This was a great movie. Black love during that time period was always filled with trauma and this film told such a beautiful story in such a heart wrenching way.

He was lynched and she lived to a ripe old age still pretending to cry over her so called "Black love".. Disturbing film which does Blk ppl no favours whatsoever.
It was unrealistic for him to flee the south right before a mob comes for him…. just for him to go back down there?!? WHY?! Because his mom was broke and didn’t want to leave the south?! To save his passing lover who CLEARLY didn’t care about his safety?!Neither reason would be strong enough in the real world! Returning was a sure enough death wish. Then to leave the bus and think he could reason with a white mob in the 40’s?! A beautiful film, an amazing cast, but the storyline was so unrealistic.

I don't think colorism had anything to do with the movie. You must remember that Bayou's biological father was either white or biracial. I believe the father's favoritism was due to Bayou being another man's child. Also, Bayou could have been the product of infidelity which further explains the father's disdain for his stepson.
@@honeyc Colorism clearly was a factor among the brothers, as Willie Earl makes clear in his frequent characterization of his brother as a "monkey" and as a "black" so-and-so.
@@honeycI agree with the two commenter's her colorism definitely played a factor in the brother's jealous. Since he was light skinned he automatically assumed that he was entitled to being seen as the favorite, gaining opportunities to move up, and having the world revolve around him.
Great movie on all aspects, from colorism, racism, jealousy and drugs. Willie Earl thought he was better than his brother bc that what his father made him since his complexion was lighter than Bayou's. Sadly that some people of today still think this way. Willie Earl was always jealous of Bayou, he became paranoid bc of the drugs he thought his brother was take his shine. I’ll start by saying I really liked the movie. But I absolutely hated Leanne. She was entirely too self absorbed and adamant about making everything about herself. Her and bayou was putting innocent people in danger over “true love” . Should have got with citsy or a showgirl and sat down somewhere trynna have a Romeo and Juliet love story. It was hard enough being black why make it even more difficult.
Yeah Bayou should’ve just came back for his mom and Cissy and left BUCKET ass alone she was clearly trouble from the get go. But it just goes to show niggaz ain’t have restraint for😻even back then.
Leanne is difficult to like, but we can't forget that this was a girl sexually abused by her grandfather and exploited by her mother. Anyone raised like that is likely to have a vast hole at their center.

I thought the same thing that maybe his mother was raped , but then I chopped it up that maybe he just took her complexion… it threw me off when his dad said one of them is just like me and was referring to the son that looked nothing like him…
Even as someone in an interracial relationship…. I will never understand some people’s desire for white skin so badly that they’re willing to die over it. Bayou impregnated a MARRIED woman and returned to an area where he was a wanted man over his fetish that he called “love”. And she had the nerve to slap Sissy! Her and her rocking chair and paper planes can take a hike. I don’t feel bad for either of those two. The movie did a great job of exposing the pathology of these types. But overall this was definitely one of Tyler Perry’s BEST movies 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾♥️
Wasn’t a fetish it was true deep love he was willing to risk it all to be with the woman he loved… now tbh I would of went about getting her out the south a whole lot smarter but hey 😅
This was a really good movie. I have questions though. Like why he took his brother on the trip , and why didn’t he just go visit , get his woman , and then smash out. Bro wasn’t the brightest crayon in the box. But then again , he had a big heart and I understand that. But hell, everyone else knew better too. I feel like his mom and that girl should’ve been on his ass to go , the same way they were when the mob was coming…
I think he took his brother cause he loved him and wanted a better relationship. It was clearly a one sided beef between them and Bayou lived life with love. You could tell he was a little nievee and craved to be excepted by his brother. Now when it came to the mother and Cisty I agree. They could of gave him a heads up because they both knew the danger that awaited him, but people don't think clearly when it comes to matters of the heart. And this is proof on all of their behalf
Yeah tbh I thought for sure the gun Wille Earl pulled out on Bayou before the fight was gonna come in handy for him when he went back to the south. But of course to no avail and then again u gotta also think if Bayou would’ve killed the MAYOR AND SHERIFF plus took his wife and child he most definitely wasn’t making it outta Hopewell alive.
"Bucket" refers to the fact that her mother initially dropped her in Georgia -- as if "dropped in a bucket" -- and left her there with the grandfather.
Once again Tyler Perry did a great movie but he should had Bayou move on with a new family no one person is worth all that and then her whole life became a lie because she was forced by her mother to live in the white world which she stayed in. She was a coward who left her black culture to live a better life and Bayous mother should have left the south instead of struggling and Bayou would have stayed alive. Overall it was another sad love story for the injustice treatment of blk people.
