Lots of people understand the problem with 4k. Linus is correct and asmon is right for backing him up. Bitrate and resolution at 4K = huge files and requires monetization on youtube's side.
@@Thickcurves I completely agree that it's in TH-cam's interest to monetize 4K I just disagree with who should be paying. If a TH-camr wants to upload 4K videos they should have to pay for it, not the people that are not getting paid for the revenue that it creates.

I'd say the jump that makes the biggest difference (on my phone) is 360 to 480. Such a small number jump but it goes from not being able to read any text and very blurry video to being able to see letters clearly and the ability to understand what's going on in the video
720 is more important imo. If you watch gaming content it's hard to see stuff like league of legends cool downs or hp values. I never use 1080 or higher on mobile. 1440 on pc

Well joke on everyone, today they announced the premium price going up( I’m not sure if it’s global or some regions) and in Canada it’s a 5$ increase to give you an idea. So here’s the 4K bill lol
I live in Southeast Asia on an individual Premium plan, prices are the same so far and I've honestly noticed none of what people've been complaining about in recent months. I guess one of the benefits of living in a less than stellar (economically speaking) country is that big corporations like Alphabet and Steam know we'd just not bother if costs exceed a certain threshold lmao.
I will always use Ad Block at least until the internet figures out how to make ads safe if you accidentally click on them and make them less intrusive (no flashing, no animation, just text with some small picture maybe and something clearly showing it is an ad, not a link to more content). That will probably never happen, so I will always use Ad Block if I can. I'd rather be as safe as I can as some sites intentionally make it easy for you to "miss-click" onto an ad.
Google ads aren't unsafe generally. But they're definitely annoying. I just pay for premium I've been using $5/mo student account for years, even though I graduated lol. Student email is still active for some reason

@@slamshift6927I’m late to the party but I agree with ads being unbearable on TH-cam. I’ve been on TH-cam since 2011/12, this account is 2013. It was so much simpler back in those TH-cam days, only 1 ad that you could always skip. It’s not like that anymore. I’ve had a 12hr long ad before (skippable), like why does an ad need to be that long?? Double ads with no skip is also idiotic, i would rather have ad block and stop the income flowing in than sit through all that bs. Edit: I don’t use twitch but ads are worse on there I’m pretty sure.
This whole adblock thing only started because print media started to go over the top with their online ads and popups, if we are real youtube ads were not that bad and it only started after there were adblocks. Today it is extreme vs extreme.
You clearly weren't around during the early days of the internet, when websites would force-open hordes of links and popups, some of which would play annoying sounds. Ad blockers were an absolute must. They still are. Rich people pretending to be starving isn't anything new either.
@@asteria9963 On top of that, by the same logic, switching channels during commercials or going for a leak would be piracy as well. Either every single person is a pirate, or the logic doesn't hold.
Well they always start the ads small and then make them worse. Most of us weren't alive for this, but in the beginning, the selling point of cable TV was no ads. Then they started small, and over time it got worse and worse. I think TH-cam ads would get worse no matter what users did. Streaming services are on that journey now too. I started getting Prime Video ads a couple of weeks ago. At first it was once per show, now it's twice, and they're trending ever slightly longer every month.
The whole botting issue is actually so bad that I'm no longer even going to the YT comments section, it used to be a place were you'd see a take on the content you just watched and someone would either add how they agree with you or disagree and you could have a discussion (not always civil but that's besides the point) nowadays everyone just leaves a comment and never comes back because you know that pressing the "see replies" button will most likely expose you to advertisement bot content whether that's porn or a scam and it's sad cause it takes away from the interactions you could have with other people who have watched the same content with you...

The advancements in internet connection has something to do with it as well. I still remember the time when I had to wait 30 minutes to an hour for a 3 and a half minute video to complete buffering at 240p, I think. YT didn't have the figures before. Now, the entire family of 9 can watch from their individual phones and the family TV in 4K at the same time without worrying about buffering.

