I've always appreciated the second chance we got with Castlevania Legacy of Darkness, it fixed many issues i had the first game, and it's a meaty content rich game, it's just a bummer that Konami didn't have the foresight giving the team the time to work on the title from the very start. I agree with the comments below, it's good to know that the #1 in N64 reviews is back. Today is a big day for the fan community, we have been waiting for this return for a while. And it's good to know you're okay, Glenn. Greetings from 🇦🇷
Cornell's wetewolf form has much higher defense and offense. He can also continue running while throwing his main weapon instead of having to stop. Unfortunately, once you turn into it you are stuck that way until you run out of gems (hearts, sub-weapon ammo). After defeating a boss or other enemies that caused you to use it in the first place you usually just stand around waiting for it to ware off as any gems you collect during it will just get wasted. It is invaluable during the final boss of Cornell's campaign though.
See I never really felt that, I assumed that would probably be the case if I read the manual or something but when playing I really couldn’t see much difference in combat at all.
@@n64glennplant Hey, I'm not defending the transformation for being all it could be or anything like that. I'm just saying there definitely are some advantages to using it. I always play through the game on the hardest setting and though it has been a number of years since the last time I definitely remember the final boss being much easier using the werewolf form over sub-weapons for those reasons. You can get away with throwing your main attack while sliding too in either form but I'm almost positive it effects the damage you do and damage you take. I really got to play through all of the characters campaigns again as I always did enjoy both this and Castlevania 64. I still own the actual cartridges and N64 too.:)

Always lovely to see a new N64 review from the King, himself! Dropped everything just to watch this with my family and friends and now quite a few of us are going to be revisiting this classic game that I would personally rank as my 3rd favourite Castlevania game, just behind Curse of Darkness and Symphony of the Night, but just above Rondo of Blood and Castlevania 64. So awesome to have back, Glenn! Funny enough I was just looking to see if you'd done a review on legacy of darkness recently to see you hadn't yet...until now! :D
Most excellent video Glenn! You made me want to go and buy it now :D I wish Castlevania went more in this direction, maybe a bit more of a 3D MetroidVania, as turning itself into a God of War clone really destroyed the franchise.
Welcome back Glenn, we missed you! You were a big inspiration for me to begin collecting and playing n64 games again after many years. I hope that you've been doing well.
Welcome back! Missed ya :) I have to say, tho, you got some things wrong in this. First, you can manipulate the camera with the d-pad as you see fit. Second, Cornell's beast form IS more powerful than his regular form. I would also recommend playing the japanese version, as it has Henry's quest unlocked from the start, rumble pack support and on-cartridge save^^ As for Gilles de Rais, he died in 1440, some 400 years before the game is set. Anyway, this is the real CV64 and there is no need to play the first CV64. It's a good game. Far from perfect, but pretty good.
Honestly I for one would be interested, & I get the feeling other fans would be too. Up to you though man, we are just happy you are back.@@n64glennplant
The original Castlevania for the N64 was (& remains) my favorite game on that platform. Legacy of Darkness is excellent, too, but I prefer the first game, despite all the additions & upgrades LoD received. However, there IS a good reason to replay Henry's campaign, however slight it may be. I was very thorough & found all the lost children on my first attempt, then decided to revisit the mission & save one less child on each playthrough, ultimately ignoring them all. Henry's response changes in his final bit of dialogue, depending on the number of children found. He gets a little more dejected each round, & his defeat upon zero rescues strikes me as both comical & heart-breaking, in its own way. Just a bit of silliness I found entertaining, especially as I too wish that Henry's chapter was a little longer, perhaps with some story setting up the character & his rise to knighthood. Great review overall, & I appreciate your fairly objective assessment!
