    What do you do when you meet the vehicle opposite direction?

    • @exploresouthwest
      @exploresouthwest  6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Pray to god.
      Actually that's a great question with an actual answer. When 2 vehicles can't pass, the uphill vehicle has the right of way. So the guy coming down would have had to back up to a point where we could pass.
      Although I've been in situations where I had just passed a good pull out point so I backed down a hill a little bit then waved the other guy down.

      @@exploresouthwest I have a friend who was on a narrow road in the Wind River Range of NW Wyoming, he was over as far as he could get on the outside and the vehicle passing him, made his vehicle go over the edge and flipped landing upside down 20 feet down in a creek bed. Said he was trapped as his car doors would not open nor the windows, he hung upside down for 3 hours before someone else found him and helped him out.

    Years of exploring the West has taught me that if you see a lot of large diameter culverts, like the ones in this video, then the road you are traveling on used to be a main thoroughfare. And its always amazing how fast nature can reclaim something that doesn't get proper maintenance. From one that drives a 4x4 for a living I can definitely say that was some great off road driving!! Well done.

    I did this a couple years before this clip and can vouch for everything you just watched - and more! I was in my GMC pickup and agree it should be ATV only now. It is one of the best adventures you can go on if you can make it. Thanks again, and btw, it used to be well maintained before the new highway, we used it in the early 60’s to get to Halls Marina on the “new” Lake Powell!! All I can say is the dirt they hauled in to make it a road and then maintain it has been washed away making it the adventure it is today. 🏜

    Sweet video. Thanks. The rock art is cool , much like Australian Aboriginal paintings. At 15:55 you go through a fence. Probably drove bullock and horse driven wagons . My wife's family were early Australian settlers, one 10 year old boy relative got trapped and dragged under a bullock wagon and took a couple days to die..

    Thanks for the video. I've driven the length, between the highways, of Comb Ridge on both the east and west side and also across Cedar Mesa from west to east on the road that intersects the west Comb Ridge road. The road you took doesn't show on AAA maps but looks doable in my 2-door Wrangler Sport, i.e. short wheelbase, with 12 inches of ground clearance. An area I've wanted to explore more is the east Comb Ridge road. There are side trails that go up to the sloped east side of the ridge, which has some interesting geological features that can be seen from the main road and which I've also seen from the air in a Cessna overflight.

    Yes! WTG. Helluva fun drive and you nailed it. The part that always steams my goat, is all these folk wrapped in all kinds of technology assuring them, or should assure them they got nothing to sweat including their own recklessness... that back in the day folks were tooling around all these hills and deserts in Model T's and A's had high clearance, thick tread, skinny tires, 4 cyl. engines, and worst of all rear wheel drive. Vehicles nowadays... beyond the power plant and drive train have air bags and shoulder straps... whatever.

    Ok, I know have made an earlier comment, but gotta tell ya every time watch this video it is Ball's to the Wall Fun. For perspective there's a pass between Telluride and Ouray, called Bear Paws, Bear Claws, whatever it's there and the thousands of folk who Jeep that speak of it as though its as much of a challenge as Posey's Trail. In my vast history of car mountaineering will tell you, by comparison their stamina facing this trail! They would have all, given they made it that far, gotten out of their Jeeps and slashed their wrists at the culvert pipe and forced their passenger's to do the same. This video is the greatest vicarious fun have ever had. Seen another vid. where a four-wheeler goes down Posey's Trail and can tell right off he'd have reservations about going back up it. You Duh Man!

    Tried this road last month, March 2019, in our lifted Jeep. Only made it to about 6 minutes into your video. Larger rock in middle of road, too big to crawl the Jeep over. Looked like no maintenance yet from the winter road was nothing like your video lots of larger rocks and barely enough room to squeeze Jeep around it and edge. Would have loved to continue but had to make a 8 point turn around and go back down. Was getting late in day was going to go to hotel rock, but too late in afternoon. Great video.

    Misnomer on the title of this video. This was never called Posey's Trail. It was old Highway 95. Posey's trail actually was a foot trail up and over Comb Ridge in the same area, but was never meant for vehicle traffic.

    • @exploresouthwest
      @exploresouthwest  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's True, I should have put that this is Posey's Trail ROAD, as the original poesys trail was just a foot path, but the road got the nickname because it crosses the same area.

    • @jimbeard8947
      @jimbeard8947 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      janetwilcox is correct. This was the old highway and it crossed Comb Wash and continued up the other side. The real Posey trail is south of this old road, and the trail is still walkable. It's just north of where highway 95 curves and just east of where the campground is now. There's also a Posey Canyon which is north of this dugway and it's possible the Wetherills used Posey C back when they were doing exploration trips over here. They would go up on Milk Ranch Point (probably) then ride over and go down Lyman Canyon and onto Grand Gulch. Every expedition they made the renumbered "caves" they explored so when you read "Cowboys & Cave Dweller's" (Blackburn) for instance, you learn some of this. If you continue north and then east you'll find old pavement as it curves over to the Cottonwood Canyon county road and then back to UT-95. From the top of this dugway you can also see a section of prehistoric road down below, but you have to walk northwest to a good overlook to see it.That old roadway continues south to several other places of importance, including another pedestrian crossing back over Comb Ridge made prehistorically and called Jackson Crossing. Read Hurst and Till's chapter 4 in Cathy Cameron's book about the excavation of the Great House in Bluff for details on old roads.@@exploresouthwest

    You should go through an area like that with at least one other vehicle. That way if something happens you can work it out together or get out with the other vehicle.

    They still clear that road. Ive seen rocks on there after winter before. Ridden it Jeeps, dirt bikes, atv's and now Sxs's since late 80's. Its a good one. That area has a lot of great trails including the famous Hole in the Rock trail by Halls Crossing.

      kong3 we road this by accident when google took us this way as a shortcut to the butler wash ruins. Luckily we made it ... but I’ve been trying to find the story behind that rusty wrecked car on it’s side down the cliff.

    The Monkey Wrench Gang knew this area well !! Love this whole area. The vid is great too, I've watched it several times. On my map ( Delorme Atlas Gazetteer) it shows this as the Lower Butler Wash Road. Poseys trail doesn't show until North of 95. The two don't show as connecting up either ?

    This is the road. There is also a trail that is the actual route Posey would take on horseback to outwit the local law enforcement and to do it on foot it seems impossible to do on horseback. The man is a legend.
