      Adrian,
When I was a child, my parents only listened to classical music. I had been listening to Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky every night during family dinner.
In 1975, after hearing “All By Myself” on the radio, I heard the similarities between that song, and the piano concerto that inspired it. It was one of those 💡 moments.

Besides “All by Myself,” Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor is also the source composition for Frank Sinatra’s hits “Full Moon and Empty Arms” and “I Think of You.” In fact, there are quite a number of popular-genre tunes that are lifted from classical compositions. For example, Mat Munro’s hit, “My Love and Devotion,” is sourced from Henryk Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto No. 2 and Tony Bennett’s “Stranger in Paradise” was sourced from Aleksandr Borodin’s “Polovtsian Dances” 9from his opera, “Prince Igor’). These tunes may be unfamiliar to you, depending upon your age. I’m 77 years old.and have long complained, but only to my closest friends, about the lack of attribution to the original composers.

No! He's lucky he didn't lose writing credit altogether!! LIFE of the composer PLUS 70 years is the international copyright law. How could he have not known? He knew, but got caught! I hate that he is associated in any way with the magnificent Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto #2, which has far more pathos in it than a Celine crybaby singalong!! All Eric Carmen did was write nice lyrics for the main motif in the concerto. Just like Francis Scott Key who on September 14, 1814, pens a poem which is later set to the music of To Anacreon in Heaven which was composed by John Stafford Smith in 1776, and in 1931 becomes America's national anthem. I'm so tired of real composers not getting the credit they deserve, right down to our national anthem. Yes, Celine, you are by yourself! UGH.

Carmen didn’t know that. He has paid 12% of the money that song earns to Rachmaninov’s estate, ever since they contacted him.
How can you fault him for not knowing international copyright laws? The internet didn’t exist, and he checked the US laws on public domain before he released the song.

@@beachgirl4583 "How can you fault him for not knowing international copyright laws?" You are still missing the larger point. Why use another's original work for yours, ever? Even if it is "public domain" it is still not original to you -- and not yours! No sense of civility or respect in this. Eric Carmen had every right and ability to go write a hit song, but he should have been shrewd enough to write his own motif and not rely on one that may or may not be in the public domain wherever or whenever! Personal example: in my second symphony I truly adore the motive I came up with, but it seemed so easy to me, so familiar that I began to panic for fear of subconsciously having reiterated something I may have heard long ago. I went to great pains to determine if it was authentic and original via various sources to determine the verdict. After a reasonable cost and a six month scrubbing of available libraries and compendiums I finally was put at ease that it was in fact mine after all. However, being very influenced by composers John Barry and S. Rachmaninov specifically, it was clear to me why my theme was so familiar in that I had adopted their ways of structuring a motive. Fortunately for me, my motive was mine, but I would never expunge Barry's or Rachmaninov's impression upon my inner ear. Plus I KNOW I am not infringing! It is always the composer's responsibility to check on ALL possible copyright possibilities. PD tunes are simply a crutch in any case. Good for Carmen and his 12% that he pays the Rachmaninov estate. But c'mon! That theme or melody is used by Rachmaninov as exposition, and developed, interpolated and inverted transitionally and terminatively all through 100% of the entire forty minute long concerto!! Just because many people cannot hear and recognize, understand or discern the musical structure in this way does not make this point moot! Such BS that people cannot see the crime in this!! Write your own!

      @@SouloftheTroll ,
Eric Carmen acknowledged the source of inspiration (Rachmaninov) for those two songs from the beginning.
Several other singers (Frank Sinatra was one) stole parts of Rachmaninov’s work, and didn’t acknowledge it.
I, too, research the music that seems to come from me, to make sure I’m not hearing those notes and chord progressions from something I heard decades ago. The resources available to us were not available to Carmen.
      Carmen did create the lyrics.
Here’s a rip-off that seems to have fallen through the cracks of copyright law:
A band called Gamma wrote a song called “Voyager”. There was an image of a shark on the album cover.
A few years later, a band called “Great White” released several albums with similar shark images. One of the songs they released is called “House of Broken Love”. There are some nearly identical chord progressions, clearly inspired by/stolen from Gamma’s “Voyager”.
Finding and noting musical rip-offs is a hobby of mine.
I’m not defending Eric Carmen, but he’s not in the same category as others who have not acknowledged the source material, like Frank Sinatra did with Rachmaninov.
I’ll look for that link where a lot of singers stole from Rachmaninov.
ETA the link that shows Sinatra’s rip -offs:

Covered by many artists such as Sophie Ellix Bector and Kim Wilde….even by Celine Dion herself in Las Vegas…Injustices also occur in music….

Most (all?) music ultimately comes from someone else. Themes are themes, and have been around in one form or another for millennia. We only know about the "Rachmani-ripoff" because of the state of music publishing 100 years ago.

Yes!! Thank you !! So many artists use music from the past and anyway they played Eric’s song OVERTOP of this and it DID NOT MATCH UP EXACT!!

I too became interested in Rachmaninoff because of Eric Carmen whose family also were Russian.

Lol even if he did rip it off it’s not a big deal. How are we supposed create new music if we can’t use the great music that came before us?

  • @psoldoy9847

I mean yes it is greatly inspired by rachmanninoff but it is still a great song because he covered it by his own way. It is like Liszt with covering and reworking many works of Bach that were for organ into piano.

If you are wondering if this is just a one off 'mistake' by Eric Carmen listen to the third movement of Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony.. Carmen was a serial plagiarist, a ripper off of entire melodies and their chordal accompaniment.....Here....th-cam.com/video/59cLZSkkjPA/w-d-xo.html

This was public domain in the U.S. and when he found out that it wasn't in the other parts of the world, he paid a percentage of the royalties to the composer's estate. Probably more money than they ever made off that music.

@@myblessedfriends He stole the music. Put his name on it as the composer. TWICE. Then he went into all the excuses and wiggling out of it after he was called on it. If he had been honest the song credits on the album, from the very start would have read Lyrics, Carmen. Melody, Rachmaninioff and he would have paid the appropriate royalties beforehand. But he tried to pull a fast one.

Absolute rip off! Did he pay Rachmaninoff family and foundation MILLIONS of dollars since benefiting from this theft? I don't think so. Did he ask for permission to use this piece of music? I don't think so. Absolute talantless thief! That is how he'll be remembered forever

When I first heard this song I immediately recognized it as Rachmaninoff. The lyrics added are so common, uninspired that the song he "created" is insulting and offensive. Love Rachmaninoff, hate what he did to it. I'll credit this. If you steal you should steal from the best.