It's unusual, considering their respective reputations then & now, but it's true. The original version of Castlevania 64 was the second N64 game I played (after Super Mario 64, naturally). And I hadn't wanted to play it, to be honest. It was my sister's purchase, & I was surprised how much I ultimately loved it. It WAS frustrating at times, but I had similar problems with other revered titles. That includes some of the platforming in Super Mario 64, as well as Banjo-Kazooie, which I put down for years before giving it another shot. I do love Ocarina of Time, by the way. The time & care that went into that game is superior to CV64 without question, & Ocarina is a far more involving experience overall. But I really connect with the design, music, characters, story & gameplay of CV64 whole heartedly. This game is dripping with atmosphere, & I would (strangely!) rather investigate its gloomy, gothic environments than the much more lush, varied lands of Ocarina. Anyway, your observations & suggestions here are all on point, & I enjoyed the background you provided on some of the story elements. Thanks once again for a great review! @@n64glennplant

Great review and welcome back, Glenn! It was a nice gift to see my favorite N64 game get reviewed today. This was one of those games I bought at launch back in Dec. 99 and have always enjoyed going back to it over the years - playing through it a number of times with all four characters/using alternate costumes. It definitely offers a lot for those able to stick with it and its atmosphere is topnotch!
No way!!! I was checking this week to see if your channel had any recent comments regarding the hiatus. Sorry to hear you have not been well, but glad to see another vid from you
Spot-on review! I rented Castlevania 64 and then got Legacy of Darkness after it was released. Those clips of that gold mine cart sequence gave me flashbacks because I died so many times in that section because of the stupid sudden camera shift for one of the jumps! I also loved hearing "Art Tower" during your comments on the Henry section; it's one of my favorite music tracks in the entire Castlevania series (along with "Stairway to the Clouds" from the end of the game). Overall, as an N64 owner, I enjoyed LoD quite a bit. Symphony was cool, but seeing Castlevania in 3D was cool, too!
I'm glad you are back! I definitely want to play this game, but since the Castlevania Netflix show the price has skyrocketed. I remember this game in bargain bins for 10 dollars. Now the price is ridiculous!
Wow I was not expecting a Glenn Plant N64 review to pop up in my feed but it’s a great sight to see! You haven’t skipped a beat- great review! Sending well wishes.
I actually love this game. Played the version known as 64 a lot with my father when I was young. The gameplay loop and the ambiance is really charming and I'm always looking for games with the same gameplay/vibe. Sadly, there's not enough of them.
Actually there is a reason to play Castlevania 64 as Legacy of Darkness still didn't quite contain the games full vision. Many of the returning locales in Legacy of Darkness are indeed new maps. They were clearly intended to be the same locales, but 8 years after Cornell's quest that should have used the maps out of the first one. The forest level in Legacy of Darkness has some of the same mauseliems as C64, but worn out and busted up. The level with the lava in LoD has the tower section from C64's version sunken into the lava. There are a few other examples as well. I don't doubt that editing all of this together is extremely time consuming but I think you should be a little more thorough when playing these two games. I noticed this pattern of same locales being damaged and worn out versions of C64 levels the very first time I played LoD.
@@n64glennplant Agreed. I always liked these games better then the Iga Castlevania games both 2D and 3D. They seem truer to what Castlevania is all about and the series would still be going strong if they had continued going down this route, ironing out all the kinks and flaws along the way. Once dominant Japanese companies like Konami tried there hand at fully 3D action platformers like Mario 64, realized how hard it actually is, and just gave up. It was incredibly shortsighted. Far too many games still rely on fixed cameras and levels that are basically a collection of simple, flat, combat arenas.
Wow, I was one of your first subs back like over 10years ago when you just started (I had another account back then). Just found your channel again, awesome to see how much you grown here on YT. alot of great material to go through!!
