I just came across your videos on TH-cam, and have started watching several of them. I was just in Edinburgh in April for about 10 days. I've been to Scotland four times now, since 2001. My last two trips were the longest, about two weeks. But, this last one was absolutely the best! It hurt my soul to leave, and once I got home I decided that I wanted to make the move. So, I've been doing as much online research, and finding videos of those that've made the move, to get as much help/recommendations/advice etc. that I can get. Unfortunately, most information that I've gathered hasn't been overly encouraging. As a US citizen living in San Diego, California, I understand the complexities of a person wanting to move and work in the United States that's not a citizen. I'm finding those difficulties are mirrored in the UK. With the ways the laws are set up regarding Work Visas, it makes it quite difficult to get one. But, I keep hoping, and researching, and getting thoughts and advice from others. I found your video on the struggles of finding a flat very informative. I'd been told by locals that can be a challenge, due to false advertisements and scammers. I was hoping to find out how you got work, but it seems you're a writer. That's awesome! I tried that a few years back. I wrote a few books and even had one published. But, unfortunately, I was never very successful. So, I moved on. I still write and do creative things, like drawing, for fun. I'll keep watching your videos, and hopefully get more tips that may help in my dream and endeavor, to move to Scotland. All my best!

Hey Norrin, what attracts you to Scotland? Four visits from the US is no small feat! I don't have any helpful advice for emigrating, unfortunately, since I inherited British citizenship through my mother. I can sympathise with the difficulty in trying to move to a new country where you're not a citizen though, because I once tried to move to NYC! Perhaps the answer for you will be found in your writing, if you pick it up again and then make it into your business/full-time role. What kind of writing do you do?

@@gabriellegweneth Thanks for your reply! It's true, trying to move to another country can be quite difficult. Governments and their laws don't make it easy. That's really cool that you have UK citizenship from your mother. I detect no accent (British), when listening to you. I'm a bit of a nerd, so I tend to write Sci-Fi/Fantasy type stories. Although, I once started a story about a woman living in San Diego that fled to Tijuana, Mexico, because she was a suspect in a murder. I never finished that one, though. But, I'm a big comic book superhero nerd, so I both write and draw in that genera. You can find some of my artwork on my Instagram by searching my name. I'm looking into a few possibilities in regard to work, if I'm allowed to make the move. Perhaps you're right,...maybe, I can use my writing or art skills to help in making the move. All my best! ☺️☺️☺️

So what did turn out to be your favourite Scottish book? If I may? And if not that's fine too.

Hi Paul! Aside from "Sunset Song," so far I've read:
      - "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine," Gail Honeyman
      - "His Bloody Project: Documents Relating to the Case of Roderick Macrae," Graeme Macrae Burnet
      - "Shuggie Bain," Douglas Stuart
That seems like a short list now that I've typed it out, but I've read a bunch of other UK authors in the past year as well; classics and contemporary, fiction and non. Anyway, of those 4 I'd say "Shuggie Bain" is my favourite. The Honeyman and Burnet books were really good too though!
Back in high school I found the last of Dorothy Dunnett's Lymond Chronicles in my grandmother's house, and I *loved* it. I've been wanting to read the whole series ever since. Then I came here and found out she was Scottish! So the Chronicles are now on my list to get to this year. What're your faves? Do you have any recommendations?

@@gabriellegweneth I was going to suggest Shuggie Bain, but of course you've read it haha. I like Val McDermid and Ian Rankin, they're both crime writers. And anything by Iain Banks, who passed away just a few years ago. 'The Wasp Factory' is very good.

@@PaulEcosse haha of course! Thanks for those recommendations; I'll check them out! Hope you're having a great summer. ^_^
