You're one of the few people I've seen that's picked up on this. Like how else was he supposed to interact with women when she was all he knew for so long?
He sees all women in a negative light because of how much of a meanie his mother was towards him what sad and sorry piece of meat for a mother and Justice for doughboy
😭 damn slk not you move your hands in the air during the gunshots scene Ricky and Doughboy's mom is the worst hood mama ever ... She was playing favoritism with Ricky... Doughboy had potential but needed the right guidance ... unfortunately, she lost two sons
unfortunately that is wayyy too common. moms hating one of their kids because of the man they decided to have them with 😢 seen it countless times growing up
“He read but he’s stupid bro I don’t get it” Doughboy is a perfect example of a product of your environment . Most the things he knows probably comes from the joint. But even though he has a bit of knowledge bout the world and how things work, he can’t see no farther than the end of the block. He doesn’t believe he’s meant for any better than what the neighborhood has to offer. Live and die there without ever questioning the reality of it all. A mild version of O Dawg.
Check out the movies Straight Outta Compton(2015), Fresh(1994), American Me(1992), New Jack City(1991), Paid In Full(2002), Above The Rim(1994), Get Rich Or Die Tryin(2005), Training Day(2001), 8 Mile(2002), Set It Off(1996), and House Party(1990).
58:47 She respects him as a father, she just doesn’t think he (or the son) respect her as a mother. The whole reason she sent him to live with Furious was because she didn’t think she was able to raise him to be the best man he could be, so she was already insecure in her abilities as a mom. Her child not wanting to live with her, not wanting to spend as much time with her and being way closer with his father, the father telling her she should stop doing/buying things for her son and dismissing her input about his life, only reinforces her own insecurities about being a bad mother. It’s understandable why she’s having a hard time with this.
At least she did the best thing by bringing Trey to his father bc of his age & him being out of control. I did the exact same thing to my son when he was about 8 or 9 years old. And now he is 22 years old, he is still communicating with me bc I always let him know his home is my home & I'm always here for him whenever he needs me. I don't make him feel any less bc I know he is a man & I love him & I always miss him. The best thing about this movie is the father is still around while other men don't. This is too important for the next generation. U made an excellent point!❤
I always felt Angela’s character and performance are severely underrated in this movie. She clearly was just as young as Furious (14) when they had their son, so it makes perfect sense why she feels insecure and inadequate in certain areas.
Among the best things I love about Boyz n The Hood is Doughboy for his character and story development and Ice Cube’s performance in the role. Cube at the time was among the emerging hip-hopers in the 90s with his debut solo album AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted after leaving NWA. The guy may not have had attended drama class in school, never did a film, never did a TV show or a stage show but it was the encouragement from John Singleton due to their friendship that convinced Cube to get the part of Doughboy. John Singleton met Ice Cube when he was a member of backstage crew at the Arsenio Hall Show and even though Cube turned down the offer a couple times, I’m beyond glad he accepted the offer. For an inexperienced actor in a cinematic debut, Ice Cube did an awesome job playing Doughboy. He played the role as if he (Cube himself) never had a dad, is the subject of ridicule and verbal abuse by his mum who favours a brother of his and ends up as as a Rollin 60s Crip. He did it so damn convincingly that he should’ve got an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe - all three for “Best Supporting Actor” and MTV Movie Award for “Best Breakthrough Performance”. This was long before Cube did the Friday films (film series he also wrote/produced), Are We There Yet?, xXx 2 and 3, Fist Fight, Ride Along, 21/22 Jump Street, Ghost of Mars, the Barbershop films, Rampart, Tresspass etc If the Marc Webb-directed and Andrew Garfield-starred Amazing Spider-Man films were to conclude with a 3rd film (a 4 hour 3rd film to end the story) and if Ice Cube appeared in it - he would’ve been J Jonah Jameson (Daily Bugle newspaper boss). Imagine Andrew Garfield and Ice Cube in the same room! Wasted/missed opportunity in my opinion.
This movie got the most amazing cast because we got Ice cube, Cuba Gooding Jr, Morris Chestnut, Larry Fishburne, Nia Long, and Regina King. Also Angela Bassett and Tyra Ferrell
The dude wit da pacifier in his mouth did that bc he had a cigarette smokin problem and that was a way he could stop unfortunately he passed away from a shooting accident
Man I was 14 back in 1991 when this movie came out. It was a very shocking and brutal reality that spoke to my generation about all of the inner city problems at that time regarding teenage pregnancy, drugs, alcohol, poverty, police brutality, racism, and gang violence. The inner city areas of huge urban sprawls like LA and Chicago saw this shit on a daily basis especially after the crack cocaine trade moved west from Miami to Los Angeles. Every night when you turned on the evening news there were always reports of drive by shootings or a gang murder. Gunfire could be heard on a nightly basis nearly every 24 hours and you would always hear the sound of helicopters. The inner city communities between the 1980's and 1990's were literal war zones and a person was lucky to make it out alive if they didn't get caught up in the shit.
