I own both an F87 BMW M2 and a G87 BMW M2. Here are my thoughts on which is best and why.

Driven both but the F87 is the M car for the purist. The G87 does a good job as an everyday driver and feels more Audi-esque

The only review I can trust with no reason for bias. Fascinating. Sat in one today again. Feels good, looks good. But not anywhere close to being worth 3 times as much as an F87 imo 👍

The new m2 probably is the better daily especially if specced with the zf8 auto box, but I feel like the whole point of the m2 is to be fun and an experience not something that you’d go do your errands in. Good video and I agree a lot with what you said, the new m2 is alot more like the m4 than the previous gen m2.

Its bound to be its got the same gearbox now, bags more power and its even larger now. The downside for me is that they are heavier, Go through the brakes alot faster and will be alot more in maintainance costs simply because they will chew through tyres and pads, discs and bushes quicker. From what I remember it was one of the reasons why they didnt use one as a ring taxi because of the additional costs to do it were huge. The g series m3 they had was eating pads and tyres at an alarming rate and I believe the discs are very expensive to replace when compared to the previous Gens. The older one has more potentential when it comes down to being a track toy simply because of the size and weight advantage, it has from stock and the parts are cheaper. Deep pockets to have one of these new ones.

I had a 20 M2 6MT and currently a 23 M2 6MT both cars I track often. Reason why I switched to the G87 M2 is because it really is faster on the track than the F87. The G87 can carry more speed through corners but what sets them apart is the 10 step traction control on the G87.. you can really dial in how much slip you want from the car.. this equals to more consistent and faster lap times. The G87 however does feel dull compared to the F87 when you are just driving around town. The F87 feels more lively with its rear end more willing to step out. If all I wanted was a fun daily to drive up the back roads, I would have just stuck with my F87 M2 but since I often do track days the G87 M2 better suits me.

I Had the same feeling (a better daily than my F87 CS) but it’s a different car. I was surprised by its size and on downhill especially you can really feel the extra weight. I liked the car BTW. It’s the BMW M I would buy in today’s BMW lineup but I won’t sell my CS for a G87. I have to say I daily a M135i F40 so I use my CS for weekend essentially 👍

I see what he means. I also have both (in manual), and the G87 is really put together. When driving with all the safety tech off, it feels more like the fun we all love in the F87, but more adult somehow. I love both of them, and intend to keep both for many years. Honestly, they are both amazing cars, even more so when you consider the segment they are in.

What I love about my F87 OG M2 is the fact it reminds me of what true BMW M cars of old were like. When BMW M cars were raw and super engaging. I’m not saying the new M cars aren’t good, they are definitely more capable of course, but they certainly aren’t as emotional and characterful. All down to personal opinion and what motoring means to you I guess

Jackie Ding is showing what the new G87 M2 can do on the track. I plan to sell my stock 2016 Genesis Coupe 3.8 and buy an M240i xDrive someday after I have enough money. If I were super rich, I would go with the G87 M2. Add better wheels that are not entirely all black, add a darwinpro or ducktail style spoiler wing, and the car will be much better. The S58 engine is phenomenal. Add a few basic parts and get it tuned on 93 or E85, and it will the best street/track car. People are really sleep on these cars because of appearances. Part of the problem is companies using black wheels for stock sports cars. That trend needs to stop.

I have the new G87 M2. I also have an 2020 F90 M5. While I cannot compare it with the F87 M2, I can compare it with the M5 from a "how does it make you feel while driving" perspective. The G87 comes a close second IMO. The G87 is a fantastic car and would recommend to anyone to consider it as a daily driver. BTW, I also owned a F80 M3. It's so much better than the F80.

The bottom center piece on the carbon seats is a problem.. doesn't matter if you are tall or short(I'm 5'11). I was going to spec my M2 with the carbon seats but after driving my friends M2 with the carbon seats at the track, when shifting gears the center piece does rub my leg slightly but is more apparent when you do any left foot braking it becomes very bothersome. The carbon seats looks very nice but it is better suited for the automatic M2.