How to fix youtube. 1. Make premium actually premium. Instead of BS removing normal stuff to make it "premium" 2. Make 4k upload only for youtube partners after a certain view count or sub count. 3. I do tend to keep multiple YT tabs open, and I'm often not the only one in my household watching a YT vid. Multiple connections to the same IP could very well be a factor for YT deciding to do this. edit: I should mention that I had been watching 1080p before that change without issues as well. From 1 day to the next youtube just started putting me to 480p on every vid even after previously putting it to 1080p. This happened at the start of the vid, not after 2-5 min.

I just upgraded my monitor from 1080p to 1440p ISP and the difference is nothing crazy but things are def much crisper, with colors being more saturated and popping out more. I don't personally care for 4k in certain situations. In fact watching certain shows/movies with that much clarity sometimes ruins the immersion when you can see every pore on a persons face, imperfection and see how cheap the set/cgi looks. Some things are def enhanced like live streams or shows with a host. More modern movies are def adjusting to the higher resolution.
I recently upgraded from 1980x1080 to 3840x2160 but I did that to play games and watch movies. I am using a smart TV QLED HDR 4k and fast PC to watch and play everything on 4k. The 4k video in youtube in my current experience is that is nothing like a video on my PC or a game that I am running. I still watch videos here on 1080p or 720p so what do we care. They should just charge people who want to upload in 4k, not the viewers. Most of TH-camrs make good money now days, and we support them. Is not this enough?
Adblock is morally neutral extension. One of the reasons why TH-cam was popular in the beginning was due to TH-cam not having ads unlike TV. On TV content was interrupted every few minutes with rather aggresive ads. TH-cam? No ads. Watch as you please. When ads started appearing around (or at the bottom of) videos? That was fine. We could still consume content without interruptions! But now? Watch 2 ads just to get to video? Multiple intrusive ads during the video? No thank you. If any content creator has an issue with us using Adblocker, they can complain to TH-cam for using such aggresive ads. For as long as ads are interrupting the content, I'll be using Adblocker. And if I can no longer use it? I'll find another way. I'm ok with ads... but they must not interrupt the videos.
Just because ads are the way youtubers get paid, doesn't mean watching an ad is a form of payment. It's not. When you watch the ads, you "pay" for the content in a metaphorical manner, but you're not actually paying for anything in a literal way. Unless you enter a legal agreement stipulating that you watch ads in exchange for the content, it's not actual piracy.
I don't even care about the 4k thing, just kinda afraid that TH-cam will be TH-cam and take it a step too far in a few years, until you have to pay to watch certain videos or something, the slippery slope
@@Thanatos2k yeah but for the most part they aren't the same thing, movies are independently made by TH-cam OR outsourced from film companies, I was talking more about videos made by people TH-camrs, like a system where you can only watch x videos per day before you have to pay a subscription. Movies are a product, videos like these are not, really, TH-cam's product/property
@@Thanatos2k mate you aren't listening; movies are created or bought by TH-cam - they have directly invested into them, and sell them as such. Random videos on the platform are not OWNED by TH-cam, they run ads to make money off them but don't own them or restrict access to them. They host and display the videos. The site itself, its reputation and popularity, as well as it's ads are the product: they "sell" this product to video creators in return for and revenue off of the videos. TH-cam for the most part does not actually sell much to consumers, they "sell" to creators to use ads on their videos. In the case of movies they actually directly buy or authorise sale of the movie, this is not true for videos from asmongold or Linus. These are fundamentally different. Either way, it's just semantics and doesn't mean much
TH-cam could also easily disable 4k if the user is not using a 4k screen. That change alone would save them a lot of money and nobody that actually does have a 4k screen now has the 4k option locked behind a paywall.
Sponsored ads are why I use adblock. TH-camrs are telling me I should watch 30 seconds to a minute of TH-cam ads immediately followed by a sponsor ad of the same time duration? At the start and end of the video? Forget that.
The necessity for 4k is mainly because the average size of the home theater TV is getting larger and people are sitting closer to them. As the screen size goes up if the pixel count stays the same the pixels get larger. 4k looks good on 65-75 inch tvs, but as TVs get bigger and lighter and eventually people are using thin wallpaper-style 120" tvs and sitting so close to them it looks like they're in IMAX, 8k will be noticeably different. If you've ever watched any content that's below 1080p on a VR headset then you know how resolution depends on viewing distance. 720 might look okay 2 feet from your eyes, but 2-3 inches away (using lenses to focus it of course) it starts to become difficult to tell what the heck you're looking at. I feel like VR is going to drive higher resolution as well.