Hello Glenn, new subscriber here. I just want to thank you for such great videos. You've got me excited again for the N64. Your channel gives that 90s and early 2000 feel of reading a game magazine back in the day but as if I'm listening to them in audible. I hope I get the chance to be able to discuss in future videos. Keep up the great work.👍
Thank you Glenn, good to see you back again, loved the video :) I've always been a massive Castlevania fan since the Nes. When I first bought Castlevania 64 back when it released here in Australia, I absolutely loved it. To me even though it had its flaws, was awesome to see it in 3D and I got a sense of atmosphere and sometimes fright (garden maze stage had my heart racing). When I heard a 2nd version was coming out, I immediately jumped and pre ordered it at a local video game store. Even though this version succeeded in doing what CV64 was supposed to do, it never deterred me from enjoying both, as I found the subtle differences to still be enjoying when playing either version. I still love listening to the OST of CV64 at night to fall asleep to at times, and will fire up the 2 games every now and then.
I am joinging the Party People that are glad that you released a Video Glenn! I haven't played Legacy of Darkness, but in my Opinion Castlevania 64 is very enjoyable and has a very nice Atmosphere. Guess i have to throw that one into my Everdrive some Day, way to pricey. Edit: BTW doesn't Renon look like Jean Reno :P
I sometimes worry about channels not releasing videos in a while, and even though i haven't watched all the videos here, i truly missed a new video, so in this almost 2 years i did check from time to time, and i'm very glad you are back and that you recovered (from what i read in a reply), i had health problems this year but it was something short that comes back from time to time, and that sucks, but hopefully i will finish soon.

I loved the first release when it came out. Somehow ( being a gamer since the Master System) I had never played a Castlevania game till the 64 version. Might have had different feelings for Castlevania 64 had I played them. A funny thing actually happened last year. Having sold my collection years ago I decided to start a new one and when it came to Castlevania, I went for a cheap repo of Legacy of Darkness instead of the original version. Last year I was going through an old tote and on the very bottom was my original copy of Castlevania 64! It's the only game I now have from my original collection. That being said Legacy is definitely an improvement over the original but I actually remember being mad back in the 90s when I had heard it was coming out. I kinda felt like Konami had ripped me off, which is probably why I hadn't played Legacy of Darkness till recently. Thanks for all the years of amazing videos and I'm really enjoying the new content!

All these years later and he is still giving us glorious n64 content.
Can’t leave everyone with the job nearly complete now can I 😁
Wow I was not expecting a Glenn Plant N64 review to pop up in my feed but it’s a great sight to see! You haven’t skipped a beat- great review! Sending well wishes.
Wow, thanks! Appreciate that
I actually love this game. Played the version known as 64 a lot with my father when I was young. The gameplay loop and the ambiance is really charming and I'm always looking for games with the same gameplay/vibe. Sadly, there's not enough of them.
Yeah it seems it’s always zombies now rather than gothic style horror
Nightmare Creatures, Medievil, Nocturne (PC).
Glad you're back. Hope you're all well now!
Saved for later
Thanks and enjoy!
Glad to see you back Glenn! Amazing video as always. Will you be doing things like livestreams again?
That's the plan but I’ve been doing them more on twitch
Welcome back Glenn Plant! Always happy to see you again. Nobody on YT covers N64 games like you do my ol friend.
Glad you like them and more to come with a new project some point early next year too hopefully
I just wish they’d release a new like total remaster combining both the n64 titles
Thanks for subbing all this time…plenty more to come
Hello Glenn, new subscriber here. I just want to thank you for such great videos. You've got me excited again for the N64. Your channel gives that 90s and early 2000 feel of reading a game magazine back in the day but as if I'm listening to them in audible.
I hope I get the chance to be able to discuss in future videos.
Keep up the great work.👍
Glad to help and more on the way soon I hope
Seeing your name in my subscription feed again just made my day. Welcome back!
Yay, thank you!
Love C64/LoD. One of my top 3 favorites, along with Rondo of Blood and Bloodlines.
I’d like to play more castlevania titles but the metroidvania style is not really what I have time for these days
Glad to see an upload from you!! Hope you are doing well.
Up and down health wise but hope this channel will lift my spirits
@@n64glennplant wishing you all the best!
He's back!
Doing my best health permitting 🤞
Welcome back! Very happy to see a new video from you
Yay, thank you!
Es bueno verte de regreso con esta reseña. Legacy of Darkness es un gran juego aún con sus limitaciones.
