  • This is the Svea 123 stove, I have completely stripped it down and given it an overhaul, this is NOT the Svea 123R, as the key is bigger, but on the 123 it is a lot smaller, also you may want to note that they used the 123 tank for the 123R so don' be miss guided by what it says on the tank, most important, DON'T LOOSE THE KEY , if you need any help in how to dismantle or replace anything just get in touch with me, I like to help people where and when I can.

    Very nice tutorial. I am in the process of rebuilding an original 123, so this is very helpful. I especially appreciate the hint about lining up the valve with the 1 on the stove tank. I was wondering how to deal with that alignment. Thank you and well done sir.

    Across the pond in America we usually use Naphtha or White Gas which is actually a trademark of the Coleman Company. However, I've always used either kerosene or gasoline in mine and it's worked fantastically. Great video!

      Hi there, yes that's fine but it does make a bit of a mess, so I stick to Colemans, thanks for the comment.

    Great video.! I can’t get white gas or something similar on my island. Instead I use 1/3 99% alcohol and 2/3 kerosene. The mix is cheap and burns clean and perfect.! Inside the stove also stays pretty clean. I have more work polishing up the stove so once a while. I want my stove to stay “ good looking” LOL.
    Chears.!
    Forgot to say: I extended the three tips with a small diameter copper pipe, so I can put a bigger frying pan on it. We eat lots of fish on our island. Mahi,wahoo, tuna, etc.
    The stove fries up fish very fast.!!! The little “Bygon” butane gas bottles are almost US$ 3,- here. My fuel mix is way cheaper.!!!

    thanks for the email by the way. I almost got the chance to get the stove in this video, but opted for the svea123 in the sigg tourist. it is the original 123,and aside from a dinked up burner bell, it was in pretty good shape. I'm not sure about what the difference in fuels are between us, but your right on one thing. I got some fuels here that are plumb sooty. if by petrol you sent gasoline, I can tell you now our premium unleaded Burns like a tire fire compared to what you used here in this video. again, thank your Charlie for the time to send me both the email and the vid link, really appreciate it.

      Premium unleaded gasoline is higher octane which means it has more additives (or impurities, if you like). You want lower octane. Coleman fuel/white gas was originally about 50 octane (might still be that or even lower now). Regular unleaded is a better choice than premium unleaded. Coleman fuel is still the best choice, though.

      +miagy420 Good little upgrade burner, turn the valve fully to the left and the needle will pop up to clean the jet, give it plenty of time to prime before opening the valve, and it will fire up straight away, I use unleaded petrol in the tank, burns nice, thanks for the comment

    When you say that you use "petrol" , that would be the same thing as gasoline for your car right? I don't want to wind up in the local burn unit for using the wrong fuel. I have only used white gas (Coleman fuel) in mine so far.

    • @charlietango1635
      @charlietango1635 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, Coleman fuel is fine as it does not have all the additives in it that petrol has, use methalated spirits for priming. thanks for the feedback.

    Great video my friend. I have one of these but it needs the pot stand and the leather gasket. The valve don't slant. It would make a good parts stove.

    • @charlietango1635
      @charlietango1635 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robert, your stove is a Svea 123R if the valve slants down, then it is a 123 so therefore DOES NOT have a needle jet cleaner inside, you could quite easily make a pot stand for it, just by using a metal coat hanger or some 2mm rod and bend it twice to make it into a "U" shape, turn upside down and push into the ground crossing over the other and stopping just before the flame bell spreader.

    Most folks in America that used these stoves when they were popular, made them sooty by improper priming. Myself being one of them, we would prime them with solid fuel tablets placed in the bell.

    When you had your stove at full throttle, it looked as though you were getting too many yellow tips in your flame. Could that have been cleaning residue burning off or did you find your wick was not quite right? Do you have a video where you show how to replace the graphite packing in the flame control spindle with some graphite tape? Or do you know of a video someone has posted showing the same? I have several of the 123s and 123Rs I plan to rejuvenate and will sell most of them. In my early days I used an Optimus 8R I purchased new in about 1972. I've also used the Coleman Peak 1 Multifuel 550 stove. That one works very nice as well. Thanks for all the videos you make about these stoves. They are very helpful.

      Get some Coleman fuel, only fill the tank 3/4 full, this is why your stove is sputtering fuel out of the jet, the tank is too full

I've tried to fix it myself but to no avail. do you service these stoves if so could I send it to you to have a look at.

    Hi Ray, How are you today? Nice video. Ever taken your SVEA 123 on a hike and used it out in the field? They work well don't they? On mine I burn Coleman Fuel, it's sometimes called white gas. You have some of it on your workbench I've seen it in other videos in a quart or one liter container. I've never used regular petrol or car gasoline in mine but i guess you could use that if you wanted too. On your small mini feast alcohol stove with wick that you built we use methyl alcohol, or denatured alcohol. I use this stuff called HEET, gas line antifreeze and alcohol remover, that you put in the gas tank of your car and then fill the tank up. It removes alcohol in the gasoline and helps the cars engine perform better. This methyl alcohol works VERY well in small alcohol burners like yours. Ray what's your e-mail address? I have a couple of pictures of stoves and leatherworking stuff I've made that I want to show you.

    Charlie, I'm looking for some advice really……..I've got a new Svea 123r and it works great but when I turn the valve key all the way to the right it doesn't go out, it just reduces to a little yellow flame for a bit until it decided its had enough a few mins later or I blow it out. Is this normal? If not can I fix it?

    • @charlietango1635
      @charlietango1635 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it is not normal, yes you can fix it, first unscrew and take off the flame spreader, then remove the jet, when you have turned the throttle all the way to the right, you should NOT be able to feel the pricker at the top of where you took the jet out of, now undo the nut on the throttle, take it off, now unscrew the throttle spindle, SLOWLY, the pricker block should rise up on the teeth, until you can take it out, now close the throttle all the way to the right until it has shut off the valve in the housing, now put the pricker back in the stem, open the throttle slowly, at the same time look at the pricker, and put your finger gently on the pricker until you feel it click, (twice) while you are turning the throttle to the left SLOWLY, you will feel the pricker move, now put the jet back on and the nut to the throttle, replace the flame spreader and then just warm up the stem with some meths, use Colemans fuel in the tank, sorry it is long, but if you follow my instructions all should be well.

    • @liquidvic

      Thanks, I'll give that a go. I heard there's graphite inside that can break so I'll go slow and easy. I managed to buy an old Max Sievert SVEA 123 the other day, looks to be in pretty good condition but it don't have a pricker : ( Wonderful and quite beautiful little stoves.
