The 2020s have given us a lot of material for the boondocks, an entire season can be just from modern hip-hop
The problem with season 4, imo, was that it was more about "lets put these characters in funny situations" and not about the social commentary, which is what made boondocks great. Like the breaking bad episode and the siri episode.
Meanwhile earlier seasons had episodes like the prison episode that went over the exploitative prison system and how male sexual assault is downplayed

Sometimes it's better to quit when you're ahead, but i don't think Fandom is capable of taking that into account in the moment. There's so many shows that people beg to have a continue just hoping to get more of what they like, woth no consideration for the creative process. It is what it is. I think its the responsibility of creatore and production companies to exert better judgement when it comes to when a show should end.
So true, but I can't blame either side at the end of the day. Fans want to be entertained, and the creators and businesses who produce the entertainment want more money. At some point, something has to give, and the art inevitably suffers. All the more reason to respect and appreciate artists who know when enough is enough and are able to end their stories gracefully and on their own terms. Your channel is critically underrated. I found your channel through the first episode about season 1 and for someone who has less than 5k subs these videos are incredibly high quality. Your voice and editing is fantastic. The messages you convey by talking about this show is heart warming because my best friend Airus who’s black introduced me to this show and I loved it. A big part of our friendship and inside jokes is based off of this show and to see someone who appreciated the show as much as we did, make an entire series about how great the show was aside from season 4 made me very happy. I hope you keep making videos and pursuing these projects.

I watched it bro, it’s terrible, I don’t acknowledge it exists. The same thing that happened with SpongeBob happened to the boondocks, once the creative force behind it left, the show suffered.
Season four of the boondocks was terrible, I don’t acknowledge it. Once Aaron left, you could really tell that to show dipped in quality.
Honestly i like to think that Season 3 was the offical ending of the Boondocks and Season 4 was the epilogue of the series, a sort of what they're doing now type of season with Huey giving up being a freedom fighter
Riley being a real nigga as always

Sorry for this long comment but I just wanna say a few things
1- your retrospective videos on the Boondocks have been really enjoyable. Since it does feel like people only talked about it for the comedy and on a surface level and only now started talking about the deeper meaning. And it's clear you enjoy both aspect and have a lot of passion for the series
2- I agree with you that the Boondocks was a products of it's time and if we would've gotten a reboot or sequel it probably won't even be on the same quality as the original show. But sometimes I wish we gotten more shows just like it.
3- More animated tv series(adult or not) where it follows a black family and have social commentary about black culture( the good and bad), how society gave us a shitty hand and so on. Like I know people harp on shows and movies for being "too woke" 🤓 (which is a dissuasion for another day) which they aren't they are just poorly written. But it would been nice to have some tv shows just like the boondocks while still having an identity of its own.
4- And lastly keep on being amazing and awesome, I can't wait to see what're cooking next. 🎉

I 100% agree that we need more shows like the Boondocks that depict Black families, dealing the trials and tribulations that come with being black. The problem is that can be a very nuanced and difficult topic, and it takes writers like the early seasons of the Boondocks had to eloquently illustrate those concepts
The closest thing to the Boondocks I've seen since it ended was Donald Glover's live action series Atlanta. Shows like that and the Boondocks only seem to come a few times a generation unfortunately. But I'm sure we'll see more great black art in the near future

@@chillreview636 Yes! Please talk about Atlanta! Oh my god, what a fucking trip that show was! I binge - watched it a few months back and fuck me, mind = blown. It reminded me of when I was in my twenties up in too much bullshit. Couldn't trust people sometimes because of who I was fucking with, couldn't trust myself cuz I didn't know better yet, not a boy but not yet a man, coming into my own without a lot of guidance ... it really spoke to me and touched on the black experience in a way I hadn't seen before. I would hang with Darius any day of the week!
You ended your video on the perfect message & the perfect summation of why all art is ephemeral: it speaks to a moment in time that can’t be recaptured, no matter how many Hollywood execs want to cash in on it. Great work on this retrospective series!

Dude, fuckin amazing video. But I think something to note is how this entire season is themed around “exploitation”. The exploitation of the lower class, the exploitation of women, the exploitation of marginalized/minority groups as a whole. The plot of the Freeman family being extremely poor could’ve been done well. Like you pointed out; Ruckus succeeding while the Freeman Family is suffering made me think of your analysis of Passion of the reverend Ruckus. I think an entire season where the Freeman family slowly prevail ending with Freedom land would’ve been pretty nice.
Edit: but I’m glad we got what we got. Season 1 is my favorite season for this reason anyway. It might just be me, but there are some parts of season 4 where you can just SEE the passion leaking through but being clogged by nonsense. But I digress.