That doesn't change the fact that as TV technology gets better, older tech will come down in price and larger sets will get cheaper and since the average TV buyer doesn't know what to buy other than screen size, that becomes the most important thing to them. 80+ inch TVs are already a thing you can get without them being made to order. There are going to be lots of people that buy a $500 95" TV in 5 years and put it in a space that is suitable for a 50" TV. Ten years ago I knew someone who put a 65" DLP TV in a tiny apartment where your knees were literally like 3 feet from the TV while you sat on the couch. Nothing has changed except the technology.
its fine to have 4k behind paywall, because it does make sense for creator. its not like all their viewer have the capability to watch a video in 4k. But what im worried about is that, youtube will make more its feature behind paywall due to this movement. However, instead if they make 4k content behind paywall at least improve on other free revenue like making more QOL in streaming like twitch Ui.
4k videos take A LOT longer to edit and upload, and this means less people will watch them. Creators don't receive anything extra from this. More than likely, people will upload less in 4k because less people watch them now.
TH-cam premium subscriber here: I feel like i get good value for what I pay. I get no adds, i can play videos with the screen off, youtube music fully unlocked. The content creators I watch get paid more for my view than non premium viewers.
Yup, it is good, been paying since they introduced youtube red or whatever it was called. Also I instantly cancelled my spotify subscription, since YT is just so much more worth the money. I have 2k monitor, so I almost never use 4k resolution - only for some trailers etc. which I want to see in high bitrate and only watch YT on phone if it is the absolute only option, even though I have unlimited data plan. Also doesn't Netflix charge extra for 4k stream? So yeah, it is completely reasonable to put that behind the paywall.
If costs are going up because hard drives are no longer getting cheaper as quickly as they used to, then they just have to do whatever they have to do to remain profitable. I just think it's dumb to say nobody needs 4k, TH-cam videos look significantly better on average in 4k than 1080 if you have the hardware for it. It seems like I overestimated the number of people who actually have the hardware though. Personally I don't think the change is horrible either, but I already have premium. My main reason for having it is that I watch TH-cam on my smart TV literally daily, it's probably my main source of entertainment. TV's are probably the fastest growing need for 4k hardware, because it's so important on a larger screen and PC gamers will probably wait for high refresh rate monitor prices to drop. So if you're trying to buy TH-cam premium to eliminate ads on your smart TV, there's a good chance it's new enough to take advantage of 4k video provided by the same plan.
4k quality upgrade from 1k video can be seen by most people if it's a movie and screen is at correct distance ( close enough ) according to most TV reviewers and setup guides.
I've found that 1440p on a big monitor is all the pixel count I need. It looks great, I can actually run it, and it's still an easily noticeable step up from 1080p. 4k is useful for giant monitors and huge TVs, not so much for screens 30 inches and below, and definitely not on 7 inch mobile screens.
Yeah I figured out years ago resolution is like 1/5th of the story I chose a 2k over a 4k monitor at the time because of refresh rate being much more important it was a choice of 30hz refresh vs 165hz refresh and was a much better quality than the 4k.
@@shimaphys exactly haha though once it hits 240hz it's Essentially unnoticeable anymore beyond that. It seems like a hard cap, and then anything beyond 165 is a softcap where returns diminish at a exponential rate on the way to 240hz