The movie was good, but I had to rewatch the first 5 minutes to make the ending make sense. I wanted the ending to be more, but I kind of get it being what it was. I do wish there would have been some closure on the brother and his lowdown self. SMH
Indeed, the story line is so unrealistic. I was left perplexed and annoyed in the end. Also both brothers - the protagonist are portrayed as weak black men. I am tired of seeing weak black men on film not standing up. I know, its just a movie. But the perception is impactful.
Unless there is a second movie in the works....the ending wasn't effective at all. Also the only characters in the film that you root for are Bayou,Citsy and the german dude. Everyone else to include Leanne is a dumpster fire
Leanne (and the actress who plays her) is bi-racial. She "passes" for white in the second half of the movie because she can and because her mother wants her to marry a wealthy white man for their mutual "security."
For me (emphasis on me) this was a good movie, not great but good. It was typical Tyler Perry. The predictable outcome, the familiar storylines, stereotyped characters, the anger, pain and revenge that's always in his movies and plays. I felt like the movie had a lot of resemblance to so many other movies already done. Like the Notebook, Titanic, the Color Purple and of course Emmett Till. .The movie seemed as though it took on several different themes that were not intertwined but instead went in too many different directions. I also had difficulty understanding why it was titled A Jazzman's Blues considering the main character Bayou's did not show any passion or desire to become a jazz singer,. He wasn't even a headliner at his mother's jook-joint. Bayou was not even shown singing to the woman he supposedly loved to represent his love for both her and singing. Old school jazz singers and musicians were known as Jazzman because of their passion and pursuit of jazz as a career.. Bayou just seemed to fall into that position of jazz singer by default out of necessity to survive and not out of his passion. Ironically his brother Willie Earl was actually the one who was shown with a passion for jazz and actively pursuing a career as a jazz musician so much so that Willie Earl's pursuit of being a Jazzman was what provided Bayou with an escape when he was run out of town because Bayou's life was threaten. I guess that's also another reason why his brother Willie Earl resented Bayou. The acting, singing and dancing was great however you could tell that that baby that was delivered was a doll and the doll was way too dark to have become a lighter skinned John. In addition, if that was Leanne's mother at the nursing residence talking to the adult John, she looked younger than Leanne. The older Leanne at the ending looked older than the older Hattie Mae and was much lighter than the younger Leanne. And the beginning of the story looked more like 1967 instead of 1987. Someone said that this movie would have been better as a Broadway production or a play and I'm incline to agree Nevertheless Tyler Perry showed great effort to come out of his box of mediocrity and I'm sure he will be continue practicing a lot more. This was definitely better than most of his more recent rushed productions yet still very much typical Tyler Perry.
The ending is Leanne’s mother who raised her grandson as her own. After Bayou was killed she didn’t talk to her mother ever again that’s why the woman at the end looks way older
The movie is generally okay in terms of acting and directing, but a good movie always pays attention to details that may seem annoying to the viewer if they are neglected, for example, Lian’s harassed grandfather and not taking a reaction towards him and her exploitative mother who returned from nowhere. Who is Bayo’s real father? What does Lian’s son look blond even though his parents are black how does Bayou risk coming back when there are better and easier ways to deal with it knowing that he became rich and famous he could have sent someone to send money to his mother and smuggle Lian How does Lian eventually look completely white and Bayou's mother grows older These details when they meet reduce From the appreciation of the film, no matter how strong the acting.
I honestly didn't want to say it because if I do, it would be disrespecting this national treasure of a director, knowing that this WAS his literal first screenplay, ever, but I'm gonna say it, he is an idiot cuz why would you leave then come back just to die?
@@kaizenzx_kzx No doubt, after a certain point I was like this dude is foolish. He escaped the south 2 make a way 4 himself, it's so unlikely a person would go back.why was Hattie lookin younger than Leanne?

I think it was rather selfish of Bayou to choose to confront the mob baying for his blood with nothing when he has just been introduced to his new born. For His momma?.....if they wanted her they could have killed her a long time ago He chose to die over his son? What was Tyler Perry thinking. Her and her rocking chair and paper planes can take a hike. I don’t feel bad for either of those two. The movie did a great job of exposing the pathology of these types. But overall this was definitely one of Tyler Perry’s BEST
movies 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾♥️
I agree. Lorraine was very problematic!
His fetish? That was genuine love that man had for her
She was black. She was “white passing” but not white. Their relationship wasn’t interracial.