Very good points about the theme of exploitation. I didn't really focus on it in the video, but it was definitely there. And I agree that there are moments and aspects of season 4 where you can see some of the classic Boondocks genius, but there's just soooooo much trash in between those moments. Definitely had potential to be great, if the right people were writing it
I remember when season 4 was promoted all over worldstar hiphop. I was still in school at the time and we were promised 20 episodes. I was so disappointed with just 10. Like you said it wasn't all bad but it wasn't the same boondocks
I think about The Good Place, how there was such universal acclaim and praise. How they could’ve done what so many series did before and extend it for multiple seasons, but the creator said no. They knew what they had, they knew the story they wanted to tell, and rather than be blinded by fame and money, they stayed true to their vision and ended it on their terms.
I love The Boondocks. I got A Right to Be Hostile when I was 11 and it hit in a way that nothing else had up to that point. I’ve got the first three seasons on dvd. I don’t know if I want another season, because as you said, maybe it was meant for that time period. Maybe a reboot would only further dilute the message. I don’t want that risk.
Didn't know that about the good place. Only watched the fist few episodes and thought it was it was pretty good. I always love it when I creator can end their show on their terms.
Andy yeah, looking at pretty much every other reboot to come out over the last decade or so, I don't have much faith that Boondocks reboot will even come close to the impact the original had. And that's okay!! We always have the original. We should be pushing for new art to inspire us in new and amazing ways not reaching back to the past for the same inspiration.

I’m super late cause TH-cam sucks at notifying people of new uploads but just wanted to say I’ve appreciated this series retrospective a lot.
I watched The Boondocks long after it ended (in 2018 I think?) and couldn’t quite articulate why, but also felt that season 4 was just meh. Personally my favourite is season 2 and I totally agree with your ending sentiment that the show should just be allowed to end.
My favourite sitcom is Seinfeld and a large reason it has the legacy it does is because it ended without being dragged out. Maintaining a legacy is more important than constant revenue. Great reviews man 👏

Season 2 is definitely the funniest in my opinion.
And yeah, it would have been great if the show could have ended like Seinfeld. I wish more shows could go out on the creator's own terms like that, but at least we got 3 great seasons before season 4
I agree. Season 4 had some decent moments, but it’s obviously a step down in just about every way from the previous seasons, which is pretty much common knowledge at this point. Characters like Thugnificent, A Pimp Named Slickback, Ed Wuncler III, and Gin Rummy were nowhere to be found and all the main characters were shells of their former selves. The nuance wasn’t there and even a lot of Ruckus’s rants sounded half assed. It’s almost like they made this season because they were tired of people asking for it.

I was a middle class white kid and we’re probably the same age, I’m 32 now and I also didn’t know s4 backstory but felt something was wrong immediately also. I’ve gone thru the show so many times in my life and lately it really hit me the hardest to the point that I went on line looking for documentary’s and videos like these. I love ur take on the show as a whole. This show is so wonderful and as much as i wish it wasn’t over I hope they never make a remake because the 3 first seasons are special.

Appreciate you for this, fam. I've been rewatching the Boondocks in prep for a long-style video essay like this and it's always great seeing others take on it too. I feel it too and I hated the New Black so much and like you said, part of what makes it so frustrating is that it's also the end of the series.
I guess for me too, since I'm Black, queer and disabled, this show was a huge part of my upbringing and I loved it, but it was also disappointing seeing the same production team making these groundbreaking, insightful, and moving stories also make the conscious and continual refusal to grow when it comes to their depiction of things that don't affect them. The New Black is rushed, but a lot of those issues kind of creeped up in seasons 3 and 2 as well and it's sad for me that something that came out during a very rough time in my life didn't have that same growth.

And it might be depressing that the Boondocks devolved as you evolved. But that's the nature of entertainment unfortunately. Like I said in the video nothing is meant to last forever and most things can't be good forever. At least we got the amazing first 2-3 seasons
I haven't seen them since the first watch. The disappointment every week was heartbreaking.
I think it’s understated how much ammo they would have for a season 5. I always point out that in-universe, the usage of chairs is a thing. They could redo the brawl in the south that the chair was thrown at that riverfront and really strike gold. And a thousand other viral things over the last 10 years. Huey and Riley in their high school or middle school era would make for some interesting social commentary. Similar to how Atlanta used viral moments and surreal real world news stories. I think Boondocks, with good writers, would have a excellent return.