Adblock is not piracy because what the ads are running client-side, and once youtube has served the webpage you are free to do as you wish with that html/javascript.If it was piracy you would be getting cease and desist letters sent home to you like when you torrent sometimes. Anyone in the know has seen this coming since 2008. I'm actually surprised they didn't start charging for HD video subscriptions. I thought for a while it was going to cap at 720p
What if TH-cam charged the creator to upload 4K+. They could charge for how much each specific video would cost to store (which would probably be a few dollars a video at the most). There is no reason my grandma needs to upload a video to TH-cam in 8k when it’s only gonna get 5 views.
I use a 48" 4k tv for my monitor, but set my youtube full screen for 1080 60. There are some videos worth watching in 4k, but most aren't that important to watch above the 1080p. I also use a youtube adblocker.
Agreed. There are many things that don't really warrant it. When I bought a new TV I contemplated paying the money for 4K, but realized the difference wasn't significant enough to impact my experience for the cost difference at the time. Like shit, I wear glasses during the day and take em off when I get home so everything is gonna be a bit fuzzy anyway 😂
All I really care about is if the video has a 60fps option which usually starts at 720p and up. If it doesn't it can play at 480p, I wouldn't care much and I'm on a 1440p monitor/1080p TV. Very useful when watching videos about a game 60fps video no matter the quality is king over the resolution. I feel the same about 4k gaming. It's just harder on your hardware and most of its extra processing gets waisted because you won't notice most of it anyway. But I do agree 4k and up should be a paid for only option you already pay a premium for a 4k monitor anyway so be prepared to continue paying because it's not cheap to keep up those bitrates.

you can get a plug-in that brings back the Dislike Button. it give you the option to have the old colors for the buttons or give them a sort of neon coloring to it, looks pretty great tbh
The plugin is really inaccurate tho. IIRC it only shows dislikes from other people with the plugin or something. Asmon has said the plugins number is always way different than what he can see on the backend.
@@mikonson4091 So I've never actually looked into this, but from what I've heard it varies a lot creator to creator. Probably based on how much of their audience is using it. I mean, if a video has a huge number of dislikes in the addon, then it probably has a lot in truth. I doubt it will say there are more dislikes than there actually are, unless it's trying to scale it's users views to dislikes up to the total views on the video, or something similar. People who frequently dislike things are probably the ones who care enough to go install it.
@@gavinwhite9521 its inaccurate since not all people use the addon but it is 100% sure the dislikes is at least what is shown in the addon. Basically the dislikes are bigger than what is shown to you. Does it make it useless? Lets say in a tutorial video it has thousands dislike but in actuality it has ten thousands dislikes. Its still useful to skip that video especially if the likes is lower than the dislikes being shown.
My first pc was so long ago that it's monitor was a Hercules monochrome. The advancements in monitor resolution and graphics have been amazing over the years, but for me personally everything since 1080p has been kind of diminishing returns for the costs involved. Personally high refresh rate 1080p is all I need to enjoy gaming these days as well as video.
HDR, High Refresh Rate, High Resolution. Each individually will be an improvement but if you get a monitor that has them all, i.e HDR, 120Hz, 4K Monitor the difference is staggering.
The thing is, I simply won't watch youtube with their advertising forced upon me. I'll find other entertainment. The adverts are just too annoying. @@furydeath No, reading books, playing video games, there are enough ways to spend my time. Even working overtime is better than having ads blaring at me.
Create the problem of monetizing only 10 minutes+ videos, sell the "solution" of charging for higher resolution Brilliant business strategy right there. Thanks, TH-cam
Dude if you can afford a 4k monitor and a computer that's running 4k games (i highly doubt people have 4k just for TH-cam videos), you can afford 4k access already. The mythical broke boi with a 4k capable setup is sadly left behind, but 99% of people won't notice. I usually just listen to videos anyway and have it on 480 without Fullscreen on my phone lol
@Koi Zo I don't think the demand for higher definition in terms of pixels is going up any time soon simply because overall image improvements from higher resolutions are plateauing; if 4k becomes the norm then it would have to be so cheap and easy to run that it would be worth more in terms of not driving customers away to just replace 4k with 8k in the plan, but we're both assuming a lot about the market landscape in our opinions here, as well as how much tech could and would develop. I'm not too worried about them doubling up on paying for resolution; they were probably only willing to take this step because so few people actually use 4k, it would be a negligible loss covered by the money saved not streaming it to people in the first place. Yeah they could lol but I doubt they would unless they were pretty sure everyone would pay for it. If they want $0.99 so bad they can just add it to the premium plan price, ya know? This isn't a smart revenue stream for them as a method, I think this solution was more of an offset. The actual value and price of image quality is subjective and heavily relies on what people will pay for it and is at odds with how much it costs for the company to provide it. Elastic demands are leveraged more easily than demand for things like food and housing. Businesses are pretty evil, but people's lives aren't threatened by not having access to their services (in this case, image resolution); their customers' wellbeing isn't being held hostage in the same way a grocery store does, so they have to actually try and keep people happy. Sorry for the ramble lol I wasn't exactly sure how to word my answer. Economics is dumb
@Koi Zo You’re forgetting the other half of the argument. There is massive diminishing returns to visual clarity through a higher resolution. There’s a point where more pixels doesn’t improve visual quality, so the extra pixels are actually wasted. 1440p is already at that cusp where many won’t even notice a difference from 1080p, and even fewer notice the visual gains of moving to 4K.
Making 4k a premium just kills any incentive with the potential extra costs it takes to make a video 4K over a lower resolution. According to 2020 statistics, 99.13% of youtube viewers are NOT a premium viewer. I am sure the number has probably changed a little but still.

