A heartbreaking tale of forbidden love lays secreted within a tantalizing murder mystery spiked with a series of dazzling musical numbers, in writer-director Tyler Perry’s long-gestating passion project. Featuring songs by Spike Lee collaborator Terence Blanchard, choreography by the legendary Debbie Allen, and music by composer Aaron Zigman, A Jazzman’s Blues is a testament to Black American music, resilience, and storytelling. In 1987, a stack of letters is delivered to a state attorney general, possible evidence in the long-unsolved murder case of Bayou (Joshua Boone). Leap back to 1947 Georgia, where Bayou first meets Leanne (Solea Pfieffer). They fall in love, but Leanne’s relatives forbid the relationship, and the couple are torn apart. When they meet again years later, Bayou has become a song-and-dance sensation and Leanne has married another man - and is passing as white. Their desire for each other reignited, they conspire to escape together, but dangerous secrets from their past threaten to destroy their relationship permanently. A sweeping epic shot through with romance, danger, and tragedy, A Jazzman’s Blues is a departure from the boisterous comedies that catapulted Perry to fame. Yet this was his first screenplay, written over 25 years ago, and it contains many elements that would later serve as trademarks of his unique cinema. Drawing on his passion for illuminating the Black American experience and applying a fresh, ambitious scale, this film may just mark the beginning of the next chapter in the work of one of America’s most singular storytellers.
Tyler Perry was born in New Orleans. He has worked extensively since the 1990s in film, television, and theatre as an actor, writer, producer, and show creator. His many features as director include Madea’s Family Reunion (06), Daddy’s Little Girls (07), Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? (07), Meet the Browns (08), I Can Do Bad All By Myself (09), Good Deeds (11), The Single Moms Club (14), Acrimony (18), and A Fall from Grace (20). A Jazzman’s Blues (22) is his latest film."
The film, soundtrack, choreography and the great cast was worth the 27years of waiting!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
I loved it! I loved it! The moment it went off I wanted to rewatch the entire movie! I'm also a sucker for forbidden love films, but to see it with individuals that look like me...I needed this! Congratulations Tyler Perry! Keep Going!

💯💯 I loved the movie as well and just finished rewatching it. This is the shit Tyler ever did. I loved that he did go with that ending cuz young ppl need to at least get some sense just how terrible shit was for blacks and even reverse racism
I wanted to cut the rape scene. Rape and the reenactments are so prevalent.
He should do resorts to enhance the movie more and do a special directors cut.
He should add more tension between the parents before the dad walks out and let us see what happens to the dad as a memory from the older son. Was the mother raped or did she cheat on her husband making Bayou a " half breed". The dance scenes and juke joint scenes need to be shot over. More angles of the dancing. Add one upbeat jazz song- people used to get down and swing!
After the killing of three men let us be a fly on the wall and here the sherif and the other guilty mob goers talk. He should fade Bayou's three true loves through time. Then Tyler shall gave two Oscars.
The movie was Amazing and the song Paper Airplanes is Phenomenal !!!!!! GREAT performance by Ruth B .. her and Terrance Blancard wrote a great song.

I loved this film! I wish there was 15/20 mins left though of the movie, I wanted more! There were many times I wanted to go into the movie and stop things being done but it was the characters trauma & it needed to be done!

I was so ticked off most of the movie because I thought the characters just made the most stupid choices they could make at every turn. However, once I finished the movie I realized that good movies are supposed to cause various emotions. That ending song was worth being ticked off. Paper Airplanes is a masterpiece.