Thanks to Google translate I can reply to you 😄
@@n64glennplant Sorry I speak English but I wanted to let you know your channels has some Spanish speakers viewers. Greetings from Mexico.
Thank you Glenn, good to see you back again, loved the video :)
I've always been a massive Castlevania fan since the Nes.
I agree, it’s actually worth playing both titles I think. As you said there’s still enough differences between them etc
Glad to see you back!
🙏🏼
Any day a new Glenn Plant vid drops is a GOOD day! Welcome back sir!
Thanks Ian that means a lot
Great to see you back. Love your content.
Hey, thanks that means a lot
To quote Sallah in Raiders of the Lost Ark: "I'm so pleased you're not dead!"
Close but just like the undertaker I keep rising 😂😂
I am joinging the Party People that are glad that you released a Video Glenn!
I haven't played Legacy of Darkness, but in my Opinion Castlevania 64 is very enjoyable and has a very nice Atmosphere.
Guess i have to throw that one into my Everdrive some Day, way to pricey.
Edit: BTW doesn't Renon look like Jean Reno :P
Haha now you mention it! I quite like renon as a character in the series
I’ll probably have this condition for life now but hopefully can get better at managing the symptoms 🤞
@@n64glennplant Not sure of your medical condition but if one of the effects is low energy maybe look at getting some B12 injections (i was not even deficient) made a huge difference for me.
Awesome seeing a new upload from the n64 master!
Hope you enjoyed it!
Ohhh there he is!! Great to see you back and hope those magazine reviews come back too,you left me hanging haha. cheers
Definitely will have more on the way soon!
The man the myth the legend! I was literally just playing this game & I'm loving it
Glad to hear it!
I beat the first one when I was 13. It was amazing back then.
You know that wasn’t an easy thing to do at age 13!
Woa! Glenn is Back!! Yay!
Will try and see what I can get done
Happy to see you back in my subscription folder!
Glad to be back sliding into your subs list out of nowhere 😂
Welcome back Glenn

Just like the undertaker I keep rising from the dead….this time literally 😂😂😂
So happy to see you again Glenn!
And I’m thankful to be well enough to do some of this again
Welcome back !
🙏🏼
I love that your reviews are just a fun and informative run through of games. Even when giving criticisms you never seem like its to be dramatic or negative. One of the few reviewers who actually seems like you enjoy games 😀
I appreciate that! I just don’t see the point in being overly dramatic about negatives as let’s be honest nothings going to change now 😂
Yasssssssss!
Thank you ☺️
Good to see you back on the Tube Glenn!!!
Appreciate that!
Let’s goooooo
Thank you for sticking around
Good to see you back in action.
I wondered about this game in particular. Thanks for more retro game history.
Thank you, always more content on the way!
Dude I was just rewatching you Diddy kong racing streams last night wishing you'd upload. Glad to see you again!
Thank you, check out twitch which is where I tend to stream more
Really happy to see a new video from you. I’ve always been intrigued by the n64 Castlevania games and hope to actually finish both of them someday
You should! Actually worth playing both of the games on n64
Love to see that you’re back and putting out new reviews. One of my favorites (& arguably the most glaring omission from your review library) is Paper Mario.
Haha it’s on my to do list still
A new Glenn Plant video, Christmas came early this year!!
Glad to see you making new videos. No one does N64 like you!
Happy holidays! 😂

@@n64glennplant can relate, it's nice to see you active again but dont strain yourself.
Yay! He is back! Nice to see you back dude. This past few weeks I have been watching your videos loads.
Glad you like them! and thanks that means a lot
Man I wish I could randomly find n64 games from way back in the day! What a find
@@n64glennplant sadly it will never happen again. If it does maybe I'll be lucky and next time it to be a copy of Conker Bad Fur Day. 😂
Hey, Glenn. Just wanted to say welcome back. It's always nice to see your vids. You stick to your usual style, that's so cool. Love it, keep it up!
Thanks! Will do!