How to fix youtube.
1. Make premium actually premium. Instead of BS removing normal stuff to make it "premium"
2. Make 4k upload only for youtube partners after a certain view count or sub count.
3. Make 4k uploads cost a tiny bit per upload.
This way, they can increase revenue, lower frustration from viewers, and save cost from all these "nobody" channels spamming the platform with 4k videoes that literally nobody watches.
So I agree Linus, they should charge, but you, not me :*D
I just pay for TH-cam Premium, you get TH-cam Music with the price aswell and TH-cam Music has way more music than all the other services like Spotify and on top of that i get ad free videos??? It's a steal, if you pay for Spotify id advice you to get TH-cam Premium instead trust me you wont regret it, and their mobile app works perfectly aswell. Everything that is uploaded on youtube can be played in the music app, meaning you can listen to leaked music someone uploaded, underground songs that are only on TH-cam, remixes people have made of certain songs literally everything!

Yes, I use the "auto quality for youtube" extension. Forces quality of your choice. never had isseus since.
@Hudson-smm I have the same experience, it's not due to bad internet. I have been forcing 1080p for at least a year now and have NEVER (yes, that absolute) experienced problems with buffering.
Happens to me all the time, even with the best Wi-Fi in the area.
adblock is inherently not piracy. piracy is taking and redistributing content
The issue is having 4 ads in 1 under 10 minute video. I'm not doing that no matter who the creator is.
Always fun when ppl you've been following for years totally separately, suddenly find and really appreciate each other.
Remember the color and popping image has nothing to do with resolution. The monitor overall has better panel than your old one.
4k is great but 1440p is that sweet spot of fidelity and performance. Both when it comes to videos and gaming.
That's literally already a thing
@@Thanatos2k “Movies”
TH-cam could also easily disable 4k if the user is not using a 4k screen. That change alone would save them a lot of money and nobody that actually does have a 4k screen now has the 4k option locked behind a paywall.
They don’t care if you own a 4k display.

@@B1u35ky I mean, nobody really needs a TV. I do most of my watching on a 29" ultrawide monitor because I usually watch TH-cam while gaming or paying bills or doing something productive on my other monitor. I don't watch TV unless I'm watching with someone else.

@@mikonson4091 So I've never actually looked into this, but from what I've heard it varies a lot creator to creator. Probably based on how much of their audience is using it.
Economics is dumb
and how many people can afford or even get internet that lets you watch in 4k?
@Koi Zo You’re forgetting the other half of the argument. There is massive diminishing returns to visual clarity through a higher resolution. There’s a point where more pixels doesn’t improve visual quality, so the extra pixels are actually wasted. 1440p is already at that cusp where many won’t even notice a difference from 1080p, and even fewer notice the visual gains of moving to 4K.
I love premium. Not only because of the ads but because the video keeps playing when I lock my phone while working
I say charge more no issue and pay creators more but ban in video ads..
Making 4k a premium just kills any incentive with the potential extra costs it takes to make a video 4K over a lower resolution. According to 2020 statistics, 99.13% of youtube viewers are NOT a premium viewer. I am sure the number has probably changed a little but still.