Season 4 is the best looking season animation and art style wise for me, but even in middle school I noticed the drop in writing quality. I used to sneak and watch the show as a kid, I was 9 when season 4 started, but even then I noticed this season was a lil goofier than the rest.
"I was 9 when season 4 started" just made me feel older than I ever felt on my life 😂. Crazy to hear you could tell something was off with season 4 at 9 nine years old
It's fucked up how this season has a total of 10 episodes instead of 15 or the fact that the reboot was halfway finished before being axed by Warner Media in favor for shows like Velma and My Adventures with Superman.
Man I had almost completely blocked that Velma show out of my memory until you had go and remind of that bullsh!t 😭😭😭
But yeah as much as I don't really need to see another Boondocks reboot, i was kind of interested to see what they would have done with it
One series I can think of that came back twice as was better than ever is beavis and butthead. Each season got better in fact, and they didn't miss a beat between seasons 7 and 8 or 8 and 9. But I agree, it is rare. Though perhaps easier with cartoons than with live action. But with so much of the cast of the boondocks having passed, I don't know how well it could really turn out. Gonna be hard to replace Witherspoon.

Aside from VAs passing away, I think the disaster that was season 4 was a huge reason why the Boondocks reboot was canned and why Adult Swim has been so scared of doing anything Boondocks related again
Also, creators leaving their shows would typically result in jumping the shark, but even if the creator came back for a reboot, it just won’t be the same and I think corporate meddling would kill it like how they did with season 4 without him. It’ll be like what Ren and Stimpy went thru back in the 2000s, where the show came back, only for it took like Shaq on the Celtics.

I remember I got into the boondocks 2 years ago when I was 13, and once I got on szn4, straight from episode 1, the season fell off, and it kept getting more worse and worse until I was disappointed my favorite show ever ended on a season like this

Definitely agree it was hard to watching the freeman family get shit on the whole episode. Grandpa didn’t have heart in season 4 it was all “comedy” no grounded moments to make him feel like a real parent.

I started out using an NW-700 NEEWER microphone, but I changed to an SM7B SHURE microphone about a year ago. It's the same mic you might see on a lot of podcasts.

Some early drafts were written by Mcgruder he just didn’t want to receive credit you can find the copies online that say written by Aaron and Rodney

@@chillreview636 just some and they were very early drafts it take me a while to find them but I know he left right after Carl Jones and on all the commentary Rodney Barnes has mentioned Aaron would take his scripts off and work with other writers and secret teams and the network wanted to keep Carl who was able to help him stay on schedule so I don’t think it was too long. It’s also the same reason they canceled the reboot. He cares more about the overall product then meeting 15-20 episode orders bi-yearly
In the Sony hacked emails some execs were talking about Aaron taking too long writing season 4 and his agent told them to take his name off of episodes he wrote or co-wrote. And I think in a John Witherspoon interview he said they were maybe halfway through recording what was written when they heard Aaron left. So it seems like there was alot of beefing going on and the failure of turning the Boondocks into a franchise.

I was one of the people that would cut Boondocks comic strips out of the paper. When Adult Swim announced they were making it into a show, I was beyond hyped and I was not dissatisfied in the slightest, until season 4.

Always happy to see you drop another review for us! You actually got me watching Boondocks again and I rolled through SE4 piecemeal without thinking too much about it, just watching an ep here and there based on the description and yeah, nothing amazing but I was glad they were made cuz it gave me a little more Boondocks to enjoy. Freedom to Ride or Die was great, the 1st ep was alright, but the rest I can't even speak to because they left no impression or I just didn't even bother watching them.
You def hit the nail on the head with a moment in time and place where a good piece of media fits, and how outside of this time and place it can very easily go off the rails. I mean, fuck, look at Star Trek and (god help me) Star Wars. Not even gonna touch that. But imagine a reboot of Daria. Imagine how awful that could be if they didn't land it right. I mean, I saw a Xmas card from the Daria artists with Quinn's head in a box being Daria's gift. Can you imagine how people wold loose their shit over that today? Or, look what happened to the Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, any of the Family Guy spin-offs. They all devolved into utter ridiculousness. They became parodies of themselves.
Part of what made The Boondocks truly great is they weren't afraid to poke fun at some truly absurd aspects of black culture at the time. Again, can you imagine how cancelled a motherfucker would be after talking about nigga moments? At this point I feel like it could be applied to any couple of assholes loosing their shit, but there is so much tragedy attached to that concept as it stood. I mean, I live in Oakland and I know that shit still goes down like that cuz otherwise people wouldn't be getting shot while painting their roof like one of my neighbors was a couple months ago.
You always drop some wisdom at the end of these retrospectives that is key. Yeah, you can love something but it will end or it will change, and they you have to learn to love something else or your soul will die. I'm so glad there are so many artists telling beautiful, wonderful, creative stories that I can immerse myself in when shit gets bad, or when things are going so well that I can truly enjoy them, and I love coming back to those treasures, as a new man, a different person than I was before. So much good anime, good books, good movies like that. I would highly recommend March Comes in Like a Lion if you haven't seen it already, and I would love to hear your thoughts on that one. Excellent coming of age story with multiple characters coming into themselves in ways that might make you jump out of your chair. I was in a real shitty place when I saw it, but trying to be true to myself and what I knew was right, and seeing some of those characters persevere really helped me get on with it and even come out the other side of my situation better for it.

