red spheres instead! And trust me, it gets intense!

As a kid, i thought Knuckles had to collect the red spheres, now my dream became true
I never understood why it wasn't like that in the first place :)

I did too.
For me, when I was a Kid, The Red Spheres in Sonic 3 Special Stage were Blue but were turned into Red beacuse of Knuckles before Sonic (& Tails) could enter the special stage.

I remember back in school in the 1990s and a friend was saying about the blues and reds being reversed and having to collect the red spheres.
20-25 years later; here we are. "GET RED SPHERES"
Now I really want to see a vs mode where Sonic collects blues and Knuckles collects reds on the same map!

Y'know, looking back on this, this makes a ton of sense. Knuckles was meant to be the "hard mode" for the game, which you can tell via his level layouts, lower jumping, and other things.
This hack makes the special stages way harder as I can see, so it would actually make sense if this was added.
Hey there. The slow down is caused by additional checking for the condition to transform the blue, now red, spheres into rings. There isn't a hardcode for how spheres are turned into rings, instead, the game loops through the array of the spheres object, each time you collect a sphere, and then, check if it had spheres on it's adjacent position, and check witch side of the adjacent sphere there is a collected sphere. Hard to explain, but, TLDR, the game checks if there is a border of the collected spheres on all of the spheres near to it. This is happening because, the way the red spheres are positioned, and the spheres adjacent to it, isn't designed to be transformed on rings. So, the elligible patterns to create rings are much bigger, and, each sphere increases exponentially the aumont of checks done on the frame you collect them.
You can clearly see that there is, indeed, an array iterating because you can transform into rings, small borders inside of a bigger group of spheres. If it was hardcoded, it would only transform into rings when collecting the border spheres while not collecting the inner spheres.

I was so confused as a kid playing the sonic 3 special stages as a young kid. When playing as sonic you get the blue spheres, so I thought I thought you get the red ones as knuckles. Had no idea at all what I was doing wrong. Good times.

For newcomers who might not understand the backstory of this ROM hack: According to Cinossu, during the Blue Sphere "Speedrun" Charity Marathon that was held by Werster, Trihex, Chuck Johnson of DarkspinesSonic, and SuperAliceinWonderland, somebody in the comments had posed the long~asked question about what would happen if Knux had to get the Red Spheres; as a result of this, Cinossu ended up making this "quick" hack, and the rest explains itself, our questions have finally been (mostly) answered.
Like virtually any ROM hack, Red Sphere (or Get Blue Spheres?, as it was originally called) does have some technical flaws that have been long waited to become optimized:
~ The Lag Frames (in this case, the freezing) that happens on native hardware, Gens Rerecording, Kega Fusion, and Genesis Plus GX is currently only (somewhat) averted when you are playing this title on Regen, specifically its Debugger variant; you will need to make use of the feature that allows you to Overclock the Motorola 68000 and it will help to some degree, though your mileage may vary, depending on the value you have it set to (6000 Cycles per Line might be satisfactory for a while).
~ There is the occurrence of obtaining too many Red Spheres in a Wrap or Box, especially if it covers a massive lot of the map: As shown in highlights from almost four years ago, collecting too many in a certain region will trigger an Automatic Win for the level once it breaks up into Rings, which to my knowledge, is the most common bug that you'll come across in the more Red Heavy levels, which is why it's recommended to go for clearing smaller blocks of Red instead of bigger.
~ As some of you may know, there are also a few Blue Sphere Only levels spaced out throughout the game, of which have absolutely no Red Spheres and thus those are impossible to complete as Knuckles; you will either need to complete those as Sonic or skip the levels outright by using one of the Twelve Digit Passcodes (or a savestate) to jump to a different one.

looks like the algorithm that converts into rings is getting a bit bogged down and causing the momentary lock ups when getting reds. could do with running on a very overclocked system.
If you collect 8 blue spheres and 1 in middle that doesn't collect them and all 9 of them turned to rings
now get orange spheres for tails