If you haven't already, you should react to Higher Learning. Some of the same faces from Boyz in the Hood is also in that movie. Its another John Singleton movie as well.
If you're born after 95 and haven't seen certain movies, your black card isn't revoked. You get a pass but you gotta get around to seeing said movies. (New Jack City, Above the Rim, Higher Learning, Friday, Menace to Society, Juice, Don't be a Menace etc...)
50:16 to 50:32 is spot on! You’re the first person that I’ve watched and reacted to this movie who said my exact thoughts after all of these years. It still amazes me that even today, people that has so much to lose, still risks it all in the name of being around their toxic friends, relatives or even a significant other that they have no business being around or with. Truly sad. Great reaction! ❤
She DIDN’T say he didn’t have a say-so in his child’s life. THATS LITERALLY “NOT” WHAT SHE SAID. I don’t get why you’re bothered about the dinner. They ended the meal amicably. They just both love their son, and were expressing how it is from each of their points of view. *THEY COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE MATURE, AND POSITIVE EXAMPLES FOR THEIR SON!!!!!! The world would be a better place if more parents could talk it out like them!!* You’re making a conflict when there is none.
SLK hell back in the days people got killed over bags of chips and people step on shoes and taken people shoes really crazy sad times people dieing over nothing
The best hood classic for the summer! I remember being in the live when you was watching this 🔥🔥🔥 I love the first half of this of movie when they kids then grew up as adults. Why is Trinity always catching a stray? 2:55 😂😂😂😂 The way SL was gushing on Angela Bassett. 6:30 😂😂😂 I loved Lawrence Fishburne in this role made me appreciate him as a black dad. Justice for my nigga Ricky.
53:55 He's acting out of frustration over the powerlessness he felt when the cop put a gun to his neck. He wishes he had the ability to take the cop on in that situation.
I grew up around that time 17:05 and every new years and 1 a week they fire guns all around our neighborhood so kids when they went to play in the hood talked about the different sounds of the guns all the time.
This movie truly breaks my heart! Yes bc of Ricky but more so for Doughboy! He deserved better than a mother who hated him & a brother who resented him.
Boyz N The Hood is the quintessential hood classic. Rewatching this as an adult i realize that Ricky wasn’t street smart due to him being coddled by his mother. He laughed at Trey when Trey told him that he was afraid to have sex, he was scared when Furious took them to Compton & he didn’t take Ferris & his crew serious when they coming for him. Brenda’s favoritism towards Ricky did more damage to Doughboy than the hood ever did & Brenda lost both of her sons as a result of her favoritism. Here are some fun Facts: Will Smith was offered the role of Trey but declined due to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
I wasn't allowed to see it in the theater but I saw it as soon as it was out in VHS. I've seen it about a million times since inception. Ricky dying still gets me every time. 😢 #genx
This movie is in my top five I first watched it when I was 8 years old it left a lasting impression in my mind. The first time I heard the word gentrification was in this film that scene never left me to see it happening in real life is crazy. Massive thanks to John Singleton for this masterpiece riep.❤
Crazy thing is though doughboy was street he mainly just chilled with his friends and dealt with drama when it came. He wasn’t actively out there looking for or starting problems and I think people misunderstand that just because he was street he wasn’t the problem either. He was defending himself and his people.
Couple Fun Facts, first in watching this with John Singletons Commentary, he said the basis of this movie is the difference between having a father in your life vs having no father figure, notice when Treys Dad is speaking, Ricky is desperate for that father figure and is paying attention to every word he says, 2nd fun fact, Ice Cubes last outfit is the same one he wears in the opening of Friday
30:51 ha now this part of the movie is my favorite part. This exactly how me & my mom be joking around. To anyone else it’s sounds so rude but we be playing

The score of the movie plus the acting is why this will always be my favorite over menace to society
My favorite part is the conversation between young Trey and Furious when they went fishing.

That’s fire
There's 2 Reginas, Hall and King. 🤣
The guys that bumped into Ricky on Crenshaw were Bloods. Ice Cube and his boys were Crips.
How he don’t know that? Lol
Yep. It was based on the rivalry between the rollin 60's crips and Crenshaw Mafia bloods.