I always wonder when people say “it is less emotional, the previous is more rough, real M car,…”. I would suggest to try the new M2 and turn all the controls off, you will s**t in your pants! So really no point on these statements. Congrats for the car! 💥🎉 I am super happy with mine.

I've driven the G87 without the controls on and whilst there is a bit more involvement, it is no where as raw as the F87. In fact, the difference is astounding in terms of actual steering feel and sound. The G87 is supremely refined. However if performance is what one is after, the G87 remains unmatched and the most capable. Just not for me.

Fun video mate but will add couple of things.
First F87 weight by aus site says 1550kg.
    G87 weight is 1700kg.
    Both manual weight.
    That's 150kg not 350kg.

Nice review. I spent a long weekend in the manual and for me it spoiled it. I agree with the Top Gear review that the operation of the clutch means that you sit further forward than your normal position. I’m happy I plumped for an auto in Brooklyn grey with a carbon rear spoiler and roof fin, plus the dealer fit upgrade M Performance alloys in gold. I’ve just sold my 600LT Spider and I’ll use it on track as well, whilst I decide what I’m buying to replace my McLaren. Most tests say that the 718 GT4 is a better car, and it probably is, but as a 718 Spyder owner I know that the Porsche is at least £20k more new if you try and have a similar spec to the standard new M2. It is pretty good value for money for the performance on offer and I suspect lap times will be very similar to a GT4.

What an odd coincidence to come across this comment. I just picked up my M2 today and sold my Fistral Blue 600lt spyder last week. Black manual M2 with the track package for me. I had a manual F87 M2C and the pedal position in this car doesn't feel any different to me, even with the carbon buckets. Blown away with the power in the M2. Feels as capable as the 600 in some ways. Definitely has more mechanical grip. Missing all the feedback of course.

For all the reviewer that claimed the G87 felt slow or not very quick, they’ve suspected it was the weight. But actually I’ve noticed all of these reviewers tested the manual gearbox version. It was actually the manual gearbox that is a wrong match with the G87. The old outdated 6 speed made the car slow. The automatic in really life is a second quicker in every category. The manual is the Achilles heel of the new M2

    • @brelaxed13
      @brelaxed13 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I don't disagree with this. I own the G87 in the manual. It certainly feels quick when you are in the power band. I have learned to basically be there at all times. While it is slower and the transmission itself isn't the best on the market, it is still a manual and I really enjoy driving it every day. Over 10k miles.

Would love a new G87 M2, sadly out of my price range.
But saying that, I think I'd find it too 'modern', too comfortable, too easy to drive.

Agree with much of what you say but .... As has already been said your numbers on the weight difference are much too high. The quoted power is slightly lower than you quoted, 453 bhp/460 hp. One point you missed - I don't think you can have tried to get into the back because the F87 is comfortable for adults in the back but the G87 is not, due to much reduced headroom. I am disappointed that the new car no longer has the eight multi-purpose shortcut buttons, or buttons for the heated seats. I think all UK cars have the HUD. Interested that you think the F87 is a better track car - my F87 M2 Comp has been ruined for me as a track car by going through a set of brake disks each time I have tried. Last lot were Alcon fitted by Lichfield, now on EBC but I have not taken it on track since these were fitted cause it was getting too expensive. I am getting a G87 to replace my F87 - both manual, getting standard seats and comfort pack.

Its not the OEMs fault but the governments.. OPF, Design regulations, emission regulations, safety regulations, ice prohibition etc. Granted, a lot of the rules are important to be safer on the roads but still, cars are getting worse by the day due to the limiting factors every oem has to face. I had a drive of one on very challenging roads up in Northumberland and it was a bit of a disaster to be fair. It ran out of ideas pretty quickly, then the pads overheated. The F87 wasn’t perfect here on standard suspension either though fitting the M performance coilovers sorted this completely. However it’s a bit more grown up. A sports car it is not.
