The thing is, he doesn't need the artist's permission to do any of his songs. They're all protected under parody law and always have been. He only "gets their permission" on principle alone to make sure nobody feels uncomfortable, none of that is legally required of him. Him giving Michael Jackson co-writer credit is also purely his choice as a friendly gesture and not at all necessary. Al is just a really, really sweet guy.

I heard somewhere that the titles of songs, books, movies etc, had no copyrights and could be used freely, never knew about a parody law. Interesting.
So he could have parodied "Live and Let Die" with absolutely no legal repercussions but didn't because it would have upset Paul McCartney? That is a sweet guy.

I am also a great fan of his seguing from one song into another--a past-time I like as well: taking note at what point in one song does it begin to sound like another, and chaining these together.

Funny story about Michael Jackson... My mom is a HUGE Stephen King fan. About two years ago, she got the chance to not only meet him, but have a conversation with him and he told her a great story about Michael. Apparently, Michael wanted to consult Stephen on his music video, "Thriller," and tried calling him. Stephen had gone out, so his wife, Tabitha, answered the phone. Stephen doesn't believe in cell phones - hence his book, now a movie, "Cell" - so he always leaves a number he can be reached at with Tabitha. So, of course, she gave Michael the number Stephen could be reached at and they got off the phone.
About ten minutes later, Tabitha gets another call from Michael, only this time he's crying. When she asked him what was wrong, he explained, while still sobbing, that he hadn't had a pen or paper when she gave him the number, so he'd written it in his carpet, but the carpet had sprung back up and he couldn't read it

Oops, the correct statistic is that he is one of 5 (I think) artists who have had a top 40 hit in each decade since the 80s. MJ, Madonna, U2, and Kenny G. That's 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s. Let's see if any of them can do it in to 20s.

Weird Al's highest position in the US Billboard charts was number 9 with 2006's "White And Nerdy".

@@Stjurgeon That's right and it's his only single that went platinum. And his highest album chart was #1 in the US Billboard 200, the first comedy album to hit #1since 1963. And the first comedy album to debut at #1, won a Grammy, too. His Hamilton Polka, 2018, was the first polka on the Billboard Digital sales chart at #23. It also debuted #1 on the Comedy Songs chart.

@@mustangdebbie56 Would be tough for MJ unless, like Prince, he has a lot of unreleased stuff that is actually good. But given how much money owed Sony when he died, and how much Sony tries to make money from his library, and I doubt it.

+sturmtheest The big irony here is that Weird Al is vegan too, but in his more liberal denomination of veganism, it's all right to make fun of meat dishes.

My generation grew up discovering Weird Al through “White & Nerdy” in the mid-2000’s. I’m happy that Yankovich continued to remain in people’s minds past numerous eras 🔥

Al is vegetarian too, they should have done it and given the profits to animal rights organizations.

      The Vegan An-com
He doesn't claim to be and admits to eating non vegan foods. Or in your mind is it ok for vegans to eat cheese pizza once in a while?

BigSirZebras Vegetarian and vegan both start with "v"s, but they are different words. Vegetarians do consume animal products but not the actual animal.