Wasn’t a fetish it was true deep love he was willing to risk it all to be with the woman he loved… now tbh I would of went about getting her out the south a whole lot smarter but hey 😅
@@briz9683 THANK YOU😂😂
What is the literary approach to this movie?
@@kiecutielove2923 they knew the danger. Remember it was a secret. Willie was the one that got his brother killed.
@@gratefulblessed4447 you're right! And none of them thought to protect him, instead they only thought of their self desires.
Just watched this movie in Netflix. Nice movie
Did they cut the part where hattie mae comes & gives johnathan the letters?
Right, that's why I had to watch this recap but that part is at the beginning of the movie.
It’s in the beginning… I had to rewatch cuz I was doing something and completely missed it
This movie had me finna fkn cry
Crying boohoo tears!!!! 😭😭😭😭
What bothers me alot, why didn’t they bring guns with them, they knew it would be hostile environment.. good movie tho !
No guns on the set because ... well, you know.
A Jazzman's Blues is a good movie.
What does bucket as a nickname refer to
"Bucket" refers to the fact that her mother initially dropped her in Georgia -- as if "dropped in a bucket" -- and left her there with the grandfather.
Right!
willie is the fav bc he has lighter skin it isn't explicitly said but that's the case in many
black families
Why does Leanne look older than bayou's mother
That's what depression do to you. She probably became an alcoholic, drinking ages a person as well.
I love Tyler’s movies and Plays
Johnathan was very light
The movie was good, but I had to rewatch the first 5 minutes to make the ending make sense. I wanted the ending to be more, but I kind of get it being what it was. I do wish there would have been some closure on the brother and his lowdown self. SMH
Tyler Perry definitely took some things from Forrest Gump
Indeed, the story line is so unrealistic. I was left perplexed and annoyed in the end. Also both brothers - the protagonist are portrayed as weak black men. I am tired of seeing weak black men on film not standing up. I know, its just a movie. But the perception is impactful.
Tyler Perry’s movies always have couples who have a fairer wife and a darker skinned husband… it’s the same ratio all the time…
He actually usually does the opposite lol
Great Job 🎉😊
Why those he say “bayou” like that oh my god
The ending honestly pissed me off. The movie was great but the ending felt rushed
Unless there is a second movie in the works....the ending wasn't effective at all. Also the only characters in the film that you root for are Bayou,Citsy and the german dude. Everyone else to include Leanne is a dumpster fire
Jewish
Whats Leanne race in this movie , is she a mix race or is she white race ? am just curious
Leanne (and the actress who plays her) is bi-racial. She "passes" for white in the second half of the movie because she can and because her mother wants her to marry a wealthy white man for their mutual "security."
For those that came looking for this answer… his brother did die.
How so
I was hoping he was dead when Bayou went to look for him.
How did the brother die? Did he kill himself ?
I liked mudbound more.
This movie was so damn confusing
No one knows what happened to willie earl
He probably OD
The cinematography was amazing in the movie as well as the wardrobe but this storyline was horrible. Tyler Perry needs his writers room back ASAP.
Leann is mixed. Mainly with white but, even fully black people can make all different skin & hair types including blonde.
I didn't feel bad 4 Bayou at all
Why
I honestly didn't want to say it because if I do, it would be disrespecting this national treasure of a director, knowing that this WAS his literal first screenplay, ever, but I'm gonna say it, he is an idiot cuz why would you leave then come back just to die?
@@kaizenzx_kzx No doubt, after a certain point I was like this dude is foolish. He escaped the south 2 make a way 4 himself, it's so unlikely a person would go back.why was Hattie lookin younger than Leanne?
@@dominiquejones3805 depression and guilt
Very goood movie, but i wonder how a southern guy from the 40's marry a biracial, a mix blood woman in the name of Leanne? was such marriage authorised during segragation?
He didn't know she was biracial. She was white passing.
He didn’t know she was biracial
She was passing.
I think it was rather selfish of Bayou to choose to confront the mob baying for his blood with nothing when he has just been introduced to his new born.
For His momma?.....if they wanted her they could have killed her a long time ago
He chose to die over his son?
What was Tyler Perry thinking.
I wish Leanne used the son as a bait to hold him down and make see sense in staying alive...some sort of emotional blackmail.
☹☹🙁
Man this movie was bogus they made every wrong decision they could make nd this shit skip thro the times way to fast
I had to change the speed for the video play -- I just couldn't listen fast enough to get it all.😂
Disappointing ending and the story was all over 😢
This movie script felt unfinished.
She doesn’t look white.
My question is why is she that white
