As long as it's not possible to create a (repeating) pattern swatch which you then can apply to any vector form just like a colour swatch (as you can in Illustrator since forever) this seems to be overly tedious...
Oh I've used v1 for years and it's excellent. It's definitely worth upgrading in my opinion. some Very useful options like vector warp, and the cutting tool to name a couple. The Ui looks slightly different which I'm still getting used to. When I can I will make more tutorials with that version.
This is awesome.. Also makes me wish there was a mirror feature in affinity.. I know this is 4 years old, but man this is an awesome feature... Thanks for showing
You are very welcome and Thank you for helping me learn to do more with Affinity Designer. There are many tutorials out there and many of them I cannot understand for many reasons, but you really put it together nicely. Thank you
@@ArtistWright You know, the need to learn is when I am trying to create something, that need is the call to learn the process. Although when I can go to a very informative and enjoyable learning method (Like yours), I am open to do it. I would like to learn more about creating artwork via simplistic methods, ways to streamline the work time. Gosh, there are so many.....
Thanks for the excellent tutorial. I liked your delivery (speaking pace and tone), and good tips, I will subscribe to your channel. Keep up the good work.
I like that this method is simple. The only thing I wish I could do is view the pattern on a bigger canvas in real time as I’m creating it. I know that artboards are recommended for this but I have yet to see a tutorial that makes using artboards for patterns easy. They have all felt complicated to me when I’ve tried them. I hope to find a simpler way to view my pattern on a bigger canvas in real time. This will really help me find mistakes and see if I like the overall look of the pattern.
Hi, this is a great tutorial for repeated pattern design. However I have encountered an issue about the GAP lines between the all tiles after I lay them together in a bigger document. The lines did not seem to appear in your video. Is there something I can do to rectify this problem? Will the gap lines appear when I export for printing?
Yeah I still encounter this problem after the clipping mask is created not matter what I do. I even see the lines when exported as a PNG. It's complaint I've seen in the forums.
* * * Right on, Einstein. . . I enjoyed it very much as well... I especially liked the use of pixels to specifically and precisely locate the duplicates and then grouping them together for synchronized movement around the edges. . . simply brilliant...! (grin) * * * Until that time. . .
Hi there, I was trying to follow this but when I add them all to test it - it has a very faint white line along the sides. I've checked if there are borders and strokes but there isn't. Can you help? Thanks again!
Hi everyone! Ive seen lots of tutorials on how to create repeats using symbols or singular images at different sizes. Ive been struggling to create a repeat using Affinity with one of my scanned images, I cant find a way to get rid of the seams, I'm beginning to wonder if this is even possible? Im hoping someone out there has managed to do this and can tell me how? Any help or advice appreciated :)
Hi! Seems like you are not working in Vector as you said you have a scanned image. The seams can be annoying but there is always a solution. I make seamless textures from photos sometimes and it's better to use Affinity Photo for that. Just type this into TH-cam 'affinity photo seamless texture' and check out some of the videos.
Thanks so much for this! You're a great teacher. :) With the complex patterns, do we have to make sure the corners are specially placed? In the "tropical" pattern, for example, did you have to do anything special for the umbrella drinks to make sure that not only do they repeat VERTICALLY but also as each CORNER meets the coordinating corner. Not sure if I'm making sense. :) Thanks again!
Hello, I was doing a seamless pattern for a website and it required the pattern to be in svg so ppl could to color it whatever the color they want and also should have nothing outside the artboard. The thing is, even is hidden, what is outside the artboard is still saved in svg. I tried cutting using trimm/cut tool just to discover it won't really cut, but mask it. I tried using boolean but it is a hassle if you have 1 zillion of layers to cut and it cannot cut grouped layers. It sounds ridiculous but there is some work around, tool or export mode to make this work not so hard?
Hi and thanks for watching. Why draw anything outside of the art board? Have you seen my other pattern tutorials? Take a look at them I think it will help
@@ArtistWright Isn't like I'm drawing anything outside, but like your tutorial where you put the object in the corner, part of the object is hidden but it still is there. I was looking at affinitty forum it seems that a knife and an erase tool are also an old request, so no solution for the problem right know, but thank you for take your time to answer and for creating tutorials, they are very helpful.
Ah I get you. So if this is an issue for what you are doing. Then you will have to cut those parts. Doesn't have to be too long winded, draw out a big rectangle to cover what you need to cut. Have it on the top of the layer stack, then Select the rectangle and all the shapes and click on the subtract option in the boolean operations. Repeat this for all of the sides
@@ArtistWright I tried doing it this way. It doesn't work well if you have multiple underlayers (or I'm doing it wrong). I guess I'll add it to the list of needed implementation for Affinity Designer. Thank you anyway.
Cutting into individual shapes that are overlapping or have shapes clipped is a pain. You will have to cut each piece separately if that's the case. You will need to design with that in mind on your next piece
Again, patternmaking with Affinity Designer falls far short of what is available with Illustrator. Can Affinity use plugins from other companies to facilitate faster patternmaking?
Very interesting but I still have some problems with the rapport alignment. I still see a separation line among the rapports.. maybe you know why!! Please can you help me?
You will see this very small seperation line, i don't know why, but you will not see that if you export the image to jpeg or whatever, that line dissapears. its only apparent when editing the vector, maybe to remind you of the separate pieces they once were.
You present a very good tutorial, however, missing is a good lesson on the tool features. As an artist that did everything by hand for offset printing, this is totally new and I haven't found a source to simply understand how all the tools work. I Took a $2000. course that was very misleading and frustrating due to the information that was lacking.
Sedonartist thank you so much really appreciate it. I did think about that when I first started doing these videos, but the click sound represents an action, it helps people to know when to click and hold etc, especially for people not au fait with this software.

No worries and thanks for the comment! Another tutorial coming this week (not patterns but more isometric)
Am I the only one that things there should be an easier way to such a common need as a repeated pattern?
Actually there is another way Christian

Hi Frenzic! Sometimes you see those faint gap lines in Affinity but they don't actually exist. Try exporting it to a jpeg and check it over to be sure