The least funny, trashest episode of The Boondocks in my book. Watched it again a year or two back and I don't think I laughed once.
These retrospectives have been great, man. I was one of the ones who use to hold out hope for some sort of Boondocks return, something to let it end on a better note than season 4. But you're right, everything has its time. And season 4 doesn't stop us from appreciating the 3 great seasons that came before it.

They tried that just last year. I heard they had a good amount if episodes written and recorded, but Warner Bros or some big company pulled the plug at the last minute

I remember when the reboot was announced and I was excited because I could finally wash the taste of Season 4 our of my mouth.
But with John Witherspoon dying and Regina King going though problems, it was for the best that it got canceled. And it made me appreciate the magic of seasons 1-3.
On an unrelated note, did you ever watch Archer? That show just ended recently after 14 seasons and is a pretty great example of a show going way past its relevance and should have ended multiple seasons ago. I stopped watching since Season 7 and came back to watch its ending.

You explained exactly how I felt about season 4. It was mid at best and I hated the season/series finale. It was a disgrace to be consider a finale. There were some funny lines in there maybe with stinkmeaner and grandad, and there are some retcons in there that just felt off oppose to the previous three seasons. Though it's over, I still enjoy watching the first three seasons from time to time.

On that Ruckus being part of the elite I agree it was fun seeing ruckus being a nobody but wasn't the reboot with Aaron gonna have him become a politician as well?
I'm lowkey glad the reboot didn't happen. As much as I want new boondocks with Aarons McGruder returning, the new art style and other changes would've made me miss the original show. Hopefully one day Aaron can create another animated black show one day.
Yeah I heard he was basically gonna be like Trump, which has potential. That's pretty similar to what they did in the Reverend Ruckus episode, but that was only for 1 episode. Idk how I would feel about a whole season focusing on Ruckus being Trump

This is the first review I’ve seen of season 4 that’s not completely shitting on it. I agree with you. It’s not bad. It’s just not good either. Other than Pretty boy Flizzy & Freedom Ride or Die (which I’ll die on the hill of that being one of the funniest episodes of the whole show), the season stays at about a 6/10. Definitely a disappointment, but far from “completely unwatchable garbage” like most people say.
Also. Very well said at the ending. The boondocks was a product of the time. And while I do think there’s a world where it could continue (everyone comes back. Maybe get a few younger writers in the room. The find a replacement for grandad (I’ve been saying Jenifer Lewis as the long lost grandma for years. I really think she’d be dope). And they sort of turn into a more surreal Atlanta type of show), it’d be WAY too much against it. Especially if McGruder was pissed about censorship in the 2000s lol. I just enjoy it for what it was. It had its run and 3.5 good seasons is still a lot of content to watch and enjoy. That being said, it’s still funny imagining Dababy in the Boondocks universe 💀

I damn near cried how Adult Swim Fired Aaron Mcgrooder because this season was not it I like pretty boy flizzy the slavery episode and the freedom or die that was pretty dope but everything no trash and adult swim had the dumb idea to play reruns of the season 4 episodes
I think honestly the problem was.
You didnt bring on the right people.
And they didnt let it adapt to the modern world.
What makes a good revival.
Is having a certain feel, and respect for everything.
The people writing and making it, have to love the thing they are making.
Thats the most important love and care.
And little network interference.
But nowadays we got a lot of great art carrying a similar spirit, and I think thats enough.
But if they do this shit again, they gotta bring in people who really care about this.
And I think because of the lack of love, and a studio forcing this shit together we got deprived.
